Build a DIY wardrobe successfully by choosing the right construction type first, measuring the room at several points, designing around your actual clothing, and anchoring the finished carcass to suitable studs or masonry. An open freestanding unit is the most forgiving first project; fitted and built-in wardrobes look more integrated but demand accurate scribing, leveling, and fixing.

| Type | Best for | Advantages | Challenges | Wall attachment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open freestanding | Rentals, dorm rooms, bedrooms, entryways, or a first woodworking project | Simplest carcass, easy access, no door hardware, and it can be moved | Clothing remains visible and the unit can tip if it is not secured | Recommended to studs or masonry for stability |
| Enclosed freestanding | Rooms that need concealed storage without permanent fitting | Can be moved and hides clothing | Doors add clearance, weight, hinges or tracks, and alignment work | Usually secured to prevent tipping |
| Fitted | An alcove or one wall where the cabinet should follow the room | Uses available width efficiently and can be trimmed around obstructions | Uneven walls, floors, and ceilings require scribing and careful leveling | Fixed to appropriate studs or masonry |
| Built-in | A long-term, room-integrated installation | Most seamless appearance and maximum use of the space | Least forgiving to errors, harder to remove, and often needs more trim and finishing | Permanent or near-permanent fixing to the structure |
A freestanding design is not automatically safe without fixing. Tall, narrow furniture can overturn when a door or drawer is pulled, so include an anti-tip connection in the design even when you intend to move the wardrobe later. For a fitted or built-in project, plan the fixing and the sequence of scribing before buying sheet goods.
Measure the room and your clothes
Record the opening at several points
Measure height, width, and depth rather than assuming that a wall or alcove is square. Screwfix advises taking measurements at three points—such as left, center, and right for width, and floor, middle, and ceiling for height. Record the smallest usable measurement for a fitted unit, then allow the clearance needed to level and trim it. Check corners with a square and check the floor and ceiling with a level. A room can look straight while differing enough to prevent a tall carcass from entering or a door from aligning.
Confirm access and service clearances
- Measure the route through doors, stairways, and turns if you will assemble the wardrobe elsewhere.
- Locate skirting boards, radiators, sockets, switches, vents, and pipes before fixing a back or side panel.
- Mark the door opening and the area in front of the wardrobe. Hinged doors need their swing zone; sliding doors need room for a level track and the track depth.
- Decide whether the unit must be removable from a rental or whether trim can be scribed permanently to the wall.
Set dimensions around the contents
Screwfix presents 550–580 mm of clear internal depth and a finished height of 2000–2300 mm as useful recommendations within its guide. They are not universal requirements: folded garments, hanger orientation, door construction, and the room itself may justify different dimensions. The same guide gives about 1000 mm rail height for shirts and about 1500 mm for coats. Measure your longest garment on its hanger and add clearance rather than copying a number that does not suit your clothes.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Depth must be measured to the usable interior, not merely the outside of a box. A back panel, door, or sliding mechanism consumes some of the overall depth. If you use standard front-facing hangers, test one in a mock-up or against the proposed side panel to make sure sleeves and doors will not foul each other.
Draw the carcass before purchasing materials
- Draw the front, side, and plan views, showing outside dimensions and every shelf, divider, rail, door, and back panel.
- Write the clear opening between shelves and the rail centerline. Note which dimensions include material thickness.
- Mark which edges will be visible and which will meet another panel. This determines where you need a finished face, an edge band, or filler.
- Make a cut list with a part name, quantity, length, width, thickness, and grain direction. Keep a small allowance for trimming only where your design and material supply permit it.
- Lay out the parts on the actual boards or sheets you can buy. Revise the list before cutting if the layout creates excessive waste or a joint too close to an edge.
Select sheet goods, timber, and hardware
Plywood or MDF?
| Material | Where it fits | Strength and screw retention | Finish and edge work | Design cautions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plywood | Wide shelves, heavier loads, or a carcass that will be assembled and disassembled | Screwfix describes it as better suited to heavier or wider shelving and as offering useful screw retention | Can be painted, clear-finished, or edge-banded; face veneers may need careful sanding | Quality, thickness, and exposed edge appearance vary, so inspect the sheet before cutting |
| MDF | Economical painted carcasses and smooth, stable panels | Needs appropriate support on long spans; edge fasteners require care | Smooth and paint-ready faces, but exposed edges should be sealed before painting | It is heavy, dust-producing, and vulnerable to swelling if moisture reaches an unsealed edge |
These are the recommendations in Screwfix’s guide, not an independent laboratory comparison. Choose thickness and support spacing for the load you expect, the shelf span, and the fixing method. A thick shelf that is unsupported over a long span can still sag; a narrow shelf on frequent edge fasteners can still split.
Plan the hardware
- Wardrobe rail sized to the clear opening, plus rail holders or sockets rated for the expected load.
- Wood screws or pocket-hole screws suited to the material thickness; shorter screws or brad nails and wood glue may be useful for trim and light blocking.
- Hinges and handles for swing doors, or a complete sliding-door track and roller set for sliding doors.
- Leveling shims, filler strips, and trim for a fitted installation.
- Brackets and wall fixings selected for the actual substrate—studs, masonry, or another approved structural point.
- Edge sealer or primer for MDF, stain or paint, and the compatible topcoat.
Do not choose wall anchors by appearance alone. Fastener diameter, length, load rating, and installation method must match the wall material and the bracket instructions.

Basic tools
A measuring tape, square, pencil, safety glasses, drill, and circular saw cover the basic tool list in Ana White’s beginner plan. A level, clamps, drill bits for pilot holes and countersinks, a stud finder or masonry detector, sanding equipment, and a stable cutting support make a larger or fitted build safer and easier to align.

A proven open freestanding plan: the Ana White example
Ana White labels her open wardrobe a beginner woodworking plan for a dorm room, bedroom, rental, or entryway. It uses 2×4 uprights, 1×12 shelving, and a hanging section. The figures below are the shopping list and cut list for that particular plan; changing the height, width, shelf spacing, or material changes the quantities.
Shopping list for that plan
- Six 2×4 boards at 8 feet long, or five 2×4 boards at 10 feet long.
- Two 1×12 boards at 6 feet long.
- One 1×8 board at 8 feet long.
- Screws or pocket-hole screws.
- Shorter screws or brad nails and wood glue.
- Stain.
- Closet-rod holders and one 30-inch closet rod.
Published cut list
| Part | Quantity | Cut length | Nominal stock | Use in the plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upright pieces | Six | 60 inches | 2×4 | Vertical members for the three ladder frames |
| Short frame pieces | Fifteen | 11½ inches | 2×4 | Crosspieces and blocking in the ladder frames |
| Top pieces | Two | 47¾ inches | 1×8 | Top of the open unit |
| Bottom and upper shelf | Two | 47¾ inches | 1×12 | Bottom and upper shelf |
| Middle shelves | Two | 18 inches | 1×12 | Shorter shelves in the hanging-and-storage layout |
Assembly sequence
- Cut and label every part. Compare each piece with the list before drilling so a wrong cut is found before it is built into a frame.
- Build three ladder frames from the 2×4 uprights and 11½-inch pieces. Use a square at every joint and keep the frames on a flat surface while the glue sets.
- Add the blocking specified by the plan to stiffen the frames and provide fastening points for shelves.
- Attach the top and bottom shelves, checking that the three frames remain parallel and the assembly is not racking.
- Install the remaining shelves and the closet-rod holders, then fit the 30-inch rod.
- Sand, stain, and anchor the completed unit before loading clothing.
The plan is useful because it provides a complete beginner-oriented sequence, but its dimensions are not a substitute for measuring your room. If your available wall is narrower than 47¾ inches, your rod length, shelf length, and frame spacing must all be redesigned together.
Another reference point: a 48-by-24-by-72-inch cabinet
RealWoodWorkPlans publishes a separate freestanding cabinet example measuring 48 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 72 inches high. Use those dimensions only when that plan’s proportions suit your room, clothing, and material. They are a reference design, not a recommended universal size. A 24-inch outside depth may provide less than 24 inches of usable interior space after the back, side panels, doors, or tracks are included.
Build the carcass accurately
Prepare and label parts
Cut on a supported surface with the good face oriented consistently. Mark the front edge, top edge, and part number on every panel. For veneered plywood, keep the best face outward; for MDF, decide which edges will be visible before sealing. Dry-fit the major panels on the floor and verify the overall width, depth, and diagonals.

Screwfix advises pilot holes near edges. Drill a pilot hole sized for the screw core and keep sufficient distance from an edge for the material and fastener. Countersink where a screw head must sit flush, but do not remove so much material that the face weakens. In MDF, seal exposed edges before finishing; in plywood, avoid driving a screw into a thin veneer edge without a suitable pilot hole.

Square the assembly before adhesive sets
- Assemble the first side, divider, or ladder frame loosely enough to make small corrections.
- Place the top, bottom, and shelves, then clamp or temporarily brace the carcass.
- Measure both diagonals of the rectangular opening. If they differ, push the longer diagonal corner inward until the measurements match.
- Recheck level and plumb on the floor or against the wall.
- Only then tighten fasteners and allow glue to cure according to its label.
A square carcass is essential for doors. A small error at the bottom becomes a visibly uneven gap at the top, and a sliding track that follows a crooked line can bind.
Fit shelves, rails, and internal storage
Shelves
Set shelf spacing from the garments you actually fold. Leave enough hand clearance to remove a stack without scraping the shelf above it. Support long or heavily loaded shelves with a divider, cleat, bracket, or closer support spacing rather than relying on the panel alone. If shelves are adjustable, drill a consistent row of holes before assembly and keep the holes clear of edge fasteners.
Hanging rails
Position a shirt rail around the 1000 mm height suggested by Screwfix only if it leaves useful space below and above in your layout. A coat rail around 1500 mm may suit long garments, but measure your longest item first. Use two rail supports when the span and load require them, and attach each support to a solid side panel, divider, or blocking rather than only to a thin back.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Mixed layouts
Combining a short hanging bay with shelves often uses a small room better than one full-height rail. Draw the hanging bay width, shelf widths, and vertical clearances as a single elevation so that a divider does not consume the rod length you assumed.
Choose and install doors
| Door approach | Front clearance | What installation demands | Typical reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| No doors | None beyond access to the shelves | Neat shelf edges, clothing organization, and secure anchoring | Lowest complexity and fastest access |
| Hinged doors | Space for the door leaf to swing across the room | Accurate hinge cup or screw positions, an even carcass, and aligned reveals | Simple hardware and full opening access when the room has clearance |
| Sliding doors | Less swing space in front | Extra track depth, a level top and bottom track, adequate overlap, and careful roller adjustment | Clear floor area is limited and the added depth can be accommodated |
For hinged doors, mark hinge positions from the same reference edge on every door and keep the carcass plumb before adjusting hinges. For sliding doors, install the track only after confirming that the opening is level from end to end. Follow the chosen hardware manufacturer’s spacing, weight, and adjustment instructions; generic dimensions cannot account for every track system.
Anchor the wardrobe to the room
Screwfix recommends fixing the wardrobe to suitable studs or masonry with appropriate brackets and fixings. RealWoodWorkPlans also discusses anchoring a freestanding unit. Locate the structural fixing point, place the bracket where it cannot interfere with a door or shelf, and use a screw or anchor approved for that substrate. If the wall is masonry, use the correct drill bit and plug or anchor system; if it is framed, fasten into the stud rather than only into plasterboard. Check that the wardrobe remains level after anchoring, because tightening a bracket can pull a lightweight carcass out of square.

- Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
- The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
- The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
- These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
For a fitted unit, use shims to remove gaps at an uneven floor or wall, then scribe filler strips to the actual surface. Do not force a panel against a bowed wall and assume the screws will straighten it; that can twist the carcass and make doors bind.
Finish the wood and protect the edges
- Sand faces and visible edges progressively until they are smooth enough for the chosen finish.
- Seal MDF edges before primer; they absorb finish differently from the faces and can remain fuzzy or swollen if left unsealed.
- Remove dust, then apply stain, paint, or clear finish compatible with the material and the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Let each coat dry before installing clothing, rails, or doors.
- Touch up exposed screw holes, trim joints, and cut edges after the final assembly check.
Ana White’s open plan lists stain, while a painted MDF carcass may need primer and more than one topcoat. The finish is a design choice, not a reason to change the structural dimensions.
Budget and procurement without surprises
No single price applies because board costs, finish, hardware, and local labor vary. Build a project budget from the actual cut list rather than from the wardrobe’s outside dimensions alone.
- Structure: plywood, MDF, or timber for uprights, sides, shelves, dividers, and any back.
- Hardware: screws, glue, shelf supports, rail holders, a rod, hinges or sliding gear, handles, and wall brackets.
- Consumables: pilot bits, sanding sheets, filler, primer, edge sealer, stain or paint, and protective coverings.
- Waste and transport: allow for the supplier’s board sizes, saw kerf, damaged edges, and getting long panels into the room.
Compare the price of a complete sheet with the cost of many narrow boards, but do not substitute a cheaper thickness if it reduces shelf support or screw engagement. The Ana White list is economical partly because it uses standard 2×4 and nominal shelf boards; a fitted wardrobe with doors and trim has a different material profile.
Troubleshoot common problems
The carcass rocks
Check the floor first, then the diagonals. Add non-compressible shims under the low corner, retighten fasteners while the carcass is square, and anchor it. Do not hide rocking with a loose decorative trim.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A shelf sags
Reduce the unsupported span, add a divider or cleat, use a thicker panel, or reduce the load. Tightening screws cannot correct a shelf whose section is too flexible for its span.

A door rubs or gaps change
Measure the diagonals and check plumb. Correct the carcass before making fine hinge adjustments. On a sliding door, verify that both tracks are level and that the rollers are adjusted as specified.
MDF edges look swollen after painting
Sand the raised fibers once dry, seal the edge thoroughly, prime again, and keep the panel away from moisture. If swelling has changed the part’s dimensions, replace or recut it rather than forcing the door or shelf into place.
The rod pulls out
Check that each holder is fastened into a structural side, divider, or blocking and that the span and load match the hardware. A longer rod may need a center support; adding screws to a weak edge will not provide the same result.
Recommended Free Tools
The unit will not fit the alcove
Recheck the three-point measurements and identify the tightest point. A fitted carcass may need a narrower body plus scribed fillers. Do not cut a second panel until you know whether the obstruction is a skirting board, a bowed wall, or a measurement error.
Safety and quality-control checklist
- Wear safety glasses when cutting, drilling, or driving fasteners; control dust according to the material and tool instructions.
- Support panels securely so a circular saw cannot bind or drop at the end of a cut.
- Keep hands clear of the blade path and disconnect power before changing a blade or bit.
- Confirm that screws will not hit hidden wiring or plumbing before drilling into a wall.
- Check level, plumb, square, and both diagonals before the glue cures and before installing doors.
- Anchor the completed wardrobe before loading it, and test that doors, shelves, and rails operate without rubbing or excessive movement.
- Load shelves and rails gradually, watching for deflection or loose fixings rather than assuming the nominal material size guarantees capacity.
Which design should you build?
Choose Ana White’s open freestanding concept when you need a beginner-friendly, visible storage unit and can adapt its 2×4, 1×12, and 1×8 parts to your room. Choose an enclosed freestanding cabinet when concealment matters and you have front clearance or track depth for doors. Choose a fitted or built-in carcass when every millimeter of an alcove matters and you are prepared to scribe, shim, level, and anchor it permanently. In every case, measure the actual room, design from the clothes outward, make a complete cut list, square the assembly before fastening, and secure the finished wardrobe to the structure behind the wall finish.
