Build this full-size scalloped mirror by stacking three progressively smaller frames cut from 1/2-inch MDF. Trace repeatable scallops with a round lid, cut the curves with a narrow jigsaw blade, sand until the edges are smooth, and glue the layers into a stepped frame. Lattice or similar trim creates the rabbet that supports the mirror; primer, paint and several lacquer coats complete the finish. Because the finished MDF assembly can be heavy, select wall hardware for its measured weight and your wall construction rather than copying a cleat rating from another project.

What the triple-layer design actually is
This is not one thick board with a scalloped face. It is a three-level frame: a large bottom layer, a slightly smaller middle layer and a smaller top layer. Each layer has its own scalloped outside edge and a rectangular opening cut from the center. When the pieces are glued together, the stepped edges create the architectural outline and a broad surface for decorative trim.
The original maker worked from 1/2-inch MDF and used a round lid as a tracing guide so every scallop had the same radius. The pattern was carried across all four sides, with the corner transitions shaped separately. A 45-degree reference and a framing square helped transfer the layout around each corner; where lines met, the intersections were rounded instead of left as sharp points.

The published project does not give finished mirror dimensions. Treat the proportions below as a pattern system, then choose the overall rectangle to suit the room, the mirror you can obtain and the wall that will carry it.
Materials, tools and decisions before cutting
| Item | Purpose | Decision or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2-inch MDF | Three frame layers | Buy enough sheet area for three nested rectangles and test your layout before cutting. |
| Round lid or other rigid circle | Repeatable scallop template | Use one diameter consistently; a larger or smaller lid changes the character of the frame. |
| Jigsaw with a narrow curve or scroll-work blade | Outside scallops and inner openings | The source maker used the slow setting and a blade intended for curves. |
| Framing square, tape measure and 45-degree reference | Pattern transfer and corner alignment | These keep the scallops continuous as the layout turns each corner. |
| Sandpaper | Smoothing MDF cuts and finish preparation | The maker reports spending hours sanding; no numerical time estimate is established. |
| Wood glue and nails | Joining layers and trim | Use fasteners only where they will not interfere with the mirror or remain visible after finishing. |
| Lattice and decorative cabinet moulding | Mirror ledge and stepped decoration | Lattice forms the resting rabbet in the original build; moulding is an added visual detail. |
| Primer, spray paint and spray lacquer | Sealing MDF and protecting the color | The reported finish used primer, 220-grit sanding, spray paint and about four lacquer coats. |
| Mirror cut to the finished opening | Reflective panel | Measure after the frame is assembled. The source does not specify glass thickness or dimensions. |
| Wall hanger and safety anchor | Installation | Choose a system rated for the actual finished weight and appropriate for the wall; a French cleat was used in the source project. |
Have eye protection, hearing protection and a suitable mask available for MDF dust. Work in a well-ventilated area when cutting, sanding, painting or using adhesive. Keep the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular blade, finish and mirror adhesive at hand; products vary.
Lay out the three scalloped rectangles
1. Establish the outside rectangles
Draw the largest rectangle on the MDF with enough border for the scalloped profile and the frame opening. Transfer a smaller rectangle for the middle layer and a smaller one again for the top. The layers must remain concentric so the reveal is even after stacking. Label each piece immediately; once the centers are removed, similarly shaped parts can be confusing.
2. Set the scallop rhythm
On the bottom layer, the source layout has nine scallops along each long side and six along each short side, not counting the corner scallops. The middle layer has eight on each long side and five on each short side. The top layer has seven on each long side and four on each short side. These decreasing counts make the tiers read as separate steps. Mark the side divisions lightly before tracing the lid.

3. Trace and resolve the corners
Place the round lid at each mark, keeping its edge tangent to the intended side line. At a corner, add the corner scallops and use the 45-degree reference and framing square to carry the pattern onto the adjacent side. Round the meeting point so there is no abrupt notch. Before cutting, walk around the entire perimeter with a pencil and check that every scallop is complete, evenly spaced and connected to the next one.
4. Mark the inner openings
Use the finished scallop line as your reference, then mark the inner rectangle approximately 1.5 inches in from the scallop cuts, as in the original project. Keep the opening large enough for the mirror and wide enough to leave a structurally sound frame. If your mirror has already been purchased, measure it now and adjust the opening for the retaining ledge you plan to build.
Cut the MDF without losing the curve
- Clamp the MDF securely to a stable work surface, supporting the waste so it cannot fall and tear the last section of a cut.
- Install a narrow blade made for curves or scroll work. Set the jigsaw to its slow setting, the approach used in the source build.
- Cut the outside profile first. Let the blade advance at its own rate; forcing a tight scallop can make the blade wander or leave faceted curves.
- Drill a starter hole inside each rectangular opening, insert the blade and cut out the waste. Keep the inner cuts square at the corners so the mirror ledge will sit consistently.
- Repeat the process for the middle and top layers, checking each piece against the one below it before moving on.
Do not expect the jigsaw edge to be ready for paint. MDF fibers swell and small flats show strongly on a decorative silhouette, so plan for a separate edge-preparation stage.
Sand, dry-fit and glue the three layers
Sand before assembly
Sand every scallop, inside edge and face that will be painted. Remove loose fibers and soften tiny transitions where adjacent scallops meet. The maker describes this as hours of sanding, which is a useful planning warning even though no measured duration is given. Vacuum dust between grits and inspect the profile in raking light; shadows reveal flats that are difficult to see straight on.

Dry-fit the stack
Place the largest frame down, center the middle frame on it, and add the top. Measure the reveal at several scallops on every side. Correct an uneven reveal now by sanding or adjusting the layout; glue will make the alignment permanent. Confirm that the inner openings line up and that the mirror will not be blocked by a misplaced layer.
Glue the layers
Apply wood glue to the contact areas, align the pieces and clamp or weight them according to the glue manufacturer’s instructions. Wipe squeeze-out before it cures, especially in the scallop valleys where dried glue can cast a visible shadow. If you use nails to hold the layers while the glue sets, place them where later trim or paint will conceal them and avoid driving through the future mirror opening.
Build the mirror ledge and add trim
A frame needs a positive way to retain the mirror; simply resting glass against MDF is not a secure installation. In the original build, lattice was attached around the back of the opening to form a rabbet or ledge. Cut the strips to meet cleanly, check that the mirror sits flat without rocking, and leave enough clearance for the mirror thickness and any adhesive system you select.
Decorative cabinet moulding can then be added to the face or stepped perimeter. Test-fit each length around the scallops before applying glue or nails. Curved transitions and corner joints deserve extra attention because small gaps become obvious once a contrasting paint color is applied. Seal or fill fastener holes with a compatible filler, then sand them flush.

Another scalloped-frame method uses back strips for the rabbet, front moulding and lattice to hide the layered edge. It also uses mirror mastic to attach the mirror and paints the frame area visible in the reflection. That is an alternative construction, not a specification for this exact three-layer build: verify that any adhesive is approved for mirrors and follow its cure and ventilation requirements.

Prime every exposed MDF edge
MDF edges absorb finish much faster than faces. Apply a suitable primer to the scalloped perimeter, inner opening, trim and any exposed back edge. Let it dry according to the label, then sand smooth. Pay particular attention to end grain at the valleys and to nail or filler repairs; these areas telegraph through glossy paint if they are not sealed.

Sand with 220-grit paper
The source maker sanded the primed project with 220-grit paper before color. Use light pressure so you do not flatten the scallops. Remove all dust with the method recommended for your primer and paint. A clean surface matters more than adding another coat to a dusty one.
Spray the color in controlled passes
Spray paint reaches the recesses of the scallops more evenly than a heavily loaded brush, but overspray and runs are real risks. Support the mirror frame so you can reach the inside edge, keep the can at the label’s distance, and build color in multiple light passes. Paint the back edge and the area that can appear in the mirror’s reflection; an unpainted strip can be visible from the front.

Protect the finish with lacquer
The reported project received about four coats of spray lacquer. Treat that as the maker’s finish schedule, not a universal number: the required coats depend on the lacquer, color, sheen and intended wear. Respect the recoat window and ventilation directions on your product, and allow the finish to harden before handling the frame or setting in the mirror.
Install the mirror and plan the wall attachment
Fit and retain the mirror
Test the mirror in the completed rabbet before applying adhesive. It should rest evenly on the lattice ledge without point pressure. Use only a mirror-compatible mastic or other retention method specified for your glass and backing; ordinary construction adhesives can damage reflective coatings. If the design uses clips or a mechanical back, confirm that they cannot contact the glass edge.

Choose hardware from the real load
The maker says the completed MDF mirror was heavy and reports hanging it with an OOK Hangman French cleat. The project does not report the finished weight, mirror dimensions, cleat size or load rating, so that example cannot serve as a universal specification. Weigh your completed piece, include the mirror and trim, and select a cleat, rail or other hanger with a suitable margin for that load and your wall type.
Find structure before drilling
Use a stud finder and check for wiring or pipes before drilling for a safety anchor. Secure the wall-side hardware to a stud when the layout permits; otherwise use an anchor rated for the wall material and the measured load. Install the frame-side and wall-side components level, engage the cleat fully, and add a secondary safety restraint if your hardware instructions call for one. Have a second person support this large, fragile object while it is lifted onto the hanger.
What this project costs and how long it takes
The original maker reported a project cost of about $90 in 2018. That is one person’s historical estimate, based partly on supplies she already owned, not a current budget or a price promise. MDF sheet size, mirror cutting, trim, paint and wall hardware can change the total substantially in your area.
No numeric build-time study is available. The only time detail supplied by the maker is that sanding took hours. Cutting three profiles, refining the edges, waiting through glue and finish stages, and fitting the mirror all make this a multi-session project rather than a quick afternoon craft.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon failure points and fixes
- Scallops do not line up: Stop before gluing, re-center the layers and compare reveals at multiple points. Correct the layout or sand selectively while the pieces are separate.
- Jagged or flat curves: Replace a dull or unsuitable blade, slow the feed rate and sand the profile with a small sanding block or shaped abrasive.
- Visible MDF fuzz after painting: Seal the edges with primer, let it dry fully and sand with 220 grit before recoating.
- Mirror rocks in the opening: Recheck the lattice rabbet for a high joint or uneven strip. Level the support before using an approved mirror-retention method.
- Trim joints show gaps: Dry-fit every piece, refine the cut, then fill only with a product compatible with your primer and paint.
- Frame feels unsafe on the wall: Remove it and reassess the measured weight, hardware rating, anchor type and stud engagement. Do not compensate for uncertain capacity by simply adding random screws.
When a different build makes more sense
| Approach | What changes | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Triple-layer MDF frame | Three nested scalloped MDF profiles, a trim-built rabbet and a full mirror | You want the stepped, full-size statement silhouette and are prepared for substantial sanding and wall load. |
| Plywood with acrylic mirror tiles | A related guide uses plywood and small acrylic tiles in a grid instead of one cut glass mirror | You want to avoid cutting glass and accept a different, tiled design; it is not a direct replacement for this frame. |
| 1:12 miniature | Mat board or thick card, basswood strips, plastic mirror sheet, tacky glue and craft or spray paint | You need a dollhouse-scale version. The miniature process, template and materials should not be mixed into the full-size bill of materials. |
For any alternative, compare the substrate’s weight, how accurately it can hold the curves, how the mirror is retained, the amount of finishing work and the wall hardware required. Those five decisions determine whether the decorative outline remains practical after it leaves the workbench.
Quick Recap
Final pre-hang checklist
- All three layers are centered and fully bonded.
- Scallop edges and inner opening are smooth under the finish.
- Primer, color and protective coats cover exposed MDF, trim and reflection-visible areas.
- The mirror rests on a continuous, level ledge and is secured with a compatible retention method.
- The hanger and anchors are rated for the measured finished weight and suit the wall construction.
- Wiring and plumbing were checked before drilling, and the frame is lifted by two people.
