How Shinji Turns Indigo, Denim and Nightlife into a Japanese Steakhouse Interior

Shinji, a Japanese steakhouse in Toronto’s financial district, brings Japanese references into the room through atmosphere rather than literal theming. Odami’s design uses indigo limewash connected to denim, a central natural-stone chef’s table, locally sourced ash wood, nightlife-like corridor lighting, washroom sound and TOTO smart toilets. The result is a sequence of changing moods that begins as a quiet blue threshold from Bay Street and ends in playful, highly sensory restrooms.

The project was developed for Harlo Entertainment after managing partner Brandon Marek approached Toronto studio Odami; executive chef Jia Zou helped refine the restaurant vision. Eric Mutrie’s Aug. 20, 2026 feature in Azure Magazine documents how those references were translated into materials, circulation, lighting and small moments of surprise.

The design idea in one sentence

Shinji treats Japanese influence as a set of associations—indigo’s relationship to denim, the glow of urban nightlife, the familiarity of washroom technology and the pleasure of small visual jokes—rather than as a collection of decorative symbols. That approach lets the restaurant feel recognizably Japanese in mood while remaining a contemporary steakhouse in Toronto.

Bay Street becomes a blue threshold

An entrance that slows the transition

The indigo treatment starts at the entrance. Shinji sits in Toronto’s financial district, and the entry is designed as a buffer from the activity of Bay Street rather than as an immediate reveal of the dining room. A gradually sloped hallway leads guests inward, creating a physical and visual pause before the main space.

Slender linear pendant lights reinforce that movement. Their lines draw the eye toward an orange-lit bar and then toward the corridor leading to the restrooms. This gives the approach a clear visual destination without relying on a large sign or an oversized lobby feature.

A central chef’s table replaces the expected bar

In the main dining area, a long chef’s table occupies the central position that might otherwise have been used for a conventional bar. Food preparation is therefore part of the room’s composition: diners can see the chefs working, while the table anchors circulation around it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The table is made from natural stone, not an engineered substitute. Its irregularities are part of the intended character. Marek recalled that a contractor noticed the wood grains did not match and responded, “But that’s how you know it’s real. Trees aren’t identical.” The remark explains the project’s preference for material variation over a perfectly synchronized, showroom-like finish.

Light wood keeps the blue palette legible

Locally sourced ash wood appears in the chef’s table setting and in the restaurant’s tables, benches and chairs. Against the deep indigo walls, blue upholstery and blue acoustic baffling, the pale wood supplies a necessary counterweight. The contrast prevents the room from becoming visually flat or overwhelmingly dark.

Odami and the project team use that light-dark balance to maintain visual richness while keeping circulation clear. Guests can distinguish furniture, pathways and the central preparation area because the room is not built from one continuous tone. The material contrast is functional as well as atmospheric.

Why denim is Shinji’s main Japanese reference

Indigo limewash, not a denim-themed set

Odami links Shinji’s indigo palette to Japan’s denim industry. The reference is carried by limewashed walls and related blue finishes, not by covering the room in textile patterns or displaying denim as merchandise. The studio’s project description, quoted by Azure, puts the idea this way: “Equally at home as workwear or couture, denim derives its richness from wear, time, and repeated use.”

That sentence describes the design intention rather than offering a history of Japanese denim. At Shinji, indigo is used as a surface with depth and variation. Limewash catches light differently across the walls, so the blue reads as layered instead of as a single manufactured color.

Wear and repetition become an interior quality

The denim analogy also explains why natural materials matter. Denim becomes more individual through use; the stone, ash and limewash at Shinji are selected for the way they can show texture, grain and tonal change. The room’s richness comes from accumulated visual information rather than from a large number of unrelated ornaments.

This is why the pale ash furniture does not undermine the indigo concept. It gives the eye another material to read, much as contrasting stitching or worn areas give a denim garment its character. The palette stays narrow, but the surfaces are not uniform.

Nightlife references without installing a karaoke room

The rear corridor changes the tempo

At the back of the restaurant, a corridor uses glowing multicolour tubes that cycle through neon hues. Odami intended the effect to recall Japanese nightlife and karaoke bars. The lighting creates a deliberate break from the calmer indigo dining room: as guests move toward the restrooms, the color becomes more animated and the atmosphere more theatrical.

The distinction matters. Shinji’s design references karaoke-bar lighting, but the feature does not describe the restaurant as having karaoke facilities. The corridor borrows the visual impression of nightlife rather than reproducing a karaoke venue as a program.

Orange light provides a second focal point

The corridor is not the only saturated accent. The bar adjacent to the dining area is described as orange-lit, giving the arrival sequence a warm destination within the predominantly blue interior. The orange glow and the later neon tubes create a progression from controlled warmth to playful color.

Because the lighting changes along the route, the restaurant is experienced in stages. A guest does not see every effect at once; each turn reveals a different register of the design. That sequencing gives a relatively compact palette more dramatic range.

The restrooms extend the concept through sound and technology

A looped soundtrack turns the washroom into a designed room

Shinji’s restroom experience includes a looped audio track inspired by music Brandon Marek heard in Japanese washrooms during a research trip. The playlist moves from Elvis to the Beatles, and a Japanese voice actor appears in a looped disc-jockey recording. These are specific choices made for this project, not evidence that such programming is a universal feature of Japanese washrooms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sound changes the way the room is remembered. In the dining area, the central visual event is the chefs’ work; in the restroom corridor, the combination of light and audio creates a more private, slightly surreal interlude. The track also makes the washroom feel connected to the restaurant’s nightlife reference rather than treated as an unremarkable service zone.

Smart toilets make a functional reference visible

Each restroom stall is reported to contain a TOTO smart toilet with spraying and drying functions. The feature does not identify the model, price, installation requirements or compatibility details, so the installation should be understood as a category-level design choice rather than a specification for a particular retail product.

Marek described the familiarity of these fixtures in Japan by saying, “They’re everywhere in Japan,” and, “Even if it’s just a gas station washroom on the side of the road.” Those remarks are his observations as quoted in Azure, not independently measured prevalence statistics. At Shinji, the toilets contribute to the restaurant’s interpretation of Japanese everyday technology by making a practical feature part of the guest experience.

Anime and plush details prevent the room from becoming solemn

Anime posters and a plush stuffed animal add playful notes to the restrooms and central dining area. Their role is not to explain Japan or provide a comprehensive cultural display. Instead, they puncture the formality of the stone, ash and indigo palette with objects that feel casual, familiar and a little unexpected.

Placed after the more restrained dining room, these details make the transition to the restrooms feel intentional. The design can move from craft and material seriousness to humor without abandoning its overall visual language.

How circulation, acoustics and sightlines work together

The room is organized as a sequence

Shinji’s layout asks guests to read the restaurant while moving through it. The sloped entry hallway establishes the indigo threshold. Linear pendants point toward the orange-lit bar. The central chef’s table becomes the main visual and operational anchor. The rear corridor then shifts into multicolour light before the restrooms introduce sound, smart fixtures and playful objects.

Each stage answers a different need. The entry separates the restaurant from the street; the chef’s table gives the dining room a focus; the corridor helps orient guests toward the back; and the restroom design rewards attention even after the meal’s central activity has ended.

Acoustic elements are both practical and visual

Blue acoustic baffling is part of the indigo field, so sound control is integrated into the color strategy rather than hidden as an unrelated technical layer. The feature does not provide acoustic measurements, but it identifies the baffling as one of the surfaces that carries the deep-blue palette.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That integration matters in a steakhouse, where visible food preparation, conversation and movement can produce a busy soundscape. By making acoustic treatment part of the room’s appearance, the design avoids a sharp divide between performance and infrastructure.

What the Japanese references do—and do not—claim

  • They do connect indigo to denim. Odami frames the limewashed blue palette through the richness that denim gains from wear, time and repeated use.
  • They do evoke nightlife. The multicolour tube lighting recalls the impression of Japanese karaoke bars and urban nightlife.
  • They do include washroom-inspired sound. The looped track draws on music Marek encountered in Japanese washrooms and includes a Japanese voice actor.
  • They do specify smart toilet functions. The reported fixtures spray and dry, although no model is named.
  • They do not establish universal customs. The audio choices and Marek’s comments should not be generalized to every Japanese restaurant or public washroom.
  • They do not mean Shinji offers karaoke. Karaoke is a lighting and atmosphere reference, not a listed facility.

Why the material choices matter to the guest experience

Natural stone, ash, limewash, upholstery and acoustic baffling each carry a different kind of information. Stone gives the central table weight and permanence. Ash introduces visible grain and local sourcing. Limewash creates depth in the indigo walls. Upholstery extends the blue into softer surfaces, while baffling gives the palette a practical role.

Using real wood also leaves room for variation. Matching every grain would make the furniture feel assembled from identical parts; allowing differences supports Marek’s point that natural material is recognizable precisely because it is not perfectly uniform. The same principle appears in the stone and limewash, where texture is more important than flawless repetition.

The result is a room that can be photographed as a strong blue interior but is more varied in person. Warm wood, orange light, neon tubes and small character objects interrupt the dominant hue at carefully chosen points.

A visitor’s visual walkthrough

  1. Begin at the entrance. Notice how the indigo treatment separates Shinji from the busy financial-district street and how the sloped hallway slows the approach.
  2. Follow the pendant lines. The slender fixtures direct attention toward the orange-lit bar and establish the first warm counterpoint to the blue walls.
  3. Read the central table. The natural-stone chef’s table occupies the room’s center, making preparation visible where a conventional bar might have stood.
  4. Compare the surfaces. Look for the relationship between light ash furniture, indigo walls, blue upholstery and acoustic baffling.
  5. Move toward the rear corridor. The glowing tubes shift through neon hues, changing the mood from composed dining room to nightlife-inspired passage.
  6. Listen in the restroom area. The looped track, Japanese voice actor and music references make sound part of the architecture.
  7. Notice the playful interruption. Anime posters and the plush object keep the experience from becoming overly formal.

The design’s overall significance

Shinji’s Japanese references work because they are distributed across the whole visit instead of concentrated in a single decorative object. Indigo establishes identity, denim supplies a conceptual frame, ash and stone provide tactile credibility, lighting controls the pace, and the restrooms deliver the most explicit technological and playful gestures.

Odami’s strategy is therefore less about reproducing a Japanese setting than about translating selected impressions into a Toronto steakhouse. The references remain specific enough to be legible—denim, nightlife lighting, washroom sound and smart toilets—while the restaurant still operates as a contemporary dining room with visible cooking, clear circulation and a strong material hierarchy.

Bottom line: a Japanese reference system built from atmosphere

Shinji brings Japanese references into its design through a carefully staged combination of indigo, natural materials, nightlife lighting, sound and washroom technology. The restaurant’s identity comes from how those elements unfold from Bay Street to the chef’s table and finally to the playful restroom corridor, not from a literal themed décor package.
