To add colored labels, icons, or text to a 3D print, model them as recessed grooves, then fill the cavities with nail polish thinned with acetone. A syringe and needle help place the liquid; acetone on a cotton swab can remove stray polish, and clear acrylic spray paint is the reported final seal. The method was demonstrated by maker FuzzyLogic and described by Arya Voronova for Hackaday on March 14, 2022.
How the recessed-color method works
Instead of painting raised lettering or applying a separate label, this approach uses the printed part itself as a guide: the text or icon is a cavity, and colored polish fills that cavity. Voronova’s Hackaday report describes FuzzyLogic’s demonstration of the technique and its basic CAD steps.

The recess does two jobs: it defines the shape of the mark and holds the fill below the surrounding surface. The polish is thinned with acetone so it can flow into the grooves, then applied with a syringe and needle.
Prepare the model with fill flow in mind
Make the lettering or icon recessed
In the CAD model, create the desired text or icon as a cavity in the surface rather than as raised detail. The demonstration report does not prescribe a particular CAD program, depth, font, or print setting, so those details depend on the design and printer.

Avoid grooves that are too narrow
Leave enough width for the thinned polish to enter and spread through each recess. Voronova specifically notes that surface tension limits how narrow the grooves can be. Very fine lettering may therefore be difficult to fill cleanly with this method; the report gives no minimum groove width.
Fill and finish the printed detail
- Thin the nail polish with acetone. The reported purpose is to make the polish flow into the recessed features. No dilution ratio is specified, so the article does not establish a precise mixture recipe.
- Apply it with a syringe and needle. Dispense the mixture into the grooves, taking care to reach the full shape of each letter or icon. The report does not specify a needle size.
- Clean stray material. Use acetone on a cotton swab to wipe polish from outside the intended recesses, as described in the demonstration.
- Seal the lettering. Apply a coat of clear acrylic spray paint over the filled detail. This is the sealant step reported by Hackaday; no application conditions or performance test are provided.
What the demonstration does—and does not—establish
The article is a report of a specific demonstration, not a controlled comparison or a general materials-compatibility guide. It describes nail polish, acetone, a syringe and needle, cotton-swab cleanup, and clear acrylic spray paint, but does not establish how the method performs on particular print plastics or under wear, washing, heat, or outdoor exposure.

For that reason, treat the result as a finishing approach to try on a suitable sample rather than a proven durable coating for every printed part. The report supplies no optimal mixture, groove dimensions, or verified compatibility recommendations.
