How to Build a DIY Butterfly Study Shadow Box Without Damaging the Specimen

Make a durable butterfly study shadow box by pinning through the thorax, spreading the wings on a board, drying fully, and mounting the specimen above a soft, labeled backing.

A convincing butterfly study shadow box depends on three things: an ethically obtained specimen, a pin-and-spread preparation that dries completely, and a deep frame with soft pinable backing. Pin the insect through the thorax midline, shape the wings on a spreading board, let it dry for at least five days (longer for larger specimens), then transfer the mounted specimen and its label into the box. This method preserves a scientific-looking record without gluing delicate wings to the glass or backing.

Use a butterfly that was found already dead, obtained from an ethical source, or made as a faux craft. Thanksgiving Point’s framing guidance specifically discourages killing a butterfly for art. Collection and transport rules vary by location and species, so check the regulations that apply where you live before acquiring a specimen.

Decide what your shadow box is meant to do

A decorative frame and a study display have different priorities. A single butterfly can be posed attractively in a shallow-looking frame, while a collection-style box needs room for a pin, a label, and enough clearance that the wings cannot touch the glazing. Choose the format before buying materials.

Display format Best use Backing and clearance Label treatment
Decorative butterfly shadow box One specimen arranged as wall art Deep shadow box with enough interior depth for the pin, backing, and spread wings Small title or provenance card can sit below or beside the insect
Study or collection box Organized specimens intended for identification and reference Cork or another soft, pin-receiving material across the bottom; allow room for pins and labels Place the label below the specimen, with the specimen facing toward the top of the box
Faux-butterfly craft Classroom or decorative project without a real specimen Use the manufacturer’s attachment method; no entomological pinning is required Label the model as a reproduction so it is not mistaken for a collected specimen

Iowa State University Extension recommends cork or another soft material that accepts pins for an entomology exhibit. Purdue University’s insect-collection guidance places pinned insects facing the top of the box and labels beneath them. Those conventions make a display easier to read and maintain, but a purely decorative arrangement may use a different orientation if it does not pretend to be a scientific record.

Gather materials before touching the butterfly

Set up a clean, well-lit work surface away from fans, pets, food, and direct sunlight. Have the following ready:

  • Stainless-steel entomological insect pins.
  • A pinning block or other guide that helps keep the pin height consistent.
  • A spreading board with a central groove for the body.
  • Plastazote or another soft, pinable setting block.
  • Wing-setting strips; plain wax paper can serve as a temporary substitute if it does not stick to the scales.
  • Fine setting pins.
  • Fine or entomological forceps for optional precision work.
  • Sharp scissors.
  • Archival pen and acid-free card for the label.
  • Card mounts or points and a small amount of mounting glue for the label or support card, not for the butterfly’s wings.
  • A deep shadow box with glazing and an interior depth verified before purchase.
  • Cork or other soft pin-receiving backing if the frame does not include one.

National Museums Scotland lists these preparation tools for pinned insects. The guidance does not establish a universal pin size, retail frame dimension, brand, or price, so select tools that fit your specimen and the frame’s measured interior rather than relying on a nominal product description.

Prepare the specimen and protect fragile parts

Work only with a relaxed, workable specimen

A completely dry butterfly is brittle. If the legs, antennae, or wings resist a gentle adjustment, stop rather than forcing them. Professional preparators may recondition specimens in a controlled setting, but a home shadow-box project should not improvise with steam, soaking, or heat. Handle the insect by the thorax or pin, never by the wing surface, because scales and thin veins can be damaged by pressure.

Plan the pose before inserting a pin

Lay the butterfly beside the spreading board and decide how much of the natural wing pattern you want visible. A broad, symmetrical spread is easy to read, but projecting appendages become more vulnerable to breakage. The UC Riverside Entomology Research Museum notes that display preparations can differ from research specimens and that extended structures are more susceptible to damage. Keep the pose restrained: expose the diagnostic markings without stretching the wings farther than they naturally move.

Pin and spread the butterfly

The following sequence follows the ordinary air-drying method described by National Museums Scotland. Keep every adjustment small and deliberate.

  1. Place the pin through the thorax midline. Position the insect on the spreading board and insert the entomological pin through the body’s midline, using a pinning block to establish a repeatable height. Avoid the abdomen, head, and wing bases.
  2. Seat the body in the board groove. The groove keeps the body level while you move the wings. Check from the front and side that the insect is not leaning.
  3. Set the forewings. Move each forewing with a setting pin or forceps until the forewing edge is at the perpendicular relationship to the body described in the museum method. Work from the stronger wing veins and avoid dragging across the wing surface.
  4. Align both sides. Compare left and right wing positions from above. The leading edges do not need to be forced into perfect geometry if the specimen’s natural shape makes that unsafe; a stable, readable pose is more important than symmetry.
  5. Set the hindwings. Bring the hindwings into a balanced position beneath the forewings. Do not pin through the wing itself. Use the veins and surrounding strips to hold the shape.
  6. Align the antennae. Place the antennae forward and evenly, using separate setting pins if needed. Their fine segments break easily, so make one adjustment and reassess rather than repeatedly repositioning them.
  7. Cover the wings with setting strips. Lay narrow strips over the wing margins or stronger veins. The strips hold the wings flat without pressing a pin directly into the membrane.
  8. Secure the strips. Insert setting pins through the strips and into the board on either side of the wings. Pins should hold the paper or film, not puncture the wing.
  9. Support the abdomen from below. Add a small support beneath the abdomen so its weight does not pull the thorax or alter the spread while drying.
  10. Inspect the complete preparation. Confirm that the wings, antennae, body, and pin are stable, and that no setting pin touches a wing edge. Photograph the arrangement now if you want a record of the pose before it is transferred.

Dry the preparation completely

Leave the pinned butterfly undisturbed on the spreading board for at least five days. National Museums Scotland gives that minimum for its ordinary drying method and notes that the actual time depends on specimen size. A small specimen may finish sooner, while a thick-bodied or damp specimen may need longer. Do not shorten the period simply because the wings feel firm; the body and wing bases must also be dry.

Keep the board in a dry, dust-free room at stable indoor conditions. Avoid direct sun, hair dryers, radiators, ovens, and sealed containers that trap moisture. The museum also describes a shorter drying-oven route for trained preparation contexts; that is not a reason to improvise heat at home. If the specimen still flexes at the thorax or abdomen after five days, leave it pinned and supported until it is rigid.

Build the shadow-box interior

Measure clearance, not just the frame’s outside size

Before mounting anything, measure the usable depth from the backing surface to the glazing, then account for the thickness of the backing, the pin height, and the highest point of the wings. The butterfly must not touch the glass when the frame is closed. A frame sold as a “shadow box” is not automatically deep enough for a pinned insect, and neither the museum preparation guidance nor the framing guide sets one universal retail dimension.

Install a pinable backing

If the frame has a soft insert, verify that an insect pin holds firmly without wobbling. Otherwise, fit cork or another soft pin-receiving material across the bottom. Keep the surface flat and secure; a loose layer can shift the specimen every time the box is moved. For a study display, use a plain, low-contrast backing so wing markings and the label remain legible. For decorative work, fabric or colored paper can be used as long as it does not shed fibers onto the specimen.

Transfer the dried specimen

Move the entire pin-and-butterfly assembly rather than lifting the butterfly by a wing. Position the pin vertically in the prepared backing and press it in until the specimen sits at the planned height. If the original setting board established a different pin height, adjust the backing thickness or pin depth; do not bend the insect to fit the frame. Leave a visible gap around the wing tips and antennae.

Create a useful study label

A label turns a pretty object into a record. Write in archival pen on acid-free card and keep the text compact enough to read through the glazing. Include only information you actually know; an uncertain identification is better marked “unidentified” than guessed.

  • Common name, if established.
  • Scientific name and authority, only when verified.
  • Collection location, including country and a more precise locality when known.
  • Date found or acquired.
  • Collector or source, when ethically and accurately documented.
  • A note such as “found dead” or “ethically sourced,” when that is the specimen’s provenance.
  • Your display or catalog number if this is part of a series.

Place the label below the specimen for the collection-style layout described by Purdue University. Attach the card to the backing or a card mount with a small amount of mounting glue; never use the label adhesive to hold the butterfly itself.

Close, inspect, and hang the box

  1. Check the interior with the frame open: pin secure, wings clear of the glazing, label readable, and no loose setting material left inside.
  2. Close the shadow box slowly while watching the wing tips and antennae. If anything contacts the glass, increase the interior clearance instead of compressing the insect.
  3. Secure the backing according to the frame hardware and keep the box horizontal until you are certain nothing has shifted.
  4. Hang it away from direct sunlight, radiators, damp bathrooms, and areas with repeated vibration. Strong light fades pigments, while heat and humidity accelerate deterioration.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause Safer correction
Wing edge curls during drying Insufficient strip coverage or a strip placed away from the supporting veins While the specimen is still workable, replace or reposition the strip gently; do not add a pin through the wing.
One wing sits higher Body not level in the board groove or uneven support beneath the abdomen Level the body and adjust support before the preparation hardens. After drying, leave a stable asymmetry rather than forcing a brittle wing.
Pin wobbles in the finished box Backing is too hard, too thin, or has a widened hole Replace or reinforce the cork or other soft backing and re-seat the pin vertically.
Butterfly touches the glass Insufficient interior depth or excessive pin height Use a deeper box or change the backing thickness; never press the glazing against the wings.
Antenna breaks Repeated handling or a forceful adjustment Stop repositioning. Preserve the remaining structure and record the condition on the label if the display is intended as a study specimen.
Specimen remains soft after five days Large body, high humidity, or incomplete airflow Keep it pinned, supported, and undisturbed in a dry room for additional time. Do not apply household heat.

Maintain the finished display

Dust the outside of the frame with a soft cloth. Do not spray cleaner near the seams, because liquid can migrate into the backing. If the interior develops condensation, remove the box from the wall and investigate humidity before resealing it. Open the frame only when necessary, support the backing from below, and hold the pin or backing rather than the wing. A study box should be checked occasionally for loose pins, detached labels, fading, or insect damage; record any change instead of repeatedly handling the specimen.

The September 25, 2026 UC Agriculture and Natural Resources article “How to Pin an Insect” describes pinning dead insects for display or scientific study in a public Bohart Museum of Entomology demonstration. That purpose is the useful distinction for a home project: prepare a dead or ethically sourced specimen carefully, document what you know, and design the box so the insect can be seen without being squeezed, glued, or repeatedly touched.
