Warmth usually makes a glow stick shine brighter for the moment, but it also makes its glow run out sooner. Cold slows the light-producing reaction, so the stick looks dimmer while its remaining glow lasts longer. Warming a cooled stick can make it brighter again if reactants remain.
Why does temperature change a glow stick’s brightness?
A typical glow stick contains an oxalate compound and fluorescent dye in one solution, plus hydrogen peroxide sealed in a small glass ampoule. Bending the stick breaks the ampoule and mixes the liquids. The resulting chemical reaction transfers energy to the dye, whose excited molecules release some of that energy as visible light. This light-producing process is called chemiluminescence.

Temperature affects how quickly the reaction proceeds. In warmer conditions, it runs faster and produces stronger light at that moment. In colder conditions, it runs more slowly, producing a fainter glow. The relationship is about reaction rate, not a temperature switch that turns the stick on or off. Brightness and glow time are a trade-off

These are qualitative directions, not a universal prediction. The result depends on the particular stick and the temperatures involved; the cited sources do not establish a standard brightness ratio, temperature threshold, or duration multiplier.

How to compare cold, warm, and room-temperature glow sticks
A fair demonstration compares similar sticks while keeping other conditions as consistent as practical. The American Chemical Society’s Slow the Glow activity recommends comparing cold and hot sticks with a room-temperature control.
- Prepare similar conditions. Set up cold, warm, and room-temperature conditions. Water-filled cups and a thermometer can help show and record the conditions. The sources do not prescribe one mandatory temperature range.
- Use comparable sticks. Activate similar glow sticks in the same way, and give each one similar time to reach its test condition.
- Compare them together. View the sticks under the same lighting and from the same distance. Compare brightness rather than relying on memory of how one looked earlier.
- Try the reversible change. Move a cooled sample into warm water and watch for its remaining glow to become more visible. The Royal Society of Chemistry describes dipping a lidded sample vial into an ice bath and then warm water: “the glow will diminish and return accordingly.” — Declan Fleming, author, Education in Chemistry, 2019. What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
- You should see the warm stick appear brighter than the cold one under otherwise similar viewing conditions.
- The colder stick may remain visibly glowing longer because its reaction is slower.
- Warming a cooled stick can reveal light from reactants that have not yet been used up; it cannot restore reactants already consumed.
- A classroom comparison demonstrates the direction of the effect, not an exact number of times brighter or longer-lasting a stick will be.
