Natalie Bradburn’s bathroom practice began with a small but persistent failure of everyday storage: dust, toothpaste residue and moisture gathered in the ceramic cup holding her toothbrushes. Her solution was a shelf that separated the brushes, allowed the area to drain and made the object worth looking at. That fix became the starting point for a wider design argument: a modern bathroom does not have to be white, anonymous or clinically detached from the people who use it.

The dirty toothbrush cup that started the investigation
Bradburn’s first bathroom product was not conceived as a commercial launch. She noticed that the familiar ceramic cup created exactly the conditions a toothbrush holder should prevent: residue collected around the base, moisture lingered after use and dust settled into a container that was awkward to clean. The brushes also sat together instead of drying independently.
Her first response was practical. A shelf with individual slots could keep toothbrushes apart, lift them away from the wet basin area and leave the supporting surface easier to wipe. Bradburn told Broadsheet, “I didn’t really mean to develop it as a product for sale, I just wanted to resolve it for myself.” The domestic annoyance became a design brief because it exposed several questions at once: how an object drains, how it is cleaned, how it occupies a small wall, and whether a necessary fitting can contribute to the room visually.
That way of working is important to understanding the studio. The product is not a decorative answer added after a bathroom has been planned. It begins with a repeated action—brushing teeth, showering, drying hands or changing a toilet roll—and asks what the object makes easier or more unpleasant.

From CLEANCLEANCLEAN to Natalie Bradburn Studio
The former CLEANCLEANCLEAN practice became Natalie Bradburn Studio, which describes the current Wellington operation as a combination of Bradburn’s architecture and product-design background applied to bespoke interiors. The name change matters because the work now reads as a broader practice rather than a single line of bathroom accessories, while the original concern remains: ordinary objects can shape how a room feels and functions.
In an Azure profile published October 16, 2024, Bradburn explained that she directed “any essay I could toward the topic, dissecting every aspect of the space and the politics around it.” Her interest is not limited to finishes or fixtures. Bathrooms are intimate, heavily used rooms that are often treated as technically solved once plumbing, waterproofing and ventilation are arranged. Bradburn’s work gives the small, repeated encounters inside that room equal design attention.
She also describes a cultural imbalance in architecture and interiors: “There was so much richness there, and I felt like it had been generally overlooked in favour of grander ideas and architectures.” A toothbrush shelf may be physically modest, but it belongs to that overlooked layer of the built environment. It is touched every day, seen at close range and judged by whether it deals with water, dirt and clutter.

A profile can establish that these kinds of objects were made without establishing today’s colour cards, dimensions, stock, price, shipping or installation instructions. Anyone specifying a piece should confirm those details with the studio before ordering.
Why colour is a functional argument, not just a finish
Bradburn challenges the assumption that “clean” means white. In the Azure interview, she argues that colourful bathrooms are cleaner because you can actually see the dirt. That is her design opinion and a way of describing visual awareness, not a scientifically established cleaning result. A coloured surface may make splashes, dust or toothpaste marks more noticeable to one person and less noticeable to another, depending on hue, sheen, lighting and the surrounding materials.
The stronger point is behavioural. If a fitting is easy to notice, easy to reach and easy to wipe, it can make maintenance part of the room’s normal rhythm rather than an invisible chore. Colour gives the fixture a clear visual presence, while the shelf, slot or perforation supplies the practical response to water and clutter. The emotional effect matters too: a room used several times a day can feel personal instead of institutional when its accessories reflect the occupants’ taste.
Broadsheet quotes Bradburn saying, “About eight out of 10 bathrooms are white… There’s no personality.” That figure is her reported impression, not a verified survey statistic. It nevertheless captures the convention she is pushing against: white walls, white tile and white fittings are often selected as a shorthand for hygiene and timelessness, even when the result feels generic.

The cited profiles describe powder-coated aluminium fixtures. Aluminium keeps the fittings relatively light, while powder coating supplies the coloured surface and a consistent finish across a group of objects. The coating is part of the design language, not an applied graphic: it covers the hardware so the shelf, hook or holder reads as one deliberate form.

Bradburn also emphasizes local fabrication. “I love working with local manufacturers to share knowledge and experience,” she told Azure. Local production can make communication about a bend, slot, edge or finish more direct, and it allows a designer to refine a small object with the people who make it. It does not, by itself, prove a particular lead time, price or environmental outcome; those depend on the maker, material supply and order.
Customization is another part of the practice. Homestyle quotes Bradburn: “I can recoat an object in another colour if the interior context around it changes.” Recoating means a fitting can be treated as a durable component of an interior rather than a disposable trend purchase. It still requires confirmation of whether a specific item can be recoated, how it must be prepared, what finish is available and who performs the work.
How to bring colour into a bathroom without making it chaotic
You do not need to turn every surface into a saturated statement. Bradburn’s approach works because colour is assigned to the objects and planes people actually encounter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart with the room’s fixed conditions
Record the existing tile, grout, stone, timber, tapware and lighting before choosing a colour. A sample that looks calm beside a cool white wall can become muddy beside cream tile or warm timber. Check it in daylight and under the bathroom’s evening lighting. The goal is not to find a universally correct colour; it is to see how the chosen finish behaves in this room.
Choose one functional group first
A toothbrush shelf, shower shelf or set of towel hooks can establish the palette without requiring demolition. Repeating one colour at the basin and shower makes the choice intentional. If you prefer contrast, keep the number of accent colours limited and let the room’s existing materials provide the quieter tones.
Use scale to control intensity
A small shelf can carry a vivid colour with little visual weight. A large shower shelf or basin has more presence and may need a less aggressive hue, a softer contrast or more breathing room around it. Consider the sightline from the doorway as well as the close-up view while brushing teeth or showering.

Let maintenance shape the decision
Colour cannot compensate for poor drainage or an inaccessible surface. Select forms that keep water moving, leave enough room to wipe behind and below the fitting, and do not force toiletries into a permanently wet corner. The colour should make the useful object easier to live with, not distract from how it performs.
Replacing a toothbrush cup: what to look for
Bradburn’s originating problem offers a practical checklist for anyone searching for a toothbrush shelf or another holder. The exact dimensions and attachment details vary by maker, so measure the wall and confirm the current specification before purchase.
- Separation: Slots or individual positions keep brushes from leaning into one another and reduce contact between handles.
- Drainage: Openings or a sloped surface give water somewhere to go instead of leaving a shallow puddle beneath the bristles.
- Cleaning access: The shelf should be removable or exposed enough that toothpaste residue can be wiped without dismantling surrounding fittings.
- Clearance: Check the distance from the basin, mirror, splash zone and electrical outlets. A holder that projects into a regular elbow path will become an annoyance.
- Mounting: Confirm whether the item is designed for screws, adhesive or another fixing method, and whether that method suits tile, plasterboard or masonry.
- Ventilation: A shelf can improve separation and drainage, but it does not sterilize a toothbrush. Rinse the brush, shake off excess water and allow it to air-dry according to ordinary dental-hygiene guidance.
This is where the product’s modest scale becomes an advantage. A shelf can solve the cup problem while preserving counter space and adding a measured hit of colour around the mirror.
Choosing between bathroom shelves, hooks and racks
Think in zones rather than shopping for a matching set automatically.
Basin zone
The toothbrush shelf belongs where it can be reached without crossing the sink, while still avoiding the most direct splash path. A compact form is usually more useful here than a deep ledge that invites bottles and turns into another clutter shelf.

The reported shower shelf uses a perforated drainage area. That detail addresses the central shower problem: products sit in a continuously wet environment, and a solid, poorly drained surface holds water around their bases. Check the shelf’s load guidance, edge treatment and fixing requirements with the maker before installation.

Towel zone
Hooks suit people who prefer quick hanging and minimal visual bulk; racks can provide more separation and surface area. Place them where a towel can spread rather than bunch against a wall or door. The number of users, towel size and ventilation matter more than simply matching the colour of another fitting.
Toilet zone
A toilet-roll holder should be positioned for reach from the seated position without colliding with cabinetry or a nearby towel. Its colour can coordinate with the basin and shower fittings, but the placement should be decided by use first.
Making a modern bathroom feel less clinical
Bradburn’s advice is direct: “So make yourself feel comfortable and make it reflect who you are, not what you can buy at Mitre 10. Oh, and bring in some colour.” The point is not to reject practical products or a hardware store entirely. It is to avoid letting a standardised shopping list determine the room’s personality.
Comfort can come from a warmer light source, a timber stool, art that tolerates humidity, a textile with a considered colour or a basin fitting that feels pleasant to touch. The accessories should support those choices rather than compete with them. A coloured shelf beside a neutral tile may be enough to shift the room from generic to individual; a stronger scheme can use the same hue on several small fixtures to create a visual thread.
For renters or anyone avoiding major work, replaceable accessories are the lowest-risk starting point. Measure existing holes before drilling, check whether an adhesive system is approved for the surface and keep the original hardware if a fitting must be removed later. For a renovation, decide the positions of shelves and hooks during the layout stage so waterproofing, studs, plumbing and clearances are resolved before the final finish.
What is established—and what still needs checking
The published profiles establish Bradburn’s origin story, the former product categories, the use of powder-coated aluminium, local fabrication, customization and her argument for expressive colour. They do not establish a current retail catalogue, universal availability, prices, shipping terms, installation manuals or a scientific link between colour and cleaning frequency.
Azure’s feature appeared on October 16, 2024, while Broadsheet’s article was published March 16, 2023 and updated March 28, 2023. Historical prices and shipping mentioned in older coverage should not be treated as current. The official Natalie Bradburn Studio description confirms the current practice name and its relationship to CLEANCLEANCLEAN, but a prospective customer still needs to ask about today’s inventory, lead times, finish options, dimensions and service area.
The larger design lesson
Natalie Bradburn’s bathroom work makes a persuasive case for taking minor domestic frustrations seriously. The dirty toothbrush cup was not a grand architectural problem, yet it revealed how storage, moisture, cleaning and visual identity meet in one small object. Solving that problem led to a family of fittings and to a broader practice in which colour carries emotional and practical meaning.
The result is not a rule that every bathroom should be bright, nor proof that white bathrooms are inherently wrong. It is an invitation to make deliberate choices. Start with what is wet, touched and cleaned every day; choose a form that improves that action; then use colour and material to make the improvement belong to the people who live with it.
