A removable cedar slat mat can make a hard-to-like shower floor more comfortable while still letting you lift the wood out to clean, reach the drain, and dry the shower. Build it as a set of manageable sections, measure around the drain before cutting, leave clear drainage and airflow paths, and treat the finish and fasteners as maintenance items—not guarantees of waterproofing or slip safety.

What a removable cedar shower mat solves—and what it does not
The useful feature is removability. A mat that can be lifted gives you access to the drain, lets you wash the shower floor underneath, and allows the cedar to dry outside the wet area. That is a different goal from permanently covering the floor. A fixed platform can hide trapped moisture and make cleaning awkward; a lift-out design makes those tasks part of the normal routine.
Cedar is commonly used for bath mats and duckboards because it can be milled into slats with open spaces between them. However, the available project directions are for a bath mat rather than a shower-specific, engineered product. No independent slip-resistance test or safety certification was established for a homemade version. Do not describe the finished mat as slip-proof.

- The mat must fit the measured shower, including the drain, curb, door swing and any sloped edges.
- Slats should leave routes for water to reach the drain and for air to move below the wood.
- Every exposed edge needs careful sanding and continuing inspection; sanding is not a permanent guarantee against splinters.
- A sealant can be part of the build, but the product label—not this project—determines whether its use is suitable for repeated shower exposure.
- Wet-area fasteners can corrode. One woodworker reported rust from screws that stained a plastic shower floor, so fastener selection and inspection deserve attention.
Measure the shower before designing the slats
Record the usable footprint
Clean and dry the shower floor, then measure its length and width at several points. Tiled walls, rounded corners and sloped thresholds can make the floor less rectangular than it appears. Use the smallest usable dimension when deciding the outside size, and leave enough clearance to lift the mat without scraping the walls or door.
Locate the drain and slopes
Mark the drain center, its cover and any channel or linear drain. Note the direction in which the floor falls toward the outlet. A slat mat should not bridge the drain so tightly that hair or debris cannot be removed. Plan an opening, a removable end section, or a seam that can be lifted directly over the drain.
Choose sections you can actually lift
Do not make one oversized panel simply because the shower is wide. Divide the surface into two or more sections if a single piece would be heavy, flexible, or difficult to stand upright for drying. Each section should have a clear top and bottom, no sharp projecting fasteners, and enough room around its edges for fingers or a lifting strap.
A useful test is to make a full-size cardboard layout. Place it in the shower, mark the drain and door clearance, and practice lifting it out. Adjust the seams before cutting cedar.

Materials and tools
A March 3, 2022 Brit + Co cedar bath-mat tutorial documents this materials path: nine cedar panels measuring 1.5 × 24 inches, three panels measuring 1.5 × 16 inches, wood glue, 27 wood screws, a drill, water-based sealant, sandpaper and a tape measure. Those quantities and lengths are an example for that tutorial, not universal shower dimensions. For a custom shower, buy enough cedar to cover your measured layout and enough support pieces to keep each module rigid.
- Cedar boards or panels sized for your cut plan.
- Support strips that run across the underside of the slats.
- Wood glue labeled for the materials and exposure you intend to use.
- Screws whose packaging identifies them as suitable for repeatedly wet locations; the available evidence does not establish one fastener metal or coating as best.
- A drill and a bit for pilot holes, plus a driver bit matching the screw head.
- Sandpaper in more than one grit so you can remove mill marks and then smooth the exposed surfaces.
- A tape measure, straightedge and pencil for the layout.
- A saw appropriate for cedar if the purchased panels need trimming.
- Water-based sealant only if its label allows the intended use, with the label’s application and curing equipment.
Build the mat in a controlled sequence
1. Cut and label every piece
Transfer the cardboard layout to the cedar. Label each slat and each underside support so the orientation cannot be confused during assembly. Keep the drain opening and section seams visible in the plan. Dry-fit all pieces on a flat surface before applying adhesive.
2. Sand before assembly
Sand the top faces, long edges and cut ends while the pieces are easy to handle. Round over sharp corners slightly rather than leaving a knife edge. Remove dust before gluing. After assembly, run a clean hand over every reachable surface and stop if you feel a raised fiber; the finished mat still needs periodic inspection.

Arrange the slats parallel to one another with consistent open spaces. The Brit + Co directions call for spacing of about half an inch on their bath mat. Treat that as a tutorial example, not a validated shower specification. Your spacing must balance drainage, foot comfort, structural support and the drain position. Use temporary spacer blocks so the gaps remain even while you mark the supports.

4. Position the underside supports
Place supports across the slats, perpendicular to their length, near the ends and at additional points where the section flexes. Keep supports away from the drain opening and leave a continuous route for air beneath the slats. If a support would sit over a floor high spot or prevent a section from lifting, move the support and redraw the plan rather than forcing the wood flat.
5. Glue, pilot-drill and screw
The documented tutorial applies glue where the slats meet the supports, drills pilot holes and then fastens the assembly. Follow the same order: apply a controlled amount of adhesive, clamp or weight the pieces so the gaps do not move, drill pilot holes through the support into the slats, and drive the screws flush without crushing the cedar. The tutorial uses 27 screws for its particular panel count; calculate your own fastener count from the number of support intersections instead of copying that number automatically.
Wipe away squeeze-out before it hardens, especially on the top face. Do not leave screw heads proud where bare feet can contact them. At the same time, avoid driving so deeply that water can collect in a large hole.

6. Let the assembly stabilize
Keep each section flat and supported while the adhesive cures according to its label. Do not place it in the shower merely because the glue feels firm to the touch. Once cured, test-fit the dry mat in the shower and confirm that every section lifts without binding.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
7. Apply any finish according to its label
The bath-mat tutorial lists a water-based sealant, but it does not establish which finish is durable for repeated shower exposure. If you use one, follow the manufacturer’s surface preparation, number of coats, ventilation and cure-time instructions. Coat all reachable faces and pay special attention to end grain, then allow the stated cure time before introducing water. A finish should be treated as a maintenance choice, not proof that the cedar has become waterproof.
Design drainage and airflow instead of blocking them
Open gaps are a defining feature of a duckboard. A commercial cedar duckboard listing describes 0.4 cm gaps and custom sizing, while also making retailer claims about quick drying, reduced bacteria and slip resistance. Those claims are not independent findings, and the 0.4 cm dimension is a commercial product specification—not a proven rule for every homemade shower.
For a DIY build, evaluate the actual water path:
- Look through the gaps and confirm that water can reach the shower floor rather than pooling against a solid frame.
- Keep underside supports narrow enough and positioned so they do not form dams across the floor slope.
- Leave clearance around the drain cover for hair removal and routine cleaning.
- Check that the mat does not rock on grout ridges, a raised drain flange or a sloped transition.
- Lift a section after a shower and inspect whether the underside and floor are drying; trapped dampness is a design warning.
Make removal and drying part of daily use
One woodworker who built a removable cedar overlay described rinsing it after use and leaning it against a wall to dry. That is a single person’s experience, not a universal care schedule, but it illustrates the purpose of the design. Build in a place where you can safely stand each section on edge without blocking the doorway or creating a trip hazard.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- After the shower, rinse soap and hair from the top and underside if the section can be handled safely.
- Lift the sections rather than dragging them across tile or the shower pan.
- Inspect the drain and clean it while the mat is out.
- Lean the cedar where air can reach both faces and where it cannot fall onto a person.
- Return the sections only after the floor and the wood are acceptably dry.
If you cannot remove the mat without disassembling it, it is not serving the main maintenance goal. Rework the section size, edge clearance or lifting method.

Inspect the wood, finish and fasteners
At regular cleaning intervals, check for raised grain, cracks, loose screws, darkened areas and changes in fit. Sand a rough spot only after removing the section and letting it dry. If a screw loosens, take the section out of service until the hole and surrounding wood are sound.
Pay particular attention to discoloration around fasteners. The reported rust-staining incident shows why a screw that looks fine when installed can still damage a shower surface later. The available evidence does not compare stainless, coated or other fastener types, so verify wet-location suitability from the fastener maker and replace any corroding hardware promptly.
Do not use bleach, abrasive powders or an unapproved solvent merely to make cedar look new. Clean according to the wood-care and finish labels you selected. If an odor persists after thorough drying, remove the mat and investigate trapped moisture underneath before putting it back.
Troubleshoot common build and use problems
| Symptom | Likely design or maintenance issue | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Water remains beneath the mat | Gaps or underside supports interrupt the floor slope, or the mat is left in place while wet | Lift the section, clear the drain path, inspect for a support acting as a dam, and dry both surfaces before reuse |
| Section rocks or rocks on one corner | Uneven shower floor, warped slat or support placed over a high spot | Remove it, identify the contact point, and correct the wood or support layout rather than adding a loose shim in the shower |
| Rough edge or splinter | Insufficient sanding, raised grain or wear during use | Dry the piece, sand the affected area smooth, remove dust and inspect adjacent edges before reinstalling |
| Rust-colored mark around a screw | Fastener corrosion in a repeatedly wet environment | Remove the section, replace the affected hardware with a product verified for the exposure, and clean the underlying surface using its care instructions |
| Drain is hard to reach | Opening or seam was not aligned with the drain cover | Redesign the section boundary or trim the mat only after making a new dry template; do not leave a permanent obstruction over the drain |
| Musty smell returns quickly | Wood or floor is not drying between uses, or debris is trapped beneath supports | Increase drying time and cleaning access; if the smell persists, stop using the mat until the source is found |
DIY mat versus a commercial cedar duckboard
The right choice depends on fit and maintenance rather than on a blanket claim that one is safer. The available material contains no comparative testing, so use the following questions when evaluating an alternative.
| Decision point | DIY removable mat | Commercial cedar duckboard |
|---|---|---|
| Fit around your drain and walls | You measure and cut the exact footprint, then can divide it into liftable sections | The retailer description includes custom sizing, but the available evidence does not establish how every drain layout is handled |
| Gap specification | You choose spacing for drainage and comfort; no universal DIY gap is established | One listing specifies 0.4 cm gaps as a product feature |
| Removal and drying | You control section size and can design for rinsing and standing the pieces upright | Check the product’s actual weight, underside design and lifting method before purchase |
| Slip information | No independent slip test or certification was found for the homemade design | Retailer slip-resistance language is a seller claim, not independent verification in the available material |
| Fastener and finish control | You select the screws, adhesive and finish and must maintain them | Review the maker’s materials, wet-area instructions and replacement policy |
Requirements checklist before the first shower
- Every section fits without touching the walls, door or drain cover.
- The mat can be lifted without tools and carried safely when wet.
- Gaps remain open after assembly, with no glue bridges or debris blocking them.
- Underside supports do not stop water from following the shower slope.
- All top edges, ends and screw heads are smooth to the touch.
- Adhesive and finish have cured for the times specified on their labels.
- Fastener packaging confirms suitability for the wet exposure, and no screw shows rust or staining.
- You have a safe place to stand the sections for drying.
Current cedar, screw and sealant prices are not established by the available project sources, so a reliable budget cannot be quoted from them. Price the measured amount of cedar and the exact hardware and finish you select rather than relying on the nine-panel, 27-screw example.
Bottom line for a safe, maintainable build
Build the mat around your shower’s measurements, not a stock bath-mat size. Use slats and open spaces, split the assembly into pieces you can lift, keep the drain accessible, sand every exposed surface, and dry the wood outside the shower after use. Treat sealant claims, retailer performance language and personal reports as limited evidence, inspect for corrosion and wear, and never present an untested homemade cedar mat as slip-proof.
