To braid string, tie three strands together at one end, secure them, then alternate moving the outside strands over their neighbors into the center: left, then right, and repeat. Keep the loose lengths untangled, maintain steady tension, and knot the braid when it reaches the length you want.
What you need to braid string
Use three flexible strands of string, yarn, or cord. Choose material for the project’s desired width, stiffness, stretch, and color; paper, cloth, raffia, and leather can also be braided. Specialty cord is not necessary for a basic plait. The finished braid will be shorter than the strands you start with, and the amount of shortening depends on the material and how it is braided.

A secure anchor simply makes the work easier: tie the starting end to something stable or fasten it to a surface.
How to braid three strings together
- Cut three strands. Make each one longer than the finished braid you want, allowing room for the starting and ending knots.
- Tie the starting ends together. Bring the three ends together in one knot, then secure the knot to a stable anchor.
- Separate the strands. Hold one strand in each hand and leave the third between them. Keep the lengths below the working point apart so they do not tangle.
- Move the left strand into the middle. Take the left outside strand over its immediate neighbor. It becomes the center strand.
- Move the right strand into the middle. Take the right outside strand over its immediate neighbor, placing it in the center.
- Repeat the alternating sequence. Continue with the left outside strand over its neighbor, then the right outside strand over its neighbor. Pull each crossing snug with reasonably even tension.
- Finish the braid. Stop at the length you want and tie a knot at the end to keep the plait from unraveling.
Keep the braid even and manageable
- Use consistent tension. Pull the crossings snug, but try to make each one similar. Loose or uneven tension can make the braid look irregular; steady tension improves with practice.
- Untwist and separate the loose strands. Pause to straighten them if they begin wrapping around each other below the braid.
- Check the pattern. Each move brings an outside strand over its neighbor and into the center. If you keep crossing the same side, the braid will not have the simple alternating pattern.
- Leave enough length for finishing. The plait shortens the working strands, and the final knot uses some of the remaining length.
Choosing string or cord for a project
For a simple practice braid, ordinary string or yarn is suitable. For a particular look or feel, compare the material’s flexibility, width, stiffness, stretch, and color. Thicker or stiffer material may produce a broader, firmer-looking plait; finer material can make a narrower one.

Paracord is one optional craft cord, not a requirement. Its maker describes it for projects such as bracelets and crafts, but craft cord should not be treated as safety equipment. Paracord.com explicitly warns that paracord is not life-safety rope and should not be used for climbing, towing, or lifting people; a stated breaking strength is not the same as a safe working load. Uneven spacing most often comes from changing how tightly you pull each crossing. Keep the same basic snugness from left-to-center to right-to-center. If a strand twists or tangles, stop and separate the lengths before continuing; braiding over a tangle can leave a lump in the finished plait.

If the braid feels too short, remember that a plait uses more length than the straight line it covers. Start with strands longer than the target braid, and leave extra room for both knots.
