You can create a genuine library nook in a rental by combining removable visual treatment with freestanding or carefully mounted furniture—but “rental-friendly” is not the same as damage-free. A documented Woodbridge, New Jersey project used peel-and-stick floral wallpaper, drilled and anchored floating shelves, two ottomans, rechargeable puck lights and a side table to turn an unused corner into a place for books, study, coffee and rest.
What makes a small rental corner feel like a library?
A library nook does not require a built-in bookcase. It needs a recognizable composition: a defined backdrop, vertical storage, a comfortable place to sit, useful light and objects that tell the reader who lives there. Keeping those elements separate makes the project adaptable when you move.

The Architectural Digest project published July 7, 2023 demonstrates the approach. The corner was opposite the kitchen in Jasmina Johnson’s Woodbridge, New Jersey apartment. DIY designer Julian Thomas adapted her wish for a personal library to rental limitations. Johnson wanted to display books she had kept since childhood and hoped the special space would encourage her son to read. Thomas described it as a place where her son could study after school and where she could drink morning coffee and curl up with a book.
The finished arrangement used a bold floral peel-and-stick wallpaper backdrop, floating shelves for books and keepsakes, two olive velvet ottomans pushed together as a daybed, rechargeable lights beneath the shelves and a wooden side table. The result is maximalist because the color, pattern and collections are intentionally visible, not because every surface is filled.

Start with measurements, permissions and a wall check
Measure the usable footprint
Measure the full width of each wall, the distance from the corner to doors and windows, baseboard height, outlet locations and the swing of nearby cabinets. Record ceiling height as well; shelf spacing that works on a tall wall can feel cramped under a low one. Mark the proposed ottoman footprint on the floor with painter’s tape and sit inside it before buying anything.
Plan the reading position so a person can enter without brushing against a shelf. Leave access to outlets and switches. If the corner is opposite a kitchen, as in the case study, account for cooking traffic, steam and splashes before choosing fabric or wallpaper.

Read your lease before making holes
Peel-and-stick wallpaper may reduce the commitment of a feature wall, but the shelves in the documented project were not no-drill. Thomas drilled pilot holes, inserted plastic anchors, fitted mounting brackets and added small corner brackets. Ask the landlord or building manager whether those holes are permitted, whether anchors must be removed at move-out and whether there are restrictions on wall coverings.
Locate electrical wiring and plumbing before drilling. A stud finder, building plans or maintenance guidance can help, but none replaces caution around outlets, switches, radiators and pipes. If drilling is prohibited, use a freestanding storage solution rather than treating adhesive strips as a substitute for a load-rated book-storage system.
Inspect the wall before applying removable wallpaper
A WallPops product result specifies a smooth, clean, dry, painted surface and excludes textured walls. That is product-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every removable wallpaper. Check the exact package instructions, test a small hidden area and photograph the wall condition before installation. Dust, grease, fresh paint, flaking paint and texture can all affect adhesion or removal.

Use the table as a planning checklist rather than a promise that the case-study products will fit your room. The feature is dated, so model names, dimensions, inventory and specifications should be rechecked before purchase.

1. Clear and protect the corner
Remove furniture, artwork and switch plates or outlet covers from the work area. Keep screws and covers in a labeled container. Vacuum the wall and baseboards, then wipe them with the cleaner recommended by the wallpaper manufacturer. Allow the surface to dry completely. Cover the floor and protect nearby furniture from adhesive, trimming and drilling dust.

2. Establish a straight wallpaper starting line
Use a level and pencil to draw a vertical starting line. Do not rely on a corner being perfectly square; a small error at the first panel becomes obvious across a patterned wall. Position the first panel against that line, following the product’s overlap or butt-joint instructions.
3. Align, smooth and trim each panel
- Peel back only enough liner to control the top of the panel.
- Press the exposed section into place, working downward and outward to reduce bubbles.
- Temporarily tape the next panel while you align its pattern and edge.
- Use a plastic putty spatula to press the material into inside corners.
- Trim the excess at the ceiling, baseboard and side edges with a sharp blade and a straight edge.
- Replace covers only after the adhesive has settled and the edges are secure.
In the documented installation, panels were left with 3 to 6 inches of overhang before trimming. That was the designer’s method, not universal manufacturer advice; follow the instructions for your specific roll. Keep a spare offcut so you can test removal and patch a damaged section later.
4. Lay out and install the shelves
The case study used 73-inch IKEA Lack shelves cut to 71 inches on the back wall and 42-inch shelves on the left wall, with 18 inches between shelf levels. Treat those dimensions as a reference layout, not a universal standard. The designer noted that the Lack shelves are hollow in the center and described cutting them with a rotary saw.
- Mark the shelf heights and the corner transition with a measuring tape, pencil and level.
- Confirm that every bracket lands where the wall construction and chosen anchor can support it.
- Drill the specified pilot holes with a 3/4-inch bit where required for the selected anchors.
- Insert plastic anchors, attach the mounting brackets and check level before tightening.
- Add the small corner brackets used in the project for extra support.
- Install the shelf body according to its instructions, then test it empty before adding books.
The feature does not provide a load rating or an engineering assessment. Do not infer that any shelf can carry a particular number of books from this example. Put heavier volumes close to supported points, distribute weight rather than concentrating it at one end and stop if a shelf bows, shifts or pulls away from the wall.
5. Create a flexible daybed
Push two ottomans together and check that their heights align. Add a firm cushion or folded throw only if it does not make the seating unstable. Ottomans preserve flexibility: they can separate for extra seats, move for cleaning or leave with you when the lease ends. Test the arrangement with an adult sitting down and standing up; a reading nook should not require balancing on a narrow edge.
6. Add light in layers
Place magnetic USB-rechargeable puck lights beneath the shelves for a soft pool of ambient light. Aim them toward the wall or seating area to reduce glare on glossy covers. Rechargeable lights avoid a trailing cord, but they still need a charging routine and a secure mounting surface.
Ambient light is not automatically task light. Read a few pages at the actual seating position in the evening. If print is dim, add a properly positioned floor or table lamp that does not heat the wallpaper, obstruct a walkway or create a trip hazard. The case study does not measure brightness, so check the output and beam pattern of your chosen light rather than assuming puck lights are sufficient.

7. Style the shelves last
Start with the books you most want to see, including childhood collections and current favorites. Group some vertically and stack a few horizontally to vary the line. Leave breathing room so the floral pattern remains visible. Add keepsakes and a small number of decorative objects at different heights, then place a side table where a mug can be reached without stretching across the ottomans.
Maximalism works best when there is a visual hierarchy. Let the wallpaper supply large-scale pattern, let the books provide repeated color and texture and reserve the brightest objects for focal points. Thomas said he was glad people were embracing maximalism again; the practical lesson is to choose abundance deliberately rather than filling every inch.
Make the setup safer and easier to live with
- Anchor any freestanding case or tall object that could tip, especially in a child’s reading area.
- Keep heavy books on the most strongly supported shelves and lighter decor higher up.
- Keep drinks on the side table, not on a shelf edge or ottoman seam.
- Route charging cables away from the walking path and unplug damaged cords.
- Check shelf fasteners after the first week and periodically afterward.
- Keep wallpaper away from damp areas and repair lifting seams before dirt reaches the adhesive.
If your child studies in the nook, sit at the desk-free reading position and check whether the light reaches the page without shining into the eyes. A cozy atmosphere should support concentration, not replace adequate illumination.

When drilling is not allowed
Keep the design language but change the storage strategy. A low, freestanding bookcase, a narrow etagere or a modular cube unit can create vertical display without wall anchors; verify the manufacturer’s capacity, anti-tip requirements and footprint for each model. Use wallpaper only if your lease and the product instructions allow it. For a strictly no-hole installation, do not load ordinary adhesive ledges with hardback books unless the product is explicitly designed and rated for that use.
You can also make the reading zone furniture-led: place two ottomans beside a freestanding shelf, add a side table and use a rechargeable lamp. This preserves the movable seating and layered atmosphere of the case study while avoiding the specific drilled-shelf method.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
Wallpaper will not stay flat
Stop before pressing harder. Recheck whether the wall is textured, dusty, damp or recently painted, and consult the product instructions. Lift and reposition only as directed; repeated peeling can reduce adhesion. A visible seam may be better corrected with a fresh panel than repeatedly stretched.
A shelf feels loose or bows
Remove the books immediately and inspect the bracket, anchor and wall surface. Confirm that the anchor matches the wall construction and that the shelf body is seated correctly. Because the case study supplies no load rating, replace or reinforce the system according to the manufacturer’s guidance rather than guessing how much weight it can carry.
The nook looks busy but does not feel restful
Remove a few objects, keep one clear landing area on the side table and repeat a limited color palette through books and textiles. Maximalism needs contrast with empty space so the eye can rest.
The light looks pretty but reading is tiring
Move the source closer to the page, reduce glare from glossy covers and test a supplementary task lamp. Recharge the puck lights and confirm that the mounting magnets remain secure. Do not claim a light is adequate until it works for your eyes at the actual seat.
Plan for moving out
Photograph the finished wall and shelf layout for your records. Keep the wallpaper packaging and spare offcuts. At move-out, follow the wallpaper maker’s removal method rather than pulling quickly, and expect that painted surfaces can react differently. Remove shelf contents, take down brackets carefully, remove anchors if required by the lease and patch and touch up drilled holes to the property’s standard. A rental-friendly project is one you can reverse responsibly, not one that guarantees a pristine wall in every building.

The practical design brief
For a compact DIY library nook, prioritize the order that affects both comfort and risk: confirm permission and wall condition, measure the corner, establish the backdrop, install storage with the correct support, test seating, then tune lighting and styling. The documented apartment proves that separate pieces can feel like a dedicated library. It also makes the important qualification visible: peel-and-stick wallpaper may be removable, while anchored shelves still change the wall.
