The Melbourne Convention Centre needed an acoustic envelope for event spaces beside major roads and a nearby helicopter pad. Durra Panel’s documented solution was a three-part roof-and-ceiling assembly intended to limit noise intrusion from outside while adding sound absorption inside. The project covered 22,400 m² as a complete system; the manufacturer separately reports more than 16,000 m² of roofing panels over the new exhibition space.

Those figures describe different scopes, and the available project material does not report a measured decibel reduction, STC rating or other installed acoustic test result. The evidence supports what the system was designed to do and how it was built, not a quantified claim about the final noise level.
Why traffic noise was a design problem
Convention centres have an unusually difficult acoustic brief. A single building may contain exhibition halls, meeting rooms, foyers and performance-style event spaces, each with different reverberation and speech requirements. At Melbourne Convention Centre, the site was close to major roads. Vehicle noise could therefore reach occupied rooms through the roof, walls, openings and service routes, while hard interior surfaces could allow whatever entered the building to remain audible for too long.

Durra Panel’s project account says the panels were selected to help “mitigate noise intrusion” from those roads and to provide internal acoustic absorption in event spaces. This is a design intent statement from the manufacturer, not a published measurement of traffic noise before and after construction.
The helicopter-pad challenge
The manufacturer also identifies a nearby helicopter pad as a source of low-frequency noise. Low-frequency energy is a particular concern for large halls: it can travel efficiently through building structures, is harder to absorb with lightweight treatments and may be perceived as rumble rather than a clearly identifiable sound. The case study describes this as an additional acoustic demand that the roof-and-ceiling design had to address.

What the Durra system comprised
Durra Panel describes the work as a three-part roof and ceiling system forming an acoustic envelope over the venue. The published project area is 22,400 m² for that combined system. In the same account, the company says that more than 16,000 m² of roofing panels were erected over the new exhibition space. These are not interchangeable measurements: one refers to the complete three-part roof-and-ceiling assembly, while the other refers specifically to roofing panels in a defined part of the building.
| Project detail | Documented information | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Overall assembly | Three-part roof and ceiling system | A coordinated roof/ceiling build-up rather than isolated wall or ceiling panels |
| Reported system area | 22,400 m² | Manufacturer’s stated area for the three-part system; project year is not stated |
| Roofing-panel area | More than 16,000 m² | Manufacturer’s separate figure for roofing panels over the new exhibition space |
| Finishes | Natural and Soundsorb Pro | The two finishes identified in the project case study |
| Acoustic objective | Mitigate external noise intrusion and provide internal absorption | Design intent; no project-specific decibel or rating result is published |
Why the distinction between areas matters
Large construction projects often report several areas: a complete assembly, a roof-only package, and a particular hall or expansion zone. Adding the 22,400 m² and 16,000 m² numbers would double-count parts of the work. For procurement, scheduling and embodied-material calculations, the relevant area depends on whether the question concerns the entire acoustic envelope or only the exhibition-space roof.

How the assembly addressed the two acoustic needs
Reducing the path for outside noise
A roof and ceiling assembly can contribute to isolation by creating layered construction between the exterior environment and occupied space. Continuity, junction detailing and the treatment of penetrations are as important as the panel material itself. In this project, the system was conceived at building scale, so its purpose was to form a broad envelope over event areas rather than to act as a small, local absorber.
The available case study does not publish the layer thicknesses, junction details, transmission-loss curves or a field test. It is therefore accurate to say that the system was intended to limit intrusion, but not to assign it a sound-transmission class, decibel reduction or helicopter-noise limit.
Absorbing sound inside event spaces
Isolation and absorption solve different problems. Isolation concerns sound crossing the building envelope; absorption controls reflections after sound is already inside a room. In a convention hall, absorption can reduce reverberation and improve the conditions for announcements, presentations and conversations. Durra Panel identifies Natural and Soundsorb Pro finishes for the project and says the system provided internal acoustic absorption within the event spaces.
No reverberation-time target, speech-intelligibility score or octave-band absorption coefficients are given in the project material. Those measurements would be needed to judge how the finished rooms performed for a particular event format.
Considering low-frequency sound
The helicopter-pad reference signals that low-frequency control was part of the brief. Low-frequency performance depends on the complete build-up—including mass, cavities, structural connections and possible vibration paths—rather than on a finish name alone. The case study explains the demand but does not disclose a low-frequency test curve or a measured result at the venue.

Project team and responsibilities
The case study names the organisations involved in delivering the building and its acoustic package:
- Woods Bagot: architect.
- Probuild and Multiplex: builders identified by the project page.
- Signal & Hobbs: installer.
- Marshall Day: acoustic consultant.
Listing the acoustic consultant is significant because acoustic criteria, modelling, detailing and commissioning normally require specialist coordination. However, the source does not publish the consultant’s design calculations or a signed post-completion test report, so the team list should not be read as evidence of a particular achieved rating.
How the large modules were installed
Rather than assembling every component at height, the reported method was to build large modules on the ground and then crane them into position. Durra Steel Sections formed part of the assembly, and the manufacturer says its Durra Lifting Frame was used for the hoisting operation.
- Prepare the module at ground level. Components were assembled into large roof-and-ceiling units before lifting.
- Connect the lifting frame. The Durra Lifting Frame was used as the manufacturer’s specified lifting aid for the modules.
- Crane the unit into position. Completed modules were hoisted to the required location over the exhibition-space structure.
- Set and integrate the module. The lifted unit was positioned as part of the wider roof and ceiling system, with the remaining construction and service coordination completed on site.
Ground assembly can move repetitive work away from an elevated work face and make module dimensions easier to control. In this project, though, the available evidence does not independently quantify installation speed, labour savings, safety improvement or acoustic benefits attributable to the lifting frame. Those are potential advantages of the method, not measured project outcomes.
What a lifting plan would still need to establish
A project team applying a similar method would need a crane study, module-weight schedule, lifting points, temporary bracing, exclusion zones, wind limits and a sequence for connecting services and permanent restraints. None of those engineering values is provided in the case study, so they cannot be inferred for Melbourne Convention Centre.

What is—and is not—reported about performance
The strongest documented claims concern purpose, scale, finishes and installation. The sources do not provide:
- a before-and-after traffic-noise measurement;
- a helicopter-noise level or low-frequency attenuation figure;
- an STC, Rw, NRC or equivalent project rating;
- in-room reverberation-time or speech-intelligibility results;
- a project-specific cost or cost-benefit calculation.
Consequently, “mitigate” should be read as the stated design objective. It should not be rewritten as “cut traffic noise by a stated number of decibels” or “achieved a particular acoustic class.” A quantified claim would require a test report identifying the measurement method, locations, frequency bands, operating conditions and date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.The project’s environmental claim
Durra Panel characterizes Melbourne Convention Centre as the first convention centre to receive a 6-Star Green Star environmental rating. That is a claim attributed to the manufacturer in the available project material; the retrieved sources do not independently verify the certification record or identify the rating year.

Green Star recognition and acoustic performance are separate matters. An environmental rating may cover energy, materials, water, indoor environment and other categories, but it does not substitute for an acoustic test of traffic or helicopter noise. The two claims should therefore be reported independently.
How to evaluate a similar roof-and-ceiling system
For another large venue facing road or aviation noise, the Melbourne project suggests a practical set of questions. They are evaluation criteria, not a comparison with a competing system.

1. Define the noise sources
Map roads, elevated roadways, rail lines, flight paths, plant rooms and loading areas. Record whether the dominant problem is intermittent peaks, continuous broadband noise or low-frequency rumble. A helicopter pad, for example, may require a different treatment strategy from ordinary road traffic.
2. Separate isolation from absorption
Specify envelope isolation targets for the roof, walls, doors and penetrations, then specify interior absorption targets for each room type. A ceiling that absorbs reflections cannot by itself guarantee that exterior noise will not enter.
3. Design the complete build-up
Review panel layers, cavities, structural bridges, roof coverings, service penetrations and perimeter junctions together. Request laboratory data for the proposed construction and a field-verification plan for the installed condition.
4. Plan modular construction early
If modules will be assembled on the ground, confirm transport routes, crane capacity, lifting points, temporary stability and the order in which services and finishes are installed. The lifting method should be engineered for the actual module geometry and weight.
5. Define acceptance tests
Before construction, agree on the measurements that will demonstrate success: façade or roof sound insulation, room reverberation time, speech intelligibility, low-frequency performance and any operational noise limits. Without those criteria, a project can document intent and area but still lack a defensible statement of achieved acoustic performance.
Bottom line on the Melbourne Convention Centre case
Durra Panel’s documented approach was a building-scale roof and ceiling envelope for a convention centre exposed to major-road noise and low-frequency sound from a nearby helicopter pad. The stated 22,400 m² system used Natural and Soundsorb Pro finishes; more than 16,000 m² of roofing panels were reported separately for the new exhibition space. Large modules were ground-assembled and crane-hoisted with the Durra Lifting Frame.
