Anchor every tip-prone dresser, bookcase, cabinet, appliance and television before arranging the rest of the room. A child who climbs, pulls up or bumps into an unsecured item can bring it down in seconds, even with an adult nearby. CPSC’s safety campaign puts the risk plainly: “Children like to climb on furniture. For them, the home is a playground.”
Use a restraint or mounting system that matches the item, its weight and the wall or floor surface. Then reduce the reasons a child would climb: keep tempting objects off tops, put heavy contents low, close drawers and keep cords out of reach. The instructions supplied with the furniture, television and restraint kit control the exact hardware and attachment method.

Why anchoring belongs at the start of room planning
Furniture tip-overs are not limited to unattended rooms. CPSC says they can happen while an adult is in the same room, and its 2022 safety video notes that they “happen fast.” Health Canada similarly warns that even furniture that looks stable can tip when a curious toddler pulls up on it. A wide cabinet can become unstable when a child opens a drawer, climbs a shelf or uses a handle as a step.
Painting, moving furniture and styling a room are easier after you have decided which pieces must be secured. An attractive layout is not safe if a dresser blocks an exit, a television sits on an unsuitable stand or a bookcase can move when pushed. Treat anchoring as part of installation rather than as an optional childproofing accessory.

Anchor It! materials call these products anchoring kits, anti-tip kits, furniture restraints, tethering kits or safety straps. A typical kit has two brackets or plates and a connecting strap, but contents vary. The restraint must be intended for the particular item and specified to hold more than the furniture weighs; no single kit or screw works for every wall.
For current public guidance, see CPSC’s Anchor It! safety information and Health Canada’s furniture, appliance and television tip-over guidance.

Walk through the room at a child’s height and list anything that could move, be climbed or be pulled. Include furniture that seems heavy, low or stable; apparent stability does not replace a restraint when the manufacturer provides one.
- Dressers, chests, armoires and other clothing-storage furniture.
- Bookcases, shelving units, media consoles, cabinets and display units.
- Desks, changing tables and storage benches with drawers or doors.
- Free-standing televisions, especially sets on narrow or lightweight stands.
- Appliances or other tall equipment that a child could pull toward themselves.
- Nursery equipment with cords that can be reached from a crib.
Pay special attention to pieces with drawers, pull-out shelves, doors or handles. Opening one high drawer shifts the center of gravity forward; several open drawers can act like a ladder. Furniture on casters or narrow legs deserves extra scrutiny because it can roll or pivot as well as tip.

Choose the restraint by item, wall and load
Start with the furniture or television manual. It may specify an attachment point, a supplied anti-tip device, a maximum load, or a prohibition against modifying the frame. Follow those directions even when a generic kit appears stronger. If instructions conflict, contact the manufacturer or a qualified installer rather than improvising.
| What you are securing | Typical approach | Selection checks |
|---|---|---|
| Dresser, chest or cabinet | Furniture anti-tip kit with brackets or plates and a strap | Attachment point approved for that model; restraint specified for a load greater than the furniture’s weight; wall hardware suited to the surface |
| Bookcase or shelving unit | Anti-tip restraint attached to the upper frame and a wall stud or approved anchor | Frame is strong enough for the bracket; shelves and contents do not exceed the maker’s limits; stud or anchor can take the expected force |
| Television on a stand | TV restraint secured to the set and suitable furniture, or a compatible anti-tip system | Television mounting points and stand are compatible; straps and fasteners are approved for the set; stand is designed to hold its size and weight |
| Wall-mounted flat screen | Wall mount attached according to the mount and television instructions | Mount rating, screen pattern, screw length and wall structure all match; cables cannot be used as climbing points |
| Drywall or plaster attachment | Stud attachment where possible, otherwise heavy-duty anchors made for the furniture type and wall | Anchor type, diameter and installation method are explicitly suitable; do not substitute a light picture-hanging anchor |
| Unknown construction or damaged wall | Pause and obtain manufacturer or qualified installer advice | Do not rely on a guessed stud location, loose plaster or an untested fastener |
Anchor It!’s “What You’ll Need” list names a stud finder, pencil, drill, drill bits, screws and screwdriver as common supplies. The page also says to confirm that the kit contains every part required for the job and that hardware suits the attachment surface. Those are selection considerations, not a universal specification: use the exact sizes and types in your kit and furniture instructions.
Understand the wall before drilling
Wood studs
A stud is generally the most dependable wall attachment point for a furniture restraint. Locate its center with a stud finder and confirm the position using the method recommended for your wall and tool. Mark the drilling point so the screw enters solid wood, not just the drywall edge. Use the screw, pilot-hole size and washer supplied or specified by the kit; a longer screw is not automatically safer if it damages plumbing, wiring or the furniture.
Drywall or plaster without an accessible stud
Health Canada advises anchoring to a stud or using heavy-duty drywall anchors made for the specific furniture type. Ordinary plastic plugs intended for a light picture are not a substitute. Anchor It! also calls for appropriate anchors and hardware for drywall or plaster. Check the anchor’s instructions for a required hole size, spacing and installation tool, and do not exceed its stated capacity. If the wall is old, crumbly, tiled, hollow in an unusual way or already damaged, ask a qualified professional to determine a safe method.

Masonry and other surfaces
Concrete, brick, block, paneling and plaster-over-lath require different drill bits and fasteners. A furniture kit may not include them. Follow the wall-anchor manufacturer’s directions and the furniture maker’s requirements together. If you cannot identify the substrate or verify the fastener’s capacity, stop rather than making a trial hole in a load-bearing attachment point.
How to anchor a dresser, cabinet or bookcase
- Read all instructions first. Confirm the furniture is assembled exactly as directed, identify the approved anchor location and check the kit’s parts, load guidance and wall requirements.
- Empty and position the piece. Remove drawers or contents if the instructions call for it. Place the unit on a level floor with a stable, wide base and leave enough access to drill. Do not anchor a rocking or damaged item; repair or replace it first.
- Mark the furniture attachment point. Use the supplied bracket or plate at the upper rear frame or other specified location. Mark holes without drilling through a thin panel, drawer cavity or electrical component.
- Find and mark the wall attachment. Use a stud where available. Otherwise mark the exact location for the approved heavy-duty anchor. Check for hidden wiring and plumbing using the precautions in the drill and wall instructions.
- Drill the prescribed pilot holes. Match the bit and depth to the supplied screw or anchor. Keep the drill square to the surface; an angled or oversized hole can reduce holding strength.
- Fasten both sides. Attach the furniture bracket and wall bracket or plate with the specified screws, washers and anchors. Tighten firmly without crushing particleboard, stripping threads or deforming the bracket.
- Connect and tension the restraint. Join the strap or tether as directed. Remove slack while leaving no excessive force that pulls the furniture out of level. Do not replace a supplied strap with cord, wire or an improvised belt.
- Reinstall drawers and load gradually. Put heavy items in lower drawers and shelves, keep lighter items higher and close every drawer. Stay within the furniture’s stated load limits.
- Test before children use the room. Apply the gentle push or pull described by the manufacturer. The unit should remain upright and the wall and furniture fasteners should not move, crack or loosen. If anything shifts, unload it and correct the installation.
Never skip assembly steps in an attempt to save time. CPSC’s childproofing guidance recommends assembling furniture according to its instructions, choosing stable pieces with wide bases, keeping heavy items low and closing drawers when they are not in use. Read that guidance at CPSC’s Childproofing Your Home page.

Secure televisions correctly
A television can topple from a stand when a child pulls a screen, tugs a cord or climbs on the furniture below it. CPSC advises using furniture designed to hold the television, anchoring sets that are not wall-mounted, and mounting a flat screen to a wall or furniture to prevent toppling.
For a television on furniture
- Use a stand designed for the television’s dimensions and weight; do not balance a large set on a narrow shelf or dresser.
- Check the television’s own mounting points and the stand or restraint instructions. The correct screw size and thread are model-specific.
- Attach a suitable TV restraint to the set and the approved part of the furniture or wall. Keep the strap short enough to limit forward movement without bending the set.
- Place the television as far back as the stand allows, keep the base fully supported and route cords out of reach.
For a wall-mounted television
Select a mount rated for the screen’s size and weight and compatible with its mounting pattern. Attach the mount to the wall structure specified by its instructions, using the correct fasteners; do not assume that any bracket can be screwed into bare drywall. Verify that the screen locks into the mount and that cables do not pull it forward.

Older or deeper sets
Anchor It! notes that flat screens and older, deeper televisions may require different straps or mounting hardware. Do not use a flat-screen method on a deep set unless the television and restraint instructions explicitly permit it. When the rear attachment points are unclear, obtain model-specific guidance.

Remove climbing incentives
CPSC advises removing toys, remote controls and other tempting objects from the tops of televisions and furniture. Store frequently requested items where children cannot use them as a reason to climb. Avoid placing a chair, step stool, toy chest or movable table beside a tall unit.
Load low and close up
Put books, dishes and other dense objects in the lowest drawers or shelves. Close drawers and cabinet doors after use. A drawer lock can limit access and is useful as a supporting measure, but it does not replace anchoring: a child can still pull on a locked drawer or tip an unsecured cabinet.
Use stable footprints
Health Canada recommends furniture with a wide, stable base sitting directly on the floor. Pieces on legs or wheels may be more likely to tip. Level the unit as the manufacturer directs, keep all feet fully supported and do not place shims, folded cardboard or loose mats under a leg unless the instructions approve that solution.

Control cords
Keep television and cable cords out of children’s reach. In a nursery, Health Canada advises keeping monitor, lamp, sound-machine and other electronic cords away from the crib and mounting a baby monitor out of reach rather than placing it on the crib. See Health Canada’s safe-nursery guidance for that room-specific advice.
Inspect and maintain the installation
Anchoring is not a one-time task. Recheck every restraint after moving furniture, repainting, replacing flooring, installing a new television or filling shelves with different loads. Also inspect after a child has pulled on the item, after an earthquake or vibration, and during ordinary cleaning.
- Look for a loose screw, pulled-out anchor, cracked drywall, split furniture panel or stretched strap.
- Confirm the unit still sits level and does not rock when pushed gently.
- Make sure brackets remain flush and the strap connection is fully closed.
- Check that drawers close completely and that heavy contents remain low.
- Replace damaged hardware with parts approved by the furniture or restraint manufacturer.
If an anchor spins in place, the wall surface crumbles, the strap will not tension or the furniture has pulled away from the wall, unload the piece and keep children away until it is repaired. Moving the same bracket to a random nearby hole can leave a weakened wall and an unknown load path; follow the manufacturer’s repair instructions or hire a qualified installer.
Know when professional help is the safer choice
Get assistance when you cannot identify the wall construction, locate a reliable stud, interpret the furniture’s attachment point, or verify that an anchor is rated for the item. Professional help is also appropriate for very tall or heavy units, masonry walls, damaged plaster, built-in cabinetry, unusual appliances and any installation near concealed utilities. The cost of an expert assessment is smaller than the consequence of a failed attachment.
Do not treat a campaign summary as a substitute for legal advice. Anchor It!’s resources page states that, as of September 1, 2023, furniture manufacturers and retailers must comply with new furniture safety standards and that covered clothing-storage furniture must include anchor kits. The page is a plain-language summary; for product definitions, scope and current compliance questions, consult the Anchor It! resources and current CPSC rule materials rather than assuming every cabinet is covered.
A room-by-room safety check
- Living room: Anchor the media console and television, secure bookcases, remove remotes from tops and route cords away from walking and climbing paths.
- Bedroom: Anchor dressers and wardrobes, keep heavy clothing low, close drawers and do not place toys on top.
- Nursery: Anchor storage furniture, keep the monitor and all electronic cords out of crib reach, and mount the monitor rather than setting it on the crib.
- Playroom: Secure shelving and toy storage, avoid placing climbable furniture beside windows, and keep frequently used toys at child-accessible low levels so children are not tempted to climb.
- Kitchen or utility area: Secure appliances or tall storage that a child could pull on, keep heavy items low and use drawer or door locks where appropriate in addition to anchoring.
Before you finish arranging a room, push each secured item gently, inspect the attachment, scan for climbable objects and confirm that cords are inaccessible. A safe layout combines a correctly installed restraint with stable furniture, sensible loading and regular checks.
