HOTA Gallery on Queensland’s Gold Coast commissioned a purpose-built scissor hoist to move large and heavy artworks through its new building. The installation was designed, manufactured and installed for this gallery rather than sold as an off-the-shelf model. Its unusual combination of lifting capacity, a broad platform and 5m-high hoist walls made the project a substantial engineering and installation exercise.

The project feature in Australian National Construction Review reports the key dimensions and describes the lockdown conditions under which the work was completed. Those details explain what the hoist was intended to do, while HOTA’s own collection account shows the wider logistical operation involved in preparing thousands of works for the move.

The figures describe this one gallery installation. They are not an industry-wide specification or evidence that a similarly sized hoist will suit another building.

What does a 5-tonne art hoist do?
A scissor hoist raises and lowers a platform using linked folding arms. In a gallery, that platform can carry a crate, sculpture, installation component or handling vehicle between levels without asking staff to manoeuvre the object through a conventional passenger lift or a narrow stair route. The value is not simply the weight rating. A platform large enough for an oversized crate, with walls and clearances planned around the building, lets a collection team control the route of an object from storage to exhibition space.
For HOTA, the hoist was commissioned to assist with movement of the gallery’s “iconic pieces,” according to the project feature. That wording indicates an internal logistics function: the equipment is part of the building’s back-of-house infrastructure, not an exhibit and not a general-purpose rental lift.
Why HOTA needed a bespoke installation
The building had to be designed around the load
A five-tonne rating sets the upper load envelope, but an artwork move also depends on how the load is distributed, how a crate enters the platform, where doors open, and what turning space exists at each landing. A broad platform can reduce the need to tilt or rotate a packed work. The dimensions reported for HOTA indicate that the team was solving a route-and-clearance problem as well as a lifting problem.

The project feature specifies 5m-high hoist walls and identifies them as a particular challenge. Tall walls affect structural interfaces, access for installation, alignment between levels and the way an enclosure is coordinated with the gallery architecture. The source does not publish the structural calculations, the wall materials or the installation sequence, so those details should not be inferred from the headline capacity.

There is no documented off-the-shelf equivalent
Neither the project article nor the supplier material names a standard product model. The evidence supports describing this as a site-specific design, not as proof that a catalogue “5-tonne art hoist” with identical dimensions is available. Galleries considering a similar system would need a new engineering assessment of their own shafts, floors, landings, fire strategy, access routes and artwork-handling procedures.
How HOTA prepared its collection for the move
HOTA’s account, published on 17 March 2020, describes preparation of the City Collection before the new gallery opened. HOTA said the collection then contained more than 5,000 works with a stated value of more than $32 million. That is a historical figure reported by HOTA in 2020, not a current count or valuation.
The preparation programme included selecting archival storage options, making bespoke storage boxes for some three-dimensional works, photographing objects, obtaining copyright permissions, arranging valuations and carrying out conservation work. These measures show the scale of a collection move, but HOTA’s article does not say that the scissor hoist was used for each task or for every work.
Once an object is packed, the handling sequence has to preserve its condition at every transfer point. A hoist can remove one difficult vertical movement, but staff still need a documented route from storage, a suitable crate or support, protection against vibration and impact, and a controlled hand-off at the destination. Those operational details are not published for this installation.

Who delivered the hoist?
Australian National Construction Review identifies Southwell Lifts and Hoists, based in Camden in south-west Sydney, as the company responsible for design, manufacture and installation. The account says most of the firm’s 23-person workshop team took part, supported by engineering designers, draftsmen, the factory manager, project manager and installation personnel.
The project was undertaken during COVID-19 lockdowns. The feature says the restrictions created additional difficulties, although it does not quantify delays, labour changes, transport constraints or cost impacts. That makes the lockdown a material project condition, not a measurable performance result.
General Manager Hamish McGregor described the equipment as “The special art hoist is a totally Australian made product.” That is a supplier statement reproduced by the trade publication, rather than an independent certification or manufacturing audit. McGregor also said, “We also provide after sales service to all our customers, ensuring the longevity of our products and minimising down times.” The statement records the supplier’s service offering; it does not establish a published maintenance schedule or uptime figure for HOTA’s hoist.
What the published material confirms—and what it does not
Confirmed project facts
- The hoist was commissioned for HOTA Gallery’s artwork movements.
- The reported safe working capacity is 5 tonnes.
- The platform is reported as 5.9m × 2.9m.
- The hoist walls were specified at 5m high.
- Southwell Lifts and Hoists designed, manufactured and installed it.
- The work involved a large multidisciplinary team and took place during lockdown conditions.
Details not published in the available sources
- Rated speed, acceleration or ride comfort.
- Total travel height and the number of levels served.
- Drive, control and emergency-lowering arrangements.
- Door sizes, platform loading limits by position and floor-load requirements.
- Maintenance intervals, inspection records and lifecycle costs.
- Applicable compliance documentation or safety certification for this particular installation.
- Any independent measurement of damage rates, throughput or operating performance.
Those omissions matter when comparing projects. A capacity and platform footprint alone cannot establish that two hoists are technically equivalent or suitable for the same artwork route.

How to evaluate a similar gallery hoist
Start with the artwork route, not a catalogue rating
Map the complete journey from receiving dock to storage and exhibition spaces. Record door openings, turning circles, thresholds, floor levels, ceiling obstructions and the largest packed object. Include the handling equipment that will enter the platform, because a crate and pallet truck can consume more space than the artwork itself.
Define loads in real handling conditions
List the heaviest object, the heaviest crate, concentrated wheel loads and any point loads created by skids or lifting frames. A nominal tonne rating does not describe every permissible loading arrangement. The building and hoist designer must determine how those loads transfer into the platform and supporting structure.
Coordinate the enclosure and building works
Wall height, landing protection, drainage, ventilation, fire separation, lighting and access for future repairs should be resolved with the architect and services engineers. HOTA’s 5m walls illustrate why the enclosure can become a major design package rather than a cosmetic surround.

Agree who authorises a move, how condition is checked before and after transport, what environmental limits apply and how a work is secured during pauses. The hoist is one controlled step in that chain. It cannot replace trained art handlers, suitable packing or a written incident response.

Require a handover record
Before opening the system for collection use, the owner should obtain operating instructions, load diagrams, inspection and maintenance requirements, emergency procedures, spare-parts information and the documentation required by the relevant local authorities. The published HOTA material does not say which documents were supplied, so a prospective owner should treat this as a procurement requirement rather than assume it was included.
Where the hoist fits within HOTA Gallery today
HOTA’s current gallery page describes five exhibition spaces alongside collection storage, a studio, dining and retail areas. These facilities can change as the institution develops. The presence of collection storage and multiple public-facing functions helps explain why discreet, reliable back-of-house movement is important, but the page does not provide operating data for the hoist.
The installation should therefore be understood as enabling infrastructure: it supports changes of exhibition, storage access and the movement of works that cannot be safely handled through ordinary circulation routes. It is not evidence that every large object at HOTA travels on the platform, nor that the system is available for public or external hire.

Why the project matters to art logistics
Large museums often discuss galleries, conservation studios and storage as separate spaces. A project such as HOTA’s shows that the connections between them can determine whether a collection is practical to operate. A custom platform gives the institution a route for objects whose dimensions, weight or packing arrangements exceed normal building circulation.
The reported combination of capacity, platform area and tall enclosure also demonstrates the limits of headline specifications. Safe movement depends on the building interface, the handling plan and the documentation around the equipment. Without published speed, travel, controls or certification data, the responsible conclusion is that HOTA received a bespoke solution for its own constraints—not a universally replicable model.

HOTA’s collection preparation involved thousands of works, bespoke storage and conservation activity, but the available accounts do not document every hoist movement or provide the technical safety and performance data needed for a broader comparison.
