Anthony Brewington’s one-bedroom, 1940 Craftsman cottage in Leighton, Alabama, feels larger than its footprint because every object has a job in the story of the house. For nearly 30 years, the landscape gardener has gathered antique furniture, garden tools, kitchen pieces, artwork, and small curiosities, then arranged related items together rather than scattering them randomly. The result is not a museum staged around pristine pieces. It is a working home organized around patina, memory, and a sharp eye for objects that are genuinely unusual.
The cottage at a glance
Country Living’s feature by Rhonda Reinhart, published on its website January 13, 2026 and originally appearing in the November 2021 issue, presents the house as a study in collecting with intention. These are the details that establish the setting:

The article does not present the cottage as a renovation before-and-after or as a catalog of expensive purchases. Its interest is cumulative: decades of looking, buying, living with, and rearranging objects until the collections read as one personal interior.
A collection becomes the house’s organizing system
Brewington’s approach starts with selection, not decoration. He says, “If they’re not that different or interesting, I won’t buy them.” That standard explains why a small home can hold many categories without looking like a random accumulation. Each group has a recognizable subject, material, or visual language.

The reported collections include antique garden tools, water-hose nozzles, pen-and-ink drawings, food tins, skillets, baking pans, pansy paintings, and bottle openers with Greek- and Roman-themed details. They come from different decades and centuries, but the display method gives them a common rhythm: similar things are placed with similar things, so the eye can understand a group before moving to the next one.

A small room cannot rely on long sightlines or multiple formal zones to make a large assortment feel calm. Grouping supplies the boundaries. A cluster of kitchen objects reads as a collection; the same pieces spread across a room would read as clutter.
The entry cabinet that started the focus
The first strong visual statement appears in the entry, where a glass-front cabinet described as dating to the 1840s houses Brewington’s water-hose nozzle collection. The feature says this collection started his collecting focus.
The cabinet performs two jobs at once. Its doors protect small metal objects from being handled constantly, while the glass keeps the contents visible as soon as someone enters. The age of the cabinet also creates a deliberate contrast with the practical, industrial forms of the nozzles. Neither object has been stripped of its history to match the other.
For a homeowner adapting the idea, the lesson is not to find an identical antique cabinet. It is to give a narrow category a defined container. A glazed bookcase, shallow wall case, or open shelf can make a small collection legible if the pieces are kept together and arranged so their silhouettes remain visible.

Why the living-room gallery wall works
The living room uses a different strategy for flat objects. Black-and-white etchings and pen-and-ink drawings are grouped on a gallery wall in simple black frames. The consistent frames act as a visual rule, allowing the drawings to vary while the wall still feels composed.

This is one of the clearest examples in the feature of maximizing a small footprint vertically. The wall carries many works without taking floor space away from furniture or circulation. Because the art shares a limited palette, the arrangement can be dense without becoming noisy.
A practical sequence for a similar wall
- Choose one visual rule, such as black frames, a monochrome palette, or the same mat treatment.
- Lay the pieces on the floor first so you can test spacing without adding holes to the wall.
- Keep related works together instead of distributing them across every room.
- Use the largest or most distinctive work as an anchor, then build the smaller pieces around it.
- Leave enough space for each drawing’s edges to remain readable; a crowded arrangement can erase the very differences that make a collection worth displaying.
These steps are an interpretation of the feature’s grouping principle, not a claim that the article specifies hanging measurements or a prescribed layout.
The kitchen floor turns a comic strip into a painted surface
The kitchen provides the cottage’s most direct connection to painting. Its splatter motif was inspired by a Nancy comic strip from the 1940s. Brewington made a stencil and hand-painted the design over a couple of weekends.

The reference is personal and period-specific, yet the execution is handmade. A repeated stencil gives the pattern enough consistency to cover a surface, while hand application preserves small variations from one mark to the next.
What the stencil method accomplishes
- Repeatability: A stencil lets a motif recur across the floor without requiring every mark to be drawn freehand.
- Scale control: The maker can test the size of the pattern before committing to the whole room.
- Visible authorship: Hand painting leaves evidence that the surface was made for this house, not selected from a generic catalog.
- Weekend-sized progress: The feature says the work took a couple of weekends, indicating a phased project rather than a one-day transformation.
The article does not identify the floor’s paint type, sheen, preparation method, protective topcoat, or maintenance schedule. Anyone copying the idea should choose products and test methods appropriate to the existing flooring, but those technical specifications cannot be inferred from the home tour.
Color is used as a supporting layer
The feature’s “Get the Look” details name three colors associated with the cottage: Dark Chocolate on the living-room wall, Clover Green in the office, and After Midnight on the bedroom door. They are presented as editorial color references, not as current product recommendations; the article does not state finish, sheen, application specifications, or present-day availability.

As a composition, the colors show how a small house can use strong hues without requiring every room to match. A deep living-room wall can provide a dark field for framed drawings. A green office can distinguish a work area from the public rooms. A dark bedroom door can act as a concentrated accent rather than forcing an entire bedroom into the same color.

If you borrow this idea, treat each color as a boundary or backdrop for a collection. Test samples in the actual light of the room, and decide whether the color is meant to recede behind objects or announce itself as an object-like feature. Those decisions depend on your walls and lighting, not on the names alone.
Found condition is part of the aesthetic
Brewington generally leaves furniture and knickknacks in their as-found state. That choice is central to the cottage’s character. Scratches, worn finishes, faded surfaces, and mismatched repairs are evidence that an object has been used and retained.
Preserving that condition also prevents a common small-space problem: too many competing “improvements.” If every piece is refinished, repainted, or standardized, the collection can lose the differences that made each object worth keeping. Leaving selected pieces alone gives the eye a range of textures and ages.
As-found does not mean careless. Stable placement, sensible clearances, and protection from moisture or direct sun can preserve an object without erasing its surface. The distinction is between conservation-minded care and cosmetic alteration for the sake of uniformity.

How to apply the cottage’s lessons in a small home
1. Define the category before you buy
Start with a subject you can name precisely: garden tools, tins, drawings, baking pans, or another narrow field. A specific category makes it easier to recognize a meaningful addition and resist a merely convenient purchase. Brewington’s rule about buying only objects that are “different or interesting” is a useful filter.

2. Give the category a home
Choose one cabinet, wall, shelf, or section of a room for the group. The entry cabinet gives the nozzle collection a clear address. A defined location also reveals when the group has reached the amount the space can hold.
3. Display by relationship
Arrange objects by a visible relationship: function, material, color, period, or scale. The drawings share a black-and-white character and black frames. Kitchen pieces can be grouped by use or shape. The relationship should be apparent to a visitor without a long explanation.
4. Use vertical surfaces first
Walls and tall storage increase display capacity without consuming the floor area needed to move through a cottage. A gallery wall or glass-front case can hold many small pieces while keeping tables and counters usable.
5. Keep one or two surfaces intentionally quiet
A collection gains impact when it has a visual pause around it. Not every wall, shelf, or doorway needs an object. Quiet areas help the eye separate one group from another and keep the house from becoming an undifferentiated field of stuff.
6. Let the architecture and the objects disagree slightly
The 1840s cabinet, practical hose nozzles, 1940s comic reference, and later household objects do not belong to one manufactured set. Their controlled mismatch is what makes the rooms feel collected over time. Aim for compatibility, not a staged period replica.

- Garden tools and hose nozzles: Functional forms connect the interior to Brewington’s work as a landscape gardener.
- Food tins, skillets, and baking pans: Everyday kitchen objects bring pattern, metal texture, and domestic history into view.
- Pen-and-ink drawings and etchings: The gallery wall adds a graphic, two-dimensional counterpoint to heavier furniture and tools.
- Pansy paintings: Floral imagery introduces a softer subject without requiring a pastel or uniformly traditional room.
- Greek- and Roman-themed bottle openers: Small curiosities reward close looking and show how a collection can be built around theme as much as function.
The point is not that every room needs all of these categories. It is that a collection becomes persuasive when its contents reveal something about the person who chose them.
Sourcing without turning the home into a shopping list
The feature mentions Scott Antique Markets and eBay as sources connected with the home’s antiques. Those references establish where some objects came from in the story; they are not endorsements, affiliate offers, or evidence of current inventory.
Brewington’s own explanation is more important than any particular marketplace: “You don’t have to go out and buy antiques at Sotheby’s to have a stylish, great house.” Flea markets, estate sales, local dealers, inherited pieces, and ordinary online listings can all support the same approach if the object has a history or quality you genuinely value.
Before buying, inspect condition, dimensions, mounting needs, and the way the piece will relate to what you already own. A low price does not make an object a good fit, and a famous provenance is not required for a collection to feel personal.
What this home tour does—and does not—establish
The Country Living feature documents one homeowner’s rooms, collections, and projects. It does not provide independent market data, a statistical study of antique collecting, or a tested decorating method. The ages and counts attached to the house and objects are story details, not representative statistics.
It also does not specify the technical system behind the painted kitchen floor, the finish of the named wall colors, or a complete inventory of every antique in the cottage. Those limits do not weaken the central lesson: the house achieves coherence through selective collecting, grouped display, and respect for an object’s existing character.
The lasting idea behind the Alabama cottage
Brewington’s cottage works because it treats collections as a record of attention. A water-hose nozzle can anchor an entry, drawings can occupy a full wall, and a comic-strip memory can become a floor pattern when each choice is allowed to remain specific. The rooms do not depend on matching furniture or pristine antiques. They depend on knowing what is worth keeping, placing related things together, and allowing age to remain visible.
For a small home, that is a practical form of style. Buy fewer objects, choose ones with a story or an unusual quality, give each group a defined place, and use paint or a handmade pattern to support—not erase—the character already there.
