Midjourney is making image personalization more iterative: creators can steer generations with saved aesthetic profiles, then use the web Editor to adapt an image rather than starting over. That is useful for developing a recognizable visual direction, exploring campaign concepts, or reshaping a scene. It is not the same as exact identity preservation, automated audience targeting, or the pixel-level control of a professional image editor.
What “personalization” means in Midjourney
Image personalization can mean several different things: applying a preferred aesthetic, adapting a picture around a particular subject, producing variants for a campaign, or tailoring visuals to individual customers. Midjourney is most useful for the first three as creative tasks. It does not, by itself, connect customer data to an automated marketing system or enforce a complete brand rulebook.
Midjourney’s Personalization feature lets users build multiple profiles from images they select or like. A profile represents a visual preference—such as a palette, mood, composition, or genre—and can be applied to prompts with a profile ID:

The --stylize parameter controls how much the profile influences the result. Its documented range is 0–1000, with a default of 100. More influence can create a stronger house aesthetic, but may also pull the image away from a precise brief. If subject, composition, or color requirements matter more than style, reduce stylization or compare a generation without the profile.
Profiles, references, and editing do different jobs
These features are related, but not interchangeable. A profile steers taste; references guide a particular generation; the Editor changes an image.

References do not guarantee exact reproduction. The current version comparison lists Omni Reference for V7, while Character Reference is listed for V6; support varies by model. Check Midjourney’s version comparison before building a workflow around a specific reference feature.

What the web Editor adds
The browser-based Editor works with Midjourney creations and outside images. Its documented tools and workflows include Remix, Vary Region (inpainting), Pan, Zoom Out, resizing, and painting. In practical terms, repainting asks the system to regenerate a selected area; Pan extends the image toward an edge; Zoom Out generates beyond the existing frame; Remix lets you change the prompt while making variations. These are generative operations, so a change can affect nearby details as well as the area you meant to adjust.
To edit a Midjourney image, open it from the Create or Organize page, choose Edit in Creation Actions, and use Open in Edit tab for the full Editor. To work with an outside image, open the Edit page and upload it or paste an image URL. The web documentation lists a 10 MB maximum upload size, so a large photograph may need resizing or compression first. See the Editor guide and web creation guide for current interface details.
A repeatable workflow for personalized images
- Define the visual direction. Decide whether the goal is a mood, palette, genre, campaign look, or treatment—not merely “make it on brand.” A Personalization profile captures preferences, not approved logos, typefaces, or product specifications.
- Choose or create a profile for that task. Keep distinct visual directions in separate profiles instead of asking one profile to serve every project.
- Generate a base image. Make the prompt specific about subject and composition, then add the profile parameter. For example:
editorial portrait of a ceramic artist in a sunlit studio, warm natural light, muted earth tones, realistic hands, clean magazine composition --p pID --stylize 150. ReplacepIDwith your own profile ID. - Add a reference only when it solves a separate problem. Use an image prompt for content or composition cues, a Style Reference for a look, or an available subject-reference feature when the model supports it. A style profile alone will not preserve a person or product.
- Open the strongest result in the Editor. Make a targeted repaint or expand the framing instead of regenerating the whole image when the composition is already working.
- Compare and inspect. Try a lower stylize value if the profile overrules the brief. Examine the whole image for changes to faces, hands, lighting, perspective, textures, and nearby objects.
- Keep a production record. Save the prompt, profile ID, model version, aspect ratio, and source image. This improves repeatability, although it cannot make a generative result deterministic.
For a creator, this can help develop a consistent visual voice across unrelated images. For a brand team, it can speed up concept exploration and produce stylistically related campaign options. For a portrait or product scene, the Editor can help explore framing or local changes, but consequential identity and product details should be checked and corrected in a conventional editing workflow.

Model versions matter—especially when editing
As of September 23, 2026, Midjourney’s version documentation says V7 was released on April 3, 2025, and served as the default from June 17, 2025 through June 9, 2026. V8.1, released April 30, 2026, became the default on June 10, 2026. The version table lists Personalization for V6, V7, and V8.1/V8.2, but it also lists the Editor as using V6.1 functionality in relevant newer-model workflows. Pan and Zoom Out are likewise listed as using V6.1 in those columns.

That means a newer-model source image does not necessarily receive newer-model editing behavior. The edit may respond differently in detail or consistency from the original generation. Test on a copy, compare it with the source, and record which model was used for each step. Midjourney’s version documentation is the best place to check changing compatibility.
Where Midjourney fits—and where it does not
Midjourney is a strong starting point when the priority is visual exploration: concept art, editorial imagery, moodboards, stylized campaigns, social content, or developing a preferred aesthetic. Profiles and iterative edits make it easier to keep exploring within a visual direction without treating every image as a one-shot prompt.

It is a weaker fit when the deliverable depends on exact product geometry, reliable logos and typography, strict color management, fixed templates, pixel-level retouching, or the same person or object remaining identical across a large asset library. It is also not a customer-data personalization platform: it does not turn audience segments into approved, automatically generated assets. For production, review all output and move it into a conventional design or editing tool when precise layout, masking, typography, or cleanup is required.
Adobe Firefly and Photoshop are often a more natural starting point when the task is generative editing inside a broader professional design workflow, especially if the team already uses Adobe tools. Midjourney is often better suited to distinctive aesthetic exploration and preference-led image generation. A practical team may use Midjourney to find a creative direction and Photoshop or Firefly for controlled cleanup and delivery; neither choice removes the need to review the final asset.
Plans, privacy, and commercial use
Midjourney’s plan comparison, checked August 18, 2026, listed Basic at $10 per month, Standard at $30, Pro at $60, and Mega at $120. Annual billing was listed at a 20% discount when paid upfront. Standard, Pro, and Mega include unlimited image generation in Relax Mode; Basic does not. Stealth Mode is listed only for Pro and Mega. Plan features and prices can change, so confirm them on the current plan comparison before subscribing.

Midjourney’s plan page says subscribers may generally use images commercially, but it also says companies with more than $1 million in annual gross revenue must purchase Pro or Mega. This is not a universal guarantee that every output is safe to use: check the current Terms of Service, applicable law, rights in uploaded material, and the requirements of the specific campaign. If you are working with unreleased products, private client material, or identifiable people, check privacy terms before uploading; Stealth Mode is not available on Basic or Standard.
Is Midjourney changing image personalization?
Yes, in a specific sense: it is combining preference-informed generation with an editable image loop. A profile can give work a recognizable aesthetic, references can provide additional guidance, and the Editor can extend or alter an existing image. Together, these tools make personalization more approachable for creative exploration—but they do not guarantee a consistent identity, exact brand compliance, or production-ready precision. Treat Midjourney as a generative creative partner, and use controlled editing tools for the details that must not drift.
