The safest Alzheimer’s-accommodating home is familiar, well lit, uncluttered and adapted to the person’s current abilities. Start by clearing walking routes and securing obvious hazards, then address cooking, bathing, medication, exits and fire safety. Reassess regularly: Alzheimer’s can alter judgment, orientation, behavior, balance and sensory perception, so a change that is helpful now may be inadequate or unnecessarily restrictive later.

The Alzheimer’s Association’s guiding principle is that “The home should encourage independence and social interaction.” The goal is support—not a house that feels like a locked facility. Use the least restrictive change that addresses a specific risk, introduce equipment early enough for it to become familiar, and obtain professional advice when a modification involves transfers, wiring, plumbing or structural work.

Why an Alzheimer’s home needs regular reassessment

Safety needs do not follow one permanent checklist. A person may initially manage a familiar kitchen but later forget a burner, misread a cleaning product or lose balance on a previously manageable step. The Alzheimer’s Association identifies judgment, sense of time and place, behavior, physical ability and the senses as factors that can affect home safety. Review the home after a fall, near miss, medication change, hospitalization, new wandering behavior or noticeable decline. Read the Association’s current guidance at Home Safety and use its Home Safety Checklist (revised August 2025) as a prompt, not as a substitute for judgment.

Perform a room-by-room safety walk-through

Walk through the house at the person’s usual times of day, including dusk and nighttime. View each route from their eye level and ask what could confuse, distract, trip or burn them. Check both the hazard and the task: getting from bed to the toilet, making a drink, answering the door and finding a coat may each need a different solution.

  • FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
  1. Map essential routes. Note paths between the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living area and exits. Mark dim transitions, stairs, thresholds and places where furniture narrows the route.
  2. Look for reachable hazards. Identify medicines, chemicals, tools, ladders, cords, hot appliances, firearms and small objects that could be swallowed or mistaken for food.
  3. Test visibility and contrast. Replace failed bulbs, reduce glare and check whether the toilet, shower controls, door handles and stair edges stand out from their backgrounds.
  4. Check stability. Try chairs, bookcases, cabinets and televisions for wobble or tipping. Confirm that handrails and grab bars are properly anchored rather than merely tight.
  5. Ask what preserves independence. A labeled cupboard, automatic shutoff or accessible seat may let the person continue a task safely; removing the task entirely may cause frustration and less activity.
  6. Write a short action list. Fix urgent trip, fire and poisoning risks first. Schedule changes that need an installer, and record who will check each item.

Clear pathways and improve lighting throughout the home

Remove throw rugs, extension cords crossing walkways and excess clutter. Keep frequently used routes wide enough for the person’s gait, cane, walker or another mobility aid. Secure or remove low furniture that creates a sharp corner at a turning point. Fasten bookcases, cabinets and large televisions to prevent tipping. Chairs with armrests can provide leverage when sitting down or standing up.

Use even light at entrances, landings, stairs, room transitions and the route to the bathroom. A bright fixture in one room does not correct a dark threshold between rooms; light the transition itself. Add night lights in hallways, bedrooms and bathrooms. Motion-sensor night lights can illuminate a route without requiring the person to find a switch, but they are navigation aids, not proof against falls.

Make important rooms easier to identify. A simple word-and-picture sign on the bathroom door can help someone who cannot retrieve the room name. The Alzheimer’s Society gives “toilet” with a picture as an example. Leaving the bathroom door open when appropriate, using contrasting toilet seats or grab bars and choosing handles that stand out from the door can reduce visual searching. See the Alzheimer’s Society’s equipment guidance for examples of cues and adaptations.

Make the kitchen safer without removing useful routines

Control heat and cooking equipment

Automatic shutoff appliances can reduce the consequence of a forgotten burner. For an existing stove, options include knob covers, removing knobs when the stove is not in use or turning off the gas supply when it is not being used. These choices differ in how much independent cooking remains possible. A person who can safely prepare a cold meal may not safely use a gas flame; match the restriction to the demonstrated risk.

Other measures described by the Alzheimer’s Society include plug timers and locking cooker valves for gas cookers. A timer can prevent an appliance from running indefinitely, but it still requires a suitable appliance and a setup the person understands. Have a qualified professional handle gas or electrical work.

Reduce confusion around food and supplies

Keep medicines, supplements, seasonings and other non-food items off counters and tables where they could be mistaken for ingredients. Remove decorative fruit and toxic plants that resemble food. Store food in clear, labeled containers if that helps recognition, and use high-contrast plates, cups or utensils when pale items disappear against a pale surface. Put commonly used items at an accessible height and lock away sharp tools or equipment that the person can no longer use safely.

Adapt the bathroom and the nighttime route

Bathrooms combine water, hard surfaces, transfers and limited space. Install properly anchored grab bars at the shower, tub and toilet. A grab rail may help with toilet access, but towel bars are not designed to bear body weight. Use textured stickers or non-slip mats on slippery surfaces, and consider whether a walk-in shower would make entry and bathing easier. A professional should assess wall strength, bar placement and the person’s transfer technique when there is uncertainty.

Set hot water to 120°F (49°C) or less, the limit specified in the Alzheimer’s Association checklist. Test the water where the person would actually touch it; a safe heater setting does not remove every scald risk. Keep razors, hair tools, electrical devices and cleaning products secured when they present a hazard.

Use a visible toilet sign, contrasting fittings and a night light or motion-sensor light on the bedroom-to-bathroom route. These changes support way-finding and visibility; no single mat, bar or light guarantees that a fall will not occur. Keep the route free of laundry baskets, cords and slippers.

Lock and organize medicines, chemicals and weapons

Medication and supplements

Store prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements in a locked drawer or cabinet when the person may take an unsafe dose, combine products or mistake pills for food. An organizer or daily checklist is useful only when it fits the caregiver’s dispensing process; it is not a substitute for supervision if doses are being missed or repeated. Keep the medication list current and review it with the prescribing clinician or pharmacist.

Cleaning products, tools and fuels

Keep cleaners and laundry chemicals in their original containers behind a lock. Do not decant bleach or detergent into food or drink bottles. Limit access to tools, lawn equipment, ladders, gasoline, paint thinner and other hazardous materials in garages, basements and work areas. Close and lock doors to these spaces when they are not in use.

Firearms and ammunition

The Alzheimer’s Association advises considering removal of firearms or storing them in a locked cabinet. MedlinePlus recommends securing weapons and storing ammunition separately. Treat access as a household safety decision: remove firearms from the home when appropriate, or use locked storage that the person cannot open. Read MedlinePlus guidance on keeping a person with dementia safe at home for additional safety reminders.

Fire and carbon-monoxide protection

Maintain working smoke alarms, carbon-monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers. Test devices according to the manufacturer’s instructions and inspect them regularly. The Alzheimer’s Association checklist suggests replacing detector batteries twice a year during daylight-saving-time changes; households in places that do not observe daylight saving time should use a consistent twice-yearly reminder instead. Keep exits clear and make sure everyone in the household knows the evacuation plan.

Reduce wandering risk while preserving dignity

Wandering can happen at any stage. Signs include getting lost in familiar places, trying to “go home” while already at home, pacing, or repeatedly searching for the bathroom or bedroom. The Alzheimer’s Association reports that “Six in 10 people living with dementia will wander at least once; many do so repeatedly.” The statistic appears on its current Wandering guidance; the page does not identify the original study or publication year.

Build a prevention routine

  • Offer meaningful daytime activity and regular movement, and note the times when pacing or exit-seeking is most likely.
  • Address toileting, hunger, thirst, pain, temperature and loneliness before the person becomes distressed.
  • Reassure rather than argue when the person says they need to leave. Redirect to a familiar task or destination.
  • Use clear labels, pictures and night lighting so the bathroom and bedroom are easier to find.
  • Keep coats, keys and bags out of sight when those cues trigger an attempt to leave.

Add notification and exit safeguards

A door-opening alert, warning bell, door monitor or pressure-sensitive mat can notify a caregiver when an exit is opened or crossed. Place exterior deadbolts out of sight and consider visual camouflage only if it does not create a fire-escape hazard. Never lock a person inside the home. An alarm is a notification layer, not supervision and not a guarantee that wandering will stop.

Tell trusted neighbors about the risk, use an identification bracelet or necklace and discuss whether a GPS device is appropriate. Do not leave a person with advanced dementia alone at home. Measures should be proportionate: an alert that wakes a caregiver may be useful at night, while a device that demands constant phone monitoring may fail if nobody can respond.

Prepare for a missing-person emergency

Keep a recent photo and a description of typical clothing and footwear. List nearby hazards such as busy roads, ponds, rail lines or wooded areas. Decide whom to call first, which neighbors can search, and how to provide authorities with medical and identifying information. Begin searching promptly if the person is missing; do not assume they will return on their own.

Make the bedroom and laundry area safer

Place a stable seat near the bed for dressing and shoes. Keep frequently used clothing, glasses, a phone and continence supplies at an accessible height. Monitor electric blankets, heating pads and portable heaters closely because reduced sensation or confusion can lead to burns. Keep cords out of walking routes and turn devices off when unattended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the laundry area, lock detergents and stain removers, add appliance safety locks if needed, clean the lint screen after each load and keep the dryer duct clear. Never allow piles of clothing or paper to accumulate around a dryer or heater. If the person can still fold or sort laundry safely, leave that activity available while restricting only the hazardous steps.

Choose equipment by hazard, burden and independence

There is no evidence in the cited guidance that one brand or model is superior, and the sources do not provide head-to-head injury trials. Compare each option against the actual task and the person’s response.

Option Primary problem addressed Installation and trade-off Caregiver involvement
Grab bars at shower, tub and toilet Transfers and loss of balance Structural anchoring may be required; preserves access when correctly positioned Check fit, attachment and technique; does not eliminate fall risk
Night or motion-sensor lights Dark routes and confusing transitions Usually removable and low disruption; glare or unexpected activation may confuse some people Replace batteries or maintain power and test the route
Door-opening alert or monitor Unnoticed exit attempts Quick to add; depends on a caregiver hearing and responding to the alert Requires reliable response coverage and a backup plan
Stove knob covers, removed knobs or automatic shutoff Forgotten burners and gas or heat exposure Ranges from removable to appliance-level changes; may limit independent cooking Check that the chosen control works and supervise tasks that remain unsafe
Locked medication and chemical storage Overdose, poisoning or unsafe mixing Can be installed in a cabinet or drawer; reduces spontaneous access Caregiver manages keys, codes and dispensing

For major changes, ask about an occupational-therapy home assessment. The Alzheimer’s Society describes an occupational therapist evaluating a home and recommending equipment in a UK account; services, eligibility and funding differ by location, so verify what is available locally.

Roll out changes in manageable stages

  1. Today: Remove rugs and cords, clear routes, lock medicines and chemicals, test alarms, and secure firearms and ammunition.
  2. This week: Add lighting and room labels, secure furniture, review stove controls, set water temperature and establish a wandering response plan.
  3. After observation: Install grab bars or other structural equipment after assessing transfers. Introduce alerts, timers or locks one at a time so you can see whether the person understands them.
  4. At each reassessment: Ask what has become harder, inspect equipment for wear, confirm that caregivers can respond, and remove or revise measures that no longer fit.

Bottom line for an Alzheimer’s-accommodating home

Begin with clear paths, even lighting, stable furniture and locked hazards, then tailor kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and exit protections to the person’s abilities. Preserve familiar tasks wherever the risk can be controlled, introduce equipment before it becomes urgent, and never use locked doors as a substitute for supervision. Regular reassessment—and professional help for structural or complex changes—keeps the home safer without sacrificing dignity or social connection.
