To add supports in Cura, position your model, enable Support in print settings, choose a support type and placement, then slice and inspect the result in Preview before printing. The right choice depends on the geometry and whether the generated support will be stable and accessible for removal.

Quick answer

Load and orient the model, enable Support in Cura’s print settings, choose a support type and placement if those options are available, and click Slice. Inspect the sliced result layer by layer in Preview before printing. Controls and labels can vary with Cura version, printer, and profile.

Start with the narrowest support strategy that reaches the areas needing support. Use Touching Buildplate when support can originate at the build plate; use Everywhere when support must also begin on the model. If the preview shows missing or excessive support, adjust the orientation, placement, overhang angle, or support type and slice again.

What Cura supports are for

FFF printers build each layer on material beneath it. An overhang extending outward without enough material below can sag or fail, so Cura can generate removable support beneath selected regions. UltiMaker’s technical guide describes Cura as detecting regions that need support and including support toolpaths in the print.

Supports are sacrificial structures, not part of the model’s intended shape. After printing, you remove them. They can use material and time, leave contact marks, or be difficult to remove if trapped inside a cavity. Plan for both the surfaces that need support and access for cleanup.

Before enabling support: identify the risky geometry

Look for these features in the model:

  • Overhangs: surfaces extending outward as the part rises through the layers.
  • Flat undersides: horizontal faces without material beneath them.
  • Bridges: spans between supported points; whether they print cleanly depends on the printer and material.
  • Elevated regions: sections that begin above the build plate without a continuous path down to it.
  • Enclosed spaces: internal areas where support may be hard to reach after printing.
  • Visible surfaces: faces where support contact may leave marks.

Consider orientation before adding support. Rotating a part may reduce unsupported regions, though the best orientation depends on the part and print constraints.

Step-by-step: add supports in Cura

1. Load and orient the model

Import the model, place it on the build plate, and consider an orientation that reduces difficult overhangs while keeping any needed support accessible. Cura controls vary by version, printer, and profile. If Support is not visible, search for it in the print settings if your Cura configuration provides that option.

2. Enable Support

In the print settings, enable Support. Available support controls depend on the printer and profile. Leave advanced values at their profile defaults initially, unless you have a specific issue to address.

3. Choose Normal or Tree support

Type Structure and useful situations Tradeoffs to check
Normal Straight, block-like support beneath regions needing support; a conventional choice for many shapes. Can use substantial material and may be difficult to remove, depending on the geometry and settings.
Tree Branches around the print toward regions needing support; may suit irregular or separated overhangs. Inspect branch stability, material use, contact, print time, and removal for the particular model.

UltiMaker’s Cura 5.4 release notes describe updated Tree supports as using more smaller branches and list intended benefits including lower material use, faster printing and slicing, easier removal, and less surface scarring. These are vendor-described goals, not guaranteed results for every model. When in doubt, slice both types and compare their toolpaths in Preview.

4. Choose Support Placement

Touching Buildplate restricts support to structures that start at the build plate. Everywhere also permits support to start on the model, which can reach regions that build-plate-only support cannot. UltiMaker’s guide notes these placement options for Tree support and says placement is also available for Normal support.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and responsive customer support for added peace of mind.

Everywhere can create additional contact against model surfaces and require cleanup. Choose it only when the geometry needs it, and inspect the result for unwanted support or inaccessible areas.

5. Set the overhang threshold

Support Overhang Angle determines which overhangs Cura treats as needing support. Lowering the angle generally generates support on more of the model; raising it generally generates less. UltiMaker says 50 degrees is usually a good starting point, while noting that printer capability depends on settings. Treat it as a starting point, not a universal safe angle.

6. Slice and inspect in Preview

Click Slice, then inspect the sliced toolpaths layer by layer in Preview. Confirm that support appears where intended, contacts the model and build plate as expected, and can be reached for removal. Check that it is not filling a hole or cavity that must remain open. Review estimated time and material use as part of deciding whether the support strategy is suitable.

How to prevent unwanted support

If automatic support appears in a region that does not need it, Cura support blockers can exclude selected areas in versions and configurations that provide them. After using a blocker, slice again and verify that required support remains.

  1. Slice with support enabled.
  2. Inspect Preview for unnecessary or inaccessible support.
  3. Add a support blocker over the region to exclude, if available.
  4. Slice again.
  5. Check that the blocker has not removed support from a region that needs it.

Removing supports after printing

Remove support gradually, taking care not to damage thin model walls. UltiMaker’s S8 user manual mentions pliers for snapping off larger sections and cutting pliers for breaking supports into smaller pieces. Tools are optional cleanup aids; choose ones appropriate to the part and take care when cutting brittle material.

A 3D printer support removal tool kit may help with cleanup, but no particular kit is required to add supports in Cura.

Advanced option: soluble support

Water-soluble materials such as PVA can be used for some support workflows, including cases where conventional supports would be difficult to remove. UltiMaker’s technical guide describes soluble support as an option for compatible setups. This requires suitable printer, extruder, material, and print-design compatibility; it is not necessary for ordinary single-material supports. Follow the printer and material manufacturer’s guidance.

Support troubleshooting

Symptom What to investigate
Overhang sags or lacks support Check orientation, placement, support type, and overhang angle; slice again and inspect Preview.
Too much support appears Consider orientation, a higher overhang angle, or a blocker if available; verify the result in Preview.
Support is difficult to remove Check access, support type, and contact areas; consider a different orientation or compatible soluble-support workflow.
Support appears in a hole or cavity Consider orientation, build-plate-only placement if it still reaches the required areas, or a support blocker if available.

These are diagnostic directions, not guaranteed fixes. The suitable settings depend on the geometry, printer, and material, so make a change and inspect the resulting toolpaths before printing.

A dependable Cura support workflow

  1. Orient the model with overhangs and support removal in mind.
  2. Enable Support in print settings.
  3. Choose Normal or Tree if those options are available, considering the model’s shape and cleanup needs.
  4. Choose Touching Buildplate unless support needs to start on the model.
  5. Set the overhang threshold conservatively for the printer and material.
  6. Slice and inspect Preview layer by layer.
  7. Adjust placement, angle, orientation, or support type if needed, then slice and inspect again.
  8. Confirm support can be removed and does not block features that must remain open.

Should I use Normal or Tree supports in Cura?

Normal uses a block-like structure, while Tree branches toward regions needing support. The better choice depends on geometry, material and time, contact marks, and removal access. Compare the sliced results in Preview.

What is the difference between Touching Buildplate and Everywhere?

Touching Buildplate restricts support to structures starting at the build plate. Everywhere also allows support to start on the model, potentially reaching more regions but adding contact that may need cleanup.

What Support Overhang Angle should I use in Cura?

UltiMaker says 50 degrees is usually a good starting point, but printer capability depends on settings. A lower angle generally creates more support; a higher one creates less. Check Preview and adjust for the particular print.

How can I stop Cura from generating support in a hole?

Consider changing orientation or using a support blocker if available in your Cura setup. Slice again and inspect Preview to ensure the change has not removed support needed elsewhere.

The Bottom Line

Enable Support, select a type and placement suited to the model, and inspect the sliced toolpaths in Preview before printing. Treat angle recommendations as starting points, and confirm that supports reach the intended areas without becoming inaccessible or blocking features.
