Senaka Senanayake’s rainforest paintings draw viewers in with vivid colour and crowded detail, then confront them with a question: where are these species and habitats going? His work celebrates the natural world while recording the threat of its disappearance. The two ideas meet in paintings that are lush but not literal maps of any one forest.
What Senanayake’s paintings show
Flowers, birds, butterflies and other rainforest life fill Senanayake’s canvases. In a 2018 profile for Scroll.in, Chanpreet Khurana describes works built from vivid colour and tightly packed natural forms. That abundance is part of the subject: viewers encounter the beauty and variety of life that rainforest loss puts at risk.

The paintings can bring together species from different parts of the world. American hummingbirds might appear alongside butterflies and elephants associated with Asia and Africa. Senanayake says that combining species on one canvas is his artistic licence; the result is not a documentary image of a single ecosystem.
How he works with colour
Senanayake told Khurana that he uses photographs, rather than sketches, as references for flowers, birds and animals. He wants their colours to reflect those found in nature, and he mixes his own colours. He described being frustrated when he cannot reproduce a particular hue.

He credited his understanding of colour to Richard Lytle, whom he learned from at Yale School of Art in the 1970s. As he put it, “The flowers and birds and animals that I paint are as they are in nature.”
Why the paintings are not literal records
The natural forms and colours are grounded in observation, but the compositions are imaginative. When viewers ask whether the scenes are real, Senanayake’s answer, as quoted by Khurana, is: “Yes. This isn’t in my imagination.” He clarified the distinction in the same interview: “The only artistic licence I have taken is to put so many of these species together on one canvas.” The individual subjects refer to nature; their shared setting need not exist in one place.

Beauty alongside rainforest loss
Khurana frames the work as a record of the growing void left by rainforest depletion. Senanayake called that depletion “a global issue,” referring to Brazil as well as Sri Lanka. The paintings do not rely on scenes of destruction to make the point: their profusion of life gives viewers something to value, while its threatened habitat lends the colour urgency.
The 2018 feature attributes to Senanayake a claim that about 70% of Sri Lanka’s rainforests had been cut down for coconut cultivation and tea and rubber plantations. It also repeats an unidentified estimate that 80,000 acres of tropical rainforest and 135 plant, animal and insect species were lost worldwide each day. The article does not name the organization behind that global estimate or provide its year. These are claims reported in 2018, not verified current measurements.

Celebration rather than direct protest
Conor Macklin, then identified by Khurana as director of London’s Grosvenor Gallery, characterized Senanayake’s approach this way: “He doesn’t get bogged down by the politics. His art is about celebration rather than criticism.” The distinction helps explain how the paintings hold together their two purposes: they offer the pleasure of colour and natural abundance, while prompting questions such as “Where can I see this [in nature]?” and “where are the rainforests?”
The exhibition behind the 2018 profile
The feature covered Mystical Moments, a solo exhibition of 17 oil-on-canvas works at SaffronArt, The Claridges, in New Delhi. It was on view through January 24, 2018; that date is historical, not an indication that the exhibition remains open.
