The project in one view

The documented installation was a commercial flooring project rather than a laboratory trial or a general installation specification. Architecture & Design Team reported on 2 January 2012 that Nuplex Surecote 200HS epoxy flooring had been installed at the Krispy Kreme Bakery in Hyperdome, Loganholme, Queensland.

Project detail What the 2012 article reports
Site Krispy Kreme Bakery, Hyperdome, Loganholme, Queensland
Floor area 300 m²
Main coating Nuplex Surecote 200HS, described as a two-component epoxy floor coating applied to concrete
Coving material Surecote 500, described as a two-pack trowel-on epoxy
Flooring specialist Sunflek Surfaces
Construction relationship The work was reported as being for Lanskey Construction
Reported preparation and application period Four days
Slip-resistance treatment Fine 30–60 aggregate broadcast into the first coating layer

The account is useful because it shows how one food-production facility addressed a demanding refurbishment: an existing floor was stripped and mechanically prepared, a textured epoxy build-up was installed, and the work was fitted into a short construction window. It does not establish that the same sequence, timing or performance will apply to another building.

Why this bakery needed more than a bare concrete surface

The article says the selected flooring system had to satisfy several project requirements: chemical resistance, slip resistance, hygiene, durability and resistance to mechanical abrasion. Those are the requirements stated for this job, not quantified test results published for the coating.

Each requirement points to a different design concern. Chemical resistance relates to the substances likely to contact a bakery floor. Slip resistance concerns how safely people can walk across the surface when contamination or moisture is possible. Hygiene concerns the cleanability and detailing of the finished floor. Durability and mechanical-abrasion resistance concern traffic and repeated use. The case study records that these considerations shaped the choice, but it does not rank them or say which one controlled the final specification.

A smooth decorative finish might be easier to clean, while an aggregate-textured finish can be selected when additional traction is required. The Loganholme project demonstrates that the team chose a texture-producing broadcast layer; it does not prove that this finish is optimal for every food facility or that it meets a particular current standard.

How the existing floor was prepared

Removing the carpet tiles

The starting surface was not bare, new concrete. Carpet tiles were removed from the area before the resin work began. That matters because a coating cannot be assessed independently of the substrate beneath it; old floor coverings, residues and weak material can affect the resulting system.

Removing adhesive residue

After the tiles were taken up, the adhesive was removed. The article does not name the adhesive, specify a chemical remover or give a residual-contamination limit. Its important factual point is that adhesive removal was treated as part of the preparation rather than left beneath the epoxy.

Diamond grinding the concrete

The exposed concrete was prepared with a diamond grinder. Diamond grinding is a mechanical method of cleaning and profiling concrete, and in this project it followed removal of the floor covering and adhesive. The source does not state the grinder model, depth of material removed, dust-control method, surface-profile measurement or moisture reading. Those omissions prevent the four-day account from being used as a complete specification for a new project.

For anyone examining the case as a precedent, the sequence is the key lesson: remove the existing finish, remove its adhesive, then mechanically prepare the concrete before applying resin. The article does not say that every concrete floor requires exactly the same sequence.

The reported Surecote 200HS build-up

First coating layer

Surecote 200HS was described as a two-component epoxy floor coating. The first coating layer was applied to the prepared concrete. The article does not provide the two components’ mixing ratio, pot life, coverage rate, application thickness, temperature limits or curing data, so none of those values can be inferred from the project report.

Broadcasting fine 30–60 aggregate

Fine 30–60 aggregate was broadcast into the first coating layer. In the reported design, the aggregate was the feature used to achieve the project’s required slip resistance. The description identifies the aggregate size range, but it does not identify the material, broadcast rate, coverage percentage, particle grading standard or measured slip-resistance result.

This is a build-up decision, not a claim that any 30–60 aggregate will provide the same traction in another location. Texture, binder coverage, cleaning conditions and the contaminants present in service can all affect how a floor behaves. A current specification therefore needs a supplier’s technical data and the project’s own slip-resistance criteria.

Final coat the following day

A further coat of Surecote 200HS was applied the next day. The reported sequence therefore consisted of a first epoxy layer, an aggregate broadcast into that wet layer, and a subsequent Surecote 200HS coat. The article does not state whether the second coat was applied after a particular cure window, nor does it give thickness or recoat instructions.

The additional coat would have enclosed the broadcast aggregate within the stated system, but the source does not describe the finished texture in visual or measured terms. It also does not state the final cure time before washing, production use or heavy traffic.

Why Surecote 500 was used at the coving

The project used Surecote 500 for coving and described it as a two-pack trowel-on epoxy. Coving creates a transition between the horizontal floor and an adjoining wall or vertical surface. In a bakery, that junction is part of the hygiene and cleanability discussion because it avoids treating the floor as an isolated flat plane.

The article does not give the cove height, radius, detail drawing, substrate preparation at the wall, or the relationship between the cove and the 200HS floor coats. It establishes only that a separate epoxy product was selected for this edge treatment. That distinction is important: a project can use one product for the field floor and another for shaped coves, and a quotation that includes only floor coating may not include the same perimeter work.

The four-day programme and weekend handover

Architecture & Design Team reported that preparation and application took four days. The final coating was completed over a weekend so construction could continue the following week. These are project-specific timings, not a general production-rate promise.

Reported stage Timing or sequence stated in the article What is not stated
Strip-out Carpet tiles and adhesive were removed before coating Labour numbers, equipment and exact duration
Concrete preparation Concrete was diamond-ground Surface profile, moisture limits and cleaning method
Initial epoxy application First Surecote 200HS layer applied Thickness, coverage and environmental conditions
Texture installation Fine 30–60 aggregate broadcast into the first layer Broadcast rate and measured slip result
Second epoxy application Further Surecote 200HS coat applied the next day Recoat interval, cure state and final thickness
Completion Final coating completed over a weekend; four days total reported for preparation and application Return-to-service criteria and post-installation testing

Scheduling the final coating over a weekend shows how the flooring work was coordinated with the wider construction programme. It does not show that the floor was ready for food production immediately afterward, because the article gives no cure-to-service instruction.

Who did what on the Loganholme job

  • Nuplex Construction Products: The manufacturer named in the article for Surecote 200HS and Surecote 500.
  • Sunflek Surfaces: Identified as the flooring specialist that carried out the work.
  • Lanskey Construction: Identified in the report in connection with the project contractor/client relationship.
  • Architecture & Design Team: The byline for the 2 January 2012 account.

No named person is quoted in the source. The article’s account is written by Architecture & Design Team, so statements about the requirements, sequence and timing should be attributed to that report rather than presented as an interviewee’s testimony.

What the case study establishes—and what it does not

Question Evidence from the article Boundary of the evidence
Was an epoxy floor used? Yes. Surecote 200HS is described as a two-component epoxy floor coating on concrete. The report is historical and does not confirm current formulation or availability.
Was slip resistance considered? Yes. Fine 30–60 aggregate was broadcast into the first coat for the required slip resistance. No test method, rating or measured result is supplied.
Were hygiene and chemical exposure considered? Yes. They are listed among the project requirements. No chemical list, cleaning regime, certification or hygiene test is supplied.
Was abrasion resistance demonstrated? The article says resistance to mechanical abrasion was a requirement the system met. No wear test, service-life figure or independent verification is reported.
Was the work completed quickly? Preparation and application were reported as four days, with completion over a weekend. That duration applies to this 300 m² project and cannot be used as a universal rate.
Is the product currently supplied? Not established by the 2012 account. Current technical data, inventory, contacts and warranty terms require direct verification.

How to use this historical example when assessing a current project

The Loganholme installation is best used as a checklist of questions, not as a ready-made specification. A facilities manager or builder reviewing a present-day bakery, commercial kitchen or similar area should obtain current documentation before selecting any epoxy system.

  1. Define the exposure. List the chemicals, food substances, oils, cleaning agents, temperatures and traffic that the floor will actually encounter. The 2012 article names chemical resistance and abrasion as requirements but supplies no exposure schedule.
  2. Set a measurable slip criterion. Decide how slip resistance will be assessed, under what wet or contaminated condition and by which current standard. The case study records an aggregate broadcast, not a numerical result.
  3. Inspect the substrate. Confirm whether existing tiles, adhesive, laitance, coatings or contamination must be removed. The documented job required tile and adhesive removal followed by diamond grinding.
  4. Separate field-floor and cove details. Ask whether the quotation includes a shaped cove, its dimensions and the material used. Loganholme used Surecote 500 for coving rather than treating the edge as an afterthought.
  5. Request current technical documents. Obtain the product data sheet, safety data sheet, mixing instructions, coverage, thickness, recoat window, curing schedule, environmental limits and chemical-resistance information for the exact current product.
  6. Plan the shutdown. Coordinate preparation, coating and cure with production access. The historical team used a weekend completion window, but a current schedule must be based on the actual system and conditions.
  7. Agree acceptance checks. Establish how surface preparation, coating continuity, cove installation, texture and readiness for service will be inspected and recorded.

These steps do not turn the 2012 report into a modern installation manual. They identify the decisions that the case makes visible while leaving technical values to current, job-specific documentation.

Questions the original article leaves open

  • What were the exact Surecote 200HS and Surecote 500 formulations in 2012?
  • What mixing ratio, wet-film thickness and coverage were used?
  • What type of aggregate made up the 30–60 broadcast, and how much was applied?
  • What slip-resistance test and result supported the stated requirement?
  • How long did the coating cure before cleaning, traffic or food production?
  • What chemicals and cleaning temperatures were included in the resistance requirement?
  • Was any independent testing, certification or warranty issued?
  • Are the named products still manufactured, and are current data sheets available?

None of those details appears in the published account. Supplying an answer from memory would risk converting a historical project description into an unsupported specification.

Bottom line from the Loganholme case

The Architecture & Design report presents Nuplex Surecote 200HS as the central flooring material in a 300 m² bakery refurbishment where the team removed carpet and adhesive, diamond-ground the concrete, broadcast fine 30–60 aggregate for the required slip resistance, applied another Surecote 200HS coat the next day and used Surecote 500 for coving. The reported four-day programme and stated requirements—chemical resistance, slip resistance, hygiene, durability and mechanical-abrasion resistance—describe what that project set out to achieve. They are not current product specifications, independent test results or a guarantee for another site.

For a present-day decision, the enduring lesson is the coordination of substrate preparation, texture, coving and shutdown time. Product status, performance values and installation limits must be confirmed from current manufacturer documentation and the requirements of the particular facility.
