The most reliable way to build a patio table with a built-in drinks cooler is to choose the removable bucket or planter insert first, then design the table around its actual rim and body dimensions. That sequence determines the opening, support ledge, drainage route and cover. Build one published plan as a complete system—metric Merbau dining table, pine coffee table, cedar patio table or another documented design—rather than combining cut lists from different projects.
What a removable-cooler patio table actually needs
This project is a framed outdoor table with a hole in the top. A bucket or planter box drops into that opening and is supported by a rim, rebate or internal ledge. You lift the insert out to empty meltwater, clean it or store it, and close the table with a lid or the saved tabletop piece when you want a normal surface.

The insert is not automatically a food-contact-certified container, and the plans do not establish a tested ice-retention time or load rating. Treat the cooler as a place for packaged drinks and ice, and keep the table’s structural capacity within the limits of the chosen plan and your construction.
Choose the table scale and plan before buying timber
Published designs are not interchangeable. They use different dimensions, materials, joinery and drainage details. The following comparison shows what each documented approach is intended to do.

| Plan | Scale and insert arrangement | Materials and construction | Cover and drainage details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bunnings Australia Merbau table | Dining-table scale; one removable bucket cooler. | Metric cut list, Merbau timber and project-specific stainless-steel and other fasteners. | Drainage holes in the frame rebate; the removed tabletop section becomes the cover. |
| Kreg / Shanty2Chic | Outdoor coffee table; planter-box insert and removable center plank. | Pine boards, glue, pocket-hole screws and an outdoor sealer or finish. | Center plank closes the opening; drainage arrangement follows the planter and frame you build. |
| Kreg / Shades of Blue Interiors | Outdoor coffee table around a 36-by-8-inch insert top and a 6-inch insert height. | Exterior fasteners and standard woodworking tools. | Removable insert with a lid designed to sit flush. |
| Home Depot picnic table | Picnic-table format; planter size must be measured before cutting. | Construction follows the picnic-table instructions and your selected outdoor lumber. | Drain holes in the planter bottom are recommended to prevent standing water. |
| Real Cedar | Patio table and bench arrangement with a built-in cooler. | Western Red Cedar, described in the plan as naturally resistant to rot, decay and insects. | Follow the PDF’s cooler support and drainage details as a complete design. |
| Remodelaholic / HerToolbelt | Dining table measuring 76 1/8 by 41 1/2 by 30 inches, with two 10-by-20-inch plastic planter inserts. | Use the 26-page plan’s own cut list and joinery. | Two openings require two independent support and drainage paths; do not substitute a single insert without redesigning the frame. |
| Ana White | Patio table with built-in beer or wine coolers; dimensions and diagrams are plan-specific. | Shopping list, cut list and construction steps are supplied with the plan. | Use the plan’s cooler and cover arrangement. Its stated $150–$200 cost is an old estimate, not a current materials quote. |
The 36-by-8-inch insert example, the 6-inch height, the Remodelaholic table dimensions and the two 10-by-20-inch planters are examples from those plans, not universal standards. If your container differs by even a small amount at the rim, redraw the opening and ledge instead of forcing it into a published cutout.
Measure the insert before you draw the tabletop
Record the rim, body and depth
Measure the outside dimension at the top rim, the widest body dimension below the rim and the overall height. A container needs a bearing surface: its rim can rest on a rebate, or its body can hang from an internal ledge. The opening must be smaller than the bearing feature but large enough for the body to pass through. Write these dimensions on a full-size cardboard template so you can test the fit without risking a tabletop board.

Decide whether the insert drains
A solid bucket can hold meltwater, but rainwater still has to leave the table area. A planter with holes in its bottom can drain, as the Home Depot instructions advise, but only if the water has a clear route out rather than into a sealed box below. Do not drill holes simply because another plan does; identify where water will go in your exact frame and insert arrangement.
Reserve a cover
Keep the cutout or make a separate lid before you assemble the table. Bunnings reuses the removed tabletop section as a cover. The Kreg coffee-table design describes a lid that sits flush over the insert. A cover keeps the surface useful when the cooler is removed and prevents an open cavity from collecting leaves and rain.

Lay out the opening without weakening the frame
Turn the tabletop or partially assembled frame over and mark every apron, stretcher, cleat and brace. The opening must not intersect a structural support. Bunnings specifically instructs builders to position the bucket away from underside supports before marking it. If the first location collides with a brace, move the opening; do not notch a load-bearing member casually.
Centering the cooler visually is less important than preserving uninterrupted support around the perimeter. For a two-insert dining table, leave enough material between openings for a continuous rail or properly supported divider. A full-size template makes this spacing visible before any irreversible cut.

- Outdoor-rated lumber specified by the selected plan: Merbau, pine, Western Red Cedar or the plan’s stated species.
- The measured removable bucket or planter insert, plus material for a ledge or rebate if the plan requires one.
- Exterior-rated or stainless-steel fasteners, outdoor adhesive where specified, and an exterior sealer or finish.
- Tape measure, square, pencil, clamps, drill and bits, and a jigsaw or other saw suited to the tabletop material.
- A pocket-hole jig if you are following the Kreg / Shanty2Chic approach.
- Scrap timber for temporary support under boards while cutting, as used in the Bunnings instructions.
- Sandpaper and the paint, stain or clear exterior finish selected for your climate and the lumber species.
Keep the units consistent. The Bunnings cut list is metric; the Kreg and Remodelaholic examples use inches. Convert every dimension once on your working drawing, or stay entirely in the plan’s original units. Mixing a metric cut list with an imperial insert measurement is an easy way to create a loose or undersized opening.
Build sequence: frame first, opening second
1. Freeze one plan and make a cut sheet
Print or copy the selected plan’s dimensions, then add your insert’s measured rim, body and height. Mark which boards form the tabletop, which support the opening and which form the legs or apron. Do not borrow a leg length from one plan, an insert opening from another and a drainage detail from a third unless you have recalculated the entire structure.

2. Dry-fit the container and supports
Set the insert on the unfinished frame or on temporary blocks at the intended height. Confirm that the rim or ledge carries its weight evenly and that the body does not touch a brace. Check the cover independently: it should sit on the surrounding tabletop without dropping into the hole.
3. Assemble the tabletop and frame
Build the aprons, legs and tabletop according to the chosen plan. Keep joints square and use the specified exterior fasteners. In a pocket-hole design, apply glue and drive the pocket-hole screws as directed; in a plan using stainless-steel fasteners, follow its stated spacing and predrilling guidance. Clamp adjacent boards so the top remains aligned while the frame cures or tightens.
4. Mark the opening from the real insert
Place the container upside down or use the cardboard template to trace its outside shape. Mark a second line inside that outline where the rim or ledge will support it. The inner line is the cut line only if it leaves the required bearing surface; confirm this against your measured body and rim before cutting.
5. Secure the boards and cut carefully
Fasten or clamp the tabletop boards near the cutout so they cannot shift. Bunnings uses an offcut below the cut area to hold boards together while the opening is cut. Drill a starter hole inside the waste area, insert the jigsaw blade and follow the line slowly. Support the waste piece so it does not tear the last fibers, then save it if it will become the cover.

6. Install the ledge and test the fit
Attach the cleats, rebate or internal rails that carry the insert. Lower the empty container into place, check for rocking and verify that you can lift it out without scraping the frame. If the opening is tight, enlarge it gradually and keep the support surface intact; do not remove so much material that the rim loses its bearing.
7. Create a deliberate drainage path
For a Bunnings-style frame, drainage holes are placed in the frame rebate so water collected around the insert can escape. For the Home Depot planter approach, holes in the planter bottom prevent standing water in the planter itself. In either case, confirm that water exits below or outside the table rather than soaking a trapped cavity or a vulnerable end grain. Test with a small amount of water before finishing, and keep the path clear of glue and finish.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors8. Sand, paint or seal before final installation
Ease sharp edges, sand the tabletop and smooth the cutout and cover edges. Pay particular attention to end grain exposed by the opening; it absorbs water more readily than a factory face and must receive the same exterior protection as the rest of the table.
Choose a coating compatible with the lumber and outdoor exposure. A paint system hides mixed grain and lets you coordinate the table with the patio, while an exterior stain or clear sealer preserves more of the wood’s appearance. Apply only to clean, dry surfaces and follow the coating maker’s recoat and curing directions. Coat the underside of the tabletop, the inside of the opening, the ledge and the cover—not just the visible top. Keep the insert out during finishing so paint or sealer cannot contaminate its interior.

9. Fit the cover and finish assembly
After the finish has cured, install the insert and place the cover. A flush lid should not bind against fresh coating. Label or store the cover with the table so it is available whenever the cooler is removed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Drainage, rain and seasonal use
Melting ice is only one source of water. Rain can enter while the insert is installed, and condensation can wet the surrounding ledge. Inspect the drainage route after the first storm and after each deep cleaning. Empty the insert, wipe the ledge dry and clear leaves from holes before they block the exit.

Common mistakes and fixes
- The insert falls through: the opening was sized to the rim instead of the body, or the ledge is too narrow. Add a properly supported internal ledge or remake the opening before loading it.
- The container will not drop in: paint buildup, an undersized cut or an unmeasured taper is binding it. Mark the interference points, remove the insert and enlarge the opening in small increments.
- The cover sits low or rocks: the saved cutout was not kept oriented to its original boards, or the support ledge is uneven. Plane or shim the support and test the cover before applying the final coat.
- Water remains under the insert: holes terminate in a sealed cavity or the rebate is flat. Rework the path so water reaches the exterior, then retest with water.
- The tabletop shifts during cutting: boards were not clamped or backed. Reassemble or realign them, add temporary support beneath the cut, and recut only after the layout is stable.
- Finish peels around the opening: the edge was damp, dusty or left unsealed. Remove loose coating, allow the wood to dry and refinish all exposed end grain according to the product directions.
- Two inserts interfere with the structure: the divider was treated as leftover space. Recalculate the center rail and support each insert independently, following the two-insert dining-table plan rather than adapting one opening by guesswork.
How to decide among the documented approaches
Choose a coffee table for a compact seating area
The Kreg / Shanty2Chic and Kreg / Shades of Blue Interiors projects suit a lower outdoor coffee-table role. The former uses a planter-box insert and removable center plank; the latter documents a 36-by-8-inch top insert, 6-inch insert height and flush lid. Their pine, pocket-hole or exterior-fastener methods are appropriate only when followed with the stated dimensions and outdoor finish.
Choose a dining or picnic table for larger gatherings
The Bunnings Merbau table, Home Depot picnic table, Real Cedar table-and-bench plan and Remodelaholic dining table are larger formats. The Remodelaholic example is 76 1/8 by 41 1/2 by 30 inches with two 10-by-20-inch plastic planters, while the Bunnings design uses one bucket and metric cuts. These layouts require more careful underside planning because the cooler openings compete with long aprons, braces and seating clearance.
Choose cedar when low-maintenance wood is the priority
The Real Cedar plan describes Western Red Cedar as naturally resistant to rot, decay and insects. That characteristic does not eliminate the need to protect cut edges, keep drainage open or follow the plan’s assembly details, but it can influence your lumber choice when the table will remain outdoors.

Use and maintenance checklist
- Keep the insert removable so you can empty meltwater and inspect the ledge.
- Use the cover whenever drinks are not being chilled.
- Clear drainage holes after storms and before winter storage.
- Inspect fasteners, joints and the underside at the start of each outdoor season.
- Touch up worn paint or sealer on the tabletop, cutout, ledge and cover according to the coating manufacturer’s schedule.
- Do not claim a load limit, ice-retention period or food-contact approval that your chosen plan and container do not document.
A successful patio table cooler is a coordinated system: measured insert, unobstructed support, stable frame, intentional drainage and a cover that fits. Selecting those details before the first cut produces a table that can switch between entertaining and everyday patio use without sacrificing the structure or the finish.
