A DIY range hood cover is a decorative enclosure built around a separate range hood or vent insert. The cover can turn an exposed appliance and duct into a piece of cabinetry or trim, but it does not provide ventilation itself. Start by measuring the appliance and the wall-to-ceiling space in your kitchen, then design the frame, panels, trim and finish around those measurements.
What a range hood cover does—and does not do
The woodwork hides the hood body, ductwork and mounting hardware while giving the cooking area a deliberate architectural focal point. Air still moves through the separately selected hood or insert, so the appliance remains responsible for capture, filtration, ducting, electrical connection and controls. Some projects wrap an already installed vent; others are designed around an insert chosen before construction.

That distinction affects every dimension. An enclosure that looks right on an empty wall can block a control, leave too little room for the blower, or prevent the duct from reaching its outlet. Treat the cover as finish carpentry around an appliance, not as a substitute for one.
Why every cover is a custom build
Range hood setups vary in width, depth, height, duct direction and mounting method. Cabinets, ceiling height, backsplash thickness and the distance from the cooktop to the ceiling vary as well. Angela Marie Made notes that hood arrangements differ and that board quantities depend on the hood measurements; the same principle applies to the finished enclosure.

Measure the actual vent and the installation site before buying sheet goods or cutting lumber. Published cut lists are examples from individual kitchens. They are useful for understanding construction, but they cannot be transferred to another wall without recalculation.
Record the appliance dimensions
- Measure the hood or insert’s overall width, depth and height, including any flanges, controls or mounting brackets that the cover must clear.
- Note where the duct exits and whether it runs vertically, horizontally or through a recirculating filter arrangement.
- Record the electrical connection location and the space needed to follow the appliance manufacturer’s installation instructions.
- Measure the distance from the cooking surface to the ceiling and to the underside of nearby cabinets.
Map the wall and ceiling
- Find the wall studs so the finished enclosure can be supported where it is hung.
- Check whether the wall is plumb and whether the ceiling or adjacent cabinets are level. An angle finder or sliding T-bevel helps transfer non-square angles to the frame.
- Decide how far the cover should project from the wall and how its top trim will meet the ceiling, cabinets or a planned gap.
- Mark the finished outside dimensions on the wall with painter’s tape. This reveals conflicts before you cut plywood.
Choose a profile before choosing materials
The enclosure can be a simple box, a tapered chimney, a three-sided cabinet-like shell or a more decorative surround. Select a profile that leaves the appliance accessible for service and gives the duct a clear route. A flat front is easiest to build and paint; stepped trim, geometric panels and tapered sides add visual weight but require more accurate cuts.
| Design decision | Questions to answer | Effect on the build |
|---|---|---|
| Appliance arrangement | Is the cover wrapping an installed vent or a separately selected insert? | An existing vent fixes the opening; an insert must be selected and its installation requirements incorporated first. |
| Profile | Box, chimney, tapered or cabinet-like? | Changes frame angles, panel sizes and the way the cover meets cabinets or ceiling. |
| Frame and panels | What lumber and sheet thickness suit the span and attachment points? | Determines stiffness, screw length, edge treatment and the amount of filler needed. |
| Surface treatment | Paint, stain, plaster-like coating or exposed trim? | Controls sanding, primer, caulk, clear coat and how visible joints will be. |
| Service access | How will the insert, filters and duct be reached later? | May require a removable trim piece or an interior clearance that is not visible from the room. |
Three documented approaches to adapt
Three-sided plywood enclosure with decorative trim
Home Hardware’s example uses 2×4 frames, plywood sides and front, pine trim, a geometric front detail and vertically trimmed sides. Its back remains open for the wall. The reported finished size is 33 × 45½ × 21¾ inches including top trim, built around a 30-inch-long, 20-inch-wide, 6-inch-tall vent. Those dimensions belong only to that example and are not a universal hood size.
Lightweight plywood and layered trim
Angela Marie Made lists ¼-inch plywood with 1×6, 1×2 and 2×2 lumber, plus lattice and optional 1×4 boards. The approach is suited to a custom surround whose quantities are calculated from the reader’s hood. Brad nails, screws, caulk, spackle and filler prepare the joints for paint or stain; polyurethane is listed when a clear protective coat is desired.

Half-inch plywood with a plaster-like surface
The Simple Cozy Haven example uses ½-inch plywood, glue and brad nails, then fills and primes the surface before applying a Roman-clay finish and white-oak trim. That cover was made over an existing vent. A plaster-like finish can disguise broad panel seams, but it still depends on a flat, well-prepared substrate.
Frame around a basic insert
Crystel Montenegro Home describes a custom cover framed around a basic insert in an example updated July 13, 2026. The useful takeaway is the order of operations: establish the insert and its required opening first, then build the visible shell around it rather than guessing an appliance opening from the outside profile.

Materials and tools: build your own list from the drawing
There is no universal shopping list. Use your measured drawing to calculate the panel areas, frame lengths and trim runs, then add a practical allowance for saw kerfs and mistakes. The following items appear in the documented builds and are starting points, not fixed quantities.
| Category | Examples from the projects | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet material | ¼-inch plywood, ½-inch plywood or 5/8-inch plywood | Choose thickness after accounting for frame spacing, edge visibility and the appliance’s mounting arrangement. |
| Framing | 2×2 or 2×4 lumber | Lay out enough structure to keep the shell rigid and provide solid screw locations. |
| Trim | 1×2, 1×4, 1×6, lattice or white-oak trim | Size trim to the desired reveal, shadow line and decorative pattern. |
| Fasteners and adhesives | 1½-inch wood screws, brad nails, carpenter’s glue | Match length to the material thickness so fasteners do not break through visible faces or interfere with the appliance. |
| Surface preparation | Wood filler, spackle, caulk, primer and sandpaper | Use filler for nail holes and seams, caulk for paintable joints, and primer appropriate to the final coating. |
| Finish | Paint, stain, polyurethane or Roman-clay-style coating | Choose based on the surrounding cabinets, the desired sheen and whether the trim remains natural. |
Home Hardware’s particular list contains two 8-foot 2×4s, six 10-foot 1×4 pine trims, one 12-foot 1×2, 5/8-inch plywood, 1½-inch wood screws, wood filler, carpenter’s glue and paint or stain. Its tools include a tape measure, table saw, miter saw, screw gun, nail gun, angle finder or sliding T-bevel, stud finder, palm sander, putty knife, brush or cloth and level. Buy those quantities only if your drawing produces the same cut plan.

Build the enclosure in a controlled sequence
1. Draw the finished outside dimensions
Show the front, both sides and top in a simple elevation drawing. Add the appliance opening, duct route, trim thickness and any taper. Dimension from a single reference edge so cumulative errors do not grow. Mark which edges will be visible after installation.
2. Cut and dry-fit the frames
Cut the top and bottom frames and any intermediate supports from the selected framing lumber. Assemble them on a flat surface, check diagonals for squareness and test-fit the appliance clearance. If the ceiling or cabinets are not square, transfer the measured angle rather than forcing a rectangular frame into the space.

3. Attach the plywood sides and front
Cut panels from the approved drawing, label their orientation and pre-fit them around the frame. Apply carpenter’s glue where appropriate, then secure with screws or brad nails suited to the material. Keep the back open when the design relies on the wall for closure, and do not cover a required service or duct opening.
4. Add trim and decorative details
Install the top cap, vertical side trim and front rails or geometric pieces after the shell is stable. A miter saw helps produce repeatable trim angles; a level keeps horizontal lines true. Leave the appliance opening at the exact size required by its documentation rather than letting decorative trim reduce it.

5. Fill, caulk and sand
Set nail heads, fill screw holes and smooth panel transitions. Sand in stages until your hand cannot detect a ridge under the intended finish. Caulk paintable inside corners and trim joints where a small gap would show. Remove dust before primer; dust left on the surface becomes visible texture under paint or clay coating.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare the surface for a professional paint finish
Painting success is mostly substrate preparation. Plywood edges absorb finish differently from faces, while end grain and filler patches can flash through a thin coat. Seal exposed edges, let filler dry fully and sand them flush. Prime the entire visible shell so color and sheen remain consistent across plywood, trim and filled areas.

Use a compatible primer followed by the selected paint. Lightly sand between coats if the product instructions call for it, and protect the cooktop and appliance opening from drips. A satin or semi-gloss appearance makes cleaning easier, while a lower sheen emphasizes surface irregularities less; choose what suits the surrounding cabinetry.
Stained wood and clear coat
Test stain on an offcut containing the same plywood and trim species. Different woods absorb color differently, and filler may not accept stain like bare wood. Apply polyurethane only after the stain is dry and use the product’s stated recoat and ventilation directions.

Plaster-like or Roman-clay-style finish
These coatings depend on a uniformly flat base. Fill seams broadly, sand transitions and prime before spreading the finish. Work in manageable sections so the texture remains intentional, and keep the appliance opening and control area free of buildup.
Hang the cover safely, then install the appliance
Home Hardware’s hanging method uses horizontal wall braces. Mark the enclosure position, locate the studs, fasten braces to structural framing, and lift the cover into place with another person. Secure the shell to the braces and verify level before tightening all fasteners. A heavy wood surround should never rely on drywall anchors alone when studs or other structural support are available.
Recommended Free Tools
- Transfer the measured bottom and side reference lines to the wall.
- Mark stud locations and install horizontal braces at the support points shown on your drawing.
- Lift the cover with help, protect finished edges and set it on the braces.
- Check level, plumb and alignment with cabinets or ceiling, then fasten through the frame into the braces or other verified structure.
- Install the hood or insert according to its manufacturer instructions, including duct, electrical and filter requirements.
- Test controls and airflow before closing any removable trim or access area.
The 28-inch minimum above the stove stated by Home Hardware applies to its particular project. It is not a universal clearance rule. Follow the appliance documentation and the requirements that apply in your location for the actual installation; the project example does not establish every reader’s code, duct-sizing or electrical requirements.
Common failure points and fixes
- The opening is the wrong size: Recheck the appliance’s installation drawing before cutting. If the shell is already built, do not force the insert; modify trim or panels while preserving the required clearance.
- The cover rocks on the wall: Check the wall for out-of-plumb conditions, shim the brace locations as needed and refasten into verified structural points.
- Trim joints show after painting: Refill, sand and caulk the joint, then spot-prime before applying another finish coat.
- Plywood edges telegraph through the finish: Seal and sand the edges, apply primer and inspect under angled light before final color.
- The duct or controls are inaccessible: Stop before closing the shell and revise the drawing to provide the clearance or removable trim required by the appliance.
- Decorative details crowd the hood: Keep the appliance opening dimensioned independently from the outside trim. Visual symmetry is secondary to the manufacturer’s clearance and service requirements.
A practical decision checklist before you cut
- Have you measured the installed vent or selected insert, rather than relying on a nominal width?
- Is the duct path and electrical connection accounted for in the drawing?
- Do the profile and trim stop short of controls, filters and required clearances?
- Are frame members aligned with studs or other planned support points?
- Have you chosen sheet thickness, fastener lengths and trim sizes that match the design?
- Will your chosen paint, stain or plaster-like coating work over the prepared plywood and trim?
- Can the appliance be serviced after the cover is installed?
- Have you checked the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local requirements before hanging and connecting the hood?
What a finished result should achieve
A successful DIY range hood cover is a measured shell that makes the ventilation appliance look built-in without compromising its function. The strongest projects separate the decisions: verify the appliance first, design the frame around real dimensions, build the plywood and trim accurately, prepare every visible surface, and finish it to suit the kitchen. The examples demonstrate several workable material and style combinations, but your own wall, hood and finish determine the final cut list.
