You can make a tiled table by building a stable top, planning the tile layout before cutting anything, bonding tiles in small sections, and grouting only after the adhesive has set. Two practical approaches are covered here: a plywood box clad in mosaic tiles, and a steel-angle coffee-table frame with a plywood top and larger decorative tiles. Keep each method’s materials and dimensions separate, because the construction, tools and tile formats are different.
Choose the table design before buying materials
The tile is the visible finish, but the base determines how the table is assembled and what tools you need. Decide first whether you want an enclosed plywood form with many small mosaic joints or an open coffee-table frame with a broad, relatively simple tile layout.

Plywood box with mosaic tiles
The Bunnings Australia project builds a rectangular box from plywood panels and covers the outside with mosaic tiles. It suits a compact side table or occasional table with a solid, geometric appearance. The guide specifies a 1200 mm × 396 mm × 12 mm sheet of radiata plywood, but that is the project’s example specification, not a universal table size. Your panel dimensions must be calculated from the actual tiles, the desired height and the thickness of the finished surfaces.
Framed coffee table with large decorative tiles
The Better Homes & Gardens Australia design, written by Aaron Clayton and dated December 28, 2017, uses a steel-angle frame, square-section legs, a marine-plywood top, metal edging, two decorative tiles, rivets, adhesive, primer, paint and grout. Its example tiles are 596 mm square and 10 mm thick. The article says to adjust the tabletop and edging to the tiles you select and to check every component against the real unit before cutting.
How the options differ
| Decision | Plywood mosaic box | Steel-frame coffee table |
|---|---|---|
| Base construction | Plywood panels glued and screwed into a rectangular box | Mitred steel-angle frame with square-section legs and riveted joints |
| Tile format | Mosaic tiles applied to the box surfaces | Two large decorative tiles in the example, each 596 mm square and 10 mm thick |
| Typical preparation | Mark panels with the tiles, cut, sand and prime the plywood | Cut and file metal, drill and rivet the frame, prepare the plywood top, then prime and paint |
| Specialist tools | Circular saw and drill driver, plus tile and grout tools | Mitre box, hacksaw, file, drill and rivet gun, plus tile and grout tools |
| Visual result | Many small joints and a continuous mosaic-clad form | Clean metal outline with a broad tiled top and visible border |
| Evidence-based performance | Strength, cost, outdoor suitability and load capacity are not established by the guide | Strength, cost, outdoor suitability and load capacity are not established by the guide |
Choose by construction preference, available equipment, tile size and the look you want. The published instructions do not establish that either design is stronger, cheaper, more durable or more weather-resistant than the other.

Plan the tile layout before cutting the table
Measure the actual tiles
Do not design from a nominal package dimension alone. Measure the tile, its backing or mesh where relevant, the intended grout joint and the thickness of any edging. Lay representative tiles on a flat surface and record the overall run. This reveals whether a row will finish neatly at an edge or leave an awkward narrow strip.
Dry-plan the surface
Place the tiles on the unglued tabletop or against the plywood panels in the orientation you intend to use. Mark the starting line, the border and the position of any pattern. For the framed design, center the tiles and retain an even border as described in the Better Homes & Gardens sequence. For the box design, use the tiles to mark the plywood panels before cutting them.
Account for joints and edges
- Include the planned grout gap between every tile when calculating the finished width and length.
- Check how the tile thickness meets the metal edging or adjacent plywood face.
- Keep a consistent reference edge so the pattern does not drift from one side to the next.
- Mark cuts on the base only after the dry layout has been checked against the actual table components.
This planning stage prevents the most expensive errors: cutting a panel too short, discovering that an edge strip will not fit, or ending with a visibly uneven border.
Tools and materials for the plywood mosaic table
| Category | Items listed in the Bunnings Australia guide |
|---|---|
| Measuring and marking | Tape measure, carpenter’s pencil and spirit level |
| Cutting and assembly | Circular saw, drill driver, joint knife, wood glue and chipboard screws |
| Surface preparation | Paint brush, primer and the specified 1200 mm × 396 mm × 12 mm radiata plywood |
| Tile installation | Mosaic tiles, tile adhesive and a notched trowel |
| Grouting and cleaning | Grout, rubber grout trowel, tile sponge and clean water |
Buy quantities only after calculating the surface area and allowing for cuts. Follow the adhesive, primer and grout manufacturer’s coverage, mixing and curing directions if they differ from the project guide.

Build the plywood box and tile it
1. Mark every plywood panel from the dry layout
Set the mosaic tiles against the plywood and use them to mark the panel boundaries. Identify which edges will meet, which face will be visible and where the tile field will begin. Label matching pieces so you do not reverse a panel during assembly.
2. Cut and sand the pieces
Cut the radiata plywood panels with a circular saw, keeping the saw supported and the cut line visible. Sand exposed edges and remove splinters. A clean, square edge helps the panels meet and prevents a raised corner from telegraphing through the tile finish.
3. Glue, pre-drill and screw the box
Apply wood glue to the joining surfaces, clamp or hold the panels in position, and pre-drill the screw locations. Drive the chipboard screws to form the rectangular box. Check the assembly with a spirit level and by measuring opposing diagonals; correct a twist before the glue sets.
4. Prime the plywood
Brush primer over the plywood surfaces that will receive adhesive. Allow it to dry overnight, as specified in the Bunnings sequence. Do not tile over tacky or damp primer. If the selected primer label requires a different drying period, use the label’s instruction.

5. Spread adhesive one side at a time
Work on one face of the box at a time. Spread tile adhesive with the notched trowel, holding the trowel consistently so the ridges are even. Cover only an area you can tile within the adhesive’s open time. Starting at a planned reference edge, press the mosaic into place and keep the pattern aligned.
6. Tile to the edges and clean as you go
Lay the tiles to the edges in manageable sections. Check the border and joint alignment after each section rather than waiting until the entire box is covered. Wipe adhesive that squeezes into the joints or onto the tile face with a damp sponge before it hardens. Rinse the sponge frequently so you do not spread a film over finished tiles.
7. Let the adhesive set
The Bunnings guide says to leave the tiled box overnight before grouting. Treat that as the timing for that project and adhesive system; the product label controls if it specifies a longer or shorter interval. The tiles should not shift when lightly touched before you begin grouting.

8. Work grout into every joint
Apply grout in small sections with the rubber grout trowel. Work it across the joints from multiple directions so the gaps fill fully, including intersections between mosaic sheets. Hold the tool at an angle that presses grout into the joints rather than merely skimming the tile surface.

Gently wipe the tile faces with a damp sponge, taking care not to pull grout back out of the joints. Change the water as it becomes cloudy. Leave the grout to dry for 24 hours according to the Bunnings sequence, or follow the grout manufacturer’s stated cure time when it differs. Protect the table from disturbance during that period.
Build the steel-frame coffee table
1. Confirm the tile and tabletop dimensions
Use the selected tiles—not an assumed standard size—to determine the plywood top, metal edging and frame dimensions. The Better Homes & Gardens example uses two 596 mm square tiles that are 10 mm thick, but the guide explicitly calls for adapting the components to your chosen tiles. Check the parts against the actual unit before making irreversible cuts.
2. Cut and prepare the steel frame
Mark the steel-angle pieces for mitred corners. Cut them with the hacksaw using a mitre box to guide the angle, then file the cut edges smooth. Dry-fit the pieces on a flat surface and use clamps to hold the corners in alignment while you check the frame’s dimensions.
3. Drill and rivet the legs and frame
Position the square-section legs and drill the holes required for the rivets. Assemble the frame with the rivet gun, checking that the legs remain square and that the frame sits evenly. Remove burrs and sharp edges with the file before continuing.
4. Prepare the marine-plywood top and metal edging
Cut the marine-plywood tabletop to the dimensions established by the tile layout. Fit the metal edging around the perimeter and verify that the tile thickness will meet it without an unintended step. The edging must be checked against the real tiles and frame, not just against a drawing.
5. Prime and paint the frame
Prepare the metal surfaces as directed by the selected primer and paint products. Apply primer, allow the stated drying time, then paint the frame. Keep paint off bonding surfaces that need adhesive unless the adhesive instructions specifically permit that substrate.

6. Attach and center the tabletop
Place the plywood top on the completed frame and center it. Confirm the overhang or border on all sides before fixing it according to the design. Recheck level and alignment from several directions; a small frame error is easy to see once the large tiles are installed.
7. Glue the tiles with an even border
Mark the center lines and border, then apply the specified adhesive evenly. Set the tiles into position with the planned gap between them and the surrounding edging. Press uniformly rather than rocking one corner down, which can force adhesive out and alter the height.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety and handling precautions
The Bunnings guide advises appropriate protective equipment, including safety glasses, ear muffs and a mask as examples. This project combines sawing, drilling, sanding, metal cutting, adhesives and grout, so use the safety instructions supplied with each tool and product rather than treating this list as a complete safety manual.
- Wear eye protection while cutting, drilling, sanding and using a rivet gun.
- Use hearing protection around powered saws and other loud tools.
- Use respiratory protection and ventilation appropriate to the dust, primer, paint and adhesive product.
- Secure workpieces before cutting or drilling, and keep hands clear of blades and bits.
- Read mixing, application, ventilation and curing directions on every adhesive, primer, paint and grout container.
- Keep the work area clean so loose grit cannot become trapped beneath a tile or scratch the finished surface.
Adhesive, grout and curing decisions
Use one compatible system
Tile, substrate, primer, adhesive and grout must be compatible. The project guides identify tile adhesive and grout but do not establish a universal product or formulation. Select products whose labels permit use on your chosen plywood, metal-edged assembly and tile type. If a label conflicts with a project timing, coverage rate or preparation step, follow the label.
Respect open time
Spread only as much adhesive as you can cover while it remains workable. Large batches left exposed can skin over before the tile is placed, weakening contact. Small sections also make it easier to keep mosaic rows straight and to clean squeeze-out promptly.
Do not rush the transition to grout
Grout is not a substitute for cured adhesive. Moving or loading tiles too early can disturb alignment and leave voids. The plywood-box guide’s overnight adhesive wait and 24-hour grout wait are project-specific reference timings; the actual product directions take precedence.

Common problems and practical fixes
The border is uneven
Stop before adhesive is spread and redo the dry layout. Shift the starting line or distribute the difference across several joints rather than leaving one sliver at an edge. In the framed design, recenter the tiles and recheck the metal edging before cutting.
A tile sits higher than its neighbors
Lift it while the adhesive is workable, remove excess adhesive or add enough to support the tile, and reset it. Check that the substrate is flat and that the notched trowel is producing consistent ridges. Do not wait until the adhesive has cured.
Adhesive squeezes into the joints
Remove the excess immediately with a damp sponge or a tool recommended by the adhesive maker. Hardened adhesive can reduce grout depth and create a visible dark line beneath the joint.
Grout washes out of the joints
The sponge may be too wet or the grout may not have been pressed from multiple directions. Use a damp—not dripping—sponge, make fewer passes, and allow the grout to firm as the product instructions specify before final cleaning.
The plywood box is out of square
Correct the panels while the glue is still workable. Measure diagonals, clamp the longer diagonal until both measurements match, and then drive the pre-drilled screws. If the box has already cured out of square, forcing tiles to follow it can produce tapered joints; correct the base rather than hiding the error with grout.
The steel frame rocks
Set it on a known-flat surface and identify whether the issue is a leg length, a mitre or a riveted joint. File or correct the offending part only after confirming the frame dimensions. A rocking frame should be fixed before the top and tiles are attached.
Placement and performance limits
These instructions describe construction, not a tested performance rating. The cited guides do not provide a load capacity, laboratory strength result, outdoor weather-resistance rating or guaranteed service life. Do not infer that either design is suitable for outdoor exposure or for a particular heavy object without separate evidence for the exact materials and assembly.
For indoor use, protect the finished surface from impact while the adhesive and grout cure. Use coasters and lift objects rather than dragging them if you want to reduce the chance of chipping a tile or abrading a grout joint. Any sealant, edge treatment or maintenance product should be selected for the specific tile and grout and applied according to its label; neither guide establishes a universal sealing schedule.
Final inspection checklist
- The base is square, stable and free of loose dust or splinters.
- Tile dimensions, joint widths and borders were checked with the actual tiles before cutting.
- Primer, adhesive, paint and grout are compatible with their substrates and were allowed to dry for the stated times.
- Tiles are aligned, fully supported and free of hardened adhesive on their faces.
- Every joint is filled without pinholes, deep voids or grout smeared across the tile surface.
- Metal edges and cut plywood edges are smooth and do not present a sharp snag point.
- The table remains undisturbed until the final grout cure period has elapsed.
The plywood mosaic method is the simpler route when you already have woodworking tools and want a fully tiled box. The steel-frame method creates a different coffee-table look but adds metal cutting, drilling, riveting, priming and painting. In either case, accurate dry planning and patient curing matter more than trying to compensate for a poor layout after the tiles are bonded.
