House at Hanging Rock is a private residence in Victoria designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects. Its walls are identified by the system supplier as THERMOMASS concrete sandwich panels, selected within a brief that combined a preference for brutalist materials with demanding landscape, temperature and bushfire conditions. The house won the 2014 Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (New).

The important qualification is evidence. Composite Global Solutions describes why the panel arrangement was intended to work, but the published project accounts do not provide measured energy use, indoor-temperature records, lifecycle analysis or a controlled comparison with another wall system. The project is therefore best understood as an architectural and construction case study, not as a quantified performance test.

House at Hanging Rock: the project in brief

House at Hanging Rock is a custom home in Victoria, Australia, designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects. The residence is associated with the rocky, open landscape around Hanging Rock and was conceived as a place that could sit firmly in that setting while giving its occupants shelter from pronounced environmental conditions.

Question What the published project record establishes
Who designed it? Kerstin Thompson Architects.
What is it? A private residence in Victoria.
What wall system is named? Composite Global Solutions identifies its THERMOMASS concrete sandwich panels as the wall system used for the house.
Which major award did it win? The 2014 Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (New), announced by the Australian Institute of Architects and covered contemporaneously by ABC.
Is another award reported? Composite Global Solutions also reports a Victorian Harold Desbrowe-Annear Award for Residential Architecture in 2015.

The award confirms the project’s architectural standing; it does not certify a particular thermal result or bushfire rating. Those are separate technical questions and need to be answered from project documentation rather than inferred from the award.

Why concrete was central to the design brief

A material choice aligned with the owners’ taste

The supplier’s case study says the clients wanted a brutalist material expression. Concrete can provide the visual weight and continuity associated with that preference, allowing the structure and enclosure to read as substantial elements rather than a thin applied finish. Precast Solutions’ account likewise presents concrete as suitable to the owners’ wish for a robust home, while discussing adaptability, durability and low maintenance as general characteristics of concrete.

Those descriptions are design context, not project measurements. The available accounts do not state a maintenance schedule, service-life calculation, embodied-carbon assessment or quantified durability result for House at Hanging Rock. A reader should treat the concrete decision as a response to the brief and site, not as proof that every concrete house will have the same outcome.

A house that belongs to its landscape

The project accounts describe a setting marked by large temperature variation and bushfire exposure. The clients wanted the home to sit in the landscape while still functioning as shelter. That combination creates a precise architectural challenge: the envelope has to support a heavy, grounded expression without ignoring the changing conditions outside.

Concrete sandwich construction is relevant because it can combine a concrete architectural or structural surface with an insulated layer in one panelized wall assembly. In this project, the panel choice allowed the material language requested by the clients to remain part of the enclosure strategy rather than being treated only as an interior or decorative finish.

What THERMOMASS concrete sandwich panels are in this project

Composite Global Solutions identifies THERMOMASS as a concrete sandwich-panel system used by Kerstin Thompson Architects at the house. A sandwich panel contains concrete and insulation in a composite wall element; the system’s exact panel thicknesses, reinforcement, connectors, finishes and construction details are not given in the published case study.

The supplier describes the key arrangement as insulation positioned toward the outside of the panel, with most of the concrete mass retained on the inside. That orientation matters because it separates two functions that are often discussed together but are not identical: insulation slows heat flow, while thermal mass can absorb and release heat over time.

Part of the described strategy Role in the supplier’s explanation Evidence status for this house
Insulation toward the outside Places the insulating layer outside most of the internal concrete mass, helping form the intended thermal envelope. Reported by Composite Global Solutions; no project-specific thermal measurement is published.
Bulk of concrete mass inside Leaves substantial mass on the interior side so the wall can moderate the effect of changing conditions over the day. Supplier’s stated design rationale; no monitored indoor-temperature data for the house are reported.
Concrete sandwich panel construction Combines concrete and insulation in a panelized wall system compatible with the requested material expression. System identified for the project; detailed structural and fabrication data are not stated.

How the proposed thermal sequence works

During a hot or cold cycle, heat does not move through a wall instantly. Insulation increases resistance to heat flow, while a large internal mass can absorb heat and release it later. The timing depends on many variables, including insulation value, mass, surface exposure, ventilation, shading, solar gains, weather, occupancy and how the building is operated.

Composite Global Solutions summarizes its own rationale this way: “By placing the insulation towards the outside of the sandwich panel, and leaving the bulk of the internal mass on the inside of the structure, diurnal swings are vastly reduced without the need for additional non-passive cooling.” In an article about this house, that sentence should be read as the supplier’s description of the intended strategy. It is not a post-occupancy result measured at House at Hanging Rock.

Why the insulation position is worth explaining

Simply saying that a wall is “insulated concrete” leaves out the relationship between the layers. A similar amount of insulation can behave differently depending on where it sits relative to the mass, how thermal bridges are handled and whether the mass is exposed to the occupied space. The supplier’s account makes that position the central feature of the THERMOMASS approach used here.

However, the published material does not provide a U-value, R-value, thermal lag time, air-tightness result or modeled annual energy figure for the residence. It is not possible to calculate those values from the project description alone.

Temperature variation, shelter and passive-design claims

The house’s location and brief explain why daily temperature swings appear in the project narrative. A heavy wall with insulation arranged as described may be selected to make indoor conditions less responsive to rapid outdoor changes. That is a plausible design objective, and it is the reason the supplier connects the panel arrangement with reduced diurnal swings.

“Passive” should not be treated as a guarantee that mechanical cooling or heating is unnecessary. Actual comfort depends on orientation, glazing, shading, ventilation, airtightness, internal gains, weather and occupant behavior. None of the supplied project accounts reports the home’s operating energy, hours of mechanical cooling, indoor set points or measured comfort. The evidence supports an explanation of design intent, not a numerical claim about savings.

Bushfire requirements: what is known and what is not

Composite Global Solutions says the system was selected in the context of a required Bushfire Attack Level rating. That statement establishes that bushfire performance formed part of the brief. It does not identify the rating assigned to the site or prove that a particular panel configuration alone achieved it.

The available account does not state a BAL number, the relevant compliance documents, the test method, the construction joints, penetrations, openings or other details needed to assess bushfire compliance. Do not infer a BAL 12.5, 19, 29, 40 or Flame Zone classification from the project’s location, its concrete appearance or its award history.

What a technical review would need

  • The BAL assessment issued for the actual site and the edition of the applicable Australian Standard used for the design.
  • Panel, joint and connection details, including how windows, doors, roof junctions and service penetrations were treated.
  • Product test reports, certifications or approvals that cover the installed configuration rather than a generic panel image.
  • Construction records showing that the specified details were built and maintained.

Those documents may exist in the project file, but they are not supplied in the public case-study material summarized here.

How the house was recognized

2014 Robin Boyd Award

The Australian Institute of Architects lists House at Hanging Rock as the 2014 Robin Boyd Award winner for Residential Architecture – Houses (New). ABC’s contemporaneous awards coverage also reports the result. This is the clearest independently corroborated point in the project record and explains why the house is often described as a Robin Boyd Award-winning residence.

Harold Desbrowe-Annear Award

Composite Global Solutions’ case study additionally reports a Victorian Harold Desbrowe-Annear Award for Residential Architecture in 2015. Because that detail is presented in the supplier’s project account, it should remain attributed to that account rather than treated as a separately verified technical certification.

A design award evaluates architectural merit under an awards program. It does not substitute for an energy audit, a bushfire assessment or a lifecycle study.

What can and cannot be compared with other wall systems

The House at Hanging Rock record is useful for understanding one arrangement of insulation and concrete mass. It is not a controlled comparison between THERMOMASS and another manufacturer’s panel, an insulated masonry wall, a timber frame or a conventional cast-in-place wall. No competing-system results are provided.

Comparison axis What this project account allows you to say What it does not establish
Insulation position The supplier places insulation toward the outside of most of the internal concrete mass. That this position is always superior for every climate, orientation or building use.
Response to daily swings The stated aim is to reduce diurnal swings by combining insulation and internal mass. A measured reduction, a comfort percentage or a guaranteed energy saving.
Structural and facade requirements The panel system supported the project’s concrete-based architectural language. Its cost, span, installation speed, reinforcement schedule or finish performance at this house.
Bushfire performance Bushfire requirements formed part of the selection context. The site’s BAL classification or compliance of any unreported detail.
Evidence quality The account documents a supplier-described design rationale and an installed product. Independent post-occupancy monitoring or a peer-reviewed comparison.

For a real project decision, designers would compare complete assemblies using the same climate data, solar assumptions, thermal-bridge treatment, fire criteria, structural loads, moisture strategy, finish requirements and cost basis. House at Hanging Rock alone cannot rank those options.

What the project teaches designers and homeowners

Start with the brief, not the product name

The panel was not presented as an isolated technology purchase. The reported reasons combine a brutalist material preference, the desire to embed the house in its landscape, temperature variation and bushfire exposure. A wall system makes sense only when those requirements are written down before a product is selected.

Separate thermal mass from insulation

When reviewing a concrete sandwich wall, ask where the insulation sits, which concrete surfaces are exposed to the interior, how thermal bridges are controlled and how the wall connects to roofs, slabs and openings. “Concrete” by itself does not describe thermal performance.

Demand project-specific fire evidence

If bushfire exposure is part of the brief, request the site BAL assessment and the compliance evidence for the actual assembly. Do not use the presence of concrete as a shortcut for documenting joints, openings and penetrations.

Keep supplier claims in their proper category

A supplier case study is valuable for recording the specified product and the reasoning offered for it. It is not the same evidence as independent monitoring. A rigorous project review should label each statement as a design intention, a modeled prediction, a laboratory result or a measured in-use outcome.

Why House at Hanging Rock remains a useful case study

House at Hanging Rock brings architectural expression and environmental constraints into the same conversation. Kerstin Thompson Architects designed a private Victorian residence recognized with the 2014 Robin Boyd Award, while the supplier’s account identifies THERMOMASS concrete sandwich panels in the walls. The described layer order—insulation toward the outside and most concrete mass toward the inside—explains how the wall was intended to support the brief’s concern with daily temperature variation.

Its significance is not a published energy number; none is available in the published project accounts. The value is the clarity of the design problem and the way the reported wall strategy addresses it without abandoning the clients’ preference for substantial concrete architecture. Any stronger claim about comfort, savings, durability or bushfire compliance would require project documentation or measurements that the public sources do not provide.
