Quilt facing creates a clean edge without the visible strip of traditional binding: fabric strips are sewn to the quilt’s front edge, turned to the back, then hand-stitched in place. It works especially well for art and modern quilts, mini quilts, and some wall hangings where binding would interrupt the design.

Gather supplies and choose a corner method

You will need the quilt, fabric for the facing, clips or pins, matching thread, and a hand-sewing needle. A walking foot can be helpful but is not required. A turning tool can help shape the corners; choose one that is not too sharp so it does not damage the fabric.

Choose how you want to finish the corners before cutting the strips:

  • Overlapping squared corners: Facing strips meet and overlap at the corners to form a squared edge.
  • Corner triangles: Separate folded triangles finish the corners while the side strips stop short of one another. The triangles can remain open as pockets for a hanging dowel.

Strip width depends on the construction method. The Crafty Quilter’s squared-corner example uses 2½-inch strips; the tutorial notes that other methods use 2-inch or 2¼-inch strips. Treat those as method-specific examples, not universal dimensions. Its sample quilt measures 17 by 20 inches; that is the sample’s size, not a required project size. See The Crafty Quilter’s faced-binding tutorial.

Method 1: Make overlapping squared corners

  1. Prepare the quilt edge. Trim all four sides evenly. If needed, leave an extra ¼ inch beyond the design so there is enough fabric for the full ¼-inch seam allowance.
  2. Cut the facing strips. Cut them to the lengths needed for the sides. For the tutorial’s example, the strips are 2½ inches wide; adjust width to suit the method and project.
  3. Sew the strips to the quilt. Place and sew the facing around the quilt edge with a ¼-inch seam allowance.
  4. Reduce corner bulk. Trim the corners carefully without cutting through the stitching.
  5. Press the facing outward. Press it away from the quilt top. Understitching the facing to the seam allowance is optional; it can help the facing roll neatly toward the back.
  6. Turn and press to the back. Fold the facing around the edge. Ease the corners outward gently with a not-too-sharp turning tool, finger-press, then press the edge so the facing does not show on the quilt front.
  7. Hand-stitch the facing down. Clip or pin the folded edge in place and stitch it to the quilt back with a ladder stitch or blind hem stitch. Hand stitching keeps the finishing stitches off the front; machine stitching this folded edge would show there.

Method 2: Add separate corner triangles

  1. Prepare the triangles. Fold a triangle for each corner and baste it to the quilt front. Align its raw edges with the quilt edge and point its folded edge toward the center of the quilt.
  2. Position the side facing strips. Place one strip along each side, stopping short so the strips do not meet or overlap at the corners. This avoids extra bulk where the corner triangles sit.
  3. Sew and trim. Sew the strips and triangles with a ¼-inch seam allowance, then trim excess corner bulk.
  4. Turn and press. Turn the facing to the back and press the edge into place. Optional topstitching close to the front edge can help hold it in position.
  5. Finish the back. Hand-stitch the folded facing edge to the quilt back. The corner triangles do not need to be stitched down; leaving them open creates pockets for a hanging dowel.

Choose the finish that suits the quilt

Choice Best fit Trade-off
Overlapping squared corners A continuous, squared facing edge Facing overlaps at the corners, so trim bulk carefully.
Corner triangles A faced edge with optional open pockets for a hanging dowel Requires separate triangles; leave them unstitched if you want the pockets to remain open.
Understitching Helping the facing roll toward the back in the squared-corner method Optional; it requires an additional line of stitching near the seam allowance.
Topstitching Helping hold the edge in the triangle-corner method Optional and visible near the quilt’s front edge.
