Turn a structurally sound armoire into a child-friendly Narnia reading nook by repairing and painting the cabinet, converting drawers into shelves, adding a cushioned seat and suitable light, and anchoring the finished furniture to the wall. The wardrobe in front of you—not a universal plan—determines whether the interior has enough room, visibility and air movement for its intended reader.

What a Narnia wardrobe nook should include
The recognizable idea is simple: a child opens an old wardrobe and finds a small reading retreat. A practical version combines four elements:

- A usable interior: a seat, book storage and enough clearance for the actual child who will use it.
- Story cues: snowy-forest colors, a lamppost-style light, carved details and books create the Narnia association without requiring a literal replica.
- Tip-over protection: the completed furniture must be secured to the wall with an anchor system suited to its construction and your wall.
Do not promise a standard interior size. The documented project used a thrifted armoire, but it does not establish minimum dimensions for every wardrobe or every child. Measure the furniture with its doors open, measure the intended reader seated, and preserve a clear, easy route in and out. A nook that forces a child to crawl through a narrow opening, blocks sight lines or has no reasonable air movement is the wrong piece, even if its exterior looks perfect.

Choose and assess the wardrobe before painting
Check structure, odor and damage
Open and close every door and drawer. Look for loose joints, water damage, insect holes, swollen particleboard, cracked feet and a back panel that is doing structural work. Reject a cabinet that rocks, twists or has a strong persistent chemical or mildew odor. Confirm that the top and side panels can accept an anchor without splitting, and identify studs or suitable masonry fixing points on the wall where it will stand.
Plan the interior around the reader
Use cardboard or painter’s tape to mark the proposed bench, shelves and light location. Check that a seated child can reach books without climbing on furniture. Leave the doors able to open fully and avoid creating a hidden compartment that cannot be seen from the room. Keep heavier books and objects low; avoid putting tempting items on top.
Decide what to remove
The documented build removed four of six drawers and retained two, turning the open spaces into bookshelves while painting the remaining drawers. That is an example, not a rule. Remove only components that are not needed for rigidity, and test the empty cabinet for movement after each alteration. If the back panel braces the wardrobe, consult its construction before taking it out; the project described removed its back panel and then wallpapered the exposed interior.

Build the reading nook step by step
1. Empty, document and clean the cabinet
Remove books, hardware and removable drawers. Photograph hinges and drawer positions before disassembly, label parts and keep screws in bags. Vacuum dust from joints and wipe surfaces with a cleaner suitable for the existing finish. Let the wood dry completely before filling or painting.

2. Repair scratches and weak spots
Press wood filler into scratches and small holes with a putty knife. Once it is dry, sand with medium paper and finish with fine paper until the repair is flush. Sand sharp edges lightly, but do not remove sound veneer merely to make every surface bare. Recheck joints and feet; cosmetic filler cannot compensate for a loose frame.
3. Paint and highlight the carved details
Apply furniture paint in thin, even coats with a natural-bristle brush. Use an artist brush around carvings and tight corners. Respect the paint manufacturer’s recoat and curing instructions. The documented project highlighted carved details and finished with wax applied using a wax brush. Treat wax as a finish step, not as a substitute for fully cured paint, and test the color and sheen on an inconspicuous area first.
4. Prepare the interior backdrop
The example wardrobe had its back panel removed and the interior wallpapered. If your panel is structural, leave it in place and wallpaper over it instead. Measure each section, cut wallpaper with a small trimming allowance, apply paste as directed for that paper, and smooth from the center outward to push out bubbles. Trim only after the sheet is positioned and keep paste off moving hardware.

5. Convert selected drawers into shelves
After removing the chosen drawers, sand and paint the remaining drawers. Inspect the newly open compartments for exposed fasteners, splinters and unstable rails. Add books only after the cabinet has been tested for racking. Put heavier books on the lowest level and keep the top surface clear of climb-attracting objects.

6. Fit the seat
Place the bench cushion on a stable base at a height that lets the intended reader sit with feet supported. The cushion should not slide into the doorway or interfere with door movement. A removable cushion makes cleaning and inspection easier. Do not use the doors, a loose drawer or a stack of books as a seat.
7. Install the reading light
The documented project used a seeded-glass lantern pendant, converted it to plug-in operation with a switched cord, removed the wooden wardrobe top and suspended the light from a ceiling swag hook. This arrangement places the light above the nook rather than inside a confined cabinet. If you adapt it, use a fixture and cord rated for the electrical system, keep the plug and switch reachable by the supervising adult, route the cord away from the child and verify that the ceiling hook is fixed to appropriate structure. Disconnect power before any wiring work; if the conversion is outside your competence, use a qualified electrician or choose a ready-made plug-in fixture.
8. Anchor the wardrobe before use
Position the finished cabinet at its final location, locate the wall’s studs or use fixings designed for the wall type, and attach the anti-tip hardware to a strong point on the wardrobe. Tighten the connection without crushing thin panels. Test for forward movement from the top, then retest after loading books and adding the cushion. Reinspect the anchor periodically and whenever the wardrobe is moved.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends securing furniture, including dressers, armoires and wardrobes, to the wall. Its 2023 figures record 234 clothing-storage-unit tip-over fatalities in the United States from January 2000 through April 2022, including 199 child fatalities. CPSC also estimated 84,100 clothing-storage-unit tip-over injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments from 2006 through 2021, an annual average of about 5,300. Those are historical figures for clothing-storage units overall, not a prediction for this particular project, but they explain why an attractive reading nook still needs engineered restraint.

CPSC adopted ASTM F2057-23 as a mandatory standard for covered clothing-storage units, effective September 1, 2023. A modified secondhand wardrobe is not automatically certified to that standard. Check the current CPSC guidance and any requirements that apply in your jurisdiction, then follow the instructions supplied with your chosen anchor and the furniture itself.
As CPSC puts it: “CPSC recommends that consumers anchor furniture, including dressers, securely to the wall.” Store heavy items low, remove tempting objects from high surfaces and never assume a child-sized occupant cannot pull on a door or shelf.

The C.S. Lewis Foundation’s 2009 reprint of material credited to Columbia Metropolitan and author Susan Fuller Slack describes a children’s library entered through a large wardrobe. It included a Narnia lamppost, thrones, book-filled cabinets and seating. Professional librarian Cathy Crow, who spearheaded that project, said: “Children and adults alike enjoy walking into ‘Narnia’ through the old wardrobe.” The account also notes that the library obtained permission from C.S. Lewis Co. Ltd. to reproduce Pauline Baynes illustrations.
For a home nook, borrow the broad visual language: a dark painted exterior, a pale snowy interior, a lantern-like light, evergreen or woodland accents and a shelf of favorite books. Do not assume that published illustrations, logos or character art may be reproduced freely. Make your own forest silhouettes, use public-domain imagery where appropriate, or obtain permission for specific artwork.

Choose the miniature route when your goal is a diorama or a manageable rainy-day project. Choose an armoire only when you can verify safe structure, comfortable use and a proper wall connection.
Common problems and fixes
- The wardrobe rocks after drawers are removed: stop the build, restore structural parts or reinforce the carcass according to its construction. Do not rely on books or the anchor to correct a twisted frame.
- Doors hit the cushion: reduce cushion depth, reposition the seat or leave the doors open during use; never force hinges or remove a door that contributes to stability without evaluating the frame.
- Wallpaper bubbles or lifts: smooth from the center while the paste is workable, allow full drying and repair loose edges before children use the space.
- The light cord becomes a snag point: reroute it outside the child’s reach, secure excess length and inspect the plug, switch and hook regularly.
- The anchor will not meet a stud: use a fixing rated for the actual wall material or move the wardrobe. A hollow-wall plug chosen without a load rating is not an adequate substitute.
- The interior feels cramped or hidden: select a larger cabinet, remove nonessential interior fittings or abandon the full-size conversion. A decorative resemblance is not worth an unsafe entrance or poor supervision.
Budget and expectations
The documented armoire cost $260 in 2017. That is the author’s project figure, not a current budget or a prediction for a comparable piece today. Your total will vary with the wardrobe, paint, wallpaper, cushion, light, electrical parts and anchor hardware. Treat secondhand prices and product availability as local and time-sensitive, and price the safety hardware separately rather than omitting it to meet a target.
Plan the work in phases: inspection and measuring, repair and sanding, painting and curing, interior treatment, shelf and seat fitting, lighting, then anchoring and loading. Delaying books and decor until the anchor and all finishes are fully ready makes it easier to find movement, sharp edges or blocked doors.

Final pre-use checklist
- The cabinet stands level and does not rack, wobble or tip when gently tested.
- Doors, hinges, shelves and drawer fronts have no pinch points, splinters or loose hardware.
- The child can enter and leave without squeezing through an obstructed opening, and an adult can see and reach the nook.
- Books are stored low, the top is free of tempting heavy objects and the cushion cannot slide into the doorway.
- The light, switch, cord and hook are suitable for the installation and out of the child’s pulling path.
- The wardrobe is anchored to the wall with hardware and fixings appropriate to its weight and wall construction.
- Paint, wax, paste and other finishes are cured, and the interior is dry and odor-free.
