You can print a large sphere on an FDM printer without support material by making it from two interlocking, hollow C-shaped shells and printing each in vase mode. DaveMakesStuff’s Giant Spiralized Sphere is about 25 cm across and is reported to use roughly 220 g of filament. It is a lightweight decorative object—not a precision ball or a load-bearing part—and its success depends on the shape and a careful first layer, not just a slicer setting.

Why a sphere is difficult to print in one piece

A conventional sphere starts with a small footprint, widens toward its equator, then narrows again. Above the widest point, each new layer extends farther inward than the one below it. Those increasingly steep overhangs can sag unless the slicer adds supports or the model is redesigned. A one-piece sphere may also need a flat bottom, a raft, or a carefully chosen orientation.

Splitting a sphere into two ordinary hemispheres can make printing easier, but it does not automatically produce the continuous thin wall that vase mode needs. The featured design instead uses two curved, interlocking C-shaped shells—visually reminiscent of the two sides of a tennis ball. Each shell can be printed as a spiralized wall, then fitted to its partner to form the sphere. The geometry is the clever part: vase mode alone cannot make an unsuitable shape printable.

What vase mode does—and what it does not

Vase mode, also called spiralize or spiralized mode, prints a single outer wall in a continuous rising spiral. It normally omits infill and does not provide the multiple perimeter walls used in ordinary slicing. The result can be quick and filament-efficient, but it is also much lighter and less impact-resistant than a conventional multi-wall print.

The sphere’s ribs help stiffen its thin shell and support the delicate shape during printing and handling. They also create its visible texture. They do not make the print failure-proof: a poor first layer, inconsistent extrusion, a draft, or a bump can still ruin a long print. Nor does the available project information establish a strength rating, watertightness, or suitability for outdoor use.

The model and the printer-space check

The project is DaveMakesStuff’s Giant Spiralized Sphere, documented in Hackaday’s coverage. The designer describes a sphere approximately 25 cm in diameter, made from two parts, with about 220 g of filament used at the referenced size. Treat that material figure as an estimate for the published model, not a guaranteed slicer result: scaling, line width, skirt or brim, purge, and failed attempts all affect actual consumption.

Before printing, inspect each part’s bounding box in your slicer. A 25 cm finished sphere does not necessarily require a 25 cm-wide build plate, because the halves may fit in a different orientation—but a 220 × 220 mm bed may still be too small for a particular part or placement. Check usable X, Y, and Z dimensions, including any brim you plan to add. Also check the model page for current download access and license terms; access may be restricted, and permissions for remixing or commercial use should not be assumed.

Prepare the slicer

  1. Download the two model files and import both into the slicer. Confirm that they are separate parts, correctly oriented as supplied, and not overlapping on the build plate.
  2. Enable the slicer’s vase-mode feature. In Cura, the setting is called Spiralize Outer Contour; other slicers may label it Vase Mode, Spiral Vase, or Spiralize. Names and controls can vary by version.
  3. Use one bottom layer, following the designer’s recommendation. Start at a layer height of 0.2 mm or greater.
  4. Start with a skirt to prime the nozzle and check extrusion. If the part’s footprint does not adhere reliably, try a brim. These are model-specific starting points, not universal profiles.
  5. Preview the sliced toolpath before printing. The shell should rise as a continuous spiral, without unexpected infill, top layers, or disconnected wall behavior. If the preview looks like an ordinary solid part, revisit the vase-mode setting and model suitability before committing filament.
  6. Use a material-appropriate temperature, speed, cooling, and first-layer setup for your printer, nozzle, filament, and slicer. The project does not establish one universal profile or nozzle diameter.

The designer advises watching the first layer closely, avoiding contact with the print, and adjusting seam alignment if stringing appears near the top. A seam-position change can make a defect less visible, but it does not replace tuning: damp filament or excessive temperature can also increase stringing, and retraction behavior may be limited or altered in spiral mode.

Choosing filament

PLA is a sensible first choice for an ornamental sphere because it is generally straightforward to print. Translucent PLA or PETG can be appealing if you want to illuminate the shell, while multicolor filament can emphasize the ribbing. Translucent filament will not necessarily look uniformly clear: layer lines, ribs, extrusion width, and the light source all affect its appearance.

PETG can take more tuning than PLA, including attention to stringing, adhesion, and temperature. Hackaday discusses higher-temperature printing and overextrusion as factors in the appearance and bonding of transparent PETG; that is not a guaranteed profile for every brand or printer. Use the filament maker’s guidance as a starting point and test your setup. Do not treat this design as a certified lampshade: if adding illumination, choose a low-heat battery-powered LED and keep it away from hot components. The cited project does not establish electrical or heat-safety ratings.

Print carefully and respond to problems early

Once the first layer is established, leave the printer undisturbed. The shell and ribs are delicate while they rise; a bump or loose cable can knock the part loose, bend a rib, or put the nozzle into the wall. Secure the printer, check that cables cannot snag, and avoid touching the machine unnecessarily.

  • If a part starts lifting: Stop before the nozzle catches the loose shell. Clean and re-level the build surface, check first-layer squish, and consider lowering first-layer speed or using a brim on the next attempt. Reduce drafts and temperature swings. There is no single bed temperature that suits every material and printer.
  • If the nozzle catches a rib or wall: Pause or stop the print and inspect for a lifted edge, warping, or a displaced part. Continuing can turn a small defect into a collision or a detached shell.
  • If stringing collects near the top: Check filament dryness and temperature, then try a different seam alignment if the slicer exposes that control. Seam placement may hide marks rather than remove their cause.
  • If a half will not fit or the joint is poor after scaling: Recheck the slicer dimensions and orientation. Scaling changes the footprint, print time, rib thickness, and fit tolerances; the original 220 g estimate no longer applies. Very small scales can make ribs or the joint impractically thin or tight.
  • If the shell seems too fragile: Do not assume that simply scaling up will help; a larger thin shell can be more difficult to handle. A wider line may add material if compatible with the geometry, but if you need substantial strength, choose a conventional multi-wall design instead.

Fit and finish the two halves

Dry-fit the pieces first and decide whether you want the sphere to come apart. A loose fit is quick and reversible, useful for storage or transport, but may show a seam or allow the halves to separate. For a permanent assembly, the designer recommends cyanoacrylate (CA) glue. Align the parts before applying adhesive; use a small amount, preferably from inside the joint where possible. Too much CA can leave visible residue or whitening, especially on translucent filament.

For a cleaner result, you can add a narrow internal adhesive bead, lightly sand the seam without thinning the shell, or paint after assembly. In a custom remix, a keyed joint or interlocking lip may improve alignment, but confirm that the revised geometry still slices correctly in vase mode. The designer describes the glued sphere as surprisingly strong; that is an informal project observation, not a measured strength specification.

When this approach makes sense

This is a good technique for ornaments, lightweight décor, and a ribbed or illuminated-looking sphere when material efficiency and a distinctive surface matter more than ruggedness. It is a poor choice for a ball expected to bounce predictably, a bearing or calibration sphere, a pressure-bearing container, or anything that needs thick walls, a smooth seamless finish, or a tested load rating.

For a sturdier or smoother object, print conventional hemispheres and join them; that allows thicker walls and internal features, though the seam needs finishing and some designs may need supports. A supported one-piece print may suit geometry that cannot be redesigned as spiralized shells, at the cost of support removal, extra material, and possible surface marks. Faceted, geodesic, ring-built, or multi-panel constructions are other ways to avoid difficult overhangs, usually with a different appearance. Resin printing is another route to a smooth surface, but it brings different support, orientation, washing, curing, and resin-handling requirements.

The support-free result comes from pairing a print-friendly C-shaped design with a single-wall spiral toolpath. If your priority is a lightweight decorative sphere and your printer can reliably handle the parts, it is an efficient, visually striking project. If you need a functional ball, choose a construction built for that job.
