A water-damage emergency moved this small en suite remodel forward, but the owner used the disruption to solve a more interesting design problem: how to combine 1920s and 1960s references, French and Italian details, and Hollywood Regency polish with modern storage and fixtures—without moving a single wall. The brief: repair the room, keep the footprint, add character
The renovation began earlier than planned after a water-damage incident. Lauren, the project author, says the bathroom was already small and that the remodel did not expand its footprint. That is a description of one homeowner’s project, not a measured design rule. The useful lesson is the way each choice addresses a specific constraint: warmth offsets pale surfaces, clear glass reduces visual interruption, and decorative elements are concentrated where they can be seen without consuming floor area.
How the palette creates warmth in a small room
Light walls and porcelain tile keep the room bright, while a mid-tone wood vanity prevents the space from feeling stark or overly clinical. Brushed-gold hardware and fixtures continue that warmth. Material decisions: marble appearance with a different maintenance plan
The shower uses polished marble-look porcelain selected because Lauren wanted the brightness and veining associated with marble without the maintenance she associated with real stone. She also says the porcelain was cheaper to buy and install than real marble. Those are the project owner’s reasons, not the result of a controlled comparison or a universal price promise.

The backsplash is a particularly efficient vintage gesture. A scalloped profile supplies a decorative silhouette at the vanity, while the remnant approach avoids paying for a full slab. Because the source does not provide the marble type, remnant size, or treatment specifications, those details should be confirmed with the fabricator before using the same strategy.
The compact shower: openness without adding square footage
The old surround was removed and the existing shower was tiled rather than enlarged. A clear glass door lets the eye travel through the enclosure, which Lauren says helps both the bathroom and the shower feel larger. In a small room, an opaque or heavily framed enclosure would create a stronger visual stop at the shower edge.
The niches sit on the wall to the right of the door, so they are not the first feature seen on entry. Their backs use the same polished hexagon tile selected for the niche detail. That placement hides bottles from the initial sightline while keeping everyday items within reach.
Lauren also reports that she enjoys the shower’s warmer, cozier feeling. That is a personal response, not evidence that a compact shower is more comfortable for every household. Taller users, people who need a seat, or families sharing the room may have different requirements. The project’s lesson is to make the existing size feel intentional rather than apologetic: use continuous tile, reduce visual barriers, and locate functional clutter where it is less conspicuous.

Fixtures chosen for daily tasks
Handheld shower with slide bar
The shower uses a Delta Trinsic kit in Champagne Bronze with a handheld sprayer and slide bar. Lauren says the handheld makes cleaning the tile and glass easier. A slide bar also allows the spray height to be adjusted, although the project account does not specify a particular height range or installation measurement.
Wall-mounted sink faucets
Wall-mounted Trinsic sink faucets support the clean-lined look and, in Lauren’s expectation, reduce the amount of water that collects on the countertop compared with a standard deck-mounted faucet. That benefit depends on the spout reach, basin shape, installation angle, and how the sink is used; it should be checked against the selected basin before rough-in.
Mirrors and sconces
The original plan called for black arched mirrors, but the available options felt too tight for the room and suitable mirrors were difficult to find in stock. Venetian mirrors became the solution. Each mirror has its own shaded sconce beside it.
Lauren prefers side lighting because she feels it lights faces with fewer shadows than fixtures mounted above mirrors and gives a softer quality for makeup. The bathroom also has a recessed light/fan in the shower area intended to provide illumination and manage humidity. The project does not state the fan’s capacity, electrical specification, or control arrangement, so those decisions require local code review and an electrician’s installation plan.
Picture-frame molding adds detail without tiling every wall
Rather than tile the bathroom walls from floor to ceiling, the project uses picture-frame molding. Lauren says this avoided the additional expense of more tile. She also feels the vertical lines draw the eye upward and make the ceiling seem taller.

For a painting-focused remodel, molding creates a clear opportunity to layer color and sheen without introducing another hard surface. First repair and dry any water-damaged substrate, then ensure the wall is sound and clean before priming and painting. Keep the molding profile, caulk lines, and corners crisp; decorative trim reads as intentional only when the transitions are neat. The account does not identify the paint products, color, or sheen, so do not treat any particular white or neutral as part of the original specification.
Measure the trim layout against outlets, switches, mirrors, and the vanity before cutting. In a small room, a panel that terminates awkwardly behind a fixture can be more noticeable than a simpler layout. The project’s approach is valuable precisely because the molding is coordinated with the room’s focal points rather than spread indiscriminately.
Storage that stays visible but controlled
The room uses shelves for small toiletries, with apothecary jars and bins grouping loose items. A double hamper sorts dirty clothes while blending with the light walls. These are modest interventions, but they keep the vanity and shower from carrying every storage task.

A practical sequence for recreating the approach
- Document the existing room after the water issue is resolved. Confirm that the source of damage is repaired and that walls, floor, and framing are suitable for new finishes. The original project account does not provide a drying timetable or construction specification.
- Freeze the footprint before shopping. Draw the existing walls, door swing, plumbing points, vanity, shower, and electrical locations. The project’s character comes from finish coordination, not from adding area.
- Set the palette with full-size samples. Place the wood tone, porcelain, metal finish, backsplash material, and prospective wall paint together under the room’s actual lighting.
- Choose the shower surface and grout as a system. Confirm tile dimensions, niche geometry, herringbone layout, transitions, and grout color before ordering. The original room uses 12×24-inch Statuary polished porcelain, polished hexagons in the niches, 4×16-inch herringbone floor tile, and Timberwolf gray grout.
- Plan sightlines. Position the clear glass, niches, mirrors, sconces, and molding so the first view into the room is calm and the storage is useful without dominating the entry.
- Rough-in plumbing and electrical before decorative work. Wall-mounted faucets, the handheld slide bar, sconces, and the shower light/fan all need coordinated locations. Have licensed trades verify code requirements for wet-area electrical work and ventilation.
- Install trim and prepare for paint. Fit the picture-frame molding, fill and sand joints, caulk appropriate gaps, prime repaired areas, and apply the selected wall and trim finishes according to their manufacturers’ instructions.

Modern vintage is a flexible design label
A separate renovation listing dated May 21, 2026, shows how differently the phrase can be interpreted. The 1890-home bathroom in Guelph combines black-and-white patterned floor tile, an arched mirror, classic sconces, a custom white vanity, and contemporary shower fittings. It is not the same project, and it does not establish a required palette or fixture set. It does demonstrate that “modern vintage” can describe both Lauren’s warm wood-and-muted-gold room and a higher-contrast black-and-white scheme.

The wood vanity supplies depth against pale surfaces, muted gold repeats the warmth, porcelain delivers a marble reference without the owner’s expected stone-maintenance burden, and the remnant backsplash adds a one-of-a-kind edge. Clear glass and less-visible niches protect the sightline through the compact shower. For a small bathroom remodel, that is the transferable strategy: keep the footprint if it works, spend detail where it will be seen, and make every decorative decision support a practical one.
