To make a hand-painted full-length mirror, either build a wood frame around an unframed mirror or fit a paintable frame over the mirror you already own. Prepare the surface, paint a fully cured base coat, add the pattern with tape, stencils, brushes or a paint pen, and retain the glass with both an adhesive approved for its substrates and permanent mechanical fasteners.
Choose the right framing route first
Your starting mirror determines the tools, risk and amount of woodworking. A custom build gives you control over width and silhouette; an overlay frame is faster when the mirror is already installed and its dimensions are suitable.

| Route | What you do | Advantages | Checks before starting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build a custom frame | Cut lumber and plywood, assemble the frame, finish it, then secure the mirror. | Custom outside dimensions, depth and decorative top; suitable for an unframed plate-glass mirror. | Confirm your cutting accuracy, the mirror’s thickness and a safe retention method. The documented example used four lengths of 1×6 lumber and a 3/4-inch plywood curved top, but those dimensions are project-specific, not universal requirements. |
| Fit a paintable frame over an existing mirror | Measure the installed mirror and attach a made-to-fit paintable surround. | Less cutting and finishing; the mirror can remain on the wall. | The Weston Paintable Add A Frame is listed at 2 inches wide and 0.75 inches deep, and its product page says installation needs no saws, power tools or mirror removal. Verify your mirror’s measurements, edge clearance and the current installation instructions before buying. |
The custom-frame sequence is documented in Addicted 2 Decorating’s 2017 project. The overlay option is described on the Weston product page. Neither source establishes fit for every full-length mirror, so measure your actual glass rather than assuming a standard size.
Plan the design and take measurements
Measure the glass and the finished outside size
Record the mirror’s height, width and thickness, plus the amount of wall or floor clearance around it. Decide whether the frame will sit flush with the glass edge or overlap it. In the documented build, the wood overlapped the mirror by approximately 1.5 inches on each side. Treat that as a reference layout only: a different overlap changes the visible mirror area and the frame’s outside dimensions.

Draw the decorative silhouette before cutting
Keep the main rails straight if you want the painted pattern to read clearly, and reserve curves or scrolls for a top piece. The example used a separate 3/4-inch plywood top with a curved profile. Transfer the curve to a full-size paper or cardboard template, check that it is symmetrical, then trace it onto plywood. A template is easier to correct than a cut board.

Choose a motif that suits hand painting
The project’s floral bone-inlay inspiration was deliberately interpreted as a hand-painted design rather than a precise imitation. Plan a repeatable scale, leave enough unpainted space for the base color to show, and accept slight variation as part of the finish. Make a small painted sample on scrap wood before committing to the frame.
Gather materials and safety equipment
- For a custom frame: four boards, plywood for any shaped top, wood glue, screws, braces or mending plates, wood filler and 220-grit sandpaper.
- For finishing: suitable primer, base-color paint, accent colors, painter’s tape, small craft brushes, an optional stencil and a refillable acrylic paint pen.
- For mirror retention: an adhesive specifically approved for mirrors and your substrates, mirror clips or another permanent mechanical retention system, and fasteners appropriate to the frame.
- For hanging: a cleat or other rated hardware selected for the completed mirror’s weight and your wall construction.
- For protection: eye protection during cutting and sanding, gloves for handling glass, drop cloths, ventilation and a second person to help move a full-length mirror.
Paint quantities, coverage and drying times are not universal. Use the labels for the exact primer and paints you select, and do not load the frame or attach the mirror until each material has reached the cure or set condition specified by its manufacturer.

Build a custom wood frame around an unframed mirror
- Cut and dry-fit the rails. Cut the four boards to your measured outside dimensions, allowing for your chosen overlap and joint style. Lay them around the mirror without adhesive to verify that the opening is square and the glass is not forced against a corner.
- Shape and test the top detail. Cut the curved or decorative top from plywood, then place it on the dry-fitted frame. Refine the profile before assembly; once painted, correcting a poor fit is much harder.
- Assemble with reinforcement. Apply wood glue at the joints, clamp or hold the pieces aligned, and drive screws. The documented project also used braces and mending plates. Predrill near board ends to reduce splitting, and keep every fastener clear of the mirror opening.
- Fill transitions. After the glue has set, fill screw holes, seams and changes in level with wood filler. Let the filler dry according to its label, then sand with 220-grit paper until the joints feel flush when you run a fingertip across them.
- Check the opening again. Set the frame beside or over the mirror and confirm the planned overlap on every side. Do not use the glass as a clamp or structural brace; it should fit without pressure points.
The lumber sizes, plywood thickness and overlap above mirror the choices reported in the 2017 project, not a rule for every frame. Adapt the stock to your mirror, design and available joinery, while preserving a stable perimeter and room for approved retention hardware.
Prepare the surface before any decoration
New wood
Remove sanding dust, then prime all unprimed areas. Filler can absorb paint differently from surrounding wood, so a continuous primer coat helps even out the sheen and color. The documented project filled and sanded joints, primed unprimed surfaces, then applied its base color.
An existing painted or laminated frame
Bunnings’ mirror-makeover guidance recommends cleaning thoroughly, lightly sanding glossy or previously painted areas, removing sanding dust and using a suitable primer on very smooth, laminated or dark surfaces. Do not skip cleaning: wax, polish and skin oils can cause fisheyes or poor adhesion.

Protect the glass
Mask the mirror face with painter’s tape and a tightly fitted covering before sanding or spraying. Keep abrasive dust out of the frame-to-glass joint. If you are painting a removable glass insert rather than a wood frame, Rust-Oleum’s framed-mirror guidance describes light spray coats in a well-ventilated area and mirror-effect paint applied to the reverse side of glass; that is a different technique and is not required for this project.
Paint the base, then add the hand-painted pattern
- Apply the base color. Brush or roll the primed frame evenly. The documented project used two coats of green base paint and allowed them to dry completely before decoration. Follow your paint label for recoat and cure times rather than copying a fixed waiting period.
- Map the layout. Use a ruler, light pencil marks or a paper template to position repeats. Keep guide marks faint so they disappear under the decorative paint.
- Make straight bands with tape. Press painter’s tape firmly along the edges of stripes or borders. Seal the tape edge with the base color if necessary, then apply the accent color in light coats and remove the tape while the paint is still workable.
- Repeat motifs with a stencil. An optional stencil can produce repeated diamonds or dots. Use a nearly dry brush or a small amount of paint to prevent seepage under the stencil, and test the pressure and spacing on scrap first.
- Paint freehand flowers and details. Small craft brushes allow petals, leaves and irregular accents. Work from larger shapes to smaller marks, letting each layer become stable enough that the brush does not drag the color beneath it.
- Outline selectively. A refillable acrylic paint pen can create a narrow border or crisp accent. In the documented project, the paint was diluted slightly for that pen; only thin the paint if the pen manufacturer’s instructions and a test stroke support it.
Varying brush pressure and spacing keeps the result convincingly handmade. Aim for a balanced composition rather than machine-perfect symmetry; the project’s stated goal was a hand-painted interpretation of floral bone inlay, not an exact reproduction.
Secure the mirror without relying on adhesive alone
The frame can look finished and still be unsafe if the glass is retained incorrectly. The project account used mirror mastic and mirror clips, but adhesive instructions control whether that combination is suitable for your materials.

- Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
- The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
- The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
- These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
- Check the substrate. Palmer’s Mirro-Mastic instructions say not to use that product on a painted surface or treated wood. Where mastic contacts porous wood or drywall, the instructions call for a quality primer, not paint, and clean, dry surfaces.
- Use mechanical retention. The same instructions require permanent mechanical fasteners for all mirror applications. Adhesive alone is therefore not sufficient mirror retention. Choose clips, brackets or another system that fits the glass thickness and frame geometry.
- Respect application conditions. The Mirro-Mastic instructions specify an application range of 59°F to 95°F (15°C to 35°C). Keep the glass supported while the adhesive sets for the period stated on its instructions.
- Keep pressure off the glass. Set clips or stops so they retain the mirror without point-loading an edge. If the mirror rocks, rattles or binds, stop and correct the fit before hanging.
There is no universal weight limit or wall-anchor specification for every full-length mirror. Select wall fasteners for the actual completed weight and the construction behind your wall, and follow the hardware maker’s directions. The project lists a hanging cleat, but that does not make one cleat or anchor correct for every installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use an overlay frame when you do not want to remove the mirror
- Measure the visible mirror width and height at several points; note out-of-square corners and any nearby trim, clips or outlets.
- Confirm that the proposed frame’s inside opening leaves the glass visible and does not collide with wall hardware. The Weston frame listing gives a 2-inch face width and 0.75-inch depth, so compare those dimensions with your clearance.
- Clean and lightly abrade the existing frame or bonding area as appropriate, then prime smooth or dark surfaces according to the preparation guidance above.
- Paint the frame off the wall when possible. Complete the base coat and decorative pattern, and allow the finish to cure before installation.
- Follow the current frame manufacturer’s attachment instructions. Do not assume that a no-tools installation eliminates the need to verify support, alignment or the mirror’s weight.
This route reduces woodworking but limits you to the product’s available profile and measured fit. A custom frame remains the better choice when you need a special curve, unusual width or a frame that carries substantial structural hardware.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Paint beads or fisheyes | Wax, polish, oil or silicone remained on the frame. | Remove the coating with a cleaner compatible with the substrate, rinse or wipe as directed, let the surface dry, then sand and re-prime. |
| Filler seams show through | The joint was not flush, or filler absorbed the base coat differently. | Sand until level, remove dust and apply primer over the entire prepared area before repainting. |
| Tape pulls up the base coat | The base coat was under-cured or the tape adhesive was too aggressive. | Wait for the label’s cure guidance, use low-tack painter’s tape, burnish only the edge and remove it carefully. |
| Stencil edges look blurry | Too much paint or a loose stencil allowed seepage. | Use less paint, hold the stencil flat and test the technique on scrap before touching the finished frame. |
| Mirror shifts or rattles | Retention points are missing, loose or incompatible with the glass. | Stop using the mirror; verify the adhesive substrate rules and add permanent mechanical fasteners sized for the mirror and frame. |
| Frame pulls away from the wall | Anchor or cleat capacity does not match the finished weight or wall structure. | Recalculate the load, locate structural support where possible and replace the hardware with a system rated for that wall and weight. |
Finish, cure and maintain the mirror
Inspect the frame in raking light before removing the masking. Touch up pinholes, pencil guides or thin edges only after the underlying paint is stable. Keep the mirror dry and avoid placing cleaning liquid against the frame’s lower edge, where it can wick into wood or an unsealed joint. Clean the glass with a cloth dampened with the appropriate glass cleaner rather than saturating the painted surround.
