A DIY roll-out island bench is a worktop or cabinet mounted on casters: pull it into the kitchen when you need preparation space, then lock it in place or push it back against a wall. The most practical build choices are an open cart with shelves and hooks or a cabinet-style rollout that looks like fixed cabinetry when closed. Choose the format from your storage needs, available floor area, finished work height and the weight you expect it to carry.
This guide combines a paint-ready construction sequence with the dimensions, materials and mobility details documented by several published plans. Treat every measurement and estimate as belonging to that particular design, not as a universal rule.

Two forms cover most DIY roll-out island benches. An open cart leaves its shelf, frame and hooks visible, so it is comparatively easy to build and useful for towels, pans or frequently used equipment. A cabinet-style rollout encloses storage and can read as part of the kitchen when retracted; a custom version described by Fine Homebuilding uses a butcher-block top and swiveling casters.
| Approach | Best when | Trade-offs to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Open cart | You want the simplest frame, visible shelves and quick access to stored items. | Contents remain visible and the cart needs careful bracing so it does not rack while rolling. |
| Cabinet-style rollout | You want concealed storage or a unit that blends with existing cabinetry. | It requires more accurate carcass work, door or drawer clearances and attention to where the caster brakes can be reached. |
Do not select a plan solely by its advertised countertop size. First record the wall, appliance and doorway conditions that the bench must pass, then decide whether open or enclosed storage earns the space it occupies.

Set the footprint and finished height from your kitchen
Published dimensions are useful starting points. This Old House documents a 25-by-50-inch butcher-block work surface for an open mobile island. A separate FreeCutList.app template describes a 36-inch overall height using 4.5-inch casters and a 1.5-inch top. Those figures describe two specific designs; they are not a required island standard.
- Measure the place where the bench will be stored, including baseboard projections, radiator covers and door swings.
- Measure the route to the working position. Check the narrowest doorway or turn rather than relying on the room’s largest dimension.
- Choose a comfortable work height by comparing the proposed top with the counters you already use. Add the top thickness and caster height to the frame height before cutting.
- Mark the caster footprint on the floor with tape. Roll a cardboard mock-up through the route and turn it where the finished island will turn.
- Plan access to every wheel brake. A brake that ends up against a wall is effectively unusable.
There is no universal aisle clearance or safe height for every kitchen. Leave the clearance your own appliances, doors and walking pattern require, and verify it with the mock-up before committing to plywood.

Materials and tools for a paint-ready build
RONA’s rolling-island guide lists the following project-specific quantities: four 10-foot 2×4 spruce studs, two 48-by-96-inch plywood sheets, a 39-by-96-inch wood countertop, #8 2½-inch and #8 1-inch wood screws, stain and sealant, 120-grit sandpaper and four locking caster wheels. Use its list only with that plan’s cut list; a different footprint will change the yield.
| Category | Items to prepare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | 2×4 lumber, plywood panels, screws and any shelf or stretcher stock. | Forms the frame and resists racking when the cart starts and stops. |
| Worktop | Butcher block or another suitable wood countertop blank. | Provides the finished work surface; its thickness changes the final height. |
| Mobility | Four locking swivel casters, mounting hardware and backing material if required by the chosen wheel. | Lets the bench move and then stay put. Select capacity from the caster maker’s specification for the loaded island. |
| Finish | Stain or paint system, compatible primer, clear sealant where appropriate, rags and 120-grit paper. | Protects the frame and gives the painted parts a durable, cleanable surface. |
| Tools | Tape measure, pencil, carpenter’s square, safety goggles, miter saw, circular or table saw, sander, drill-driver, rubber mallet, drop cloth and stain brush. | Covers accurate layout, cutting, fastening, sanding and finishing. |
Buy the caster hardware only after you know the actual base dimensions and mounting-hole pattern. The sources do not establish one universal load rating or fastening pattern. Add the finished bench, top, stored cookware and any person leaning on it when checking the manufacturer’s stated capacity, and follow its installation instructions.
Build sequence: frame, panels, top and wheels
1. Make a full-size cutting plan
Copy the dimensions from the design you have selected onto a cut list. Label every piece by position—front rail, rear rail, side, shelf support and panel—so similar-looking parts do not get swapped. Account for the top and caster heights in the frame calculation, and mark the finished face of painted panels.

2. Cut and square the lumber
Wear eye protection, support long stock and make all repeated cuts with a stop or a clearly marked reference. After each cut, check the end with a square. Small errors accumulate in a mobile cabinet, where a leaning frame can make a caster lift or a door bind.

3. Assemble the base frame on a flat surface
Lay the rails and legs on a level floor, clamp the joints, pre-drill near board ends and drive the specified screws. Measure both diagonals of the rectangle; adjust until they match before tightening. Add intermediate stretchers or shelf supports wherever the selected plan calls for them. The aim is a rigid box, not merely four connected corners.
4. Add plywood sides, back and shelves
Dry-fit each panel, mark the face that will be painted and fasten it without forcing a bowed sheet into alignment. A back panel or diagonal bracing greatly reduces side-to-side movement. For an open cart, leave the shelf and hook areas accessible; for a cabinet rollout, keep the carcass square while installing the enclosed panels.
5. Prepare the worktop
Inspect the butcher block for defects, sand the edges and ease sharp corners. Center the top on the base with the overhang specified by your plan, then attach it from below so screw heads do not appear on the work surface. Predrill and use fasteners long enough to hold but short enough not to break through the top.
6. Reinforce the caster mounting area
Casters transmit rolling and braking forces into a small area. Provide a solid, flat mounting surface at each corner; add blocking or a second layer of plywood if the selected wheel’s instructions require it. Do not substitute a guessed screw size or hole pattern. Mark the swivel envelopes so the wheels can turn without striking a stretcher or panel.

7. Install and orient the four locking casters
Install all four wheels, then set the bench on a protected floor and operate every brake. The FreeCutList.app design notes put both locking casters on the same side for easier brake access; treat that as a feature of that template, not a universal requirement. If your layout puts the brakes on different sides, make sure you can reach them when the island is in its working position.
8. Test movement before finishing
Roll the unloaded bench over the actual kitchen floor, through the storage route and around the planned turns. The same cut-list guidance recommends rubber wheels for hardwood and testing on the real floor. Listen for frame flex, watch for caster chatter and confirm that the top does not collide with handles or countertops. Correct alignment now, before paint or sealant makes repairs slower.
9. Sand, fill and mask for painting
Remove the top or mask it carefully if it will receive a different finish. Sand frame and plywood faces, break sharp exposed edges, fill screw holes and allow filler to dry before sanding flush. Vacuum dust, wipe according to the coating maker’s directions and protect the floor with a drop cloth. A clean substrate matters more than adding extra coats over contamination.
10. Apply the coating and reassemble
Prime bare wood and end grain with a product compatible with your chosen topcoat. Apply thin, even coats, respect the stated recoat time and sand lightly only when the product instructions call for it. Paint the underside and inside faces that will be visible when the bench rolls out. Let the coating cure, reinstall the top and hardware, then retest the brakes and movement with a realistic load.

Paint the carcass, not a food-preparation surface by default
A painted base can coordinate with the kitchen while keeping the worktop repairable. Use a primer suited to the substrate—especially plywood edges and knots—and a hard-wearing trim or cabinet coating. Seal exposed cut edges before the final coats, because end grain absorbs moisture and can telegraph through paint.

Choose the top finish according to its use
If the butcher-block top will be used as a cutting surface, This Old House advises considering mineral oil rather than stain or urethane; see its project guidance at the project page. That is a project-specific finishing recommendation, not a general food-safety certification. If the top is strictly a serving or appliance surface, follow the finish manufacturer’s preparation, cure and maintenance directions and keep that finish separate from the painted carcass system.
Plan for touch-ups
Store a labeled sample of the paint and note the sheen. Rolling exposes lower rails and corners to knocks, so a small touch-up kit is more useful than trying to repaint the whole island after every chip. Do not drag the bench while a coating is still soft; lift or roll it only after the stated cure period.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Caster selection, floor protection and stability
Locking casters are used in the documented This Old House and RONA mobile designs. Wheel material, diameter, swivel behavior and brake placement should match your floor and your ability to reach the locks. Rubber wheels are suggested for hardwood in the FreeCutList.app notes, while the same source says to test on the actual floor. Those are useful design notes, not guarantees for every finish or tile.
- Confirm the caster manufacturer’s load rating and installation requirements for the complete, loaded island.
- Use all four wheels specified by your design; removing or downsizing one changes the load distribution.
- Check that the brakes lock both rolling and swivel movement if that is what the wheel specification promises.
- Inspect the floor for grit, thresholds and grout lines that could stop a small wheel abruptly.
- Engage the brakes before chopping, kneading or leaning on the top, and disengage them before pushing.
Because the available plans do not publish a universal engineering calculation, do not infer that a particular wheel size is safe for every cabinet, top or floor. When the loaded weight is uncertain, weigh components or obtain a conservative calculation from the caster supplier.
Cost and time: use estimates only for the named designs
| Published estimate | What it covers | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| About $175 and about five hours | This Old House’s open mobile island project, page updated June 3, 2026. | An estimate for that project’s materials and build, not a promise for a different size, region or finish. |
| About $300 in materials and about 20 hours | A separate GoodDIYPlans digital rolling butcher-block cart listing. | A commercial listing estimate for its own plan; it is not an independent benchmark. |

Troubleshoot before the bench enters service
The island wobbles when a brake is locked
Check that all four caster plates sit flat and that the base is square. A twisted frame, a proud screw head or a soft floor pad can lift one wheel. Remove the load, correct the mounting surface and retest; do not compensate by wedging a loose object under a caster.
The cart rolls straight but will not turn
Look for a stretcher, panel or adjacent appliance inside the swivel envelope. Confirm that the wheels are actually swivel casters and that their plates are oriented as intended. Mark the required turning path on the floor and adjust the layout rather than forcing the handle or top.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Dust, unprimed end grain, incompatible coatings and insufficient cure time are common causes. Sand back loose material, clean thoroughly, prime the exposed substrate and recoat within the product’s preparation and temperature limits. Keep the top finish separate from the paint system.
The top feels loose after seasonal changes
Inspect the underside fasteners and the top’s movement allowance specified by the countertop maker. Tighten only enough to secure the worktop without crushing the wood or locking up expected movement. Replace stripped screws with the approved repair method rather than simply driving a larger fastener at random.
Use and maintenance checklist
- Lock every brake before using knives, mixers or heavy appliances.
- Keep the load within the caster maker’s stated capacity and distribute it across the shelves.
- Lift or roll over thresholds; do not yank the island by its top.
- Wipe spills promptly, especially at plywood edges and painted joints.
- Inspect caster plates, screws, brakes and frame joints periodically, and retighten only when the hardware is secure and undamaged.
- Recoat or oil the worktop according to the selected finish’s instructions, not according to the paint schedule.
A cardboard route test, a square frame, correctly specified casters and a fully cured finish do more for a successful roll-out island bench than copying a dimension without checking your kitchen. Build around the actual floor, storage position and working load, then make the painted carcass and top finishes serve those uses.
