How Sherwin-Williams Rosemary Makes Warm Stone Stand Out on a Colorado Exterior

A Colorado case study shows why dark green siding can contrast with warm stone instead of matching it, with Taupe Tone, Egret White and Stolen Kiss assigned to specific exterior surfaces.

Yes—siding can contrast with warm stone instead of matching it. In a Colorado project published by Michelle Marceny of The Color Concierge on September 13, 2026, Sherwin-Williams Rosemary SW 6187 supplies a warm, dark green backdrop that makes existing stone more noticeable. Taupe Tone, Egret White and a near-black red accent then assign the supporting surfaces enough connection, lightness and emphasis to keep the exterior from looking heavy.

This four-color arrangement is a case study, not a universal formula. Stone undertones, window frames, roof color, daylight, landscaping and the way a family uses its front and rear outdoor spaces can all change the right answer. Use the project to understand the design logic, then test colors on your own house before ordering paint.

The Colorado house and the design problem

The suburban Colorado homeowner wanted to refresh a house with large areas of warm stone without removing or replacing that masonry. The previous exterior used muted dark-blue siding, dark gables and a front door that repeated the gable color. Rather than search for a siding color that disappeared into the stone, Marceny designed a controlled contrast.

Her central explanation is straightforward: We didn’t pull Rosemary from the stone. We chose it to contrast with the stone and show off its beauty. — Michelle Marceny, Certified Color Expert and founder of The Color Concierge, in the project spotlight published September 13, 2026 (The Color Concierge project article).

The result separates the fixed masonry from the changeable painted surfaces. Rosemary occupies the broad siding areas, Taupe Tone echoes selected stone tones, Egret White lifts the trim, and Stolen Kiss gives the entry a concentrated focal point.

The four-color exterior palette

The table below records the placements and the light-reflectance values (LRV) reported by the project source. LRV is presented there as a 0-to-100 scale. These figures are attributed to The Color Concierge’s 2026 project table, not independently checked manufacturer specifications.

Color Reported LRV Where it was used Job in the composition
Sherwin-Williams Rosemary SW 6187 14 — The Color Concierge, 2026 Main siding, including the rear elevation Warm, dark contrast that frames and reveals the stone
Sherwin-Williams Taupe Tone SW 7633 36 — The Color Concierge, 2026 Gables, garage doors, front cement foundation, rear columns and downspouts where they cross stone Connects selected painted surfaces to tones already visible in the masonry
Sherwin-Williams Egret White SW 7570 70 — The Color Concierge, 2026 Fascia, soffits, gutters, trim and porch ceilings Provides a lighter frame and a brighter overhead surface
Sherwin-Williams Stolen Kiss SW 7586 7 — The Color Concierge, 2026 Front door and sidelight Creates a small, very dark entry accent

The source also offers peel-and-stick samples of all four colors and says its consultancy uses Samplize samples made with manufacturer paint. Check the current destination and terms on the project page before treating that sample link as a purchase option.

Why the siding does not match the stone

Matching the siding to the stone can seem like the safest choice, but a near-match may flatten the façade. Marceny says colors that sit too close to the stone can make an exterior feel heavy and one-dimensional. Rosemary instead supplies a distinct field color, so the irregular texture and warmer variation of the masonry remain visible.

Taupe Tone performs the matching function selectively rather than across the entire body. It is drawn from tones in the stone and placed on architectural parts that benefit from visual continuity: the gables, garage doors, foundation, rear columns and downspouts crossing the masonry. This keeps those pieces related to the stone without allowing the whole house to become one uninterrupted brown or taupe mass.

The lesson is not that every warm-stone house needs green. It is that the broad siding color can take a deliberate complementary or contrasting position while a smaller secondary color handles the connection to the masonry. Your stone may read more gray, pink, gold or orange than this project’s stone, so the same named colors can produce a different balance.

What Rosemary contributes—and why its darkness matters

The project reports an LRV of 14 for Rosemary. On the source’s 0-to-100 scale, that places it among the darker colors in this palette. Marceny describes subtle yellow undertones that keep the green warm rather than icy.

A separate Rosemary exterior review notes that the color changes between shade and sun (Sherwin-Williams Rosemary 6187 Exterior Color Palette, May 23, 2025). That behavior is important on a house with multiple orientations: a wall under an overhang, a north-facing side and a sunlit front wall may not show the same apparent green. The color’s warmth and depth should therefore be judged on the actual elevations, not from a small screen swatch.

Rosemary is dark enough to create a strong edge around warm stone, but the project does not use it indiscriminately as every exterior surface. Lighter Egret White and mid-value Taupe Tone interrupt the dark field, while Stolen Kiss reserves the deepest accent for the entry. That hierarchy gives the siding presence without making every component compete for attention.

How each supporting color controls the façade

Taupe Tone: the stone connection

Taupe Tone is repeated on several secondary surfaces, but each placement has a reason. On the gables and garage doors, it relates those larger blocks to the masonry. On the front foundation, it visually grounds the lower edge. On the rear columns and the downspouts that cross stone, it prevents narrow vertical elements from appearing unrelated to the wall behind them.

Because Taupe Tone is lighter than Rosemary in the reported values (LRV 36 versus 14), it also breaks up the dark siding. The source does not claim that this exact LRV relationship will work for every stone; sample the pair together where the stone’s strongest colors are visible.

Egret White: a warm, lighter frame

Egret White has a reported LRV of 70 and covers fascia, soffits, gutters, trim and porch ceilings. The project deliberately does not force the trim to match bright-white vinyl windows exactly. A warmer, darker trim white can sit next to bright window frames and still look intentional.

This is a useful distinction for replacement-window houses. Treat the window frame as one fixed material, not as a command that every other white surface must copy. Egret White establishes a cohesive painted frame for the roofline and openings while accepting a visible difference at the glass.

Stolen Kiss: a concentrated front-door accent

Stolen Kiss, reported at LRV 7, is used only on the front door and sidelight. Its very dark value makes the entry read as a deliberate destination rather than another broad siding plane. Limiting it to the door assembly keeps the accent strong; extending such a dark color to large areas would change the visual weight of the entire façade.

Why the rear elevation should not be an afterthought

The front and back of a house answer different questions. The front is viewed from the street and must relate to the entry, garage and approach. The rear is experienced from a yard, deck or covered porch, often at close range and for longer periods.

In this project, Marceny tested a rear arrangement with Taupe Tone beneath the rear gable. She rejected it because that placement made the covered porch feel darker. The final version carries Rosemary across the rear, uses Taupe Tone on the columns and puts Egret White on the porch ceiling. According to the designer, that combination felt brighter in the occupied outdoor area.

The practical principle is to assign colors according to use, not symmetry alone. A rear ceiling that receives little direct light may benefit from the palette’s lighter color, while columns can take the stone-linked mid-tone. A rear wall that is viewed against trees, lawn or mountains may need a different contrast than the street-facing elevation. The source supplies one successful arrangement, not a rule that every front and back must be identical.

How to adapt the palette to your own house

Start with the materials you cannot or do not want to replace. Photograph the stone, roof, window frames, fixed doors, metalwork and major landscaping in morning, midday and late-day light. Look for the colors that remain visible across those conditions rather than choosing from a single shaded photograph.

  1. Identify the stone’s dominant and secondary undertones. Decide whether the masonry is mainly warm beige, yellow, pink, brown or a mixed field. Note which tones appear in shadow joints and which appear on sunlit faces.
  2. Choose the siding relationship. Decide whether you want clear contrast, as Rosemary provides in the Colorado example, or a quieter relationship. Do not assume a stone-matching siding color will be lighter or more harmonious; it can also make the exterior feel dense.
  3. Assign a connector color. Select a mid-tone that can repeat on gables, garage doors, a foundation or narrow elements crossing the stone. It should relate to the masonry without covering every painted surface.
  4. Set the trim strategy. Compare the candidate trim color with the actual window frames. A trim white may be warmer or darker than bright vinyl and still be intentional, as Egret White is here.
  5. Reserve the strongest accent. Use the darkest or most saturated color on a limited feature such as the front door, rather than automatically spreading it to shutters, columns and siding.
  6. Evaluate front and rear separately. Stand where visitors approach the front and where occupants sit in the rear. Check whether overhangs, porch ceilings and vegetation alter the apparent brightness.

Sampling is the decision point, not a formality

The project article says testing the actual colors in the home’s light confirmed the choices. Follow that discipline even if you are using the same named colors. Place large peel-and-stick samples—or large, movable painted boards—on the stone-facing siding, a shaded wall, a sunny wall and the rear porch area. Keep the samples next to the window frames, roof edge and stone so you can judge the relationships together.

Observe them at several times of day and in both direct sun and shade. Rosemary’s documented shift between shade and sun makes this especially important. Move samples rather than relying on one wall: a color that looks balanced beside the front stone may look too dark beneath a covered rear porch.

Do not infer paint line, sheen, substrate preparation, coat count or application instructions from this case study. The project source does not specify those technical details. Confirm those choices for your siding material and climate before painting.

Common ways this approach can fail

The green looks colder than expected

Screen images and overcast conditions can suppress Rosemary’s warm character. Compare the sample in direct and indirect light beside your stone. If the undertone still feels wrong, reassess the color family rather than trying to correct a mismatch with trim alone.

The house feels too dark

Check whether the dark field has been extended to gables, porch ceilings, columns and trim. The Colorado arrangement keeps Rosemary on the siding while Egret White lifts overhead and edge surfaces. A covered porch may need the lighter ceiling treatment even when the rear wall remains dark.

The exterior looks disconnected from the stone

Review the secondary placements. Taupe Tone is not used randomly; it appears on specific surfaces that touch or visually align with the masonry. A connector color placed only on unrelated trim may not create the intended bridge.

The windows look pasted on

Bright vinyl frames can differ from a warmer trim white. That difference is acceptable when the trim has a clear role and is repeated consistently. Sample the trim beside the windows before deciding that an exact white match is necessary.

When a home-specific consultation is useful

A fixed palette cannot account for every combination of stone, brick, windows, roof, landscaping and orientation. The Color Concierge describes online exterior consultations that consider those elements (Online Paint Color Consults). Package details and availability can change, so verify current terms directly if you seek that kind of service.

Whether you work with a consultant or choose independently, the Colorado project offers a repeatable way to think: contrast the body with the masonry, use a stone-related mid-tone selectively, let trim respond to the whole material set rather than one window frame, and design the rear for how people actually occupy it.

Bottom line for a warm-stone exterior

Sherwin-Williams Rosemary works in this Colorado example because it is intentionally different from the warm stone, not because it was extracted from it. Taupe Tone supplies targeted continuity, Egret White adds a lighter architectural frame and porch ceiling, and Stolen Kiss focuses attention on the entry. Treat those roles as a design framework, test the actual colors in sun and shade on your property, and change the balance when your stone, light or outdoor use demands it.
