How Irving Smith Architects Rebuilt Shelter at Bach with Two Roofs

After a 2014 cyclone stripped away the eucalyptus canopy around four Golden Bay baches, Irving Smith Architects rebuilt shelter with extended roofs, a low shade building and an enclosed outdoor kitchen—adapting the architecture while leaving room for the forest to return.

Bach with Two Roofs is a holiday-accommodation project in Golden Bay, New Zealand, by Irving Smith Architects. It began as a group of small baches set among eucalyptus trees. When a 2014 cyclone removed that canopy, the buildings were suddenly exposed to intense sun and wind. Rather than treating the damage as a reason to start over, the architects added a low shade building, an enclosed outdoor kitchen and extended roofs that recreate some of the shelter and filtered light the forest had provided.

What is Bach with Two Roofs?

The project is an adaptation of an existing holiday compound, not a newly built house designed on an untouched site. Architectural Record reports that Irving Smith Architects developed a cluster of four houses in Golden Bay between 2007 and 2012. The compact buildings were placed on a hilltop among eucalyptus trees, with the vegetation forming a leafy ceiling over the spaces between them.

After the later intervention, the project was recorded at approximately 2,000 square feet, with completion listed as 2017 by Architectural Record (2017). The name refers to the additional roof planes that hover above the original hut forms. Those second roofs are both a practical response to the changed site and a visual device that makes the altered relationship between buildings, weather and landscape legible.

Where is the project, and who designed it?

Bach with Two Roofs is in Golden Bay, at the northwestern end of New Zealand’s South Island. The setting is a holiday destination rather than a permanent suburban neighborhood, so the buildings are used as short-term accommodation and outdoor living spaces.

Irving Smith Architects designed the original group and the post-cyclone additions. The New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) identifies the project as a small group of baches on a hilltop site whose eucalyptus trees were central to the experience of the place. Architecture Now’s coverage of the 2018 New Zealand Architecture Awards names the project in the Housing – Alterations and Additions category.

How did the 2014 cyclone change the house?

The cyclone felled or cleared the eucalyptus forest that had surrounded the baches. Before the storm, the trees moderated the light, reduced the sense of exposure and made the spaces between the huts feel sheltered. Once the canopy disappeared, the same buildings faced a much more open hilltop. Sun reached areas that had previously been shaded, and wind could move directly across the site.

The change was therefore architectural as well as ecological. The huts themselves had not necessarily become unusable, but the conditions that made them comfortable had changed. The interstitial spaces between buildings no longer had the filtered, leafy quality that defined the original arrangement. The design response concentrated on rebuilding that missing middle ground rather than reproducing the forest as a literal landscape installation.

What was added after the trees were gone?

A low shade building

The architects placed a low building forward on the site. It contains an enclosed outdoor kitchen and establishes a new, deliberately shaped clearing. Its position gives the compound a fresh focal point after the forest’s removal, while its low profile keeps the intervention subordinate to the surrounding huts and hilltop setting.

This building is not presented as a replacement house or a standalone pavilion. Its purpose is to organize outdoor use and provide a piece of built shade where the trees once did. The kitchen makes the clearing functional for holiday living, allowing cooking and gathering to remain connected to the weather without relying entirely on the exposed spaces around the original huts.

Extended roofs over the huts

The roofs of the existing baches were extended to shelter the spaces below. The resulting overhangs create protected thresholds and outdoor rooms without enclosing every part of the compound. Their edges are arranged to filter the strong Tākaka light, recalling the broken pattern of illumination that had passed through the eucalyptus canopy.

Architectural Record describes an exterior steel framework supporting the extensions, with recessive timber finishes that allow the additions to sit quietly against the original forms. A second roof continues to collect rainwater. The roof is therefore doing several jobs at once: making shade, defining habitable edges, carrying the visual identity of the project and maintaining a water-collection role.

What is the double roof for?

Earlier condition Post-cyclone architectural response What the change does
Eucalyptus canopy over the hilltop baches Extended roof planes and a low shade building Reintroduces overhead shelter without rebuilding a forest canopy
Soft, filtered light beneath the trees Roof edges that screen and break up direct light Creates a more graduated transition between bright sky and darker interiors
Protected spaces between huts Covered thresholds and a new outdoor clearing Supports cooking, gathering and movement between the accommodation units
Tree-covered site with limited direct exposure Steel-framed, timber-finished roof additions Responds to the newly open site while remaining visually recessive

The “two roofs” are not described as a universal cyclone-proofing system. They are a site-specific way to restore qualities that disappeared with the trees. The original hut roofs remain legible, while the hovering additions make a new layer of protection above them. This separation between old and new is important: the intervention acknowledges the damage instead of pretending the landscape has not changed.

How does the project use light and enclosure?

The design works through gradations rather than a simple inside-versus-outside division. The low kitchen building gives the clearing a protected destination. The roof extensions create intermediate zones where a person can stand, sit or move between rooms without being fully exposed. Light arrives through the gaps around and beneath the new roof planes, so the edges remain bright while the interiors can stay comparatively dark.

Simon Wilson’s jury citation for the 2018 New Zealand Architecture Awards describes the contrast between hovering roofs and box-like forms, dark interiors and bright Tākaka light. That contrast explains why the additions are more than a weather accessory. They alter perception: the old hut volumes read as dense, grounded objects, while the new roofs appear to float above them and regulate the transition to the sky.

  • [Wide Applications]: These corrugated galvanized panels are ideal for construction roofs or fencing, such as garages, garden sheds, patios, stables, chicken coops, mobile homes, sheds, wall decorations, and other construction or hardware-related covering needs

The filtered light is also a memory of the lost canopy. The architects did not attempt to imitate eucalyptus branches in material or shape. Instead, they reproduced the environmental experience at the scale architecture can control: shade, partial brightness and a sense of being under something rather than simply surrounded by open air.

Which materials and construction ideas matter?

  • Extended exterior steel framework: The steel structure makes the roof additions visibly separate from the hut boxes and allows the new shelter to project beyond the original walls.
  • Recessive timber finishes: Timber keeps the intervention compatible with the baches and the landscape rather than turning the additions into a bright, competing object.
  • Second roofs: The extra roof layer provides shade and continues to collect rainwater, retaining a practical function alongside its spatial and atmospheric role.
  • Low horizontal placement: The shade building sits forward and low, creating a clearing without dominating the hilltop group.

These descriptions come from Architectural Record’s 2017 project account. They establish material intent and arrangement, but they do not establish a tested structural rating, a measured reduction in solar gain or a quantified rainwater yield.

Was the design meant to change again as the forest returned?

Yes. Architectural Record describes the additions as adaptable as the forest grows back. That wording matters because the project is not a final, permanent substitute for the eucalyptus canopy. The roofs and shade building address the exposed condition that followed the cyclone, while the vegetation may gradually produce a different balance of sun, wind and enclosure.

This gives the project a deliberately open-ended character. Built shade is immediate and controllable; a recovering forest is slow and uncertain. By using both, the design can serve the holiday accommodation now without assuming that the site will always look as it did after the storm. The architecture is prepared to become one layer in a changing landscape rather than the landscape’s permanent replacement.

What does “adaptation” mean in this project?

Adaptation here means changing the architectural arrangement when the environmental conditions that supported it have disappeared. The baches were not simply repaired after a fallen-tree event. Their roofs were extended, their outdoor spaces were reorganized and a new kitchen building was introduced because the original relationship between huts and canopy no longer existed.

The project also shows why adaptation can be more precise than rebuilding. The architects preserved the compact hut forms and the holiday-compound character, then added only the elements needed to restore shelter and make the exposed site usable. The result keeps evidence of the cyclone in the architecture: visitors can read the older boxes, the hovering additions and the newly cleared space as successive layers of the site’s history.

Wilson’s 2018 jury citation summarizes that position: “This project shows that architecture is a process, and design must sometimes adapt to circumstances beyond human control.” In the citation, the forest’s loss is the event and the roofed shelter is the architectural adjustment. The statement is about process, not a claim that the buildings can prevent future storms or control the wider landscape.

How does the original condition compare with the completed project?

Aspect Before the 2014 cyclone After the 2017 adaptation
Primary overhead shelter Eucalyptus trees occupied the hilltop above and around the huts. Extended hut roofs and the low shade building provide built shelter.
Sunlight Canopy produced broken, filtered light. Roof edges filter direct light while preserving bright outdoor areas.
Wind exposure Forest formed a vegetated buffer around the accommodation. The open condition is addressed spatially with covered edges; no project-specific wind-performance figure is published.
Outdoor organization Spaces between the huts were defined by trees and their shade. A new clearing, including an enclosed outdoor kitchen, becomes the forward focus.
Water collection Original hut roofs served the earlier arrangement. The added second roofs continue to collect rainwater.
Long-term landscape Mature eucalyptus canopy shaped the experience. Architecture accommodates the exposed phase while the forest may grow back.

What is known about size, date and cost?

  • Location and use: Golden Bay, New Zealand; holiday accommodation.
  • Original group: Four houses developed between 2007 and 2012, according to Architectural Record.
  • Recorded project size: 2,000 square feet, Architectural Record, 2017.
  • Completion: 2017, Architectural Record, 2017.
  • Cost: Architectural Record withholds project and construction costs, so a reliable total or comparison is not available.

The dates describe different stages rather than a contradiction: the huts were built first, the cyclone altered the site in 2014, and the roof-and-clearing response was completed and documented in 2017.

Which awards did Bach with Two Roofs receive?

The project won the 2017 Nelson/Marlborough Small Project Architecture award listed by the New Zealand Institute of Architects. Architecture Now reports that it also received the 2018 New Zealand Architecture Award for Housing – Alterations and Additions. These awards recognize the completed adaptation, including its handling of the altered landscape and the relationship between old hut forms and new shelter.

What the published record does not establish

No project-specific figures are published for energy use, indoor temperature, wind resistance, water volume, carbon emissions, durability or maintenance. The available descriptions explain why the roofs and shade building were designed and identify their materials, but they do not constitute a laboratory test or post-occupancy performance study.

It is therefore accurate to say that the additions are intended to restore shade, shelter and filtered light, and that the second roofs continue to collect rainwater. It would go beyond the published record to claim a particular percentage reduction in heat, a certified cyclone rating, a guaranteed water-saving result or a measured environmental improvement.

Why the project remains relevant

Bach with Two Roofs offers a clear example of designing for a landscape that has already changed and may change again. The cyclone removed a natural roof; the architects supplied a constructed one without erasing the original baches. Their response combines a modest new building, carefully extended roof lines and material choices that keep the additions quiet.

For readers interested in architectural painting or representation, the project also provides a legible study in contrast: heavy box forms below, light roof planes above; dark interiors against bright Tākaka light; a cleared foreground set against the possibility of returning forest. Those contrasts are not decorative afterthoughts. They are the visual evidence of an adaptation strategy.

Further documentation appears in Irving Smith Architects’ publications bibliography, which lists the 2023 book Unfinished and Far Far Away: The Architecture of Irving Smith Architects and identifies project material on pages 20–29.
