Build the sign around a 24 × 36-inch print, a rigid 3/4-inch wood panel, and a simple framed back. The reliable sequence is to reinforce and stain the panel first, tea-age the paper, let it dry overnight, attach it with matte decoupage glue, and seal the surface. You can keep the paper clean instead of aging it, and you should confirm that the score is lawful to reproduce before ordering a large copy.

What this project makes

This sign is oversized wall art made from a sheet-music enlargement mounted to a wooden panel. The documented version uses a 24 × 36-inch print on a matching 24 × 36-inch piece of 3/4-inch particle board. Pine strips on the back stiffen the panel, while additional strips around the perimeter create a simple raised frame.

The finished look depends on two choices: the face material and the paper treatment. Particle board can telegraph a slightly crinkled texture through the mounted sheet. Plywood gives a smoother face if you want the music to look more like a flat poster. Tea brushed over the print creates an aged, uneven tone; leaving the paper untreated produces a cleaner modern sign.

The method comes from Lauren’s “DIY Oversized Sheet Music Sign” tutorial at Bless’er House, published April 14, 2015 and updated April 27, 2023. Its reported costs and finish observations are the maker’s experience, not a current price guarantee or a measured average.

Plan the dimensions before buying anything

Match the panel to the finished print

Choose the final print size first. For the documented build, both the print and the panel are 24 × 36 inches. Matching those dimensions avoids trimming notation at the edges and gives you a straightforward glue-up. If you choose another size, have the print shop confirm the exact cut size and make the panel to that measurement rather than relying on a nominal paper label.

Allow for the frame profile

The visible artwork occupies the panel face. The 1 × 2 pine strips sit around the edges and read as a narrow frame from the front; their actual finished width depends on how you orient and cut them. Dry-fit the strips around the panel before nailing so the corners meet cleanly and the print will not be covered by an unexpected lip.

Decide how you will hang it

A 24 × 36-inch wood sign is large enough to need a secure hanging point. Plan the hardware and wall location before the final coat dries. A cleat or two properly rated D-rings distributes weight better than a single light picture hook. Use wall anchors appropriate to your wall type, and have a second person help lift and position the panel.

Materials and tools

Item Purpose and selection notes
3/4-inch particle board, 24 × 36 inches Rigid sign panel in the documented build; its face can show a crinkled texture under the paper.
Plywood, optional Alternative panel when a smoother face is preferred.
1 × 2 pine furring strips Cross-back reinforcement and perimeter frame.
Brad nails and wood nails Fastening for the strips; use nail lengths that do not puncture the face.
Nail gun or hammer Installation of the reinforcement and frame.
Circular saw or jigsaw Cutting the panel and strips; a lumberyard cut can replace owning a saw.
Black tea Optional paper-aging wash.
Homemade tea, apple-cider-vinegar and steel-wool stain or a commercial stain Color for the exposed frame and panel edges.
24 × 36-inch large-format print Artwork that will be mounted to the face.
Lawfully usable sheet-music file The digital source for the enlargement; ownership of a file alone is not proof of reproduction permission.
Matte decoupage glue, brushes and paper towels Adhesive, sealing coat and blotting supplies.

Protect your work surface from stain and glue. Wear eye protection when cutting or nailing, clamp material before sawing, and ventilate the area when using stain or adhesive.

Choose and prepare the sheet music legally

A musical work can be fixed in sheet music or in a digital file, and the printed edition or arrangement can create separate rights questions. Before sending a file to a copy shop, identify what you actually have: the underlying composition, the particular arrangement, the scan or typeset edition, and the intended use as enlarged wall art.

  • Public-domain score: In the United States, works published before January 1, 1931 are currently in the public domain because their copyright term has expired. That statement is tied to U.S. publication dates; it does not automatically clear a later arrangement, edition, scan or use in another country.
  • Permission or license: Use a score whose rightsholder or license expressly allows the reproduction and display you plan.
  • Specific statutory exception: A limitation such as fair use may apply only after considering all the circumstances. The U.S. Copyright Office says there is no fixed safe number of notes or percentage that can be used without permission.

Do not assume that buying a downloadable file authorizes a 24 × 36-inch reproduction. Save the source information and any license terms with your project records. A copy shop may also have its own policy requiring you to confirm that you have permission to reproduce the file, so ask before ordering.

Order a print that will mount cleanly

Use the demonstrated print route

The tutorial used a digital score file printed by a copy shop as a large “engineer print.” Large-format terminology varies, so ask for a 24 × 36-inch sheet, the paper type available for that process, and whether the shop can print the file at 100 percent without automatic cropping or scaling.

Check the file before uploading

  • Open the file at its native aspect ratio and compare it with 24 × 36 inches.
  • Keep a border around important notation if the copy shop cannot print edge to edge.
  • Ask for a proof or inspect a small section for legibility before committing to the full-size copy.
  • Confirm that the shop accepts your file format and permits the requested reproduction.

The original tutorial reported a little over $3 for its 24 × 36-inch print at the time. That was a local price reported in 2015, and print costs, paper choices, available sizes and reproduction policies change, so obtain a current quote from your provider.

Build the wood panel and frame

  1. Cut the panel. Cut the particle board or plywood to the exact print dimensions. For the documented design, that is 24 × 36 inches. If a store makes the cut, verify both measurements before leaving.
  2. Lay out the back reinforcement. Place 1 × 2 strips across the back so the broad panel is supported and less likely to bow. Keep the strips inside the perimeter and mark their positions.
  3. Fasten the reinforcement. Nail the cross strips to the back with brads or wood nails. Test one nail in scrap first to ensure its length will not break through the face.
  4. Dry-fit the perimeter. Arrange 1 × 2 strips around the front-facing edges to form the frame. Check that the corners are square and that no strip intrudes into the artwork area.
  5. Nail the frame. Fasten the perimeter strips. A nail gun speeds the work, but a hammer works as well if you pre-position and support the panel.
  6. Stain the wood. Apply the tea, apple-cider-vinegar and steel-wool stain described in the tutorial, or use a commercial stain. Coat the frame and any exposed panel edges, wipe off excess, and allow the color to dry according to the stain instructions.

Stain before mounting the paper. That keeps wet color and sanding dust away from the printed surface and lets you handle the panel without risking fingerprints in the artwork.

Tea-age the print without losing the notation

Tea aging is optional. If you want the paper bright, skip this section and mount the dry print as supplied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Brew strong black tea and let it cool enough to handle safely.
  2. Lay the print flat on a protected surface. Work in sections rather than flooding the entire sheet at once.
  3. Brush tea over one section, watching the tone change. Blot with a paper towel where the wash is too dark or pools at an edge.
  4. Vary the amount of tea slightly if you want an irregular, older-looking surface, but keep musical symbols readable.
  5. Leave the print flat to dry overnight. Do not glue damp paper; residual moisture can cause wrinkles, weak adhesion or trapped discoloration.

Make a small test with a duplicate or an unimportant margin first. Different papers absorb liquid at different rates, and a copy-shop sheet may dry lighter or darker than expected.

Mount the paper with matte decoupage glue

  1. Place the fully dry print on the panel and check its orientation, margins and alignment.
  2. Lift or roll back one section of paper so you can work progressively instead of coating the entire face at once.
  3. Brush a thin, even layer of matte decoupage glue onto the panel section.
  4. Lower the paper gradually, smoothing from the attached edge outward to push air toward the unmounted area.
  5. Continue in overlapping sections until the print is attached. Use a clean, soft tool or your hand through a sheet of release paper to smooth bubbles without tearing the wet sheet.
  6. After the adhesive has set enough that the paper will not shift, brush on a sealing top coat. Keep strokes light and consistent; heavy reworking can disturb the paper or pull pigment.
  7. Let the sign dry completely on a level surface before installing hanging hardware.

Glue behaves differently with thin engineer paper and heavier poster stock. If the paper expands when wet, work in smaller sections and avoid stretching it. A slight overlap hidden under the frame is safer than trimming a wet sheet flush with the edge.

Choose the finish you actually want

Textured, rustic version

Use particle board, tea-age the print, and stain the pine in a contrasting dark tone. The panel’s texture and uneven tea wash reinforce an antique sign appearance.

Smoother, cleaner version

Use plywood, skip the tea, and choose a lighter stain or painted frame. This keeps the notation crisp and reduces the visual variation caused by the paper wash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controlled aging

If a full tea wash is too strong, brush only the perimeter or dilute the tea. The tutorial treats tea as an aesthetic step, not a structural requirement, so the sign remains functional without it.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Paper tears while smoothing The sheet is saturated or being rubbed repeatedly. Use less glue, work in smaller sections, and smooth once from the center toward the edge.
Large bubbles remain after mounting Glue was applied too broadly or air was trapped under the sheet. Lift the nearest unsealed section carefully, spread a thinner coat, and press air outward before continuing.
Dark tea blotches obscure notes Tea pooled before blotting. Test first, brush smaller sections, and blot immediately with a clean paper towel.
Edges curl upward The print dried unevenly or the perimeter received too little adhesive. Weight the edge flat while it dries, then add a small amount of glue under the lifted area and reseal.
Panel bows The broad sheet was not adequately supported or absorbed moisture unevenly. Add or reposition back cross-strips on a future build; keep the mounted sign level while drying.
Frame covers the notation Strips were not dry-fitted against the print dimensions. Measure the visible artwork before fastening and trim the frame pieces to preserve the planned border.

Budget realistically

Reported figure What it means
Under $20 total Lauren’s personal project cost in the 2015 Bless’er House tutorial, updated in 2023; not a current market average.
About $13 Her reported total when scrap particle board was reused; personal historical experience.
A little over $3 Her reported price for the 24 × 36-inch engineer print at that time and location; not a current quote.

Your current total will depend on new versus scrap wood, local cutting charges, stain, glue, hardware and the print provider’s paper and oversize fees. Price the panel, framing strips and print separately so a change in one does not conceal the cost of the others.

Install and care for the finished sign

Wait until the top coat is fully cured, not merely dry to the touch. Attach hanging hardware to the reinforced back or to a frame rail rather than relying on the thin face material. Keep the sign away from persistent dampness and direct sunlight, which can discolor paper and weaken adhesives over time. Dust with a dry, soft cloth; do not spray cleaner onto the paper.

If you move the sign, support it from underneath with both hands. A large panel can flex even when the back strips have reduced bowing, and flexing is most likely to stress the paper at the edges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision checklist

  • Is your panel exactly matched to the print dimensions?
  • Have you chosen particle board for texture or plywood for a smoother face?
  • Are the back cross-strips and perimeter frame fastened without face-puncturing nails?
  • Did you decide whether the paper will be tea-aged or left clean?
  • Has the tea-aged print dried overnight before glue-up?
  • Did you confirm the score’s public-domain status, license or other lawful basis for reproduction?
  • Did the copy shop confirm dimensions, scaling and its reproduction policy?
  • Is the hanging hardware rated for the completed panel?
