A hallway cabinet can turn wasted wall width into useful storage without making the passage feel like a tunnel. The practical approach shown in Making Manzanita’s project is a custom base cabinet that looks built-in, with adjustable shelves and a wood countertop; the cabinet is painted, while the oak top is stained and sealed. That distinction matters when you choose materials and plan the finishing order.

Measure the opening, check the walls for square, decide whether you want paint or visible wood grain, and then build the cabinet in a sequence that keeps the box square and the finish clean. The instructions below adapt the project’s method while identifying which times, costs and coating techniques belong only to the original example.

Start with the hallway, not the cabinet

Making Manzanita’s author described a hallway section that was “way wider than it needed to be” and was not being used. A floor-to-ceiling cabinet was rejected because it could make the narrow passage feel enclosed. The chosen solution was a base cabinet designed to look built-in, with shelving planned above it later. That proportion is a useful starting point: use the lower unit for closed storage and leave the upper wall open until you know how much visual weight the hall can tolerate.

Measure the usable opening

  • Measure width at the floor, at countertop height and higher up. Walls, trim and corners can vary.
  • Measure depth from the finished wall to the point where doors and people can pass comfortably. Account for baseboard, casing and door swing.
  • Measure ceiling height and note whether future shelves would interfere with switches, vents, artwork or door trim.
  • Check both side walls and the floor with a level and a straightedge. A corner that is out of square changes the cabinet width, scribe strips and countertop dimensions.

Do not copy another builder’s cut list. The source project’s plywood, MDF and trim quantities were sized for one hallway; your dimensions, local sheet sizes and hardware overlay will be different.

Choose the finish before buying sheet goods

Paint gives you more freedom to use plywood offcuts and MDF for details. The project author specifically notes that MDF is appropriate for painted work but is not a good choice when you want a stained, natural-wood appearance. Stain generally rewards better-looking solid wood or veneer and adds preparation and finishing time. A mixed finish—painted cabinet with a stained oak top—uses each material where it makes sense.

Decision Painted cabinet Stained wood surface
Best substrate Plywood, MDF panels and other stable sheet goods with properly filled and primed edges Oak or another attractive solid wood or veneer whose grain you want to show
Visual result Uniform color; hides mismatched plywood faces and MDF details Visible grain and variation; surface quality remains part of the design
Preparation Clean, sand, prime, apply paint coats and seal if the product system calls for it Sand evenly, condition or test the wood if required by the stain, then seal with compatible clear coats
Application options The example used a roller; spraying is another possible method with more masking and equipment Brush, rag or spray methods depend on the stain and clear finish instructions
Evidence limits The sources do not provide a controlled comparison of labor, durability or cost. Choose based on substrate, grain, tools, time and the coating system you can follow.

Materials and tools for a custom build

The Making Manzanita supply list is a project-specific starting point, not a universal shopping list. It includes:

  • Plywood for the cabinet parts and 1/4-inch underlayment plywood for the back.
  • 1/2-inch and 1/4-inch MDF for door and top details where the surfaces will be painted.
  • Screws, brad nails, wood glue, construction adhesive and wood filler.
  • A shelf-pin drilling jig and matching drill bit for adjustable shelves.
  • Clamps, an impact driver and a brad nailer.
  • Oak-veneer plywood, MDF and oak edging for the countertop assembly.
  • Paint, a roller, primer and sealer appropriate for the substrates.
  • Hinges and pulls or knobs selected for the door overlay and thickness.

Buy the shelf-pin jig, primer, roller, polyurethane or other sealer and hinges only after confirming the hole diameter, coverage, sheen and overlay required by your design. Sheet goods and trim depend on your final dimensions and what is available locally.

Build the cabinet in an order that protects the finish

  1. Finalize the design. Decide the cabinet width, depth, height, number of doors and shelf locations. Draw the face, side panels, shelves, back, toe kick and countertop overhang. Leave any upper shelving as a separate future project if a full-height unit would crowd the hall.
  2. Verify the opening. Recheck wall plumb, floor level, corner square and obstructions. Record the smallest width and the highest floor point; those measurements control the cabinet envelope.
  3. Cut and lightly sand. Cut plywood and MDF parts to your drawing, label each piece and ease sharp edges. Light sanding removes splinters without rounding joints that need to meet square.
  4. Drill shelf-pin holes before assembly. Use a shelf-drilling jig so the rows are parallel and consistent. Drilling after the box is assembled is harder and can leave the bit wandering or the interior scarred.
  5. Assemble on a level surface. Join the sides, top, bottom and fixed parts with glue and screws or brads as designed. Clamp and measure diagonals until they match; a level work surface helps the box stay square while the adhesive cures.
  6. Add the front structure and doors. Attach the face frame or front strips, build the doors and fill visible fastener holes. Test-fit the doors before painting so you can correct gaps without damaging a finished surface.
  7. Install the toe kick and countertop base. Build the recessed toe kick to suit the floor and attach the countertop support. The source project used oak-veneer plywood over MDF, with oak edging added later.
  8. Prepare the paint system. Remove doors, drawers and hardware when that makes cleaning and coating easier. Clean every surface, sand glossy areas, remove dust and prime exposed or porous material.
  9. Paint and seal the cabinet. Roll the interior first, then the exterior and front. Allow the paint to dry according to its label, apply the number of coats needed for uniform coverage, and add a compatible sealer in thin coats when the coating system calls for one.
  10. Finish the countertop separately. Attach the oak edging after the cabinet paint is complete, then stain and seal the top. Keep stain and clear coat off the painted cabinet.
  11. Secure the cabinet to the wall. Anchor it to suitable framing or other approved structure, shim where necessary and confirm that it is level and plumb before final tightening.
  12. Install hinges and hardware. Select hinges with the correct overlay for your doors and follow the hardware maker’s drilling pattern. Fit pulls or knobs only after the doors hang evenly.

Painting preparation that prevents peeling and rough edges

Clean, degloss and sand

The Home Depot furniture-painting guide, last updated August 11, 2026, advises removing components where useful, preparing and cleaning the surface, priming, painting and sealing. Follow the product label for your actual plywood, MDF, existing finish and sealer; the guide’s timing is not universal. Remove grease, dust and adhesive residue before sanding. An optional liquid deglosser can help on sound, glossy finishes, while an orbital sander is useful only where its size and dust control are appropriate.

KILZ’s cabinet-refinishing sheet recommends two sanding passes, removing dust before primer and using primer before paint. Dark colors and high humidity can extend drying time. Use a vacuum and tack cloth after sanding, and do not trap dust under the first coat.

Prime every difficult area

Prime MDF edges, filled nail holes, bare plywood and any old finish that could bleed or reject water-based paint. Let the primer dry as directed and sand only as much as the label permits. A shellac-based primer appears in an indexed hallway-cabinet makeover by A Ray of Sunlight, along with Krud Kutter, 220- and 400-grit paper and water-based polyurethane; that page was not accessible for a full procedure, so treat those items as examples rather than a tested recipe.

Apply paint in controllable coats

The example cabinet was rolled. A mini roller can leave a smoother field than a large nap roller, while a brush reaches corners and profiles. Spraying may produce an even result, but it requires masking, ventilation, thinning or viscosity checks and practice; the reviewed sources do not establish that spraying is always better. Whichever method you choose, keep coats thin, maintain a wet edge and inspect the surface in raking light before the next coat.

The Home Depot guide recommends two paint coats for coverage and at least overnight drying for paint, but your product label controls the recoat interval. High humidity, cool temperatures and dark colors can lengthen that interval. Do not install doors or stack shelves until the finish has reached the cure time specified by the manufacturer.

Build and stain the oak countertop

The countertop is the part that is not painted in this design. The source assembly used oak-veneer plywood over MDF with oak edging. Painting the cabinet first keeps the body color clean; attaching the edging afterward hides the plywood edge and creates a continuous wood detail.

  • Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
  • The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
  • The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
  • These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
  1. Dry-fit the countertop on the cabinet and mark the overhangs, wall irregularities and edging joints.
  2. Assemble the oak-veneer plywood and MDF support so the top remains flat. Clamp the oak edging in place and use glue and appropriate fasteners.
  3. Trim and sand the edging flush. Test stain on an offcut or hidden area because veneer and solid edging can absorb color differently.
  4. Apply stain according to its label, wipe off excess and allow the stated drying time.
  5. Protect the top with compatible clear coats. The project author rubbed between polyurethane coats with steel wool; that is the author’s method, not a universal requirement. Use the abrasive and recoat schedule approved for your product.

Install the cabinet without losing the built-in look

Set the painted box in its opening and check level, plumb and door clearances again. Shim low spots rather than forcing the cabinet out of square. Fasten through sturdy cabinet members into wall framing or use anchors rated for the load and wall type. Construction adhesive can help position trim, but it does not replace a structural attachment.

Once the cabinet is secure, fit the doors and adjust the hinges. Overlay measurements vary, so use the hinge instructions for the exact model. Install shelves only after the paint has cured enough to resist pin marks, and leave the shelf pins accessible so heights can be changed later.

Time, cost and difficulty for the reference project

Project-card figure What it means
Estimated cost: $300 Making Manzanita’s estimate for its own cabinet, originally published December 20, 2018 and updated March 19, 2024. It is historical and project-specific, not a current price for every hallway.
Active time: 4 days The author’s stated active time for the example.
Total time: 4 days The author’s stated total time for the example; drying, curing, layout changes or extra shelves can make another build longer.
Difficulty: Intermediate The source project’s rating. Accurate cutting, square assembly, hinge installation and finishing make this more involved than a simple shelf.

Troubleshooting before you call the project finished

The cabinet is out of square

Measure the diagonals. If they differ, loosen clamps or fasteners, push the longer diagonal inward and recheck on a level surface. Do this before the back, face frame or countertop locks the error in place.

Doors do not align

Confirm that the cabinet is level and the hinge overlay matches the door and side-panel thickness. Adjust one hinge at a time; forcing a mis-sized hinge or drilling from an incorrect template can permanently enlarge the hole.

Paint feels rough or shows roller marks

Stop adding coats until the surface is dry, remove nibs with the grit permitted by the coating system, clean the dust and use a lighter, more even pass. Roughness often comes from inadequate cleaning, sanding dust or overworking paint as it begins to set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Edges absorb paint unevenly

MDF and exposed plywood edges are porous. Refill defects, prime those edges and sand lightly between compatible coats. Do not rely on extra color coats to level a damaged edge.

Stain looks blotchy

Veneer, solid edging and MDF-backed areas do not absorb identically. Test the complete stain-and-sealer schedule on scrap from the same materials before recoating the installed top.

Final quality and safety checklist

  • All dimensions were checked against the actual hallway, including baseboard and door swing.
  • Shelf-pin holes were drilled before assembly and are aligned from side to side.
  • The box is level, plumb and square before the back, face and countertop are fixed.
  • Dust, grease and sanding residue were removed before primer and paint.
  • Primer, paint, stain and sealer are compatible with each substrate and were allowed to dry for their labeled times.
  • Ventilation, eye protection, gloves and respiratory protection match the products and sanding method.
  • The cabinet is anchored to the wall before heavy contents are loaded.
  • Doors clear the floor, adjacent trim and one another, and hardware is tightened without crushing MDF.

This sequence produces the reference project’s intended effect: a painted base cabinet that reads as built-in storage, with adjustable shelving potential above and a contrasting stained oak countertop. The dimensions, hardware, coating products and schedule must be tailored to your hallway and the labels for the materials you actually buy.
