To make a Photoshop brush respond to pen pressure, configure the brush in Photoshop and, if needed, tune the pressure curve in your tablet’s driver. For brush size, select the Brush tool, open Window > Brush Settings > Shape Dynamics, and set Size Jitter > Control to Pen Pressure. Pressure settings for size, opacity, and flow are separate, so choose the one that matches the effect you want.

Before you begin

You need a pressure-sensitive tablet, pen display, or compatible stylus; a working manufacturer’s driver; and a brush that supports the dynamic you want to control. Use Photoshop desktop for the steps below. Photoshop on iPad has a separate interface.

  • Open a document and select a paintable layer.
  • Choose the Brush tool with B.
  • For an initial test, choose a basic round brush rather than a textured preset. Presets can have other settings that make pressure changes difficult to see.

Adobe’s tablet guidance is based on Wacom devices and says Adobe does not test or officially support every third-party tablet. With Huion, XP-Pen, or another brand, the Photoshop brush setting is still the key concept, but check the manufacturer’s instructions for driver labels and input options. Make brush size respond to pressure

  1. Select the Brush tool or press B.
  2. Open Window > Brush Settings.
  3. Select Shape Dynamics.
  4. Under Size Jitter, set Control to Pen Pressure.
  5. Draw a few lines with light and then heavier pressure. A successful test should show a thinner stroke under light pressure and a thicker one under heavier pressure.

This is Adobe’s documented path for pressure-sensitive brush size: Shape Dynamics > Size Jitter > Control > Pen Pressure. The size range depends on the brush preset, brush size, minimum-diameter settings, driver curve, and how much pressure you apply; every brush will not show the same degree of variation.

If the stroke width does not change, avoid cycling through presets at random. Use the troubleshooting sequence below to determine whether the brush, driver, or operating-system input path is responsible.

Use pressure for opacity or flow

Opacity and flow are distinct from size. Set the relevant pressure control in the brush dynamics—commonly under Transfer—or use pressure-related options in the Brush tool’s options bar when they are available for your brush and Photoshop version. If you want pressure to change size and opacity, configure both dynamics; selecting Pen Pressure for size does not automatically enable it for opacity.

Attribute What pressure changes Useful test
Size Stroke width: lighter pressure is typically narrower, heavier pressure wider. Draw two lines with visibly different force.
Opacity How opaque the mark can become. Test on a separate layer against a contrasting background.
Flow How quickly paint builds up as the stroke is applied. Make repeated passes and compare how quickly the mark accumulates.

Brush presets and other dynamics affect the visible result. If opacity appears unchanged, check the brush’s Transfer settings and the options-bar controls rather than assuming pressure is absent.

Adjust how hard you need to press

Photoshop’s brush settings determine what pressure changes. The tablet driver determines how the physical force of your hand is translated before Photoshop receives it. On Wacom devices, open Wacom Center or Wacom Tablet Properties, depending on the device and driver generation, select the pen, and find its tip-sensitivity or pressure control. Wacom documents a Tip Sensitivity slider for changing the force needed at the pen tip. Wacom tip-sensitivity controls

  • A softer response registers pressure with less force and makes thick or opaque marks easier to reach, but can make fine control harder.
  • A firmer response gives more room for subtle pressure changes, but light strokes may be harder to produce and prolonged use may feel tiring.

Other manufacturers may call this control tip feel, pressure curve, or something else. Change one setting at a time, then test the same brush again. The Photoshop and driver controls do different jobs, so changing both at once makes it harder to identify what helped.

Fix pressure sensitivity that is not working

Follow this order to isolate the failure. A tablet can send pressure correctly in its driver utility while Photoshop’s selected brush ignores it, and an application can use a different input path from another drawing program.

  1. Confirm the brush setting. For width, check Window > Brush Settings > Shape Dynamics > Size Jitter > Control > Pen Pressure. For opacity or flow, check the corresponding dynamic.
  2. Test a basic round brush. This rules out a preset whose other dynamics obscure the effect.
  3. Restart Photoshop. This is especially useful after changing driver settings.
  4. Test the pen in the manufacturer’s settings or diagnostic utility. If pressure is missing there too, focus on the tablet, connection, or driver before changing Photoshop settings.
  5. Update or reinstall the tablet driver. If a current driver does not resolve the issue, the manufacturer may be able to advise whether another driver version is appropriate. Avoid treating a rollback as a universal fix.
  6. On Windows, check Windows Ink and WinTab. Start with the input method recommended for your tablet and Photoshop setup; details are in the next section.
  7. Check the application profile. If the driver supports per-app profiles, make sure Photoshop is assigned the intended settings and is not being overridden by a separate profile.
  8. On macOS, check driver permissions. Confirm the tablet driver has the privacy permissions it requires for your macOS and driver versions, then restart the driver and Photoshop. Permission names and locations vary.
  9. Check for interference. Wacom lists driver issues, Windows Ink configuration, nearby devices, and specific software or plugins among possible causes. Its Photoshop troubleshooting guide is a useful next step: Wacom: no pressure in Photoshop.

If a warning triangle appears beside Pen Pressure, Wacom says it can indicate a driver problem; reinstalling the driver for the relevant operating system is a more targeted response than repeatedly changing Photoshop preferences. Wacom pressure troubleshooting

If pressure works in the driver but not Photoshop

Focus on Photoshop’s brush dynamics, the selected brush, the Windows Ink or WinTab configuration, and any application-specific profile. Pressure working in another app does not prove that Photoshop is receiving input through the same path.

If pressure works but feels too stiff or sensitive

Adjust the tablet’s tip-sensitivity curve first, then review brush size, minimum diameter, opacity, or flow. Stroke smoothing affects the feel of a line but is not a pressure-sensitivity control.

If the pen pans or scrolls instead of drawing

This is a different symptom from a brush that draws without pressure. Check pen-button mapping, the driver profile for Photoshop, and Windows Ink or other input conflicts. Wacom has a separate guide for this behavior: Wacom: pen scrolling or panning instead of drawing.

Windows Ink versus WinTab

Windows Ink and WinTab are separate pen-input technologies. For current Windows Photoshop setups, Adobe and Wacom’s standard guidance for Wacom tablets favors enabling Use Windows Ink in the tablet driver. Turning it off is not a universal pressure fix: Wacom says disabling Windows Ink can remove pressure in Photoshop’s normal configuration.

  1. In the tablet driver, enable Use Windows Ink if that is the recommended path for your model and setup.
  2. If available, add Photoshop as an application-specific profile and confirm it uses the intended setting.
  3. Restart Photoshop and test with the basic round brush.
  4. If the tablet does not support Windows Ink or that path fails, follow the tablet maker’s instructions for WinTab or another model-specific configuration.

Adobe documents a WinTab route for tablets that do not support Windows Ink; exact instructions can depend on the device and driver. Adobe tablet-support FAQ Wacom also explains its Windows Ink and alternative setup options: Wacom: using Photoshop without Windows Ink.

Photoshop on iPad uses separate pressure controls

Do not apply the desktop Brush Settings path to Photoshop on iPad. The iPad app has its own stylus controls, including a Use pressure for opacity option and Apple Pencil pressure adjustments. Adobe’s iPad brush guide describes that workflow: Photoshop brushes on iPad.

Choose a starting setup for your task

These are practical starting points, not universal prescriptions; the right feel depends on the brush, hand pressure, and tablet curve.

  • Line art: Enable size pressure and adjust the minimum diameter and tip curve until light lines remain visible while heavier strokes broaden.
  • Painting: Use size pressure, opacity pressure, flow pressure, or a combination according to how the brush should build color.
  • Masking: A lower flow or opacity can support gradual buildup; test on the mask and tune pressure so light touches remain controllable.
  • Retouching: Start with a softer curve and restrained opacity or flow, then adjust if marks are too faint or jump too quickly.

You do not need a pen display to get pressure sensitivity; a standard pen tablet can provide it. A display tablet changes the drawing ergonomics by letting you work directly on the image, not the basic brush-dynamics setup.
