Albert Park House uses honed Soft Grey Granite tile as a continuous visual thread through a four-level residence. A four-level house organized around a material sequence
Albert Park House is a four-bedroom residence in Albert Park, described in a Robertson’s Building Products project feature published on 21 June 2021 and updated on 22 July 2024. Fili Property is credited as developer, Zunica developed the interior scheme, and Matyas Architects designed the exterior. Rather than assigning the granite to one isolated feature wall, the team carries it between rooms and levels so that movement through the house becomes part of the material experience.

The result is not a catalogue of unrelated finishes. It is a deliberately restricted palette in which granite supplies texture and mineral variation, while timber and concrete keep the surrounding surfaces quiet enough for the stone to remain legible.

What the Soft Grey Granite tile is—and where it appears
The specified finish is honed Soft Grey Granite tile, sized at 230 × 76 × 10 mm and supplied by Robertson’s Building Products for the project. “Honed” describes the finish named in the feature; the article does not publish a slip rating, sealing schedule, cleaning method, durability test or other performance certification. Those technical decisions would need to be confirmed separately for any new installation.

The stairwell is the clearest demonstration of the design
A 12-metre vertical journey
The stairwell stretches 12 metres from the basement to the top floor. That distance gives the narrow tile a role larger than a decorative accent. A repeated 230 mm by 76 mm module establishes a visible rhythm along a route that connects every part of the house. Because the eye encounters the same grid while travelling upward, the stair becomes a continuous architectural room rather than a series of landings.

The darker basement descent
On the descent toward the basement, a solid Victorian Ash stair is enclosed by dark granite-tiled walls. The combination sets up a deliberate contrast: the stair has the visual weight of a single timber element, while the walls are articulated by many small stone units. In this lower portion, the feature describes the granite as reading darker, which gives the gym, sauna, laundry, bar and sunken lounge/theatre level a more enclosed character.
The lighter upper view
Above ground, the stair changes to a floating construction suspended between the tiled walls. A level-two skylight and floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows along the staircase bring in more daylight and views of greenery. The feature attributes the lighter appearance higher up to that glazing and skylight, not to a different tile. Direction of travel therefore changes the perception of one material: the same grey mineral surface is subdued below and more reflective above.
This is the project’s most useful lesson for anyone studying the photographs. Colour cannot be assessed independently of the opening, orientation and path through a space. The stone’s natural mineral variation is described as becoming more apparent where light reaches it, while the vertical layout keeps the changing tonal effect organized.

Why the vertical grid matters
The designers arranged the tiles in a “gridded vertical stack.” They also tried to preserve full tile widths and leave tiles uncut wherever possible. At 76 mm wide, each unit is much narrower than a conventional large-format wall tile. Repeating that width vertically produces a fine-grained surface with clear joints, while retaining full widths avoids introducing arbitrary slivers at edges.

The project feature does not state how corners, penetrations, movement joints or transitions were resolved, and it does not provide a setting-out drawing. Its documented point is narrower: the team sought a consistent grid and used the tile’s complete width as much as the layout allowed.
The narrow proportion also suits the stair. Long horizontal courses could have emphasized the length of the walls; the vertical stack instead reinforces ascent. At the hearth, the same module can be read against the horizontal bench, creating a controlled change of direction without introducing another colour or stone.

A restrained palette keeps the granite in focus
Granite and Victorian Ash
Granite supplies cool, textured mineral character. Victorian Ash supplies warmth and a more tactile grain. In the basement stair, the solid ash step is framed by the darker stone walls; higher up, the floating stair allows more light to pass between the same walls. The two materials are therefore contrasted by both colour temperature and construction.
Timber veneer and concrete
Timber veneer extends the wood note beyond the stair without competing with its solid mass. Concrete adds another quiet, neutral surface. Together with the grey granite, these finishes form a limited tonal range rather than a collection of accent colours. The project feature quotes Zunica’s aim of a contemporary, exceptionally minimal design built from “really good quality, high end materials with a carefully considered palette, all within a singular colour tone.”
Mineral variation as the detail
In a deliberately narrow colour scheme, texture has to do more work. Zunica specifically points to “wonderful colour differentiation” in the Soft Grey Granite and to the way its natural minerals appear to refract light. That observation explains why a single grey tile can support a large interior: variation occurs within the material, so the room does not depend on added pattern or bright colour.

How the tile links otherwise different rooms
The residence includes highly varied programs: a theatre-like sunken lounge, service spaces, bedrooms, a courtyard-facing living room and a rooftop with a spa and city views. The granite does not make these rooms identical. Instead, it supplies a recurring surface language at points where the house changes use or level.
- Circulation: The stairwell turns the tile into a 12-metre connective element.
- Threshold: At the concealed butler’s-pantry entrance, the stone identifies a transition between the main kitchen and its support space.
- Water-related rooms: Its presence in wet areas extends the material palette into ensuite and utility settings.
- Gathering space: At the living-room hearth, the tile becomes a bench beneath a skylight, giving the mineral surface a place to be occupied rather than merely viewed.
That distribution explains the “striking presence” described in the project feature more convincingly than a claim that the tile is visually strong everywhere. It is encountered at moments of movement, transition, water and gathering—the places where a finish can register as part of the house’s organization.
What is documented, and what is not
The project feature is a supplier-authored account of one completed residence. It is useful for understanding the specified material, locations and design intent, but it is not an independent laboratory assessment or a buyer’s technical guide.

Anyone considering a similar specification should treat those missing items as questions for the tile supplier, architect and installer. The successful appearance of Albert Park House does not, by itself, establish that the same stone, finish or installation method will suit another climate, substrate, wet area or code requirement.
