Greener kitchen design is not achieved by swapping in recycled plastic and stopping there. In an interview published in Electrolux Group’s Sustainability eBook 2023, Monica Mazioun, then the group’s Design Lead for Sustainability with a regional remit across Asia-Pacific, argues for a lifecycle approach: reduce material impacts, cut energy and water use during operation, and make products useful and recoverable at end of life. Her examples—from recycled refrigerator liners to modular kitchens and a renewable-hydrogen cooktop prototype—show how designers can turn that principle into specifications.

The interview is a record of what Mazioun and Electrolux described in 2023, not a current product catalogue or independent audit. Project status, corporate figures and regional availability should therefore be read with their dates and attribution attached.

What a lifecycle approach changes in appliance design

Mazioun’s central instruction is to identify the point in a product’s life where an intervention can have the greatest effect. “From a sustainability point of view, it’s about looking at the product holistically, and considering where we can have the highest impact,” she says in the 2023 interview.

That means assessing three connected stages:

  • Material sourcing and manufacture: What resources go into the appliance, and can recycled or lower-impact inputs replace virgin material without weakening it?
  • Use: How much electricity and water does the appliance consume over years of cooking, washing or cooling? Can controls and feedback make efficient operation the easy choice?
  • End of life: Can components be repaired, refurbished, reused or separated for recycling instead of becoming waste?

A material improvement that shortens service life can shift impacts rather than reduce them. Conversely, a highly durable appliance that consumes excessive energy can carry a large operational burden. The design question is therefore not “How much recycled content does it contain?” but “What combination of material, performance, longevity and recovery produces the lowest total impact for this use?”

Recycled refrigerator plastic: the quality test matters

HIPS liners in the interview

Mazioun describes collaboration with suppliers to increase recycled high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) in refrigerator liners. She says the approach had launched in Europe and that extending it to Asia-Pacific, particularly Australia, was part of her work at the time. The liner is an important example because it shows a component-level material intervention rather than a claim that an entire refrigerator is recycled.

Her qualification is decisive: recycled content must not compromise product quality or longevity. “Otherwise, it’s not a sustainable solution,” she says. A recycled resin that cracks, deforms or fails to protect the cabinet could require an early replacement, erasing the benefit of the original material saving.

How to evaluate a recycled-content claim

Architects and specifiers should request the percentage, the material covered, and the evidence behind the claim. “Recycled plastic” could refer to factory scrap, post-consumer material, one small component or an entire housing; those are not equivalent. Ask for documentation that identifies the resin, its source, quality controls and whether performance testing matches the virgin-material version.

The interview also mentions a vacuum using up to 70% recycled plastic. Electrolux’s 2023 ebook does not identify a model, market, calculation method or current specification, so the figure should not be transferred to a particular product without documentation.

Why the use phase can outweigh the material story

Electrolux’s reported 85% finding

Electrolux says its own lifecycle assessment found that approximately 85% of its products’ environmental impact occurred during use. This is a company-reported assessment in the 2023 ebook, not a universal statistic for every appliance, technology or household. It nevertheless explains why Mazioun places so much emphasis on operating behavior and efficiency.

Her practical recommendation is straightforward: specify appliances with high energy and water ratings. She also describes washing-machine sensors that monitor conditions and adjust cycle duration. Such controls can reduce unnecessary operation, but the actual result depends on the appliance, programme, load and local rating system.

Why an ECO programme may take longer

Mazioun says Electrolux encouraged customers to select ECO programmes even when they ran longer. A longer cycle can use lower temperatures, less heating power or more controlled water management; elapsed time alone does not reveal energy consumption. The relevant comparison is the programme’s rated electricity and water use for the same load, not whether the display reaches zero sooner.

For a project specification, record the rating label, the test cycle used to produce it and any installation assumptions. In a handover guide, explain which ECO setting to select and when a shorter intensive cycle is genuinely necessary. User education matters because an efficient programme cannot deliver its intended result if occupants routinely override it.

Lifecycle stage Design question Evidence in the interview Practical specification response
Materials Can recycled input replace virgin material without reducing service life? Recycled HIPS refrigerator liners; quality and longevity caveat Request resin percentage, source and durability documentation
Use What happens over thousands of operating cycles? Electrolux reports approximately 85% of impact in use; ECO programmes and sensors are highlighted Compare certified energy and water ratings and explain efficient settings to users
End of life Can the appliance be repaired, reused or recovered? Mazioun says recycled content is insufficient if the product cannot be recovered Ask about repair support, parts, take-back and material separation before purchase

End-of-life design and circular business models

Mazioun argues that a product should not be called sustainable simply because it contains recycled material. If it cannot be recovered and used again at the end of its life, the material benefit is incomplete. That principle puts serviceability and recovery on the same checklist as recycled content.

The adjoining sustainability material in the ebook discusses appliance-as-a-service, repair and take-back as business models Electrolux was considering to support refurbishment, reuse and less waste. The wording describes directions under consideration in that publication; it does not establish that every market currently offers a subscription, repair network or take-back service.

Questions for a project team

  • Who owns the appliance at the end of its service period, and who is responsible for collection?
  • Are replacement parts available for a defined period, and can an authorized technician access service information?
  • Can the cabinet, electronics and polymers be separated by a recycler in the installation region?
  • What happens to units removed during a renovation: resale, refurbishment, parts harvesting or disposal?

Document the answers in the project’s operations manual. A take-back promise without a collection route, eligibility rules and geographic coverage is not a complete end-of-life plan.

How architects can choose lower-impact kitchen appliances

Mazioun’s advice to specify high energy and water ratings is the starting point, not the whole decision. A robust schedule should capture comparable information for every shortlisted appliance.

Criterion What to record Why it matters
Energy performance Regional label, annual consumption or test-cycle consumption, and rating date Allows like-for-like comparison under the applicable standard
Water performance Water use per cycle or programme and the tested load Prevents a low-energy claim from hiding high water demand
Capacity and fit Usable volume, dimensions, ventilation clearances and expected load pattern An oversized or poorly installed appliance can waste resources
Durability Warranty terms, expected service information and documented reliability evidence Longer service can avoid replacement impacts
Repairability Parts availability, service network and access to repair documentation Supports continued use instead of premature disposal
Material disclosure Recycled-content percentage by component and verification method Separates specific evidence from broad marketing language
End of life Take-back eligibility, collection geography and recycling instructions Tests whether recovery is practical for the installed location

Do not rank one model as “the greenest” unless the same boundary, test method and service assumptions apply to all models. The interview supplies no competing-product comparison, model-level refrigerator data or current market ranking.

GRO: a modular kitchen built around changing needs

GRO was presented as a modular kitchen concept launched at EuroCucina in Milan. Its components could be added or removed as a household’s needs changed. That flexibility addresses a common source of waste: replacing an entire fitted kitchen because one life stage, room layout or dietary routine has changed.

The concept also sought to encourage healthier eating and reduce food waste, drawing on the EAT-Lancet planetary health diet. In the interview, Mazioun calls GRO “definitely our North Star in terms of product innovation.” That is a statement about the concept’s strategic ambition, not evidence that GRO became a generally available retail kitchen.

What the concept suggests for real projects

A modular brief can separate durable infrastructure from replaceable equipment. Designers can plan service access, allow components to be upgraded independently and avoid locking every future change to demolition. Those are design implications of the concept; they should still be tested against local manufacturing, maintenance and cost constraints rather than assumed to exist in a particular product.

HyHome and the renewable-hydrogen cooking prototype

The interview describes HyHome, a partnership with AGIG exploring hydrogen gas in kitchen appliances. Mazioun says renewable hydrogen could provide a gas-like cooking experience while producing zero greenhouse gases at the point of combustion. The qualification is essential: the hydrogen must come from a renewable source, and “zero at the point of combustion” does not describe emissions from producing, compressing, transporting or delivering the fuel.

  • Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.

The ebook separately identifies the UltimateTaste 900 Hydrogen Gas cooktop as a prototype. It should therefore be treated as demonstration and development work, not as a standard retail specification. Availability, code compliance, fuel supply, ventilation, burner conversion and safety requirements would all need confirmation from current technical documentation and local authorities before any project could rely on hydrogen cooking.

Questions a designer should resolve

  • Is renewable hydrogen actually supplied to the project location, at the required pressure and continuity?
  • Which building, fire and gas regulations govern the installation?
  • How are combustion products, leakage detection and emergency shutoff handled?
  • What is the full lifecycle impact of the hydrogen pathway compared with electric induction or other available options?

The concept is valuable as a prompt to examine fuel assumptions, but a prototype announcement cannot answer those project-specific questions.

How to read the headline figures from the 2023 ebook

Electrolux’s sustainability ebook reports several figures that help explain the company’s stated priorities. They are company-authored disclosures, not independent validation of performance.

Reported figure Scope and date How to interpret it
Approximately 85% Electrolux’s reported share of product environmental impact occurring during use; published in 2023 A company lifecycle-assessment result, not a universal appliance rule
Up to 70% recycled plastic One vacuum mentioned in the 2023 ebook; model not identified Cannot be assigned to a current model without separate documentation
24% of units sold and 39% of gross profit Electrolux Group’s most energy- and water-efficient products in 2022 A reported 2022 sales and profit mix, not a product-level efficiency comparison
82% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions; more than 25% in Scope 3 Compared with 2015, as reported in the 2023 ebook toward the company’s 2025 science-based climate target Corporate progress claims with the stated baseline and boundary
More than 124,000 people engaged Electrolux Food Foundation engagement since 2016, reported in 2023 An engagement total, not a measure of appliance lifecycle performance

Keeping the date and attribution attached prevents these numbers from being mistaken for current 2026 status or independently verified sector benchmarks. The interview records what was reported at publication time.

A practical workflow for a lower-impact kitchen specification

  1. Set the use case. Record household size, cooking frequency, washing loads, refrigerator capacity and expected occupancy changes. Efficiency data is meaningful only for a realistic duty cycle.
  2. Collect standardized ratings. Save the regional energy and water labels, test programmes, annual assumptions and revision dates for each candidate.
  3. Request material evidence. Ask whether recycled content is post-consumer or pre-consumer, which components contain it, and what testing demonstrates equivalent quality and longevity.
  4. Check serviceability. Obtain warranty length, parts-availability periods, service contacts and repair procedures for the installation region.
  5. Map the end-of-life route. Confirm who collects the appliance, where it goes and which components can be refurbished or recycled. Put those responsibilities in the handover documents.
  6. Design the user guidance. Explain ECO programmes, loading, temperature choices and maintenance. A technically efficient appliance still depends on daily operation.
  7. Revisit the specification at procurement. Models, labels and availability can change between concept design and installation; verify the final serialised products rather than relying on an early brochure.

What Mazioun’s ideas mean for sustainable kitchen design

The interview’s strongest lesson is methodological. Recycled HIPS, sensor-controlled cycles, modular furniture and hydrogen cooking are different interventions, but each is judged against the same lifecycle questions: does it reduce resource demand, preserve useful life and leave a credible recovery path?

For architects, that means writing measurable requirements instead of accepting a single green attribute. For clients, it means asking how an appliance performs over its entire service period, not only what material appears on its specification sheet. And for manufacturers, the concepts point toward products that can adapt, be repaired and eventually return to productive use.

GRO and HyHome remain concept and prototype examples in the 2023 publication. Their value is as a design direction: kitchens can be planned around changing needs, healthier consumption and lower waste, provided each promised benefit is verified for the actual product, fuel, market and date.
