How Natural Tones Make This 625-Square-Foot Haussmannian Apartment Feel Complete

A 625-square-foot apartment behind Montmartre pairs restored Haussmannian details with cream-painted walls, antique parquet, concrete, metal, and collected furnishings. Its open circulation and carefully layered materials offer a practical model for planning a warm, cohesive paint palette.

A 625-square-foot, fourth-floor apartment behind Montmartre gains a calm, cohesive character by doing two things at once: restoring its Haussmannian details and simplifying the way people move through the rooms. Tonale’s renovation uses cream paint, antique parquet, several kinds of wood, waxed concrete, and restrained metal accents so that the compact home feels connected rather than crowded. The east-facing rooms receive soft morning light, and the main living area occupies about two-thirds of the apartment’s surface area.

The project is documented in Anouk Sarfati’s Architectural Digest feature published June 26, 2023. Its most useful lesson for anyone thinking about paint is not a particular color code. It is the way a quiet wall color can let original architecture, varied wood grain, textured textiles, and collected furniture share one visual language.

The apartment’s central idea: continuity without sameness

Architect and Tonale founder Antoine Lachaux described the brief as wanting “to create an apartment that wasn’t too cold… a warm place, with a pleasant atmosphere.” That goal explains why the rooms do not rely on a single material or a dramatic accent color. Instead, related warm neutrals connect surfaces while differences in sheen, grain, texture, and age keep the interior from becoming flat.

Lachaux also said, “From the street to the apartment’s interior, there’s a continuity of style,” linking the renovated rooms to the character of the Haussmannian building. The apartment is in a less tourist-focused area behind Montmartre, on the fourth floor, with four enfilade windows along the street-facing side. Those windows establish the long, linear sequence that the new plan makes easier to read.

  • COMPLETE 5-PIECE BRUSH SET FOR EVERY PAINTING TASK — Includes 1 Inch Flat, 1.5 Inch Angle, 2 Inch Flat, 2 Inch Angle Stubby, and 2.5 Inch Angle brush giving you every size professional painters use daily. Get all 5 for less than the price of a single brush from hardware store brands — professional grade performance at a fraction of the cost. Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.
  • ZERO BRISTLE LOSS — GUARANTEED BY PRECISION ADHESIVE BONDING — Every bristle is locked in place with precision-set adhesive that keeps them in the brush — not in your paint job. The coated steel ferrule provides structural support while the adhesive bond ensures clean performance on every stroke. Premium SRT synthetic filaments load more paint and release it evenly for a smooth streak-free finish on walls, ceilings, and trim. Works with latex, oil-based paint, primer, sealer, and wood stain.
  • INCLUDES THE ANGLE STUBBY MOST SETS LEAVE OUT — Professional painters know the 2 Inch Angle Stubby is the go-to brush for tight cabinet interiors, window sashes, inside corners, and detailed trim where standard angle brushes are too long. Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
  • FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Solid wood handles provide all-day comfort and control for both professional contractors and weekend DIY homeowners tackling interior or exterior painting projects.
  • TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

For a painting project, this is a useful distinction: continuity does not mean painting every surface the same way. Here, cream walls provide a visual field, while parquet, concrete, stainless steel, chrome or brushed metal, and vintage upholstery introduce controlled variation.

Why the 625-square-foot plan feels less compartmentalized

Circulation follows the street-facing rooms

The previous arrangement relied more heavily on corridors. The redesign removes that corridor emphasis and lets movement run along the street-facing rooms, linking the living room and bedroom through the enfilade. The article describes the principal living area as taking up two-thirds of the apartment’s total surface area. That proportion gives the home a clear public zone instead of dividing a small footprint into many narrow passages.

Lachaux framed the planning problem this way: “How can we ensure that each space functions as a single entity, without encroaching on the other rooms?” The answer is visible in the hierarchy. The living and dining spaces read as one generous sequence, the kitchen is nearby but recessed, and the bedroom and shower room form a more private progression.

The kitchen is present but not dominant

The kitchen sits in an alcove off the dining room. It remains convenient to reach, yet its position prevents cabinetry and appliances from taking over the principal living view. This is a spatial decision as much as a decorative one: the dining room remains the hinge between food preparation and the larger sitting area.

Privacy is created with sequence and concealment

The bedroom and shower room are set apart from the social rooms. Access to the shower room is concealed behind a dressing-room door, so the bathroom entry does not read as a prominent opening from the living areas. In a compact apartment, that small act of concealment preserves the visual calm of the main space without requiring a separate hallway.

Restoring period character instead of covering it

The renovation does not treat the existing Haussmannian details as obstacles. Missing moldings were restored, and the original fireplace was brought back into use. These interventions give the apartment historical weight while the new circulation updates how it functions.

Some original flooring had previously been tiled. It was replaced with antique parquet, allowing the floors to participate in the warm, continuous palette. Against cream-painted walls, the parquet supplies directional grain and a sense of age that a uniform new floor would not provide. The result is a contrast between a quiet painted backdrop and a visibly worked-in surface underfoot.

When restoring a period room, the project suggests a practical order of operations: first identify which architectural elements deserve repair or reinstatement, then choose paint and furnishings that support them. The molding and fireplace are not treated as decorative extras added after the color scheme; they help determine the scheme’s restraint.

How the natural-tone palette is assembled

The phrase “palette of natural tones” can sound vague, but the project is specific about where each material appears. The following summary separates documented locations from the visual role those choices play in the composition.

Element Documented location or treatment Visual contribution in the project
Cream paint Walls in several rooms A continuous, light-toned background that keeps attention on architecture and furnishings
Antique parquet Replacement flooring where some original flooring had been tiled Visible grain and patina that add warmth beneath the pale walls
Varnished wood Kitchen cabinet fronts A defined wood surface within the alcove, distinct from the painted walls
Waxed concrete Cream-colored kitchen floor; bathroom floor Mineral texture and tonal continuity across utilitarian surfaces
Polished concrete Kitchen worktop cast and polished on site by Atelier Trium A smooth, monolithic counter surface with subtle variation
Stainless steel Bathroom worktop and basin Reflective precision that balances the softer cream, wood, and tile
White earthenware tile Lightly textured bathroom walls Small-scale surface relief without introducing a strong new color
Chrome or brushed metal Details throughout the interior Fine highlights that sharpen the otherwise matte and tactile palette
Cotton and upcycled linen Custom dining-room curtains Layered white shades and textures that filter the incoming light

These are project details, not claims that one material performs better than another in every home. Their effect here comes from juxtaposition: wood brings grain, concrete brings mineral variation, metal catches light, and textiles soften the window wall.

What the paint is doing in each room

Living room: a calm field for collected pieces

The living room contains a Togo sofa, a Barcelona armchair, vintage Plona armchairs, a Panthella floor lamp, a green lacquer console by Joris Poggioli, Giuseppe Cormio sconces by Guzzini sourced via Modernariato, and a vintage Armani Casa vase. With that many silhouettes and periods in one room, the cream walls prevent the display from becoming visually noisy. They also allow the green console and the reflective lighting pieces to register as accents rather than compete with one another.

The wall color is therefore not the “feature” in the conventional sense. Its job is to make a varied collection legible. Restored moldings can remain visible because the surrounding paint does not create a hard, high-contrast frame around every profile.

Dining room: filtered light and tactile contrast

The dining area includes a large wooden table sourced by the architect, chairs associated with Thonet, Gascoin, and Jacober, and a Noguchi Akari 45A pendant. The curtains were custom-made by artisan Rémi Marilleau from different cotton fabrics and upcycled linens. Their white shades and varied textures filter the east-facing morning light rather than blocking it with a single heavy fabric.

For a similar effect, paint should be assessed beside the actual window textiles and floor at different times of day. The apartment’s soft morning light is part of why the pale surfaces read as warm and gentle; an identical paint sample can appear different under another orientation or electric-light plan.

Kitchen: wood and concrete inside a cream envelope

In the kitchen alcove, the cabinet fronts are varnished wood. The floor is cream-colored waxed concrete, and the beige concrete worktop was cast and polished on site by Atelier Trium. Because the alcove is visually contained, the wood can be richer than the walls without making the entire living area feel cabinetry-led.

The documented combination also shows why undertones matter. Cream paint, beige concrete, and varnished wood are close in temperature but not identical. Their distinctions come from gloss and texture as much as from hue, so a sample board should include the proposed wall color beside a cabinet finish and the countertop material.

Bedroom and shower room: quiet transition, precise details

The bedroom belongs to the more private sequence. In the shower room, the floor is waxed concrete, the walls are covered in lightly textured white earthenware tiles, and the worktop and basin are stainless steel. The concealed dressing-room door keeps this utilitarian room visually subordinate when viewed from the living areas.

Here the palette shifts from wood-forward comfort to a combination of pale mineral surfaces and metal. The white tile is textured rather than perfectly flat, while stainless steel introduces a controlled reflection. Neither requires a new accent color, so the transition from bedroom to bathroom remains part of the apartment’s overall continuity.

Why secondhand furniture suits the renovation

The feature says most of the furnishings are secondhand and identifies a mixture of antique, vintage, and contemporary pieces. That mix gives the restored architecture a lived-in counterpoint. A period apartment furnished only with reproductions could feel staged; a room filled only with modern objects could make the moldings and fireplace seem disconnected. The selected pieces bridge those conditions.

The named objects also demonstrate a useful editing principle. The Togo sofa and Barcelona armchair have strong, recognizable forms, while the vintage Plona armchairs, lacquer console, lamps, and vase add different decades and materials. Because the walls and floors remain restrained, the collection reads as layered rather than random.

If you are sourcing for a similar room, start with scale and circulation before shopping for icons. The apartment’s large living zone can accommodate several substantial pieces, but the success of the arrangement depends on preserving the open movement that replaced the corridor plan.

A practical way to translate the palette into a painting plan

The project is not a prescriptive paint formula, and no color codes or product specifications are supplied. You can still use its documented decisions as a disciplined sequence for your own renovation.

  1. Record the architecture before choosing color. Photograph moldings, fireplaces, window reveals, parquet, and any areas where original flooring or trim has been altered. Decide which elements will be restored, repaired, or left exposed.
  2. Map movement and sightlines. Mark the route from the entry through the living and dining rooms, note where the kitchen alcove begins, and identify which doors should remain visually quiet. Paint boundaries should support these sightlines rather than create arbitrary room-by-room breaks.
  3. Build a physical material board. Place cream paint samples beside antique or proposed parquet, the kitchen’s wood finish, concrete, bathroom tile, stainless steel, and curtain fabrics. The project depends on differences in texture and sheen, so a digital color swatch alone is insufficient.
  4. Test in the apartment’s real light. Observe samples during the soft morning light associated with the east-facing windows and again under evening lamps. Keep notes on how the color sits beside restored molding and the fireplace.
  5. Choose sheen with the surface in mind. The documented interior contrasts painted walls with varnished wood, waxed and polished concrete, textured tile, and metal. Reproduce that contrast through the appropriate finish for each substrate, not by adding more colors.
  6. Paint in a connected sequence. Where rooms share a sightline, carry the principal neutral through the visible wall planes. Let the kitchen cabinetry, parquet, curtains, and furnishings supply distinction inside that continuous field.
  7. Install and edit furnishings last. Place the largest seating, dining table, and storage pieces first. Add lighting, art, and vintage objects only after circulation remains clear; the apartment’s design question is whether each space functions as one entity without encroaching on the next.

What this apartment does—and does not—prove

The documented area, two-thirds living-room proportion, and material choices describe one renovation. They do not establish a universal formula for making every small apartment feel larger, nor do they provide laboratory evidence about the durability, maintenance, or performance of waxed concrete, parquet, tile, paint, or metal. Treat the palette as a specific design example rather than a product test.

The feature also does not provide paint brand names, color numbers, construction costs, or a complete inventory of every furnishing source. The Noguchi Akari 45A pendant is identified by name, but current stock, pricing, and marketplace availability are not established by the project description. The same caution applies to the vintage and secondhand pieces: their value here is their contribution to the composition, not a guarantee that identical items can be found.

The lasting lesson for a natural-tone interior

This Haussmannian apartment feels coherent because the renovation aligns three decisions: circulation is opened along the windowed rooms, period elements are restored rather than disguised, and a restrained paint color allows materially different objects to coexist. Cream walls do not erase character; they make the restored molding, fireplace, parquet, wood cabinetry, concrete, metal, curtains, and collected furniture easier to read together.

That is the transferable idea for a painting project. Begin with the room’s architecture and movement, establish one dependable neutral field, and let texture, finish, light, and carefully chosen objects provide the variety. The result can be warm without being busy and historical without becoming a museum set.
