The wood frames were straightforward to build: four mitered pieces of 1 x 2 lumber, an MDF back, and layered MDF to lift the artwork. The surprise came afterward. Nine resin petries looked promising in a floor arrangement, but once the frames were hung on the bathroom wall, the display lost its impact. That result belongs to this particular artwork, arrangement, and room—not to every shadow box design.
This project account follows the original build described in DIY Shadow Box Frame (And My Artwork Fail), then turns its lessons into a practical plan for choosing depth, backing, glazing, finish, and placement before you cut wood.

What the original DIY shadow-box project was meant to display
The project began with nine resin petries, each approximately four inches in diameter. The goal was to present them as a coordinated wall collection rather than as loose objects on a shelf. Because the pieces needed visual separation and some relief from the backing, the frame was more than a flat picture frame: it had a shallow box structure and additional MDF layers inside the display area.
The published dimensions are project dimensions, not a universal cut list. Your artwork may require different lengths, interior clearances, or depth. Measure the objects themselves, including any raised edges, mounts, labels, or hardware, before buying material.

Materials and dimensions used in that build
| Part | Original project choice | What to verify for your version |
|---|---|---|
| Frame sides | Four pieces of 1 x 2 lumber, cut to approximately 10 inches | Cut length depends on your outside dimensions and the way your miters meet. |
| Corner joints | Mitered corners joined with wood glue and 1.25-inch 18-gauge nails | Confirm nail length will not break through the stock or interfere with the artwork. |
| Back | 1/4-inch MDF cut about 1/2 inch smaller than the frame’s outside dimensions | Leave enough support for attachment while keeping the back from protruding past the frame. |
| Back attachment | 3/4-inch narrow-crown staples | Finish nails are offered as an alternative if you do not have a stapler. |
| Interior relief | Layers of 1/4-inch MDF glued into the display area | Stack only enough layers to create the intended gap; test with the actual object. |
How to build the shallow wood frame
1. Measure the artwork and decide the opening
Lay the nine pieces on a work surface in the arrangement you expect to use. Measure the overall grid, the gap between pieces, and the margin around the outside. Then measure the thickest part of a petri and any support it will sit on. Your interior opening must clear the objects without allowing them to rattle or drift.
Decide whether the visible opening will be the full inside of the 1 x 2 frame or whether an inner ledge, mat, or MDF layer will cover part of it. Write down the desired outside width, outside height, and total depth before cutting. A shadow box that is comfortable for a flat print can be too shallow for dimensional objects.
2. Cut four matching frame pieces
The original maker cut four 1 x 2 pieces to approximately 10 inches and used mitered corners. Treat that number as a description of the petrie project, not a rule for yours. Set up a stop block if several pieces must match, and label each piece so the grain and orientation remain consistent.
After cutting, place the parts on a flat surface in their final orientation. Check that the miters close evenly and that the outside dimensions match your layout. Small discrepancies become obvious when several frames are installed in a grid.
3. Glue and nail the corners
Apply wood glue to the mating miter faces, bring the four pieces together, and hold the rectangle in alignment while fastening. The project used 1.25-inch 18-gauge nails. Drive fasteners where they will reinforce the joint without splitting the narrow stock. Wipe away squeeze-out before it hardens.

Check the diagonals from opposite corners. If both measurements match, the frame is square. Bunnings Australia’s alternate shadow-box guide also uses diagonal measurements as a squareness check, along with clamps and a nail gun. Its tools and dimensions belong to that separate build, but the checking method is useful here.

Cut 1/4-inch MDF to about half an inch less than the frame’s outside dimensions, as in the original project. Center it on the rear and attach it with 3/4-inch narrow-crown staples. If you do not own a stapler, finish nails are an option identified by the project author.
Before fastening all four sides, place the back on the frame and confirm that it does not twist the rectangle out of square. MDF edges can be fragile, so keep fasteners far enough from the edge to avoid blowout and use consistent spacing.
5. Build the raised interior
The original project added dimension by gluing layers of 1/4-inch MDF into the display area. Cut each layer to fit the planned arrangement, dry-fit the petries, and confirm that the stack does not hide important edges. Glue the layers only after you are satisfied with the spacing and alignment.
For a different object, you might need a continuous platform, individual risers, or a deeper cavity. Do not copy the MDF thickness without measuring: the right height is the one that supports the artwork while leaving the visual gap you intended.

6. Sand, finish, and test the display
The project author sanded the completed frame with a rotary sander. Sand the joints and exposed edges until they are safe to handle, then remove dust before applying paint or stain. Other shadow-box builds use putty to close nail holes and finish with stain or paint; those steps are optional choices from other projects, not requirements of the petrie design.
Do a complete dry run before hanging. Place the petries in the frame, stand several feet away, and view the arrangement from the angles people will actually use. Photograph the test in the room where it will live. A composition that looks balanced on a workshop floor can read differently against a wall.
Why the bathroom installation did not work for this artwork
On the breakfast-room floor, the frames arranged as a grid looked good enough to generate enthusiasm. After they were hung on the bathroom wall, that enthusiasm diminished. The author presents the wall result as the reason the design did not work well there, but does not establish a general failure rate or a single technical cause.
That distinction matters. The account is a first-person outcome for nine particular resin petries, their spacing, the frame proportions, and the bathroom setting. It is not evidence that shallow shadow boxes fail in bathrooms or that this construction cannot display other art.

Use a room-specific review before committing to wall holes
- Check scale: View the full group at the distance from which it will normally be seen. Individual four-inch objects can lose presence when separated across a large wall.
- Check spacing: Mark the outside edges and gaps with painter’s tape. Adjust the grid on the wall before installing hardware.
- Check sightlines: Stand at the doorway, the sink, and the room’s main approach. A display can look coherent straight on but fragment from common angles.
- Check surrounding surfaces: Compare the frame finish and object colors with the wall, lighting, mirror, trim, and nearby fixtures. The floor test cannot show those interactions.
- Check practical exposure: Make sure the chosen wall keeps the objects clear of splashes, towels, cleaning tools, and accidental contact. This is a placement decision for your room, not a claim about all bathrooms.
Low-risk ways to test the composition
- Cut paper rectangles to the outside size of each frame.
- Tape the rectangles to the proposed wall in the exact grid.
- Live with the arrangement through the room’s normal lighting and viewing positions.
- Move the group, tighten the gaps, or reduce the number of frames if the composition feels scattered.
- Only then mark hardware locations and hang the finished pieces.
Construction choices to settle before cutting
Shallow versus deeper construction
| Choice | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow 1 x 2-style frame | Objects with modest relief, such as the resin petries in the original project | Interior layers and the backing consume part of the available depth. |
| Deeper box frame | Artwork with substantial projection or a larger gap from the face | A related large-art tutorial selected a 2.5-inch overall depth for that particular artwork; that measurement does not transfer automatically to this project. |
| Rabbeted or retained back | Builds where the backing or glazing must sit in a defined channel | A deeper frame may use a rabbet or another retaining method instead of simply stapling a rear panel. |
Backing methods
The exact project attaches MDF to the rear of a shallow rectangle. If your box is deeper, you may need a rabbet, cleat, removable panel, or other retaining system so the artwork can be installed and serviced without damaging the frame. Choose the method alongside the artwork’s own backing rather than treating one attachment style as universal.

Glazing and the risk of a soft-looking image
The original petrie project, as described, used an open front. If you add glass, plan a separate slot or retaining strip and account for the gap between the artwork and the pane.
In a related large-art tutorial, Kristi reports: “Unless your artwork is right up against the glass, or separated only by the thickness of a mat, non-reflective glass will make the artwork appear blurry when viewed up close or at an angle.” That is her observation from that project, not an independently validated optical test or a guarantee about every glazing product. Test a sample at the distance and angle from which your objects will be viewed.
Finish and corner treatment
Paint, stain, or a clear finish changes how strongly the frame competes with the objects. Putty can conceal nail holes before finishing, while a visible fastener pattern may suit a more utilitarian look. Select the finish after viewing a sample board beside the artwork; the right choice depends on the room and the visual role you want the frame to play.

For the wood version
- 1 x 2 lumber for the four frame sides
- 1/4-inch MDF for the back and any interior risers
- Wood glue
- 1.25-inch 18-gauge nails for the mitered corners
- 3/4-inch narrow-crown staples, or finish nails for the backing
- Measuring tape, pencil, square, and a way to cut accurate miters
- Rotary sander or sanding block
- Clamps and eye protection as needed for your equipment
The original project does not mean every builder needs every tool. If you are assembling one small frame, hand tools may be sufficient; repeated frames benefit from a stop block, clamps, and a nailer.
A separate full-tool alternative
Bunnings Australia’s guide lists a compound mitre saw, hammer, measuring tape, nail gun, safety glasses, sanding block, clamps, hollow-wall anchors, stain, putty, PVA glue, and pine among its example tools and materials. Those specifications belong to its own project. Borrow the ideas that solve your problem, but recalculate dimensions and hardware for your artwork and wall.

A lightweight craft alternative
For a small, low-weight display, Moms and Crafters describes a cardboard shadow box made with corrugated cardboard, a ruler, a utility knife or scissors, hot glue, and decorative materials. Cardboard is a different category from the nailed MDF-and-lumber frame: it is easier to cut and lighter to hang, but it should be reserved for objects whose weight and handling demands it can safely support.
Troubleshooting before and after assembly
The corners do not close
Dry-fit the pieces on a flat surface and inspect each miter for a high spot or an incorrect angle. Recut or sand the joint before adding glue. Do not use nails to pull a visibly open corner into alignment; that can lock the error into the frame.
The frame is out of square
Measure both diagonals. If they differ, loosen the clamp pressure or fastening sequence while the glue is workable, then push the longer diagonal toward equality. Recheck the back panel after installation because a misaligned MDF back can preserve the distortion.
The artwork touches the front or looks buried
Remove or add one MDF layer and test again with the real object. The visible gap is a design choice, so judge it from normal viewing distance rather than only with a ruler.
The glazing looks hazy
Check the distance between the object and pane, the viewing angle, and the type of glass. If the object is not close to the glazing, compare a clear sample with the non-reflective option before committing to a full set of panes.
The finished grid feels wrong on the wall
Return to the taped-paper test. Reposition the group, alter the gaps, or use fewer frames before drilling new holes. The original project demonstrates why a successful floor arrangement is not a substitute for a room-scale wall test.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you measured every object and its thickest projection?
- Have you chosen the outside dimensions and total depth before cutting?
- Will your backing method support the weight and allow installation?
- Have you tested the actual finish beside the artwork and wall?
- If using glazing, have you checked clarity from normal viewing angles?
- Have you taped the proposed arrangement in the final room?
- Are the anchors and wall locations appropriate for the finished weight?
What this project teaches
The useful lesson is not that a 1 x 2 shadow box is destined to disappoint. It is that fabrication and presentation are separate decisions. The original frame construction can be reproduced with ordinary lumber, MDF, glue, nails, and staples, yet the finished display still depends on scale, spacing, depth, sightlines, finish, and the room around it. Build a measured prototype, test the composition where it will hang, and let the artwork—not a borrowed cut list—set the final dimensions.
