Maureen Footer’s eight-room apartment in a 1922 neo-Georgian New York building does not imitate a historical Paris salon. It keeps the building’s gracious prewar plan, then reworks that framework with unusually saturated orange and apple green, tiger silk velvet, antiques, modern furniture, and objects gathered through a lifetime of travel. The result is Footer’s contemporary interpretation of the postwar Paris interiors she studied while writing about Dior’s decorators.
A prewar apartment rebuilt around modern life
The apartment overlooks the Guggenheim Museum and was in what Footer calls a “bohemian state of neglect” when she found it. She wanted the proportions and sequence of the rooms, however, so the renovation was a gut renovation without abandoning the original plan. Architect Anthony Minichetti shaped the architectural work, while Footer directed the decorative language.

The most consequential planning decision was to preserve the eight-room arrangement. The second bedroom became a paneled library rather than being absorbed into a larger entertaining space. That choice matters because the apartment is organized around actual habits: reading beside a window, drinking coffee in the library, working at the dining table, and having friends over. Historical reference is present, but it follows the owner’s routine instead of turning the home into a period set.
Footer was researching Dior and His Decorators: Victor Grandpierre, Georges Geffroy, and the New Look when she discovered the apartment. Her account connects the interiors to the Paris rooms associated with Christian Dior and decorators Victor Grandpierre and Georges Geffroy. The feature is a first-person home account, so those historical associations should be understood as Footer’s influences and interpretation rather than an independent verification of every attribution.

The color strategy: restraint in form, intensity on the surface
The apartment’s architecture stays comparatively composed while the finishes carry the drama. Orange-lacquered walls in the entry establish the arrival sequence. Apple green appears elsewhere against furniture, textiles, and art. Tiger silk velvet adds a graphic, animal-patterned note without requiring ornate architectural changes. Footer summarizes her approach this way: “I, however, amped the saturation to a 21st-century level that made my painter shake his head in doubt.”
That sentence explains why the rooms feel current despite their historical references. Saturation is not used everywhere at once. It is concentrated in strategic surfaces and upholstery, while paneling, rugs, chests, tables, and paintings provide areas for the eye to rest. A homeowner borrowing the idea can separate the decisions: choose a strong color for one architectural moment, repeat it in a textile or object, and leave enough quieter material around it to keep the room legible.

An entry can carry a more assertive color than a room where people read or sleep because it is experienced in short transitions. Footer’s orange-lacquered walls turn the threshold into a deliberate event. The lacquer description also signals a reflective finish, which changes how daylight and artificial light move across the color. For a similar effect, test a high-sheen sample on the actual wall and view it at morning, afternoon, and night; a saturated orange can shift markedly as the light source changes.
How apple green avoids becoming a theme color
Apple green is vivid, but it does not have to dominate every plane. In this apartment it participates in a larger composition that includes antiques, modern pieces, patterned velvet, and art. Repeating a bright green in two or three small moments can create continuity without painting every room green. The useful principle is controlled recurrence, not uniform coverage.

Room by room: the materials that make the concept credible
| Room | Reported elements | Design function |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Orange-lacquered walls | A high-impact arrival and a first statement of saturation |
| Library | Cerused-oak paneling, Fortuny pillows, Chinese chest, Sultanabad rug, vintage Elsie de Wolfe slipper chairs | A reading room where warm wood and collected pieces temper the color story |
| Dining room | Saarinen table, Brno chairs from Knoll, Aubusson tapestry, silk velvet walls identified as Lee Jofa; new leather on the chairs | A working and entertaining room that combines modern utility with historic texture |
| Butler’s pantry | Custom wallpaper inspired by Armand-Albert Rateau | A small service space given its own decorative identity |
| Bedroom | Hand-painted Gracie wallpaper and fretwork on shutters | A garden-like enclosure with pattern concentrated around openings |
The library: a collected room rather than a showroom
The library’s cerused-oak paneling is described as an homage to Jean-Michel Frank. The pale, textured wood gives the room an architectural envelope, while Fortuny pillows, a Chinese chest, a Sultanabad rug, and vintage Elsie de Wolfe slipper chairs add different periods and materials. None of those pieces needs to match the others in date or origin. Their shared role is to make the room useful and accumulated.
For painting purposes, the lesson is to treat existing wood as a color in its own right. Cerused oak has a pale, grain-driven presence; surrounding it with another competing pattern on every wall would erase its effect. If paneling is part of your room, sample wall colors beside the wood rather than on a separate board. The undertone of the finish can make a supposedly neutral paint look pink, yellow, or green.

The dining room pairs a Saarinen table and Brno chairs with an Aubusson tapestry and silk velvet on the walls identified in the feature as Lee Jofa. Footer chose new leather for the Brno chairs, an update that keeps the chairs functional instead of treating them as untouchable museum pieces. She also insisted that the paint be applied by brush rather than roller.
Brush application is a visual decision as much as a technical one. It can leave a subtle directional texture and a hand-worked character, but it demands an experienced painter, consistent loading, and careful control at joins and corners. It will not hide poor wall preparation. Before choosing the method, repair cracks, smooth old roller stipple where necessary, seal stains, and make sure the substrate is uniformly primed. A brush cannot compensate for an uneven surface.

The pantry: pattern in a small footprint
The butler’s pantry uses custom wallpaper inspired by Armand-Albert Rateau. A service room is often treated as leftover square footage; here it receives a specific historical reference. Small rooms are useful places to test a strong pattern because the commitment is limited, but the installation still needs careful planning around doors, shelves, switches, and corners. Draw the elevations first and decide where the repeat will land before ordering or cutting paper.
The bedroom: a garden effect made from wall and window details
Hand-painted Gracie wallpaper and fretwork on the shutters create the bedroom’s garden effect. The illusion comes from the relationship between surfaces and openings, not from a single mural alone. If you adapt the idea, coordinate the wallpaper scale with the size of the room and the width of the shutters. Fretwork that is too busy beside a small repeat can make the wall feel restless; a larger, quieter pattern can support the lattice-like detail.

Footer’s collecting gives the apartment its personal geography. She cites Japanese temple dogs, Burmese boxes, Indian palanquin finials, pre-Columbian sculpture, and camel bones from Wadi Rum. Furniture was acquired in Paris and Versailles. These objects are not presented as a themed display; they sit within rooms used for coffee, reading, meals, work, and conversation.
Footer says, “My travels played a decisive role as well, for from the moment I arrived in Japan at age 16, wanderlust has consumed me.” The statement clarifies why the apartment cannot be reduced to “Dior style.” The Paris reference is one layer in a larger life story. Travel-sourced objects keep the palette from becoming a reconstruction of one city and period, while contemporary pieces such as the Saarinen table keep the rooms from feeling frozen in the past.

A practical way to mix periods without visual confusion
- Choose one architectural anchor. Paneling, a wallpapered wall, or a strongly colored entry can establish the room’s identity.
- Add one modern utility piece. A table or chair with a clear silhouette prevents the composition from becoming purely antique.
- Group collected objects by relationship, not nationality. Repeat a material, height, color, or shape so disparate pieces read as a deliberate arrangement.
- Leave breathing room. A few empty surfaces make unusual objects more visible than a crowded display would.
How to borrow the apartment’s painting ideas without copying it
Start with a use-based color map
List what happens in each room before selecting paint. A reading area may benefit from a less reflective, quieter finish; an entry can tolerate more visual intensity; a dining room may need color that works under both daylight and warm evening lamps. Footer’s apartment demonstrates that the palette follows routines as much as references.
Test saturation at full size
Small paint chips understate the force of a saturated color. Paint large sample boards or broad test sections, leaving them in place for several days. Check the color beside wood, upholstery, rugs, and metal, not against a blank white wall. Orange and apple green are especially sensitive to neighboring colors and changing light.
Coordinate sheen with the surface
A reflective finish can make a saturated color feel brighter and more architectural, as the entry’s lacquered treatment suggests. Matte or low-sheen finishes generally quiet a color and reduce glare in rooms used for reading or sleeping. The right sheen depends on wall condition, cleaning needs, and the amount of light; do not select it solely from a photograph.
Plan brushwork as a craft process
If you want the hand-painted character Footer requested, discuss the finish with the painter before work begins. Agree on brush type, number of coats, drying time, edge treatment, and how repairs will be blended. Protect adjacent trim and floors, maintain a wet edge, and keep lighting consistent while checking the surface. Brush marks should look intentional, not like evidence of rushed coverage.

Use wallpaper and paint together
The bedroom and pantry show two different ways to make pattern architectural. Wallpaper can define a small room or frame a view; paint can connect that room to the rest of the home through a repeated color. Order samples of the paper and paint together, because printed pattern and painted color often shift each other’s apparent brightness.
What the feature establishes—and what it does not
Veranda’s feature, published September 21, 2026, establishes Footer’s description of the apartment, her renovation choices, the named furnishings and materials, and the influences she identifies. It does not establish current prices, product availability, exact editions of every named piece, independent provenance for the collected objects, or third-party confirmation of the historical relationships. The apartment’s details should therefore be read as a documented homeowner account, not as a definitive catalog of Dior-era interiors.

The same qualification applies to contemporary materials. The feature identifies silk velvet on the dining-room walls as Lee Jofa and names Fortuny pillows, Gracie wallpaper, Knoll chairs, and other makers in connection with this home. Those references describe what was reported in the apartment; they do not guarantee that the identical colors, fabrics, wallpapers, or editions are currently sold.
Why this New York home feels like a tribute rather than a reconstruction
Footer retains the prewar architecture, studies postwar Paris, intensifies the colors for the present, and fills the rooms with objects tied to her own travels. That sequence prevents the historical references from becoming a costume. The apartment’s strongest idea is not a particular orange, chair, or wallpaper. It is the decision to let architecture provide order while paint, textiles, furniture, art, and collected objects reveal a life being lived now.
