You can turn a pair of sound reclaimed shutters or a solid-core interior door into a finished headboard with ordinary woodworking tools. The shutter method is best when you want a lighter, assembled panel; the door method gives you a broad, single-piece backdrop. In either case, measure the bed and wall first, inspect the salvage, prepare the surface safely, and choose a support system for the finished weight—not for a generic product rating.
Choose the right reclaimed starting point
Shutters and doors produce different kinds of headboards. Shutters are narrow, repeatable panels, so you can arrange several across a plywood back or build a freestanding frame around them. A door is already a wide panel; trimming and adding simple molding can make it look like built-in furniture.

| Approach | Documented construction | Support arrangement | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backed shutter panel | Shutters cut to a layout, fastened to 3/8-inch plywood with 1 1/4-inch wood screws, then fitted with a cleat and a lower spacer | Wall-hung panel | A relatively light, unified shutter composition |
| Framed shutters | Shutter panels held by horizontal 1×4 rails, with 4×4 legs and a top shelf | Legs attached to the bed frame or another designed support | A deeper, furniture-like headboard |
| Old-door panel | Solid-core door trimmed and sanded, with crown molding, a top board, filled holes and paint | French cleat on the door and wall; floor-to-headboard supports are another documented design choice | A broad, architectural backdrop |
These are separate construction paths, not interchangeable measurements. The shutter examples are shown by Jaime Costiglio and Scavenger Chic. Door treatments appear in Hallmark Channel’s old-door project and Country Living’s repurposed-door example.
Measure before you cut or buy materials
Start with the mattress and the wall, not the salvage piece. Record the mattress width, the available wall width, the height you want visible above the pillows, the distance from the floor to the top of the mattress, and the location of wall studs. Then measure every shutter or door you are considering, including warped edges, missing louvers, hinge mortises and other areas you may need to trim.

Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
- Lay out shutter panels on the floor in the intended order and check the total width against the bed and adjacent furniture.
- For a door, mark the finished width and height with painter’s tape before cutting. Keep decorative panels centered where possible.
- Allow room for a frame, legs, shelf, molding or a plywood back; those parts change the final outside dimensions.
- Check that the headboard will not cover outlets, switches or a window casing.
The published projects show project-specific dimensions rather than a universal headboard size. Treat their arrangements as ideas, then cut to your own bed and room.
Inspect reclaimed wood and prepare a safe work area
Reject pieces with active rot, loose joints, severe twisting, insect damage or cracks that will pass through a screw or cleat. Tighten or repair loose shutter frames before adding a back. On a door, remove hinges, latch hardware and protruding screws; fill the resulting holes later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOld paint and varnish require special caution. The cited tutorials recommend ordinary eye protection and dust control, but they do not identify the coating on your salvaged piece. Before sanding, cutting or scraping, assess whether the finish could contain lead or another hazardous material and follow applicable local lead-safe guidance. A generic particulate mask alone does not make disturbing a hazardous coating safe. Work outdoors or use appropriate dust collection, keep children and pets away, and clean the area rather than blowing dust through the room.
Gather materials and tools
- Sound reclaimed shutters or a solid-core interior door
- 3/8-inch plywood for the backed shutter method, or 1×4 rails, 4×4 legs and a top shelf for the framed-shutter method
- 1 1/4-inch wood screws for fastening shutters to the plywood back
- A French cleat and structural screws or heavy-duty wall anchors selected for the finished load and wall construction
- Sandpaper, wood filler, caulk, primer and paint
- A saw suited to your material, drill/driver, bits, clamps, tape measure, level and stud finder
- Safety glasses and a dust-control setup appropriate to the coating and cutting operation
Use the hardware manufacturer’s instructions for screw length and anchor installation. The reclaimed projects demonstrate methods; they are not a tested load calculation for your wall.

Build a wall-hung headboard from shutters
1. Make and test the layout
Arrange the shutters face-up on a flat surface. Decide whether the louvers should run in the same direction or alternate. Mark the order on the backs, then measure the assembled width and height. If a panel must be shortened, support it fully and make the cut where the surrounding frame remains strong.
2. Prepare the shutters
Remove loose paint and dirt with the finish-safety precautions above. Sand only as aggressively as the existing coating allows. Repair gaps and dents with a compatible filler, let it cure, then sand smooth enough for your chosen finish. Prime patched areas and any bare wood so the topcoat does not flash.
3. Attach the plywood back
Cut 3/8-inch plywood to cover the assembled shutter arrangement. Place the shutters face-down on the plywood, square the layout, and clamp or temporarily brace the pieces. In Costiglio’s documented build, 1 1/4-inch wood screws fasten the shutters to the plywood. Position screws where they will pass through solid shutter framing, not through thin louvers, and predrill near edges to reduce splitting.
4. Add the cleat and lower spacer
Fasten the wall-hanging cleat to the plywood back according to its instructions. Add a lower spacer or matching strip so the headboard sits parallel to the wall instead of rocking on the cleat. Keep the spacer broad enough to distribute contact, and verify that the cleat and spacer are aligned before finishing.

5. Finish before hanging
Paint or seal the assembled panel on a stable surface. Use thin coats so paint does not glue moving louvers together. Let the finish cure fully, then test the assembly by lifting from the cleat area with a helper before taking it to the wall.
Build the framed shutter alternative
The Scavenger Chic design uses horizontal 1×4 rails to hold shutter panels, 4×4 legs, and a top shelf. This creates a deeper unit than a plywood-backed wall panel. Because the legs and rails carry the structure, square the frame as you fasten it and keep the shelf from becoming a lever that can rack the assembly.

Use that method only when your bed frame is designed to accept the connection and the fasteners can pass through sound structural material. If you instead choose a wall cleat, treat the complete framed unit as a new load: measure its finished weight and select the wall hardware accordingly. Do not combine the plywood-panel measurements with the framed design.
Turn an old door into a headboard
1. Choose and trim the door
A solid-core door provides a stable, broad panel. Remove hardware and mark the finished outline. Trim the door to fit the bed and room, keeping the decorative design balanced. Support both sides during the cut so the door does not pinch the blade or break at the edge.

2. Repair and sand
Fill hinge, latch and other holes, then sand the patched areas flush. Hallmark’s instructions include sandpaper, wood glue, caulk, paint, crown molding and a top board. Dry-fit the molding and top board before gluing so their corners meet cleanly and the door remains square.
3. Add trim and finish
Apply wood glue where the trim meets sound wood, reinforce it with suitable fasteners, and caulk small stationary gaps after the glue cures. Prime repaired and bare areas, then apply your paint or other finish in even coats. Country Living’s example uses a solid wood door with a decorative design, trimmed, hole-filled, sanded and painted, with floor-to-headboard supports as part of that particular installation.
4. Prepare the back for hanging
Mark the cleat location so it bears on the strongest part of the door. Keep the cleat level and provide a lower contact point if the panel can tilt away from the wall. A helper should support the door while you test the fit; a solid-core door can be substantially heavier than a shutter panel.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Mount the headboard to the wall safely
A French cleat consists of two beveled pieces that interlock: one fixed to the headboard and one fixed to the wall. The current This Old House guide recommends anchoring the wall-side cleat into studs. Locate and mark the studs, hold the cleat level, and use structural screws long enough to engage the stud without damaging wiring or plumbing.

- Weigh the completed headboard, including trim, shelf, legs and hardware.
- Inspect the wall construction and mark every stud that falls within the cleat’s length.
- Cut or select a cleat long enough to distribute the load, then predrill and fasten it level into the studs.
- Lift the headboard onto the wall cleat with two people, confirm that the bevels are fully engaged, and check that the lower spacer contacts the wall.
- Push and pull gently at the top corners. If the unit shifts, remove it and correct the cleat, spacer or fasteners before placing the bed against it.
If a stud is not available where the cleat must go, use heavy-duty wall anchors specifically rated for the finished headboard weight and the wall type. Do not assume a hollow-wall anchor has the same capacity as a stud connection. The wall-side hardware, not the reclaimed wood alone, determines whether the installation is secure.
Costiglio wrote that her cleat “claims to be able to hold 200# but the headboard only weighs about 40#.” Those figures describe her particular hardware and finished shutter headboard; they are not a universal cleat rating, a typical headboard weight or an engineering calculation for your project.

- Use a consistent sheen across shutters, backer and trim so mismatched old finishes do not compete.
- Paint louvers with a small brush, then wipe runs from the frame before they cure.
- For a two-tone design, mask the frame after the first color has cured rather than relying on one heavy coat.
- Keep the back accessible until the cleat is installed and tested.
- Round or ease sharp exposed corners, especially on a headboard used by children.
Troubleshoot common problems
The assembled shutters are uneven
Shim the layout on the floor, check for a twisted panel, and fasten only after the outside edges are square. A rigid plywood back can hold the arrangement, but it cannot correct a shutter that is structurally broken.
The door rocks on the wall
Check that the French-cleat bevels are fully engaged and that the lower spacer reaches the wall. If the wall is out of plane, adjust the spacer rather than tightening the cleat until the panel bows.
Paint keeps sticking to moving louvers
Remove excess paint from hinge lines, open the louvers while coats dry, and allow the finish to cure before closing them. Heavy coats hide details and can lock the mechanism.
The wall cannot accept the planned fasteners
Stop before hanging. Re-evaluate the cleat length, stud locations, wall-anchor rating and finished load. A bed-frame-supported design may be appropriate only if the frame itself can safely carry the added structure.
