In Illustrator 27.6 and newer, you may be able to add a hyperlink before exporting: select the artwork, open Window > Attributes, choose Image Map > Rectangle, and enter the URL. Adobe Community Manager Anshul Saini described this workflow in 2023; check that your installed version exposes these controls and test the exported PDF. If you need to add or repair a link in an existing PDF, use Acrobat.
Can you add a clickable hyperlink directly in Illustrator?
Illustrator’s Attributes panel has a version-specific image-map workflow for assigning a URL to artwork. According to Adobe Community Manager Anshul Saini, the feature is available in Illustrator 27.6 and newer and can preserve hyperlinks when exporting artwork as PDF. Because this guidance is from Adobe Community rather than a current step-by-step Illustrator Help article, verify the controls in your version and test the result.

Do not confuse this with Illustrator’s Links panel. That panel manages placed graphics and source files, including relinking, updating, embedding, and editing an asset. Those asset-management links are not reader-facing PDF hyperlinks.
Typing a URL as visible text or outlining text does not by itself assign a PDF link action. Also, Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities saves Illustrator data so the PDF can be reopened and edited; Adobe’s PDF options guidance does not identify it as a hyperlink setting.

Add a hyperlink in Illustrator before exporting
- Prepare the artwork. Decide which object or rectangular area should respond to a click. Make the visual cue clear and ensure the intended clickable region aligns with it.
- Open the Attributes panel. Choose Window > Attributes. If the controls are hidden, use the panel menu’s Show All option.
- Select the target object. In Attributes, choose Image Map > Rectangle, then enter the full destination URL in the URL field.
- Save or export as PDF. Adobe documents both File > Save As and File > Export > Export As as PDF creation routes. Select Adobe PDF in the format choice and complete the PDF dialog. Do not assume a particular preset guarantees that links will work in every version or document.
- Test the exported PDF. Open it in a PDF viewer and click the intended area. Check that the destination is correct and the active region matches the design.

Add or repair a hyperlink in Acrobat
If your Illustrator version does not expose the image-map controls, the link did not carry through, or you are working with an existing PDF, Acrobat provides a post-export method.

- Open the PDF in Acrobat and choose Edit.
- Under Add Content, choose More > Link > Add or edit a link.
- Drag a rectangle over the text, button, image, or other area that should be clickable.
- Choose the link appearance and select Open a web page for a website destination.
- Enter the full URL, save the PDF, and test the link in a viewer.
Acrobat also supports actions such as opening a file or navigating to a page view. File links may depend on the reader’s environment, so choose the action that matches your document’s purpose. For details, see Adobe’s Acrobat link instructions.

Does the Illustrator Links panel add a web hyperlink?
No. It manages placed graphics and their source files. Use the Attributes image-map workflow, if available in your version, or add the link in Acrobat.
Does Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities create a hyperlink?
No. Adobe describes it as preserving Illustrator data for reopening and editing the PDF, not as a hyperlink control.
What should I do if the exported PDF link does not work?
Check the URL and click area in the PDF. If the link is absent or needs adjustment, open the PDF in Acrobat and use Edit > Add Content > More > Link > Add or edit a link, then save and test it again.
