In the United States, a bathroom remodel can cost several thousand dollars or well over $70,000, depending on what changes. The latest Houzz survey reports a $15,000 median for bathroom upgrades completed in 2025 and a $25,000 median for major remodels (projects that upgraded at least the shower). Angi’s 2026 professional estimate is $6,651–$17,660. Those figures are useful reference points, not interchangeable promises: they come from different methods and scopes. Your reliable budget comes from an itemized estimate covering demolition, trades, materials, permits and a reserve for concealed problems.
Bathroom remodel cost benchmarks for 2026
Start with benchmarks, then replace them with prices for your room and scope. The 2026 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study surveyed 1,619 Houzz homeowners with recent or planned bathroom renovations. Its spending results describe projects completed in 2025:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Project or room type | Reported figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom upgrade | $15,000 median | Middle spending value for surveyed U.S. upgrades in 2025. |
| Major bathroom remodel | $25,000 median | Houzz classifies a project as major when at least the shower was upgraded. |
| Top 10% of major remodels | $70,000 or more | Upper-end spending threshold among those major projects. |
| Bathroom 100 square feet or larger | $30,000 median | Median spending for this room-size group. |
| Top 10% of bathrooms 100 square feet or larger | $75,000 or more | Upper-end threshold for that larger-room group. |
These are survey medians and thresholds, not national averages or guaranteed quotes. A second reference point comes from Angi’s guide, updated July 9, 2026, which estimates a professionally completed bathroom remodel at $6,651–$17,660. Angi and Houzz measure different populations and scopes, so do not average the numbers or treat one as a correction of the other. Use each as context while your contractor prices the actual work.
Budget pressure is common. The 2026 U.S. Houzz & Home Study found that 37% of surveyed homeowners exceeded their initial renovation budget for 2025 projects. The same study covers 20,358 users, including 10,176 renovating U.S. homeowners. That statistic describes survey experience; it does not predict your overrun, but it supports keeping money available for scope changes and concealed conditions.

Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
- FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. - TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
Professional labor is also the norm in the survey population: 89% of homeowners in the bathroom trends study hired at least one professional. That does not make professional work mandatory for every task, but it is a realistic assumption when planning plumbing, electrical, waterproofing and code-sensitive work.
What actually determines your total
Two bathrooms with similar dimensions can have very different prices because the work behind the finishes is different. Define these variables before asking for bids:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Scope: A cosmetic refresh of paint, hardware and accessories is not the same project as replacing a shower, tub, floor, vanity and wiring.
- Layout: Keeping the toilet, sink and shower in their existing locations usually avoids the additional supply, drain and electrical changes that accompany a floor-plan change.
- Finish level: Tile, stone, plumbing fixtures, cabinets, glass and lighting have wide material ranges. A premium allowance can move the total quickly.
- Room size and tiled area: A larger room may require more flooring, wall tile, waterproofing, trim and labor. The Houzz $30,000 median applies specifically to bathrooms at least 100 square feet.
- Building condition: Water damage, outdated wiring, failed plumbing or hazardous materials may be hidden until demolition.
- Local requirements: Permit rules, inspection fees, labor rates and disposal arrangements vary by jurisdiction.
Build an itemized bathroom remodel budget
Ask for every category below to appear as a line item. An allowance should state the amount, quantity, model or finish assumptions, tax and delivery treatment. “Bathroom remodel: $X” is not detailed enough to compare contractors.

| Budget category | Known 2026 guide figures or questions to price | What to verify in the proposal |
|---|---|---|
| Design, planning and site protection | Angi identifies design and site conditions as cost drivers but does not provide one universal design fee. | Confirm whether layout drawings, selections assistance, protection of adjacent rooms and setup are included. |
| Demolition and disposal | Angi estimates demolition at $1,000–$2,300. Hauling and disposal may be separate. | List what is removed, who hauls debris, dump fees, and whether salvage is expected. |
| Labor and coordination | For small bathroom remodels, Angi reports labor commonly represents 40%–60% of the budget. | Ask whether that labor covers each trade, supervision, overhead, cleanup and return visits. |
| Plumbing | Angi’s small-bathroom guide gives sample plumbing costs of $1,000–$2,000. | Separate fixture replacement in place from moving supply or drain lines; identify shutoff, vent and access work. |
| Electrical | Angi’s small-bathroom guide lists electrical labor at $50–$100 per hour. | Specify circuits, outlets, switches, GFCI protection, wiring changes, inspection and fixture installation. |
| Waterproofing, tile and flooring | Angi lists flooring installation at an average $12.50 per square foot and midrange bathroom retiling at $10–$50 per square foot including labor. | State whether prices include substrate preparation, waterproof membrane, demolition, edge trim, grout and the exact square footage. |
| Fixtures and finish materials | Break out vanity and countertop, sink, faucet, toilet, shower or tub, enclosure, lighting, mirror, hardware and paint. Angi reports wide material ranges rather than one universal package price. | Record model numbers or allowances, quantities, finish, tax, delivery, storage and who purchases each item. |
| Ventilation and lighting | Angi gives example vent-installation prices of $400 for a vent with light and $130 for a wall-mounted vent. Light-fixture installation is listed at $200–$600. | Check duct route, exterior termination, electrical capacity, ceiling access and whether patching is included. |
| Permits and inspections | Angi’s guides show broad permit ranges of $100–$1,000; one section of the small-bathroom guide describes a $150–$1,000 planning range. | Have the local building department or contractor confirm whether your scope needs permits, who pulls them and who schedules inspections. |
| Concealed repairs and contingency | Angi discusses possible water-damage repair and asbestos-removal costs but does not establish one universal reserve. | Ask how discoveries are documented, what hourly or unit rates apply, and how change orders are approved. |
| Temporary arrangements and closeout | No universal amount is established for cleanup, final debris hauling, taxes, delivery or a temporary bathroom. | Write each inclusion or exclusion into the contract so it is not assumed to be free. |
How scope changes move the budget
Cosmetic refresh
A refresh might retain the existing shower, tub, toilet and plumbing locations while changing paint, mirror, lighting, hardware or a vanity. It avoids much of the demolition and waterproofing associated with a shower replacement, but the exact price still depends on material allowances, electrical work and the condition found behind existing finishes. Describe the retained components explicitly so a bid does not silently include replacement you do not want.
Fixture replacement in the existing layout
Replacing a toilet, faucet, vanity or shower fixture in place can be less disruptive than moving drains and supplies. Confirm that the new products fit existing rough-in dimensions and that the estimate includes shutoff replacement, wall opening and patching if needed. A low headline price can omit those enabling tasks.
Major remodel with a shower upgrade
For Houzz’s definition, upgrading at least the shower makes the project major. Waterproofing, backer preparation, tile, niches, glass, valves, drains and possible framing or plumbing repairs make this scope materially different from a cosmetic update. The Houzz median for this category was $25,000 in 2025, while the top 10% reached $70,000 or more.

Layout or footprint change
Moving a toilet, shower or sink can require new supply and drain routes, vent changes, electrical relocation, floor repair and additional permitting. Angi specifically notes that a floor-plan change can add plumbing and electrical expense. Price the desired layout against a version that keeps fixtures in place; the comparison shows what the move itself costs.
Larger bathroom
For bathrooms of at least 100 square feet, Houzz reports a $30,000 median and a top-10% threshold of $75,000 or more for 2025 projects. Use those figures only for that size group, not as a square-foot multiplier for every room.
A practical process for setting your budget
- Write the scope in verbs. State “replace shower waterproofing and tile,” “paint ceiling,” or “move toilet 18 inches,” rather than “full remodel.” Include what stays.
- Measure and photograph the room. Record floor area, wall lengths, ceiling height, door swings, window locations, existing drain positions and the access route. These details let contractors identify preparation and protection work.
- Select a finish level and allowances. Choose a realistic tile, fixture, vanity and lighting allowance before bids. If selections are undecided, require a written allowance and a formula for credits or increases.
- Request itemized proposals. Get demolition, disposal, labor by trade, materials, permits, inspections, protection, cleanup and taxes separated. Ask for quantities and model assumptions.
- Verify code and permits locally. Contact the building department before signing. National ranges cannot tell you whether your jurisdiction requires a permit for a fixture swap, electrical change, structural work or a layout revision.
- Set a change-order rule. Require written descriptions, prices and approval before extra work starts, except for urgent measures needed to protect the property.
- Hold a reserve. The 37% Houzz over-budget figure shows why the starting estimate should not consume every dollar available. Set aside funds for concealed damage and choices you may change, without labeling the reserve as a guaranteed percentage unsupported by the available cost guides.
How to compare contractor bids fairly
Put proposals into a side-by-side worksheet and normalize the scope before choosing the lowest total. Compare:

Hidden conditions and common budget traps
Water damage behind the surface
Leaks around a shower, tub or toilet can damage framing and subflooring. Ask how the contractor will document affected areas after demolition and whether drying, structural repair, antimicrobial treatment or replacement subfloor is included. Do not assume a tile allowance covers rebuilding the substrate.
Old wiring or inadequate circuits
A new light, fan, heated feature or outlet may expose capacity or grounding issues. Angi’s $50–$100-per-hour electrical figure is a small-bathroom guide example, not a guaranteed local rate. Require the electrician’s scope and inspection responsibility in writing.

Hazardous materials in older buildings
Angi identifies asbestos-removal costs as a possible additional expense. Testing and specialist removal depend on the building and material; do not assume asbestos is present or absent without appropriate local evaluation. Ask whether demolition stops if suspect material is found.
Allowance shock
An unrealistically small tile or fixture allowance makes the initial total look attractive and turns selections into change orders. Select products before signing where possible. Otherwise, request several allowance examples and the exact credit or extra-cost calculation.
Permit and closeout omissions
A permit fee can be modest compared with the project, but unpermitted work can create inspection and resale complications. Confirm the permit number, inspection stages and final sign-off process, plus who pays for corrections.
When a bathroom remodel is financially sensible
Use the budget to decide what problem you are solving. Repairing a leak or failed waterproofing is different from buying premium finishes. Compare alternatives by durability, maintenance and compatibility with the existing room, not purchase price alone. The available cost data does not establish a universal resale return or payback period, so avoid treating a remodel as a guaranteed investment.
If the full wish list exceeds your limit, preserve safety and water management first, then phase appearance upgrades. For example, complete plumbing repairs, ventilation, waterproofing and code-required electrical work before postponing a decorative mirror or premium hardware. Have the contractor confirm that a future phase will not require tearing out completed work.
Questions to ask before signing
- Which exact fixtures and surfaces are included, and what remains untouched?
- Are demolition, haul-away, permits, inspections, taxes, delivery and final cleaning included?
- What labor is performed by your team and what is subcontracted?
- What waterproofing method and flood or leak checks are specified?
- What happens if framing, wiring, plumbing or water damage is discovered?
- How are allowances converted into credits or change orders?
- Who purchases, receives and stores owner-selected materials?
- What is the process and markup for approved changes?
- What warranty applies to labor and supplied products?
Bottom line
For U.S. planning, use $15,000 as the latest Houzz median for a bathroom upgrade and $25,000 as its 2025 median for a major remodel with a shower upgrade. Angi’s $6,651–$17,660 estimate is a separate professional-cost reference, not a competing national truth. Build your own number from scope, layout, labor, materials, permits and concealed-condition risk; then compare itemized bids line by line. That method is more dependable than multiplying a generic square-foot figure or choosing the smallest headline quote.
