At Ausgrid’s Learning Centre in Silverwater, NSW, Safetyline Jalousie louvre windows form part of a building-management strategy for natural ventilation. Safetyline says motorised louvres open when conditions are comfortable, then close when temperatures move outside the intended range so heating or air conditioning can operate. In workshop areas, the louvres are described as working with exhaust fans without air conditioning.

The project: a training and research facility in Silverwater

Ausgrid’s Learning Centre is located in Silverwater, NSW, in the wider Sydney area. Safetyline Jalousie describes it as a $75 million, state-of-the-art home base for Sydney apprentices and about 125 other staff. The purpose-built facility accommodates training, research and development, and includes an Energy Efficiency Centre that Safetyline says is open to the public.

The manufacturer presents natural ventilation as a central part of the design brief. Its project account states: “With the design brief for the Centre focused around energy efficiency, a key area was natural ventilation.” That wording describes the project’s design intent; it is not a measured energy result.

Safetyline also reports that the facility achieved a “6 Star Green Star Rated – Education Design v.1” rating. The rating is retained here as the manufacturer’s project description because an independent certification record was not identified. The available project material does not name the architect, builder, completion date or opening date.

Where the louvre windows were used

The louvre system was not limited to one façade or one type of room. Safetyline says its windows were used throughout the Learning Centre, including enclosed training rooms, external walls and walkways. That distribution allowed the ventilation approach to be applied across occupied teaching areas, circulation spaces and perimeter openings rather than treating the louvres as a single-room feature.

The portfolio specification records 153 supplied units. Individual units vary substantially in size, allowing the system to be configured for different openings in the building.

The dimensions are ranges across the supplied units, not a single standard window size. Similarly, the two operating methods indicate a mixed installation: some openings are operated with conventional levers, while others use motors connected to the building-management strategy.

How the ventilation controls were described

Manual and motorised operation in one installation

Safetyline specifies a combination of standard levers and motorised louvre units. The lever-operated windows provide local manual control where that suits the room or opening. Motorised units can receive commands from the Centre’s building management system (BMS), allowing operation to follow programmed environmental conditions.

The case study does not state which exact rooms use levers and which use motors. It also does not publish actuator models, wiring diagrams, control sequences, alarm priorities or fire-control interfaces. Those details would need to come from the project’s technical documentation rather than being inferred from the portfolio entry.

Automatic control through the BMS

Safetyline says the motorised louvres were automatically controlled through the Centre’s BMS in support of the natural-ventilation strategy. The manufacturer’s auditorium example describes a simple operating sequence:

  1. Comfortable measured temperature: the louvres remain open while the auditorium’s air temperature is within the acceptable range programmed for the space.
  2. Temperature moves outside the specified range: when the temperature rises or falls beyond that range, the system activates heating or air conditioning and closes the louvres.
  3. Mechanical conditioning takes over: closing the openings prevents the natural-ventilation mode from continuing while heating or cooling is being used, according to Safetyline’s description.

No numerical temperature setpoints are published. “Comfortable” and “specified range” therefore describe the control concept, not a documented value such as 22 °C or 24 °C. The sequence should not be treated as a universal BMS recipe for other buildings.

Workshop ventilation without air conditioning

For the workshops, Safetyline says the louvres worked with exhaust fans without air conditioning. In that arrangement, the louvres provide openings for incoming or replacement air while fans remove air from the space. The account does not provide airflow rates, fan capacities, pressure readings, indoor-air-quality measurements or operating schedules, so it establishes the intended relationship between the windows and fans rather than a quantified ventilation performance.

Why Safetyline says the windows were selected

The manufacturer identifies three considerations behind the louvre selection. They are project rationale supplied by Safetyline, not independent comparative test results.

Security near ground-level openings

Safetyline says security was important for louvres located near ground level. The case study does not specify the security classification, locking hardware, forced-entry test standard or the exact openings to which additional security measures applied. The relevant point is that security was considered when selecting a louvre solution for accessible parts of the building.

Weatherproof seals on each louvre

The project account highlights weatherproof seals on each louvre. Sealing is particularly relevant where operable blades are installed in external walls, but the published material does not give an air-infiltration rate, water-penetration result, pressure class or laboratory test report for this installation. The claim should therefore be read as Safetyline’s description of the product feature, not as a project-specific weather-performance certification.

A broad horizontal appearance

Safetyline also cites the aesthetic benefit of extra-wide openings with more continuous horizontal lines. The louvre format lets a façade or internal opening be composed of repeated horizontal glass blades rather than a collection of smaller vertical sashes. The project page presents that visual quality as part of the selection rationale; it does not provide architectural drawings or a comparative visual assessment against another window type.

What the specification says about the installed windows

The 6 mm Green Sunergy toughened glass is identified as the glazing used in the supplied units. “Toughened” describes the glass type stated in the specification, while “Green Sunergy” is the named glass product in Safetyline’s project information. No solar-heat-gain coefficient, visible-light transmission, acoustic rating or thermal-value data is given for the glazing in the reviewed account.

The clear anodised finish is the specified frame finish. Because the units range from 600 to 1,954 mm high and from 900 to 1,200 mm wide, the installation was tailored to openings of different proportions. Those dimensions should not be read as the maximum capability of every Safetyline system; they are the ranges reported for this project’s 153 units.

The portfolio also lists “DEM” under additional information but does not define the abbreviation. It should remain unexpanded unless the manufacturer or the project’s specification documents provide a confirmed meaning.

How the system supports the building’s natural-ventilation strategy

The Learning Centre’s approach combines three elements described by Safetyline: operable louvre openings, sensors and logic managed through the BMS, and mechanical systems used when conditions leave the natural-ventilation range. The windows are therefore part of a coordinated control strategy rather than an isolated manual-opening solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the auditorium example, the BMS can keep openings available while indoor temperature is acceptable and close them when heating or cooling is called. In the workshops, the louvres are paired with exhaust fans instead of air conditioning. These two examples show that the same window system can support different room strategies: mixed-mode operation in one space and fan-assisted ventilation in another.

  • Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.

That distinction matters when interpreting the project. The case study describes how the controls are intended to behave, but it does not report how often the louvres opened, how much outside air entered, how many hours the auditorium operated in natural-ventilation mode or how much electricity the strategy used.

What has not been measured or published

Safetyline’s project material documents the product selection and control concept, but it does not publish a measured energy-savings figure. There is no reported annual reduction in electricity or gas use, no ventilation-rate measurement, no indoor-temperature dataset and no post-occupancy evaluation in the reviewed project account.

Consequently, the $75 million project value, the “about 125 other staff” figure and the reported Green Star rating should not be used to calculate a return on investment or to claim that the louvres delivered a specific percentage reduction in energy use. The source supports a design-intent and system-description story, not a verified performance benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The material also does not establish exact BMS temperature thresholds, commissioning results, maintenance intervals, actuator failure rates, acoustic performance, fall-protection details or compliance with a particular security or weather-test standard. Those questions require project records, manufacturer technical documentation or independent testing.

Why this is a commercial specification, not a consumer replacement guide

The installed product is the Safetyline SJ Jalousie commercial louvre window system configured for Ausgrid’s building. Safetyline provides technical drawings, product information, warranty, performance, maintenance and specification resources for professional use. The project is not documented as a standard retail package, and generic consumer louvre windows, replacement blades or parts should not be assumed to fit the Learning Centre’s frames, operators or BMS connections.

For a comparable commercial project, a proper specification would need to address opening area, manual versus motorised operation, security at accessible openings, weather and air sealing, control-system integration, maintenance access and the visual treatment of the façade. The Ausgrid case study identifies those issues in broad terms but does not provide a like-for-like cost comparison or performance ranking against alternative window systems.

What the Ausgrid example demonstrates

Safetyline’s account shows a louvre installation designed around controllable natural ventilation in a mixed-use training facility. The 153 units span enclosed rooms, external walls and walkways; standard levers and motorised units are combined; and the motorised openings are described as operating through the BMS. The auditorium sequence uses natural ventilation while temperature remains acceptable and switches to closed louvres with heating or cooling outside that range. Workshops are described as using the louvres with exhaust fans without air conditioning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The strongest documented conclusion is therefore about integration: the windows were selected and configured as components of Ausgrid’s ventilation strategy, with security, sealing and horizontal appearance identified by Safetyline as selection considerations. The available project information does not establish a quantified energy outcome or independently verify the stated Green Star rating.
