Turn two wooden A-frame ladders, one long flat ladder, and a garden bench into a decorative arbor-style seating nook. In the featured arrangement, the A-frame ladders stand at each side of the bench, the flat ladder spans their tops, and screws connect the three pieces to the bench. A separate cable-reel top on four metal pin legs supplies the companion table. The build is intentionally simple and reversible, but it is not presented as an engineered or rated structure: the tutorial gives no load rating, wind rating, anchoring method, or structural test.
The original project by Donna of Funky Junk Interiors uses one coat of Olympic Waterguard on the wood and minimal screws so the arbor can be taken apart before winter. Follow the sequence below, then adapt the footprint and weather protection to your own yard, materials, and local safety requirements.

What this ladder arbor is—and what it is not
This project is a decorative frame for a bench, not a roofed pergola or a certified support structure. Its visual effect comes from reusing ladder geometry: two wooden A-frames create the side uprights and a long, flat wooden ladder creates an open “roof” line. The bench sits between the side ladders and acts as the support point in the featured arrangement.
Because the source does not publish dimensions, fastener specifications, anchoring details, wind ratings, or load tests, treat the finished arbor as a light garden feature. Do not use it to support a person, swing, hammock, heavy roof, or climbing load. Before fastening, inspect every ladder and the bench for rot, cracked rails, loose rungs, protruding nails, and weakened joints. Replace unsound wood rather than trying to compensate with extra screws.

Materials and tools
Gather the following before you begin:
- Two wooden A-frame ladders for the sides.
- One long, flat wooden ladder for the top span.
- One large wooden garden bench.
- A cordless drill and screws suitable for the thickness and condition of your wood.
- One cable-spool (cable-reel) top for the companion table.
- Four table-height metal pin legs. The project author also considered coffee-table-height legs.
- Olympic Waterguard for the wood finish.
- A large paint brush.
- Optional scrap boards for a plant shelf in an opening of the top ladder.
- Optional plants, hanging baskets, a pillow, and a blanket for styling.
The core idea assumes you already have, or can safely source, the ladders, bench, and reel top. Buying new decorative pieces can erase the environmental and budget advantage of the upcycle.
Plan the footprint before drilling
Choose a level seating location
Set the bench where you want the finished nook, allowing room to walk around it and to place the cable-reel table. A level, firm surface makes it easier to keep both side ladders standing evenly. The tutorial does not specify a foundation or ground anchor, so decide how the assembly will resist movement in your particular site. If your location is exposed to strong wind, a slope, soft soil, or frequent use by children, consult a qualified local professional about an appropriate anchoring approach rather than assuming the screws alone provide that protection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck clearances with a dry fit
Place one A-frame ladder on each side of the bench. Leave the previously white-painted sides in place if you like that look; the original project did. Confirm that the bench is centered enough for the seat to remain usable and that the ladder feet sit flat. Then lay the long, flat ladder across the tops of the two A-frames. Step back and check that the span is supported at both ends, the rungs are oriented as intended, and no part of the top ladder creates an unsafe sharp edge at head height.
Dry-fitting is the point to adjust spacing. Once screws are installed, moving a ladder can enlarge holes or split old timber.

Build the arbor frame
- Position the side ladders. Stand the two wooden A-frame ladders on opposite sides of the bench. Keep their feet fully supported and align them so the bench touches each ladder at a solid section of wood.
- Fasten each A-frame to the bench. Where a side ladder meets the bench, drill pilot holes if the timber is dry or prone to splitting, then drive screws through the ladder into the bench. Use enough fasteners to hold the joint securely without filling the wood with unnecessary holes. The source describes using minimal screws so the arbor can later be dismounted.
- Set the top ladder. Lay the long flat ladder across the tops of the A-frames. Recheck that both ends have comparable contact and that the ladder is not rocking.
- Join the top to the sides. Screw the flat ladder to each A-frame where the pieces meet. Drive the screws squarely and stop when the heads are seated; over-tightening can crush weathered wood.
- Test the assembled frame cautiously. From the ground, look for rocking, twisting, lifted feet, or visibly splitting joints. Do not climb the arbor or hang weight from it. If it moves, stop and correct the fit or seek site-specific advice before adding décor.
In the original arrangement, the bench is the support between the A-frames. The author also notes that, if no bench is available, the A-frame ladders can instead be opened and repositioned to self-support. That is a described alternative configuration, not a tested stability guarantee; evaluate it separately and do not assume it has the same behavior as the bench-supported layout.
Add a plant shelf (optional)
The opening between rungs in the top ladder can become a small shelf. Cut or select scrap boards that span the opening, place them so they sit fully on the ladder members, and check that they cannot slide out through the gap. Keep the load light: the tutorial suggests plants and hanging baskets but provides no shelf capacity or attachment rating. Use containers that remain stable in wind and avoid placing heavy pots over the seating area.
Make the cable-reel table
Choose the table height
The featured companion table uses four table-height metal pin legs under a cable-reel top. The author says coffee-table-height legs would also have been an option. Pick one height based on how you will use the table: table height suits meals or laptop work, while coffee-table height keeps the surface lower beside the bench. The tutorial does not give leg lengths or a finished tabletop height, so measure your own reel and bench before ordering or cutting anything.
Attach the four legs
- Turn the cable-reel top upside down on a protected surface.
- Mark four leg positions around the underside, spacing them evenly and keeping each foot clear of the reel’s edge.
- Check that the pin-leg mounting plates sit flat on sound wood.
- Drive the supplied or otherwise appropriate screws through the plates into the reel top. Avoid screws long enough to pierce the tabletop.
- Turn the table upright and check for rocking. Adjust a leg position or correct an uneven foot before loading the surface.
Keep the table’s intended use light. Neither a load limit nor a structural test is reported for the cable-reel conversion.

Protect the wood with the named finish
After the frame was assembled, the project author applied one coat of Olympic Waterguard in Natural to all the wood. She describes the product as water-based, easy to clean up, and not adding a yellow tone. Those are her observations; the tutorial does not provide comparative testing or a measured outdoor service life.
- Brush off dust, loose fibers, and dirt. Let damp wood dry before coating.
- Stir the finish according to its label and work in a suitable outdoor or well-ventilated area.
- Use the large paint brush to coat exposed ladder rails, rungs, the bench, the top ladder, shelf boards, and the cable-reel top.
- Follow the product label for drying and recoat instructions. Do not place cushions, plants, or tabletop items on tacky finish.
- Inspect end grain and joints after drying. Touch up missed areas according to the label rather than assuming one coat seals every surface.
Finish is not a substitute for sound wood, drainage, or anchoring. Seasonal inspection remains necessary even when a coating looks intact.

Seasonal setup and takedown
Donna explains her fastening choice this way: “I only used minimal screws so I could dismount the arbor before the winter weather set in for extra longevity.” — Funky Junk Donna, author of Funky Junk Interiors, September 9, 2026. This is a design decision she made for her project, not a guarantee that disassembly will extend the life of every arbor or finish.
To take the arbor down, remove décor first, support the top ladder while backing out the screws that join it to the A-frames, then remove the screws connecting the side ladders to the bench. Store the ladders, bench, and shelf boards under cover where they can dry and remain ventilated. Keep the hardware together and label which screws belong to each joint. In spring, repeat the dry-fit inspection before reassembly; replace any timber that has developed rot, splits, or loose joints.

Decorate without overloading the frame
Plants and hanging baskets
Use the top ladder’s rungs and the optional shelf for lightweight plants. Hang baskets only from members that are sound and positioned so a falling container cannot strike someone on the bench. Watering adds weight, and wet soil is substantially heavier than an empty pot, so choose modest containers and check the joints after installation.
Comfort items
A pillow and blanket can make the bench inviting. Bring textiles indoors during rain or before winter storage so they do not trap moisture against the wood. Keep blankets away from candles, heaters, and any other ignition source.
Keep access clear
Do not let vines, cords, or table placement narrow the path around the bench. Trim growth that conceals a loose fastener or creates a snag point. A decorative arbor is easier to inspect when the joints remain visible.
Practical checks before using the nook
- Both A-frame ladders sit flat and contact the bench at solid wood.
- The top ladder bears on both side ladders without rocking.
- Screw heads are seated, with no sharp points protruding into the seating or walking area.
- No rail, rung, bench board, or reel top shows rot, a major split, or a loose connection.
- The table stands level and does not wobble when lightly pressed.
- Plants and accessories are light enough that the frame remains steady.
- The site-specific decision about anchoring or wind exposure has been addressed; the tutorial supplies no universal method.
Time expectations and what the tutorial leaves open
The printable project block from Funky Junk Interiors lists “Prep Time 2 hrs,” “Project Time 1 hr,” and “Total Time 1 d” (2026). These are publisher-provided estimates, not independent measurements, and the page does not explain why the component times add up to a one-day total. Your actual schedule will vary with ladder condition, cleaning, finish drying, hardware selection, and whether you build the optional shelf and table.

The source documents one arbor arrangement rather than a set of tested models. It does not compare dimensions, fastener types, wood species, table loads, wind performance, anchoring systems, or durability across finishes. Those omissions matter if you need a permanent, high-load, or public-use structure; in that case, use a design intended and evaluated for that purpose instead of treating this upcycle as an engineered substitute.
Decide whether this project fits your yard
This ladder garden arbor makes sense when you want a visually distinctive bench nook from materials already on hand, can inspect and reposition the pieces safely, and are comfortable taking the frame apart seasonally. The strongest feature is its reversibility: the top ladder, side ladders, bench, and cable-reel table remain recognizable, reusable objects rather than permanently altered construction.
Choose the bench-supported arrangement when the bench can provide firm contact at both sides. Consider the self-supporting A-frame alternative only after a separate stability check. Select table-height or coffee-table-height legs according to the activities planned at the bench, and keep all loads modest because no capacities are published. Finish the wood, monitor the joints, and remove the assembly before severe winter conditions if that is appropriate for your site.
