For artwork larger than about 50 × 50 cm (20 × 20 in), a shallow frame made from a thin backing board, rear bracing and face moulding is a practical alternative to a deep, heavy stretcher. You wrap the print over the board, hide the bracing behind it, then glue and nail the visible moulding into that bracing. The result is a lightweight, rigid presentation with ordinary woodworking tools.
This tutorial also explains the free owl image featured in the original project: its stated licence is personal, non-commercial use only. The source tutorial, published January 11, 2022, is The Painted Hive’s large-scale art frame and owl printable guide.

What you are building
The construction is a shallow sandwich. A 3 mm or 6 mm sheet of MDF (or another rigid panel) carries the artwork. Narrow trim is fixed around the back perimeter to stop the panel flexing and to create a solid target for the front moulding. The image wraps over the panel edges, so the print conceals the rear-bracing nail heads. A second set of nails secures the decorative moulding from the front.
This approach suits a large poster, wallpaper remnant or other flexible image that needs a solid surface. It is not the same as stretching canvas around an open frame: the backing has to carry the full image, which is why keeping the panel and timber light matters. The original demonstration measured approximately 75 × 85 cm (29 × 33 in).

Materials and tools
Core materials
- Artwork with enough extra image to wrap over every edge. The method is aimed at pieces over about 50 × 50 cm (20 × 20 in).
- A backing panel cut about 5 cm (2 in) smaller than the print in both dimensions. The author generally uses smooth, inexpensive 3 mm or 6 mm MDF.
- Rear bracing trim for all four sides; MDF is the usual choice, while the demonstration used leftover pine. Add a centre brace if the panel is large or noticeably flexible.
- Plain rectangular face moulding, approximately 12 × 30 mm in the demonstration.
- PVA wood glue.
- Finishing nails in lengths suited to each job: they must pass through the bracing without protruding through the board, while the front nails must reach the rear bracing.
- Optional water-based stain or paint, plus wood filler or putty.
Hand tools
- Saw and mitre box, or a powered mitre saw.
- Hammer, sandpaper, a nail punch or permanent marker, and a cloth or brush.
- Supports or scrap blocks to hold the board level while you nail the rear trim.
Have the cut list and nail lengths ready before spreading glue. A nail that is too long can break through the thin panel or show on the picture side; a nail that is too short will not hold the moulding to its brace.
Choose the artwork and backing together
Self-adhesive print or paper
A self-adhesive wallpaper remnant is the most forgiving substrate in this method: the source describes it as thick, durable, repositionable and easy to apply. A conventional paper print can also work, but it is less resilient and may bubble or develop waves when glue and pressure are involved. Whichever material you choose, keep a clean bleed around the image; the excess is what folds over the panel edges.

Backing options
| Backing | What the tutorial establishes | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| 3 mm or 6 mm MDF | Smooth, affordable and commonly available; a hardware store may cut it to size. | The default choice for a flat, light panel. |
| Plywood | Named as an alternative; no independent weight, price or rigidity comparison is supplied. | Use when its available sheet size or surface suits your print. |
| Masonite | Listed as another possible rigid sheet; performance figures are not stated. | Check that the chosen sheet is flat and light enough for your wall. |
| Chipboard | Listed as an alternative; no test ranking is provided. | Choose only a panel that stays stable while you wrap and nail. |
| Corflute | Listed as an option for a lightweight build. | Its fluted structure may affect how trim and nails seat, so make a small test first. |
| Rigid card stock | Listed as a lightweight alternative. | Best reserved for a panel that remains rigid at the finished size. |
The source offers these as practical options rather than tested winners. For a very large piece, favor the lightest panel that remains flat and gives the nails a reliable purchase.
Butt joints or mitres?
Either joint style works for the perimeter and face moulding. Butt joints are simply cut square and are easier to measure and assemble. Mitred corners meet at an angle and look more refined, but they are trickier to cut accurately; a mitre box or powered mitre saw helps. Whichever style you use, label each piece after dry-fitting so the grain, length and corner orientation do not get mixed up.
| Joint | Appearance | Difficulty | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Butt | Simple square meeting lines. | Lower; square cuts are forgiving. | Fast, approachable construction or a painted finish. |
| Mitre | Continuous-looking angled corners. | Higher; small measuring or cutting errors show at the corners. | A more refined timber frame when you can cut and fit accurately. |
Step-by-step: make the frame
1. Measure the print and set the panel size
Measure the usable image and mark the panel so it is roughly 5 cm (2 in) smaller than the print overall. That leaves approximately 2.5 cm (1 in) to fold over each side. If your artwork has a directional composition, mark the top edge before cutting. Confirm that the finished panel, bracing and moulding will fit the wall location and the hanging method you intend to use.

2. Cut and smooth the backing
Have the MDF or other sheet cut at the hardware store, or cut it yourself with a supported saw. Sand sharp edges and remove dust. A clean, flat surface is important: grit under a self-adhesive print can make a permanent bump, while a rough edge can tear paper as it is folded.
3. Add the rear perimeter bracing
Turn the panel face down on level supports so the thin sheet cannot sag while you work. Dry-fit the four bracing pieces around the perimeter. Apply PVA to the contact surfaces, position the trim flush with the edges, and drive the shorter finishing nails through the trim into the back of the panel. Keep the nail heads on the rear; they will be hidden by the wrapped artwork.
Do not use bracing nails long enough to emerge through the panel. If the finished size leaves a broad unsupported centre, add a centre brace in the same way. Let the glue set according to its label before moving the assembly.
4. Place the artwork and wrap the edges
With the panel face up, center the print and check the bleed on all sides. For a repositionable self-adhesive sheet, expose the adhesive gradually and smooth from the centre outward, lifting and resetting a section if it drifts. For paper, work more cautiously: paper is less tolerant of moisture and pressure, and the source warns that it can bubble or wave while gluing.
Turn the panel over and fold the excess around the braced edges like wrapping a gift. Make neat relief folds at the corners rather than cutting away the entire allowance. Keep the image face clean and press the wrapped margins firmly to the rear of the panel. The print should cover the bracing nails without extending so far that it interferes with the face moulding.

5. Cut, sand and optionally finish the face moulding
Measure each visible trim piece against the wrapped panel. Cut square for butt joints or at matching angles for mitres. Dry-fit all four pieces before applying finish. Sand the faces and ends, then apply water-based stain or paint if desired; allow it to dry fully. Leaving the timber plain is also consistent with the original project.
6. Glue and nail the moulding from the front
Hold one moulding piece in its final position, apply a thin bead of PVA to the back, and press it against the bracing. Drive finishing nails through the moulding into the rear brace, not merely into the thin backing. Work around the frame one piece at a time, checking that the picture remains square and the corners stay tight.
Select nail lengths that reach the bracing but do not pass through it. Too-short nails can loosen; overlong nails may protrude at the back or damage the wall later. Wipe away squeeze-out before it hardens.
7. Set and disguise the nail heads
Use a nail punch to set the heads slightly below the moulding surface, or mark their positions for a subtle touch-up. Fill the depressions with wood filler or putty, let them dry and sand smooth. On stained timber, a matching marker can disguise small heads; on painted moulding, spot-painting blends the repair.
8. Choose and install the hanging hardware
The projecting moulding can leave a ledge that rests on two wall nails, which is how the author often hangs the finished work. Picture string or other picture-hanging hardware are alternatives. The tutorial does not provide a load rating or a tested hardware specification, so match the fasteners to your wall and the completed frame’s actual weight. Keep the frame level by measuring the two wall points rather than relying on the moulding alone.

Free owl printable: file details and rights
The owl began as a free downloadable photograph found on Unsplash. The creator adjusted its colour and size in Photoshop and applied a custom painterly effect with Topaz Impression. The resulting file is presented for free download for personal, non-commercial use only. The source expressly prohibits republication, reproduction or redistribution, so do not upload the file elsewhere, sell copies, or include it in commercial work.
The tutorial labels the file 125 × 100 cm at 300 DPI. Its accompanying imperial label says 50 × 30 in, but those figures do not agree: 125 × 100 cm is approximately 49 × 39 in. Use the metric dimensions and 300 DPI as the stated specification, and treat the inch label as an error rather than as a second size. The source says the image can be enlarged or reduced by around 30% while retaining good quality; the exact result will depend on the output process and viewing distance.
The original post says the print was produced by AJ Wallpaper and describes warehouses in several countries with international shipping. Practical choices at a glance
| Decision | Option described by the tutorial | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Image surface | Self-adhesive wallpaper remnant | Thick, durable and repositionable; generally easier to smooth. |
| Image surface | Paper print | Usable, but less resilient and more prone to bubbles or waves during gluing. |
| Frame corner | Butt joint | Simpler square cuts; a more visibly utilitarian corner. |
| Frame corner | Mitre joint | More refined appearance; harder to cut and fit accurately. |
| Back panel | MDF | Smooth, affordable and readily cut; keep thickness and weight appropriate to the finished size. |
| Back panel | Plywood, masonite, chipboard, corflute or rigid card stock | All are named alternatives, but the source supplies no independent performance ranking or load data. |
| Hanging | Moulding ledge on two wall nails | Method used by the author; wall fasteners must suit your frame and wall. |
| Hanging | Picture string or other hardware | Alternative arrangements; exact hardware is not specified in the source. |
Troubleshooting during the build
The print is bubbling or wavy
Paper is the vulnerable material in this method. Lift and smooth small sections rather than pressing the whole sheet at once, and avoid flooding the surface with glue. If a paper print has already developed waves, allow it to settle before wrapping; forcing a wet sheet around the edge can lock the distortion into the finished frame. A thicker self-adhesive substrate is the more forgiving choice described by the tutorial.

There is not enough bleed to fold over
Do not trim the print flush with the panel. The backing is intentionally smaller so an allowance can wrap over every side. If the image has already been cut too close, the cleanest remedy is to resize or reprint it with the required margin rather than trying to stretch the edge.
The thin panel flexes while you nail
Support the board underneath before attaching rear bracing. Add a centre brace when the size or material leaves the middle flexible. The bracing is both a stiffener and the anchoring surface for the face moulding.

Front nails miss the brace
Mark the brace position on the front moulding before nailing. A nail driven outside that zone may have only thin backing behind it and will not provide the intended hold. Reposition the nail or add a suitable brace before the glue cures.
Mitred corners have visible gaps
Dry-fit every piece and label its orientation before gluing. Recheck the saw angle and the measured length; mitres magnify small errors. If accuracy is more important than the angled look, switch to butt joints, which the method also accepts.
The finished frame feels too heavy
The source emphasizes lightweight backing because large art can become overly heavy when the panel is too dense. Reconsider the sheet material and thickness, keep the bracing and moulding modest, and choose wall fasteners for the actual completed weight. No load rating is supplied for this construction, so do not assume a particular nail or hook is adequate without checking it for your wall.
When this method is a good fit
Use this build when you want a shallow profile, a wrapped image with no glazing and a frame that can be made from readily available trim. It is especially useful for oversized decorative prints and wallpaper remnants that are too large for a standard ready-made frame. Choose another construction if you need glass, archival conservation, a deep shadow-box cavity or a professionally certified load-bearing system; those requirements are outside what this tutorial tests or specifies.

For the owl image, keep the stated personal, non-commercial licence, use the metric 125 × 100 cm at 300 DPI specification, and size your backing about 5 cm smaller than the print. That combination preserves the method’s essential allowances while avoiding the source’s inconsistent imperial conversion.
