In his Architectural Record article published November 11, 2024, Edward Mazria, FAIA, introduces 11 new Swatches for the Palette. They are strategy prompts—not construction details, product endorsements, cost estimates, or proof that any approach will work on every site. Their value is in helping a project team match the scale of an intervention to the hazard and community need it must address.

The Palette is a free, interactive strategy resource from Architecture 2030. It organizes principles for creating low-carbon, climate-resilient places and presents them as practical design directions. The new Swatches broaden that menu from ecological restoration and water management to urban form, building energy, material circularity, and the reuse of existing structures.

A Swatch is not a specification. The Architectural Record overview does not provide engineering calculations, local hazard maps, bills of quantities, product comparisons, installation instructions, or measured performance for a particular project. A team still needs site investigations, climate and flood data, ecological advice, code review, community engagement, and appropriately licensed design professionals before selecting or combining an approach.
The count matters in a precise way: 11 new Swatches — Architecture 2030 Palette, 2024. It records the number of additions described by Architectural Record; it is not a success rate, emissions reduction figure, or guarantee of resilience.
The 11 new Swatches, organized by the problem they address
The strategies overlap, but grouping them by primary purpose makes their differences easier to see. A neighborhood may use several at once—for example, a compact urban pattern, sponge-city streets, building-integrated solar, and a reuse-first building policy.
Nature-based water and habitat strategies
Sponge City
A Sponge City uses green space and water-absorbing features to slow, store, filter, and reuse rainfall. Examples named in the article include permeable pavement, rain gardens, green roofs, and wetlands. Intended benefits include improved water quality, groundwater support, biodiversity, and cooling, alongside reduced pressure on drainage systems. The appropriate combination depends on soil, slope, groundwater, rainfall intensity, maintenance capacity, and downstream conditions; a permeable surface alone is not a universal flood solution.

Coastal Seaforestation Drawdown
This approach restores or expands marine vegetation such as kelp forests and seagrass meadows. The Palette presents it as both a carbon-storage measure and a coastal-resilience strategy. Any real proposal would need marine ecological assessment, water-quality information, navigation and fisheries considerations, and governance of coastal waters. The article does not quantify carbon uptake or shoreline protection for a specific restoration project.
Habitat Health and Carbon Sequestration
Healthier landscapes can support habitat while storing carbon. The Swatch emphasizes native planting, reduced chemical inputs, and natural processes rather than a highly managed landscape that depends on continuous external inputs. Plant selection must reflect local ecology and future climate conditions; “native” is a regional designation, not a single universal plant list.
Afforestation
Afforestation means establishing forest on land that was not previously forested. The Palette associates it with ecological improvement, carbon storage, erosion control, and community objectives. Before planting, planners must check whether the land historically supported forest, how trees will affect water availability and fire risk, and who will manage the site over decades. Planting trees where naturally open ecosystems belong can damage habitat, so land history and ecology are essential.
Urban Gardens
Community plots and rooftop farms connect food production with food access, air quality, social benefits, and heat mitigation. Their performance depends on soil or growing-medium safety, irrigation, structural capacity for roofs, stewardship, and equitable access. A garden is infrastructure as well as an amenity: its water source, maintenance plan, and long-term ownership should be decided before construction.

Water-Smart Landscapes and Systems
This Swatch combines xeriscaping, rainwater harvesting, and drought-resistant plants to respond to water scarcity and changing precipitation. A rain barrel is one possible household-scale implementation of rainwater harvesting, but storage volume, overflow routing, mosquito control, structural support, and local plumbing or public-health rules vary. The article supplies no product specification or performance comparison, so a barrel should not be treated as a guaranteed fit for every site.
Regenerative Peri-Urban Agriculture
Regenerative agriculture around cities aims to restore soil and biodiversity while producing food and reducing external inputs. It can connect farms, urban food systems, habitat corridors, and stormwater management. Decisions must account for land tenure, contamination, irrigation, logistics, labor, and the risk that development pressure will displace productive farmland. “Regenerative” describes an intended practice direction, not a quantified outcome established by the Architectural Record article.
Urban form and building systems
15-Minute City
A 15-minute city organizes compact, mixed-use neighborhoods so everyday needs are reachable by a short walk or bicycle trip. The intended results are less car dependence and stronger local activity. Applying the idea requires more than drawing a radius: housing, schools, health care, shops, public space, safe crossings, transit, and access for people with disabilities must be distributed and connected. Travel time should be tested for actual routes, not just straight-line distance.

Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV)
BIPV incorporates solar generation into the building envelope, either in new construction or retrofit. Roofs, façades, or other envelope elements may be designed as part of the generating system rather than adding separate panels later. The article does not compare technologies or set electrical, structural, fire, shading, maintenance, or interconnection requirements. Those questions require a project-specific energy and envelope design.

Circularity and existing buildings
Planning and Design for Disassembly
Design for disassembly plans buildings, landscapes, and infrastructure so components can be taken apart and reused instead of demolished into mixed waste. Reversible connections, accessible layers, material inventories, and clear ownership records can make future recovery more realistic. The strategy affects decisions from structural grids to finishes, but the Palette does not prescribe a particular connection system or calculate avoided waste.
Reuse, Adapt, Renovate, and Restore Buildings
Keeping an existing building in service can extend its useful life, improve energy efficiency and resilience, reduce emissions associated with replacement, and preserve cultural assets. A reuse-first study should examine structural condition, moisture, indoor air quality, accessibility, fire safety, operational energy, flood or heat exposure, and the building’s significance to its community. Restoration is not automatically the lowest-carbon option; the result depends on what is retained, what must be replaced, and how the building will perform after work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a Swatch for a real project
The 11 strategies are not interchangeable products. Start with the dominant risk and the scale at which a decision can change it.
| Primary decision scale | Typical problem | Relevant Swatches | Information needed before design |
|---|---|---|---|
| Region or coastline | Habitat loss, erosion, carbon storage, food security | Coastal Seaforestation Drawdown; Afforestation; Regenerative Peri-Urban Agriculture | Ecology, land history, coastal processes, tenure, governance |
| City or neighborhood | Heat, car dependence, unequal access, stormwater peaks | 15-Minute City; Sponge City; Urban Gardens | Travel patterns, drainage capacity, heat exposure, access and equity data |
| Site or landscape | Water scarcity, runoff, habitat fragmentation | Water-Smart Landscapes and Systems; Habitat Health and Carbon Sequestration | Soils, rainfall, water rules, native ecology, maintenance resources |
| Building envelope and energy | Operational emissions, heat, power resilience | Building-Integrated Photovoltaics | Solar access, structure, fire and electrical codes, envelope condition, utility constraints |
| Building life cycle | Material waste, demolition emissions, loss of usable space | Planning and Design for Disassembly; Reuse, Adapt, Renovate, and Restore Buildings | Condition survey, material records, future adaptability, heritage and code requirements |
Use the table as a scoping aid, not a ranking. A flood-prone neighborhood may need Sponge City measures, but the best locations and capacities come from hydrologic analysis. A reuse project may reduce material demand, yet an unsafe or repeatedly flooded structure may require a different intervention. The correct choice follows local evidence.

A practical workflow from risk to implementation
- Define the decision and time horizon. State whether the project concerns a street, watershed, neighborhood, building, landscape, or material system, and whether it must perform over a decade, a building life, or several generations.
- Map present and future hazards. Review heat, flooding, drought, wildfire, coastal change, storm intensity, water supply, and ecological stress relevant to the location. Identify who is most exposed and who controls the land or infrastructure.
- Set measurable project objectives. Examples include keeping critical routes passable during heavy rain, reducing potable-water demand, preserving an existing structure, or improving access to daily services. Objectives should be testable without pretending that the Swatch itself supplies a performance number.
- Select a primary Swatch and supporting actions. Choose the strategy that addresses the dominant risk at the appropriate scale, then add complementary measures. Avoid selecting a fashionable intervention that does not match site conditions.
- Check feasibility and unintended effects. Test drainage, soil, structure, fire safety, accessibility, maintenance, utility connections, ecological impacts, and legal requirements. Consider who pays, who maintains the asset, and who benefits.
- Design for operation and change. Assign inspection, watering, cleaning, replacement, data collection, and emergency responsibilities. For disassembly or reuse, retain material information so future teams can act on the original intent.
- Monitor and revise. Track the indicators that match the objective—such as water levels, plant survival, travel access, energy production, or retained floor area—and adjust the design when evidence shows a problem.
Where the strategies can fail
Choosing a generic solution for a local hazard
A green roof, rain garden, tree-planting scheme, or solar façade can be valuable, but none is automatically suitable. Soil depth, drainage, drought, wind, wildfire exposure, shade, structural capacity, and maintenance can reverse the intended benefit. Treat the Palette as a prompt to investigate, not as a substitute for engineering.
Counting installation instead of performance
Installing a stated feature does not prove that a city is resilient or low-carbon. A rain garden that is disconnected from runoff, a garden without a steward, or a reused building that remains dangerously hot may fail its objective. Define the expected function and verify it after occupancy or planting.
Ignoring distributional effects
Compact development, waterfront restoration, urban agriculture, and green improvements can change land values and access. Include residents, workers, indigenous or customary land users where relevant, and people with disabilities in decisions. A resilience project that displaces vulnerable users has not solved the underlying risk equitably.
Underestimating maintenance and governance
Living systems need care; water systems need inspection; photovoltaic and envelope components need safe access; reused buildings need clear operational responsibility. Budgeting only for construction creates fragile projects. Assign the responsible organization and funding source before approval.
What the article establishes—and what remains project-specific
Architectural Record’s November 11, 2024 overview establishes the 11-Swatch addition and describes the intended roles of the strategies. It does not report a named study statistic, a project-level emissions reduction, a universal cost, or a product’s suitability. Those absences matter when a team moves from inspiration to procurement or permitting.
The strongest conclusion is therefore methodological: climate adaptation and emissions reduction should be coordinated across ecological systems, urban form, buildings, and materials. The Palette helps a team see those connections early, while local evidence and professional design determine what can actually be built and maintained.
Mazria’s concluding line captures the urgency without claiming a measured result: “The urgency of the global climate situation demands accelerated action—the tools and strategies are available, and the time to implement them is now.”
