How to Build a Coastal DIY Pantry With Concrete Countertops

A step-by-step guide to recreating a light coastal pantry with practical storage, anchored cabinets, and a properly supported, cured, and sealed concrete countertop.

A practical way to recreate Laura Burkhalter’s modern coastal pantry is to design storage around your actual appliances and food supplies, install and reinforce the cabinet run, then treat the concrete countertop as a separate structural project. The Florida laundry-room conversion used a tall cabinet for cleaning equipment, lower drawers for snacks and containers, light shaker cabinetry, brass hardware, and a sealed white concrete surface. The sequence below adapts that case study into a safer planning and build guide, while distinguishing project-specific choices from instructions that must come from your concrete mix and sealer labels.

Plan the pantry around what you store

This pantry was created by taking over part of a laundry room, not by buying a generic storage package. Its purpose was to move appliances, dry goods, dishes, containers, and snacks out of the main kitchen so counters and everyday cabinets could work less hard. Start with an inventory before drawing cabinet widths.

Create storage zones first

  • Tall cleaning zone: A cabinet at the end of the run holds a vacuum, mop, and related supplies. Keeping these items behind a full-height door prevents them from becoming the first visual element in the room.
  • Snack zone: Lower drawers keep frequently reached food visible and accessible without stacking open packages on a shelf.
  • Wrap and container zone: Drawers are useful for rolls of foil or paper, reusable food-storage containers, and their lids because the contents can be viewed from above.
  • Dry-goods and dish zone: Reserve shelf and cabinet volume for the items you are removing from the kitchen. This is a dry pantry; it is not refrigerated storage.
  • Appliance zone: Measure countertop appliances with their cords and operating clearance in mind. A cabinet that fits an appliance but blocks its lid, vents, or plug will not function well.

Write down each item’s height, width, depth, and frequency of use. That list should determine drawer count, cabinet widths, and whether an appliance belongs on the counter or behind a door. Burkhalter described breaking the work into smaller weekly projects to avoid feeling overwhelmed; use that same approach to separate inventory, cabinet preparation, installation, concrete work, and finishing.

Build the modern coastal look without sacrificing function

The project’s style combines modern coastal and transitional cues: light, airy colors; natural wood tones; brass or gold accents; and woven textures. Shaker cabinet doors supply the simple profile, while brass hardware adds contrast without making the room feel ornate.

Cabinet finish

Unfinished wood should be primed before cabinet enamel. In the featured project, satin cabinet enamel was applied to the boxes with a foam roller, while the doors and drawers were sprayed. Remove doors, drawers, and hardware before painting so edges and interiors can be coated evenly. Allow the primer and enamel to dry according to their labels before reassembly; rushing this step can imprint soft paint or cause doors to stick.

Hardware and texture

Choose hardware after confirming the door and drawer thickness, boring pattern, and screw length. Woven baskets, wood accessories, and a restrained brass finish reinforce the coastal palette while keeping the concrete top as the visual work surface. Because the cabinet layout is tied to one household’s needs, treat the appearance as inspiration rather than a fixed plan.

Finishing Orbital sander, wet-sanding supplies, sanding mask or suitable dust protection, eye protection, waterproof gloves, selected sealer Surface refinement, dust control, and stain protection

Do not combine a mix ratio, reinforcement method, cure time, or sealer schedule from unrelated systems. The materials above describe the featured project and an alternate manufacturer method; the current package directions for your exact products control.

Level and anchor the cabinets

Concrete is heavy and unforgiving of a crooked base. Complete the cabinet run before making the countertop form.

  1. Clear the wall: Remove baseboards where they prevent a flush fit. Mark plumbing, electrical boxes, and other obstructions before positioning a box.
  2. Find the studs: Transfer stud locations to the wall and cabinet backs. Construction screws must land in structural framing, not only drywall or trim.
  3. Set the first box: Place it in position and use wood shims to bring it level from front to back and side to side. Check the height against the planned countertop and nearby doors.
  4. Anchor to framing: Drive the specified construction screws through the cabinet fastening rail or back into studs. Keep the box plumb while tightening so the shimmed position does not move.
  5. Join adjacent boxes: Remove doors and drawers for access, clamp neighboring boxes flush, and fasten them together at the locations recommended by the cabinet manufacturer. Recheck level after each connection.
  6. Secure the tall unit: The end cabinet that stores a vacuum or mop needs the same stud anchoring as the lower run. Verify that its door can open fully without striking a wall or appliance.

Shim gaps rather than forcing a cabinet into place. A twisted box can make doors uneven and transfer concentrated loads to the countertop.

Check cabinet support before adding concrete

The Concrete Countertop Institute gives an approximate planning figure of 25 pounds per square foot for most concrete countertops. That is an institute estimate, not a universal weight for every thickness, mix, reinforcement design, or finished surface. Calculate the expected load for your dimensions and ask whether the cabinet manufacturer permits that load.

An undermount sink creates a second support issue: the full weight of the sink must be carried by the cabinets or other under-counter supports. Do not assume the concrete alone will hold it while the adhesive cures.

Fu-Tung Cheng’s cabinet guidance explains why standard factory cabinets may need reinforcement at the base or kick frame, back panel, sides, wide spans such as sink bases, and the top. A plywood top can spread weight and provide a level substrate. His statement that cabinets can handle a countertop without reinforcement refers specifically to custom cabinets made from 3/4-inch plywood on the back, sides, and top; it is not a blanket approval for ordinary factory boxes.

  • Inspect the cabinet construction, not just its exterior finish.
  • Identify unsupported openings and long spans before ordering concrete materials.
  • Plan reinforcement around the actual sink, appliances, and countertop overhangs.
  • Get a qualified contractor or engineer involved if the cabinets, wall, or floor condition is uncertain.

Build and reinforce the countertop form

The featured method starts with a 3/4-inch plywood base on the leveled cabinets. The plywood spreads the load and gives the concrete a continuous, level platform. Build square-edge forms around the perimeter to the intended thickness, sealing corners and seams according to the form system you selected.

  1. Transfer the final dimensions: Account for wall irregularities, appliance clearances, backsplash plans, and any overhang before cutting plywood.
  2. Fasten the base: Attach the plywood to the cabinet tops without crushing shims or creating proud screw heads that could telegraph through the finished surface.
  3. Install edge forms: Keep the forms straight, square, and rigid. A silicone-sealed melamine form is one manufacturer-supported approach; use the sealant specified for your system.
  4. Place reinforcement: Fit fiber mesh and clips so reinforcement remains embedded in the slab rather than resting on the plywood or touching the form face. Follow the selected mix’s placement guidance.
  5. Dry-check everything: Confirm sink openings, faucet locations, seams, and edge details before mixing. Once concrete is in the form, changes are difficult and messy.

Pour, cure, finish, and seal the concrete

Mix and place

Use the water amount and mixing sequence printed for the selected countertop mix. A bucket and drill mixer can help produce a consistent batch, but do not add water simply because the mix looks stiff. Optional pigment must be measured consistently from batch to batch or the color can vary.

Place concrete promptly, working it into corners and around reinforcement. The featured project used troweling and leveling; the official QUIKRETE countertop guide describes placing the mix in lifts, screeding the surface, and vibrating the form to reduce voids. Those are two descriptions of a system, not steps to blend indiscriminately. Follow one complete method from its manufacturer.

Cure under controlled conditions

Protect the filled form from disturbance and follow the product’s covered-curing requirements. The QUIKRETE guide calls for at least 18 hours of covered curing before its next steps, while another sealer or mix may require a different schedule. Do not demold, lift, or sand until the label allows it and the slab has reached the required condition.

Sand with dust control

Burkhalter wet-sanded her countertop to reduce airborne dust and wore a mask. Concrete dust can irritate the lungs and eyes, so use wet methods where appropriate, eye protection, and the respiratory protection specified for the operation. Keep slurry away from drains and finished surfaces, and let the surface dry before applying sealer.

Seal for the way the counter will be used

Burkhalter noted, “Concrete is porous and will stain if you do not seal it,” and reported applying four coats of her chosen water-based sealer with one-hour waits between coats. That timing belongs to her product and project; the current label for your sealer supersedes it.

Sealer type What it does Trade-off
Penetrating treatment Soaks into the concrete and makes cleanup easier. Does not fully block exposure to staining or acids.
Topical coating Creates a surface barrier and can better resist stains and etching. Can scratch and may require careful maintenance or recoating.

The Concrete Countertop Institute advocates coatings, but that is its recommendation rather than a universal rule. Verify cure time, gloss, chemical resistance, food-contact directions, and maintenance instructions for the exact product. Avoid broad “food safe” claims unless the sealer documentation states the applicable conditions.

Use the manufacturer’s alternate method as a complete system

QUIKRETE’s official guide is useful when its countertop mix and Acrylic Concrete Cure & Seal are the products you selected. Its shopping list and sequence use melamine forms with silicone-sealed seams, mix prepared according to the bag directions, lifts, screeding, vibration to reduce voids, at least 18 hours of covered curing, sanding, and the specified cure-and-seal product. The guide also calls for eye protection and waterproof gloves when handling cement-based materials and says to follow applicable local codes.

  • Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.

That procedure should remain internally consistent. Do not borrow a water ratio from one mix, a cure time from another, and a sealer schedule from a third. Different products can have different aggregate, reinforcement, thickness, and moisture requirements.

Plan the work in manageable phases

A phased schedule keeps cabinet finishing from colliding with wet concrete work:

  1. Inventory and design: Measure stored items, sketch zones, confirm appliance clearances, and choose drawer and tall-cabinet locations.
  2. Room preparation: Remove interfering trim, locate studs, protect adjacent finishes, and check plumbing and electrical conditions.
  3. Cabinet finishing: Prime unfinished wood, apply cabinet enamel, and allow the finish to cure before installation.
  4. Cabinet installation: Shim, level, anchor, and join boxes; then verify the complete run.
  5. Structural review: Confirm support for the concrete, sink, openings, and overhangs before building forms.
  6. Concrete work: Assemble the plywood base and forms, place reinforcement, mix, pour, level, cure, sand, and seal.
  7. Reassembly: Reinstall doors, drawers, and hardware only after the cabinet finish and countertop sealer have reached their stated cure conditions.

Understand the project’s historical cost

Architectural Digest reported that Burkhalter spent about $500 on her concrete countertops and considered comparable quartz to be well over $1,000. Those figures were her project-specific report in the October 4, 2022 article, not current market prices or a promise of DIY savings. Material quantities, regional labor, cabinet condition, reinforcement, delivery, tools, and sealer can change the total substantially.

The available reporting does not establish a general pantry return on investment, typical DIY savings, or a universal durability period for concrete. Price the actual cabinet run, reinforcement, form materials, mix, finishing supplies, protective equipment, and any professional structural or electrical work before committing.

Troubleshoot before a problem becomes permanent

  • Doors do not align: Stop and recheck cabinet level, plumb, shims, and joined-box fasteners before installing the countertop.
  • A long span feels flexible: Do not pour. Revisit cabinet reinforcement and the plywood support with a qualified professional.
  • Voids appear at an edge: Review placement and vibration technique for the selected system; do not fill defects with an incompatible patch without checking sealer compatibility.
  • Surface remains damp: Delay sanding or sealing until the mix’s curing instructions permit it. Trapping moisture can compromise the finish.
  • Sealer scratches or stains: Identify whether the product is a penetrating treatment or topical coating, then follow its maintenance and recoating directions rather than applying an unapproved second product.
  • Dust spreads through the room: Stop dry sanding, isolate the work area, switch to wet methods where suitable, and use the specified eye and respiratory protection.

Final checklist before using the pantry

  • Every cabinet is level, plumb, joined, and anchored into studs.
  • The tall cleaning cabinet and lower storage drawers match the inventory you made.
  • Concrete weight, sink weight, spans, openings, and overhangs have been checked against the cabinet construction.
  • The form, reinforcement, mix, cure, sanding, and sealer steps come from one compatible system.
  • Concrete and sealer have cured for the periods stated by their current product instructions.
  • Doors, drawers, appliances, and plumbing clearances operate without rubbing or blocking ventilation.
