A convincing autumn refresh does not require a matching store-bought collection. The documented haul combines a $5.99 thrift-store wreath, a 99-cent wood round, other secondhand pieces selected for their shapes, and inexpensive seasonal items from Dollar Tree. Paint, ribbon, fabric and a little editing can make those mismatched finds read as one deliberate display.

What this fall decor haul actually includes
Refresh Restyle’s August 13, 2026 article by Debbie Westbrooks centers on a useful decorating strategy: buy some pieces for immediate display, but also look for secondhand objects whose size, construction or surface gives you room to customize. The thrift-store portion is not presented as a finished, coordinated collection. It is a group of possibilities.

The rag-rug material
Westbrooks also took apart a Dollar General rag rug to show how its fabric strips could become rag bows. That is a material-reuse idea, not a claim that every bow in the project was made from a particular rug currently available in stores. If you try it, inspect the rug’s backing and fibers before cutting and reserve the strips for dry indoor decoration.
Prices, dates and availability: how to read the haul
The $5.99 wreath and 99-cent wood round are article-specific historical prices reported in 2026. They are not current price guarantees, and they should not be treated as a controlled comparison with new merchandise. Thrift prices vary by shop, region, condition and day of the week.
Separate August 2026 coverage gives a snapshot of Dollar Tree’s seasonal assortment. - Scale: Measure the wall, door or tabletop where it will go. A 24-inch wreath can dominate a narrow door, while a 12-inch round may disappear on a large wall.
- Structure: Flex baskets, frames and shelves gently. Avoid pieces with loose joints, active mold, insect damage or a smell that remains after airing.
- Surface: Look for peeling laminate, wax, grease and glossy finishes that will interfere with paint adhesion.
- Material: Wood, unfinished fiberboard and porous basketry accept different primers and paints. Metal may need a bonding primer; fabric needs flexible colorants rather than a thick rigid coating.

Refresh the thrifted wreath without losing its character
The source author considered filling sparse sections with fall picks or ribbon. You can make that update look intentional by treating the existing wreath as the base layer rather than covering every inch.
- Inspect and clean. Remove loose leaves, cobwebs and dust with a soft brush. If the wreath contains natural materials, keep moisture minimal and let it dry completely.
- Map the empty areas. Photograph the wreath from several feet away. Mark the gaps that are visible from the room, not every small opening. This prevents overbuying materials.
- Choose one dominant addition. Use either clustered floral picks or a ribbon treatment as the main change. A few repeated elements look more coherent than many unrelated accents.
- Test placement before fastening. Tuck picks into the frame and step back. Angle stems toward the center or along the wreath’s curve so they follow its movement.
- Secure reversibly where possible. Floral wire, twist ties or removable clips let you change the arrangement next year. Hot glue is convenient but can damage delicate natural fibers and makes later edits harder.
- Add ribbon sparingly. A single tail, a small bow or short woven lengths can bridge a bare spot. Keep the knot behind the wreath so the front remains the focal point.
If you buy new materials specifically for this refresh, useful search terms include fall floral picks and decorative ribbon. Those alternatives are separate purchases, not the $5.99 thrift-store wreath.
Painting the divided basket
Whitewashing was the author’s consideration, not a documented completed transformation. A whitewash can lighten a dark basket while allowing some weave to remain visible.
Preparation
- Empty and vacuum the compartments, then wipe with a barely damp cloth. Let the basket dry fully.
- Test a small hidden area. Some basket fibers swell, shed or become brittle with moisture.
- Protect the work surface and use ventilation. Keep paint away from food-contact surfaces unless the product is specifically rated for that use.
Application
Thin a water-based white or warm-neutral paint with the manufacturer’s recommended medium, or use a premixed wash. Brush across the weave, then remove excess from raised areas with a clean, nearly dry brush or cloth. Build color in light passes; one heavy coat fills the texture and looks opaque rather than whitewashed. Allow each coat to dry before deciding whether another is needed.

For a more durable decorative finish, apply a compatible clear sealer after the paint cures. A matte finish keeps the basket’s aged appearance; a glossy finish emphasizes brush marks and may not suit a rustic arrangement.
Turn the 12-inch wood round into a flexible sign
The 99-cent wood round gives you a controlled, inexpensive surface for a message, motif or simple painted border. Since the source does not specify a finished design, choose lettering that fits your space and can remain useful beyond one season.
- Sand lightly. Knock down splinters and wipe away dust. Do not remove more material than necessary.
- Prime if needed. Bare wood can absorb paint unevenly. A thin coat of suitable primer produces a more predictable background.
- Plan the layout. Trace the round on scrap paper, test the words at full size and leave a quiet margin around the edge.
- Paint the background. Use thin coats and let them dry between passes. Cream, muted green, clay, charcoal or natural wood tones can connect the sign to pumpkins and florals without matching them exactly.
- Add the design. Transfer lettering with a stencil, pencil guide or tracing method. Keep line weight consistent and correct mistakes while the paint is still workable.
- Seal and hang safely. Use a compatible clear coat after full curing. Check the existing hanging hardware or add hardware rated for the round’s weight.
A reversible approach is to paint only a border and small seasonal symbol, leaving the center natural for a neutral look. That makes the sign easier to reuse when the autumn display comes down.

Give the colorful thrifted piece a new role
The article identifies another colorful object as paintable or decoratable without naming a completed makeover. Treat that uncertainty as an advantage: first decide whether the item should be a focal point, a background layer or a functional container.

The rag-rug demonstration shows a way to add soft texture without buying a new roll of ribbon. Cut or tear fabric into strips of similar width, remove loose threads and group several strips for fullness. Tie the bundle around a wreath, basket handle or wagon rail, then trim the tails at an angle.
Inspect the rug before dismantling it. Skip any material with persistent odor, moisture damage, unstable backing or fibers that shed heavily. Rag bows are best kept dry and away from candles, light bulbs and other heat sources. If the fabric is too floppy, combine it with one narrow wired ribbon so the bow holds its shape.

Choose a small visual system before shopping:
- Palette: Select two main colors and one neutral. For example, use rust and olive with cream, or orange and black with natural wood.
- Material balance: Pair hard surfaces such as a wood sign or metal wall piece with soft fabric bows and faux foliage.

- Measure the installation area and record the maximum width and height.
- Choose one anchor object already in hand or set a spending limit for one.
- Inventory paint, primer, brushes, wire, ribbon and hanging hardware before buying duplicates.
- Use Dollar Tree pieces to solve specific shortages: one floral cluster, one pumpkin group or one light element.
- Stop when the palette, height and texture are balanced. More pieces do not automatically make the arrangement richer.
Safety and storage after the season
