A bird’s nest under your fabric usually means the upper thread has not entered the machine’s tension path correctly—not that the bobbin is necessarily at fault. Stop sewing, raise the presser foot and needle, remove the upper thread, and rethread every guide, the take-up lever, and the needle. Check the bobbin against your machine manual, lower the presser foot, and hold both thread tails behind the foot for the first few stitches.
What causes a thread nest?
When the upper thread misses the tension discs, a guide, or the take-up lever, it can feed excess slack beneath the fabric. The result is looping, bunching, or a tangled “nest” in the bobbin area. The location of the mess is misleading: an underside tangle often begins with the upper-thread path.

| Nest appears underneath throughout the seam | Raise the presser foot and completely rethread the upper path, including the take-up lever. |
| Bunching occurs only at the beginning | Hold both upper and bobbin thread tails behind the foot and start with a few slow stitches. |
| Loops appear above the fabric | Check bobbin orientation and seating, then inspect needle, thread, and upper tension. |
| Tangle returns after careful rethreading | Check needle, presser-foot and stitch selection, lint, and possible damaged parts before seeking service. |
Rethread the machine correctly
1. Raise the presser foot and needle
Thread with the presser foot raised. With the foot down, the tension discs are closed, so the thread may sit outside the tension mechanism. Raise the needle as well so the thread can enter the take-up lever and guides.
2. Engage every guide and the take-up lever
Follow the threading diagram in your model’s manual from the spool to the needle. Do not skip small wire guides or the take-up lever. A missed take-up lever is a direct cause of thread gathering beneath the material.

4. Lower the foot before sewing
Lower the presser foot before pressing the controller. Singer warns that sewing with the foot up can tangle the thread and jam the bobbin. Begin with a few slow stitches while keeping the tails behind the foot.

Check the bobbin and bobbin area
- Use the bobbin type specified for your machine; similar-looking bobbins are not interchangeable.
- Install it in the direction shown in the manual.
- Make sure the bobbin is fully seated and the case or cover is closed correctly.
- Remove the tangle only with the machine stopped. Cut trapped thread carefully rather than pulling hard on the fabric or needle.
Match the needle, thread, fabric, and stitch
A damaged, blunt, bent, or incorrectly installed needle can create loops and feeding problems. Fit a sharp needle of the correct system and size for the fabric, and use good-quality machine thread. Brother recommends Organ or Schmetz needles and notes that unsuitable or low-quality thread can resemble a tension problem.
Confirm that the selected presser foot suits the stitch and that the stitch is appropriate for the fabric. Heavy, stretchy, or densely woven materials may require a different needle size, thread, or presser foot than lightweight woven fabric. If you need a replacement, choose sewing-machine needles only after checking the machine’s needle system and the size required for your fabric; availability and compatibility vary.

Adjust tension only after basic checks
Do not begin by turning the tension dial. First rethread with the foot up, verify the take-up lever, inspect the bobbin, and fit the correct needle and thread. Then make small upper-tension changes, one step at a time, following your model manual. Tension numbers are not universal between machines, and a dial change cannot compensate for a missed guide or incorrectly installed bobbin.
A controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Stop the machine, raise the needle, and clear all tangled thread.
- Remove and reinstall the upper thread with the presser foot raised.
- Confirm that every guide and the take-up lever are engaged.
- Check bobbin type, direction, case or cover seating, and the bobbin area.
- Inspect the needle for damage and confirm its size and installation.
- Verify the presser foot and stitch selected for the fabric.
- Remove lint according to the machine manual; do not oil or disassemble parts unless the manual permits it.
- Lower the foot, hold both tails behind it, and test on a scrap of the same fabric using a few slow stitches.
When to stop troubleshooting
Consult qualified service if the machine still jams after a controlled rethreading test, loops continue in multiple stitches, the handwheel feels obstructed, or a needle, bobbin case, tension component, or other part appears damaged. Industrial and specialty machines may have model-specific start controls or thread-trim conditions, so use that machine’s manual rather than applying domestic-machine assumptions.
