How to Build a Vintage Suitcase Medicine Cabinet With Shelves and Hooks

A hard-sided vintage suitcase can become distinctive bathroom storage with fitted shelves, a mirror and a removable hook rail. This guide covers materials, construction, wall mounting and the project’s safety limits.

Turn a rigid, flat-sided vintage suitcase into a wall-mounted bathroom cabinet by adding fitted shelves, a mirror, and a removable hook rail inside the lid. The documented build takes about eight hours, including an overnight drying period, but that is the tutorial author’s estimate rather than an independently timed result. Success depends on choosing a sound case, planning storage around the items you actually own, and fastening the finished cabinet appropriately for your wall.

This project creates decorative bathroom storage. The published tutorials do not provide a load rating or show that the cabinet is child-resistant, moisture-resistant, or compliant with medication-storage standards. Treat it accordingly: keep medicines and hazardous products elsewhere unless you can provide the security and environmental control they require.

What the finished suitcase cabinet includes

The cabinet uses the suitcase body as a shallow cupboard and the lid as an organized accessory panel. A small mirror occupies the lid, while a strip of wood carrying cup hooks provides hanging space for brushes, washcloths, or lightweight toiletries. Shelves in the lower half divide the interior so bottles and small containers do not collect in one pile.

Donna Williams’s Funky Junk Interiors tutorial, published September 25, 2026, describes an eight-hour project using painted fabric, a burlap lining, wood shelves, a hook rail, and a fitted round mirror. An earlier Remodelaholic/Heathered Nest tutorial from June 11, 2015, offers useful alternatives for lining, shelf planning, pre-drilling, and wall fastening. Both describe project methods rather than tested engineering specifications.

Choose the suitcase before buying materials

Look for a rigid, flat-sided case

Select a hard-sided suitcase whose back and sides remain reasonably flat. A flexible fabric case will not hold screws or keep shelves square. Inspect hinges, corner seams, the handle area, and the shell for cracks, delamination, or water damage. A case that is attractive but structurally soft is a poor candidate for a wall cabinet.

Measure usable depth

Measure from the back shell to the closed lid, allowing for the mirror, brackets, and any interior lining. Compare that dimension with the tallest bottles and containers you intend to store. The cabinet will be useful only if the door closes without striking the contents. Also measure the inside width and height; those dimensions determine shelf length and the available span for the hook rail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the wall location

Confirm that the chosen wall can accept an anchored or stud-mounted cabinet and that opening the lid will not hit a light fixture, medicine-room door, or adjacent shelf. Leave enough clearance to reach the hooks and remove bottles without twisting the case.

Materials and tools

Item Purpose in the build Selection notes
Sound vintage suitcase Cabinet body and lid Hard-sided, flat-sided, and deep enough for intended contents
Small round mirror Mirror on the lid Choose a diameter that leaves room for brackets and the hook rail
Mirror hanging brackets Hold the mirror against the lid Use screws short enough that they cannot protrude through the lid
Wood shelf planks Interior shelves Cut to the measured opening; sand all edges
Cedar strips or wood lath Hook rail Cut to the lid width and thick enough to accept cup-hook threads
Black cup hooks Hanging points on the rail Space them for the objects you plan to hang
Hook-and-loop strips, glue, or screws Attach the hook rail to the lid Choose an attachment method compatible with the lid’s lining and expected light-duty use
Paint and antiquing glaze Finish the case and interior Use products suited to the existing surface; allow each coat to dry
Transfer gel or Mod Podge Bond and seal the burlap lining Diluted gel is used for the sealing coat
Burlap and twine Decorative bottom lining and edge detail Trim neatly to the suitcase base
Glue gun Secure the twine edge Apply carefully to avoid bulky ridges
Cordless drill and bits Pre-drill and drive fasteners Use a bit suited to the shell and shelf material
Miter saw Cut shelf boards and the hook rail A handsaw can substitute if cuts are controlled and square

Plan shelves around real contents

Before cutting wood, place the bottles, jars, or folded items you expect to keep inside the case. Group tall containers together and note the clearance needed above each group. This contents-first approach, recommended in the earlier suitcase-cabinet tutorial, prevents a row of attractive but unusable shelves.

Mark shelf heights on the side walls, then measure the distance between the marks at several points. Vintage cases are rarely perfectly square, so do not assume one width measurement applies from front to back. Record the smallest safe dimension and test-fit a cardboard template before cutting expensive boards.

Step-by-step construction

1. Clean and inspect the shell

Empty the suitcase and remove loose debris. Wipe the existing fabric and shell, then allow them to dry completely. Repair or stabilize loose trim before adding shelves. The featured tutorial paints sound existing fabric rather than stripping it, which preserves the case’s character while giving the interior a consistent base.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Paint the existing interior

Apply paint to the sound interior fabric in thin coats. Work paint into seams without flooding them, and let the surface dry between coats. Keep the lid open while drying so moisture does not remain trapped in the case.

3. Add the burlap bottom

Brush transfer gel or Mod Podge onto the bottom panel. Press burlap into the wet adhesive, smoothing from the center outward to reduce wrinkles. Once it is positioned, brush on diluted gel to seal the fabric. The tutorial leaves this layer to dry overnight; do not install shelves while the lining is still soft or tacky.

4. Finish the burlap edge

After the lining has dried, run a bead of hot glue along its perimeter and press twine into the glue. Keep the trim inside the shell’s edge so it will not interfere with the lid closing. Cut away stray fibers before moving to the shelf work.

5. Cut and sand the shelves

Transfer your measured dimensions to the shelf planks. Cut each board to fit the actual opening, then sand the faces and corners until there are no splinters. Dry-fit every shelf with the case lying flat. If a shelf binds, trim it rather than forcing the shell outward.

6. Pre-drill and fasten the shelves

The featured build secures the boards by driving screws through the outside of the suitcase into the shelf edges. Mark the screw positions, pre-drill to reduce the chance of splintering or fracturing, and use fasteners long enough to hold the shelf without emerging into the storage area. Drive screws evenly from both sides so the shelf remains level.

The outside-screw method leaves visible fastener heads, so position them consistently and plan to cover or paint them if desired. Check that every screw head sits flush enough that the cabinet will rest flat against the wall.

7. Build the lid’s hook rail

Cut a cedar strip or piece of wood lath to the lid width. Mark hook positions with enough space for fingers and the items that will hang there. Screw the black cup hooks into the strip, keeping their points centered and their threads fully engaged in the wood.

Attach the completed rail to the lid with hook-and-loop strips, glue, or screws. Hook-and-loop material makes the rail removable; glue creates a more permanent bond without additional holes; screws provide direct mechanical attachment when the lid structure can accept them. Whichever method you choose, keep the rail clear of the mirror and verify that the lid still closes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Install the mirror

Position the round mirror on the lid and mark the bracket locations. Fit the mirror hanging brackets over its edge, then drive shorter #8 screws so they hold the brackets without protruding into the cabinet. Test the lid’s interior with a fingertip before tightening fully; a screw point through the lining can damage contents and create a sharp hazard.

9. Paint and age the exterior

Paint the suitcase exterior after the hardware layout is established. Thin coats reduce runs around corners and hardware. Once the paint has dried, apply antiquing glaze selectively to seams, edges, and raised details to emphasize the vintage finish. Keep glaze away from the mirror face and wipe excess before it dries.

Two documented approaches to the interior

Decision Featured 2026 approach Earlier 2015 alternative
Base lining Paint sound fabric, bond burlap with transfer gel or Mod Podge, seal with diluted gel, and finish the edge with hot-glued twine. Use the earlier tutorial’s fabric or paper-panel treatment as an alternative decorative lining.
Shelf layout Cut and sand boards after measuring the case opening. Measure the actual intended contents first, then decide shelf count and spacing.
Shelf fastening Screw through the outside of the suitcase into the shelf edges. Use the same general through-shell concept, with pre-drilling emphasized to limit splintering or fractures.
Hook storage Screw cup hooks into a wood strip and attach the strip to the lid with hook-and-loop material, glue, or screws. Not described as a central feature of the earlier tutorial.
Mirror Use brackets and short #8 screws fitted to the lid thickness. Not described as a central feature of the earlier tutorial.

These are choices between described craft methods, not performance rankings. Pick the lining that suits the suitcase’s existing material and the finish you want, while keeping shelf measurements tied to your actual storage needs.

Mount the cabinet to the wall

Find a stud when possible

Locate the wall studs, hold the suitcase at the desired height, and mark a level line. The earlier tutorial describes leveling the case, pre-drilling, and fastening through the suitcase with screws and washers. Washers spread pressure across the shell so a screw head is less likely to pull through a thin wall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use suitable anchors when a stud is unavailable

If the mounting points do not align with studs, use wall anchors rated for your wall type and the fastener size. Drill the anchor holes according to the anchor instructions, keep the case level, and tighten the screws gradually so the shell does not distort. Donna Williams states that “Using wall anchors or screwing into a wall stud would be the most secure.”

Check the installation before loading it

Close and open the lid several times, then apply gentle hand pressure to the case in different directions. Look for movement, crushed shell material, or screws pulling through. Correct any instability before placing bottles inside. The published tutorials do not state the cabinet’s finished weight, a maximum load, fastener ratings, or an approved wall system, so do not infer a safe capacity from the appearance of the finished piece.

Safety and bathroom-use limits

  • Do not treat this decorative cabinet as verified medication storage. The tutorials do not demonstrate child-resistant latching, tamper resistance, or compliance with medication-storage standards.
  • Keep water away from unsealed wood, paper, burlap, and painted fabric. The project instructions do not establish moisture-resistance testing for a steamy bathroom.
  • Store only lightweight items until the wall attachment and shell have been observed under normal use. There is no published load test to justify a numerical limit.
  • Use eye protection when drilling and cutting, and keep fingers clear of the miter-saw blade and hot glue.
  • Check that every screw is shorter than the material it enters, particularly around the mirror, so no point emerges inside the cabinet.

Troubleshooting the common failures

The lid will not close

Check for shelf boards that extend beyond the shell, a hook rail mounted too far forward, or mirror brackets that add unexpected thickness. Remove the offending piece, trim or reposition it, and test closure before applying final adhesive or paint.

A shelf splits while being fastened

Stop tightening, back out the screw, and inspect the board edge. Move the hole away from the end, select a smaller pilot bit appropriate to the screw, and pre-drill before trying again. A split board should be replaced rather than hidden under paint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The shelf is tilted

Measure the opening again at both sides. Vintage cases can taper, and a shelf cut square may still sit unevenly. Plane or sand the high corner, then confirm level with the case held in its intended wall orientation.

The mirror bracket screw breaks through

Remove the screw immediately and replace it with a shorter one. Patch any damaged lining, then reposition the bracket if necessary so the fastener enters solid material without reaching the storage cavity.

The case shifts on the wall

Unload it and inspect the mounting points. Tighten only after confirming that anchors are appropriate for the wall or that screws have reached a stud. Add washers where the shell needs a broader bearing surface, and re-level the cabinet before reloading.

How to make the finished piece practical

Reserve the tallest shelf for pump bottles or spray containers, and use the shallowest shelf for small jars that are otherwise hard to see. Leave a little finger clearance above frequently used items. Put lightweight, nonhazardous accessories on the lid hooks so repeated opening does not place unnecessary stress on the rail.

Keep the visual treatment coherent by carrying one paint color from the outer shell onto the existing interior fabric, then letting the burlap and twine supply contrast. Antiquing glaze works best as an accent on edges rather than a heavy coat that obscures the suitcase’s original details.

Final checklist before using the cabinet

  • The suitcase shell is rigid, dry, and free of structural cracks.
  • Every shelf was measured against the actual contents and sanded smooth.
  • Shelf holes were pre-drilled, and no screw points enter the storage space.
  • The hook rail is firmly attached and does not obstruct the mirror or lid closure.
  • Mirror brackets hold the glass securely with short screws.
  • The cabinet is level and fastened to a stud or suitable wall anchors with washers where needed.
  • Only lightweight, nonhazardous bathroom items are stored until you have confirmed the installation remains stable.
